SUPERSPAR MILLS opens in Hayfields T
HE Rolyats group’s second Pietermaritzburg store, SUPERSPAR Mills in Mills Circle Hayfields, is now open. This is the message from Nick Christodolou, Greg Christodolou and Lloyd Mentory. Christodolou and Mentorysaythegroupisontrackwith their roll-out of stores in PMB, with their Market SPAR outlet in Foxon Road having just celebrated its first birthday. “The fantastic support from the residents of Hayfields and surrounding areas has seen the Foxon Road Market SPAR sales increase substantiallysincethetake-overfrom the previous retail store,” said Mentory. Customers regularly share their enthusiasm and satisfaction about the Foxon Road store with Christodolou and Mentory and both thank residents of Hayfields and surrounding areas for their support. The new Mills store is a SUPERSPAR, the largest in PMB, and is one of the largest SUPERSPAR’s in South Africa. The planned opening date for early April was specifically chosen in order to bring a wide range of options, choice and value to residents during a time when most stores are back to their normal mode after Christmas. This will make it a period of many opportunities for the residents of Hayfields and surrounding communities who shop at the new SUPERSPAR Mills. This is evident because the two stores will have already generated more than 300 full-time jobs in the area, thefirsttimenewjobshavebeen createdonthisscaleintheareaforthe past decade. Thefactthatthestaffareemployed full-time in the business, and not as temporary staff as they are elsewhere in the industry, leads to improved service levels for valued customers.

Congratulating the store, city Mayor Chris Ndlela said: “We applaud the initiative as it will also encourage healthy competition between businesses. We are excited that our people are getting employment, thus reducing poverty. This is a huge investment. “We have to shed the smalltown mentality. Hopeful city residents will take full advantage of this opportunity.” lay-bye, an island to stop u-turns, an additional set of traffic lights, improved waste water and sewage flows, and an underground rainwater attenuation pond to minimise the impact of stormwater during heavy rains. Nick Christodolou said the Rolyats Group will be bringing a broader than normal range of products to even more residents in the city when they open the next three stores on the new sites that have already been identified in Pietermaritzburg. “It is time that our unique brand and fresh approach to supermarket retailing benefited the wider Pietermaritzburg community, and so we are glad to have a growth path laid out for the city.” Mentory said that this has only been possible due to the efforts oftheKZNPremierand Pietermaritzburg’s mayor, municipal manager, LED manager, and the various
department heads from water, electricity, town planning, roads, engineering and many more. “We thank these officials for their efforts, which have made it possible for us to establish a strong base in Pietermaritzburg. “We would also like to thank Melanie Veness and Bill Lambert from the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business for their assistance,” said Mentory. He also thanked Sibusiso Sithole, who was acting municipal manager at the time, for having the vision to support the approval of the development at Mills Circle Hayfields. “Finally we would like to thank Dr Rob Smorfitt who helped to secure the site and who has been involved since inception in this development and who will be involved in our future plans and developments,” he said.
