UToftheashesofMayor’sWalk Spar, following a fire earlier this year, rises the newly improved and restocked store, aimed at accommodating residents in the surrounding areas. The Spar was established in the early 1990’s. On7Octoberthisyear,afireripped through the store, causing major damage, which resulted in the stock in the store being condemned. “This meant that we had to start from scratch. We had to remove everything from the store and restock it. “Although this was not an ideal

situation, it gave us the chance to make some necessary improvements and do a full spring clean,” said Frank Knowles, assistant store manager. The store was closed for about three weeks and during that time, members from the Spar franchise assisted to ensure that the store was redesigned and improved to the national Spar spec. Knowles said that all staff were retainedandcompensatedduringthe shutdown period. Doors were reopened on 22 October. He added that they had received a positive response from customers about the new store, and said that the management and staff remain

positive and confident about the success of the store going into the festive season. “We would like to say thank you to the public for being patient with us during the shutdown period. We’re glad to see the old faces back in store and look forward to welcoming new ones,” said Knowles. He, together with store manager Mohammed Hassen, said that they welcome and encourage feedback from customers about the store. “We look forward to a good Christmas and New Year.” Mayor’s Walk Spar is open seven days a week from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and from 7:30am to 6pm on Sundays.

ONESTY is the best policy is howtodescribeAyandaMamjuqu (18), who found an iPad in the city centre and has been adamantly searching for the owner. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Mamjuqu said that he was window shopping in town on 20 November, after finishing his exams, and found an iPad in the vicinity of the Cathedral of the Holy Nativity. Hesaidthathewastemptedtotake it in and sell it, however he thought about his mother’s words that one should never take joy from other’s tears. He then went home and told his parents about the iPad that he found and his mother, Busiswe Ngubane, contactedShanaazBuxatCrimeAlert Pietermaritzburg. After hearing about the honesty of the Grade 11 Heather Secondary pupil, Bux decided that he should be rewarded. It was then that she asked her ‘crime-maniacs’ if they would be interested in making a donation towards a Christmas gift for Mamjuqu. Bux managed to collect enough money from members of the public to buy Mamjuqu the gift that was at the top of his Christmas list - a Blackberry cellphone. Security company MI7 also made amonetarydonationtoMamjuquand his family. When asked how they felt about their son’s honesty Njuqu’s parents were overwhelmed with pride. “That is the way we raised our children to behave; that they must

Ayanda Mamjuqu (R) with his mother Busiswe Ngubane. fear God before anyone else. They havegrownupbelievingthatbydoing something small, it will take you higher in life,” said Shadrack, Mamjuqu’s father. He added that they never expected for their son to get this amount of recognition. “We just hugged him and told him that we were proud that he did the right thing. We are surprised at the rewards that have come from his actions.” The handover of the gifts took place at the Pietermaritzburg SAPS Cluster Offices, where acting station Commander Brigadier Francis Bantham rewarded Njuqu with his cellphone and money. “I am proud of the way that my parents raised me. They taught me the right values and I am happy that

I made them proud,” said Mamjuqu. Bantham said that she was overjoyed at the initiative and honestly shown by Mamjuqu. “This is a clear example of how the community can help the police in the fight against crime in the city, and something that all the youth should look to and follow. We wish Ayanda everything of the best.” She added that the community are the ones that help the police become better at their jobs. “The community make it possible to fight against crime in the city. The community needs to take charge of their own streets. We will continue our operations within the cluster over the festive period, but we cannot emphasize the importance of community involvement enough,” she said.

ORE than 300 waste pickers took to the streets recently, marching to the City Hall demanding that the Msunduzi Municipality give them answers regarding the R21 million funding of the materials recycling facility (MRF) at the New England Road Landfill site. Spokesperson for the South African Waste Pickers’ Association (SAWPA), Simon Mbatha, said that they have waited three years for the construction of the MRF but nothing has been concluded. Mbatha said that the service delivery march was targeted at the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) for neglecting its oversight role of the local and district municipalities in

Pietermaritzburg. “Themarchwastosupportthelocalwastepickers in Pietermaritzburg. The municipality has beenplayinghideandseekwiththedistrictmunicipality in terms of building this. We have tried to engagewiththembutwehavenotreceivedanyanswers. “For three years, this municipality has not taken the decision to build the MRF. Currently in

South Africa, we are experiencing a high rate of unemployment. The current government speaks of job creation, however if the municipality cannot see this as a way of creating job opportunities for its local people, I don’t know what else will. We need answers,” said Mbatha. Mbatha further stated that the MRF will enable the waste pickers to work under better conditions. “The MRF will move the waste pickers away from these bad conditions they work under. The project will also help the Msunduzi Municipality because they have problems with waste management. “Recently in October, a waste picker was overrun by a tractor at the landfill site. The other waste picker is in hospital and is paralysed due to an accident which took place at the landfill site. Waste pickers want to work under better conditions,” explained Mbatha. He said that there are 700 waste pickers at the New England Road landfill site.

Illegal connections kill again in Manor KHANYISANI DLOMO MANOR area has proven to be Pietermaritzburg’s “field of death”. A man was electrocuted by illegal connections and died at the weekend - just two weeks after another man died the same way on Echo Road, while his friend was injured by exposed wires there. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the man, believedtohavebeentakingashortcut, was walking in the bushes there when he stumbled on electric wires and was electrocuted on Saturday. “He suffered severe head burn injures and was declared dead on the scene. “Paramedics had to wait for Eskom to switch offthemainelectricitypowersotheycouldattend to the patient,” Meiring said. Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed the incident and said an inquest docket had been opened. The illegal connections run from Echo Road substation to the Jika Joe informal settlement. Residents have been raising concern over the issue of illegal connections in the area that continue to claim lives. Councillor Naleni Atwaru said she was aware of the incident and said she has been reporting a wide range of electricity problems to the electricity department, municipal manager and mayor for a long time. “Theyarewellawareoftheillegalconnections in the area and the problem still persists. The death is regretted, and could have been avoided had the appropriate action been taken,” Atwaru said. “I implore the residents to [come] forward by providing affidavits and/or petitions to identify who the culprits are that are doing these illegal connectionsandhelpblowthewhistleonthisillegalactivityintheinterestsofsavingfurtherlives.” Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said: “The municipality will investigate the matter. concerned Chase Valley Road resident is hoping that the Msunduzi Municipality will act fast and construct traffic calming measures along Chase Valley Road to avoid any loss of life. On numerous occasions, speeding cars have smashed through Di Martin’s fence wall. The most recent incident happened about two weeks ago. “If nothing is done to stop speeding down Chase Valley Road, death will occur in a car, on the side walk or in my garden,” she said. Martin said that she is glad that when the last incidenttookplace, noneofherfamilymembers were in her garden. Otherwise, it could have been catastrophic. “Cars are going too fast turning from Townbush Road into Chase Valley Road. They lose control on the corner and end up in my garden. It is a miracle that no-one has been hurt,” said Martin. She said that she has signatures of residents who also feel that speed humps should be constructed. She also questioned the visibility of traffic officials in the area. “The municipality seems reluctant to put traffic calming measures in the lower end of Chase Valley Road. Why? We have the support of residents. There is a noticeable lack of regard for the rules of the road throughout the province. What happened to the “Zero Tolerance KZN’ campaign? Where are the traffic police?” she asked. She said that the neighbouring War Memorial Homes offices have 43 residents who

I have a beautiful Victorian home which is part of the authentic look of Pietermaritzburg that should be cherished as part of our architectural history. It was part of the open garden program in April as I have planted an indigenous garden and I am an active conservationist. “I really get angry when I think that it is too dangerous for us to be in our own garden in case some inconsiderate idiot going too fast ends up crashing through our garden wall,” she said. At the time of going to print, the Msunduzi Municipality had not responded on the matter.

Court interdict to stop illegal invasions NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

THE Executive Committee (Exco) has agreed to get a blanket interdict from court which will prevent potential, but unidentified persons, from invading Msunduzi municipal land. Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said that brief research conducted indicates that a similar interdict has been granted to eThekwini, aswellastheCityofJohannesburg. “This is a cancer and it may get worse moving closer to the 2016 local government elections, withpeopletakingadvantageofthe environment to profile themselves as alternative leaders to the current representatives,” said mayor Chris Ndlela. Exco member Bill Lambert said that preventative measures must incorporate action from the municipal security department. “The blanket interdict will allow us to demolish the illegal structures as soon as they crop up, and will allow us not to waste time and resources. There are pockets of land being invaded because people are banking on the fact that the processes of the law are slow enough to give them other benefits,” added Ndlela.

The Netcare St Anne’s trauma injury prevention task team visited St Christophers School recently. The team educated the pupils and staff about hand, oral and basic hygiene. Students were given oral hygiene kits and were also shown about the correct brushing of teeth techniques. In general, basic hygiene refers to bathing regularly to cleanse the skin and the hair, keeping the nails clipped and clean, brushing the teeth, and wearing deodorant. For most people, these type of hygiene practices are simply a habit that they have learned since they were little, others may need to work harder at it for a number of reasons. United’s marketing and communications manager Brian Zuma said gratitude was written on the faces of residents who burst into song in appreciation. “We are very excited to be part of this noble initiative. CHALK and Babsie Pretorius will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this Friday, 19 December. “Having reached this milestone is a gift from above and it takes two people to make it work,” said Schalk. The couple met in Howick where they both worked, and they had their first child, three years after they got

married. The couple has three children. “For our honeymoon we spent time together in Cape Town,” said Babsie. Schalk added, “For marriage to last this long is rare these days. Young people no longer go through troubled times together.” He urged couples, young and old, to put God at the centre of their relationships and adopt religion as an important aspect of their relationship.

State of Truro hall I RECENTLY attended a function at the Truro hall and was truly appalled by the lack of maintenance. People pay thousands of rands just for a few hours, but value for money is not given. The floors were filthy and there were some brokentileswhichInearlytrippedover.Someofthewindow blinds were falling off and some were missing. Discolouration of the paint on the walls was visible. The toilets had an offensive odour and urine was on the floor. There was no hand wash, no hand towels and even the toilet rolls weren’t enough to last for the duration of the occasion. World title for South Africa. People in this country can now smile and boast that the most beautiful girl in the world comes from South Africa. With almost one billion viewers watching the pageant, Roelene Strauss has put our country on the pedestal once again. This can be a distraction from all the negative publicity South Africa has been receiving globally. Roelene Strauss has brought honour to South Africa. May she continue to shine bright like a diamond VIJAY SURUJPAL Via email

Eskom a sorry bunch THERE are so many sad facts around our power issues. Eskom has no competition, like SAA, which is a pathetic organisation bailed out every year by the state. Load shedding isn’t saving electricity nor is it needed; it is blackmail. It is an unsafe practice to switch the electricity on and off in areas. Once power is restored, all heating equipment is back on for longer. Where is the saving? CECIL PIENAAR Hayfields

PRESIDENT Zuma must be very short of new, shiny blame cards if he finds it necessary to pull out the hoary, tattered apartheid card to justify the Eskom debacle. Has he forgotten that government ignored the requests made in 2008 and 2010 to do something constructive about the situation? Has he not yet realised that if individuals areplacedinmanagerialpositionsforpolitical reasons, butwhoarelackingtheskillstodothe job, the result can only be a very impressive mess? When,oh,whenwillheandhisgovernment wake up to the fact that it is skills, not political affiliations, that get jobs done? Are they all so comfortable in their respective positions around the piggy trough they fail to see that unless they nurture those who fill the trough for them, it too will one day soon be empty and there will be nothing left to loot? How about some new cards for him to play with for his presents? Any ideas, anyone? AVIS ODELL Montrose, Pietermaritzburg

Safety not prioritised at public pools NUMEROUS letters have been written regarding safety at our swimming pools managed by the municipality. Despitethis, municipalofficialsinchargeof these facilities are uninterested. Recently, the management at Parks and Recreation bought and supplied our swimming pools with industrial pressure cleaners, equipment that these facilities have done without since they opened, which is some 30 years ago. Regrettably, officials in charge of our swimming facilities have prioritised cleaning equipment (which was not requested) over public safety. Children are on holiday, and many spend their time at our swimming pools. Unfortunately, with the safety at the Olympic pool not attended to, injury is imminent, but I suppose the safety issue will only be addressed after a visitor has seriously injured himself or herself. Edging closer to junk status THE South African government’s (ANC) debt rating is close to junk status. The downgrade was primarily due to the poor medium-term growth outlook due to structural weaknesses, electricity shortages, postalstrikesandafurtherdeteriorationofthe investor climate. Moody said the government’s debt-to-GDP ratio and the budget deficit would continue to rise. The ANC don’t seem to take these ratings very seriously, after all they call the shots. Eskom’s finance director said a further downgrade of the utility’s debt rating will increase finance costs by between 30% and 40%andtheSanralCFOtoldtheGautenge-toll review panel that a further downgrade of the agency’s debt rating will see it at junk status, increasing borrowing costs and chasing away investors. ItrustMrZuma’scontinuedsilenceoverthe huge problems facing our economy indicates that he has little understanding of the matter, has no answers, or is far too busy travelling abroad to regard this as important. ONSTRUCTION of Phase 2 of The Mall @ Scottsville is now complete, and a sense of excitement has been palpable throughout the local community due to the arrival of a fantastic mix of new tenants, which has extended this enticing shopping destination’s already superb offering. Phase 2 of the Centre’s refurbishment followed the extremely successful and well received Phase 1 renovations, and has been developed in keeping with the architectural style and atmosphere already established in Phase 1. This incorporates the aesthetic elements of stone and steel cladding to ensure a seamless blend between the two phases. The architectural design, overseen by Boogertman & Partners, reflects a slick and stylish, yet inviting atmosphere of glass, steel and natural finishes for an upmarket shopping experience with free car guarded

The fresh produce retailing group has fast become arguably a supermarket of choice in the country and is highly determined to become an integral part of the community. “We feel that the area is relatively untapped for this niche’brand, andthereforebeinggiventheopportunity to expand the brand locally in the new and improved second phase of The Mall @ Scottsville was an offer we couldn’t refuse,” said Rich Dolbey, the franchisee for Food Lovers Market. HE fashionable crowd showed up in their finest to see if the designers coulddeliverthegoods, andtheywere not disappointed. With the Pietermaritzburg City Hall transformed into a catwalk, not unlike those at the world’s leading fashion shows, the KZN Fashion Council put its best foot forward to showcase the designs of the province’s exciting new designers. Thirteen designers got the opportunity to show off their designs, which included Western and African influences. It was the first time the Fashion Council hosted such an event in Pietermaritzburg. The evening consisted of two shows, the first by five designers who had completed their “21 Steps to Retail” programme. This was a six-month mentorship programme for the young designers. All five designers were awarded certificates on completion. The second show had eight talented designers who participated in the SA

Fashion Week, showcasing their October classy collections. Among them was the likes of Estcourt’s own Thembeka Vilkazi from Yadah Exclusive Designs, who wrapped up the show with her unique collection inspired by democracy and the Zulu culture. Vilakazi, who has participated three times at SA Fashion Week and has been seen every year at Vodacom Durban July with her own models, said she enjoyed working with young designers and mentoring models. “My dream is to open a fashion boutique for both men and women,” she said. Other collections included Brenda Waring for Whatevs Designs with a romantic feel mixed with a touch of sexiness and vintage, while Matte Nolim’s range was inspired by technology. Councillor Mary Schalkwyk in her speech said designers should also consider opening a range for fully figured women, not only the model type. She also thanked the KZNFC for opening doors for local designers by giving them training and mentorship for retail. Models wowed the crowd as they showed the designs of KZN’s new designers at the KZN Fashion Council’s fashion show.

HE third-generation Mini Cooper hatchback arrived in South Africa early in 2014. Now Mini has confirmed its John Cooper Works (JCW) variant will arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2015. The sporty Mini JCW is 3.8m long, 1.7m wide, 1.4m tall with a wheelbase of 2.4m and, Mini says, has the most powerful engine yet fitted in a series production model” by the automaker. That clout comes from a TwinPower two-litre, turbopetrol, four-cylinder engine capable of 170kW/320Nm and driving a sixspeed manual or optional six-speed Steptronic sports transmission. Fuel consumption is listed as 6. 7 litres/100km with emissions of 155g/ km. The hottest Mini hatch yet will howl to to 100 in 6.3sec in manual guise or 6.1 when equipped with an auto. It’s equipped with new Brembo sports brake system, exclusive 17” JCW race-spoked light alloy rims, electromechanical power steering

with Servotronic, dynamic stability control and dynamic traction control, electronic differential lock and performance control. Dynamic shock-absorbers are an option. It gains sporty treatment at the front, including new diode lights, white indicators and a grille design with large cooling air inlets replacing the fog lights. It has chunky sills, JCW spoiler, sports exhausts and a unique paint job. The sports seats have integrated head restraints, JCW badging on the sills, leather-clad sport steeringwheel with shift paddles, JCW gear lever (or selector lever), special instrumentation, steel pedals and footrest, unique roof liner and Mini’s “driving excitement package”. In terms of safety it has front, side and curtain airbags, belt tensioners and pressure limiters at the front, IsoFix mounting at the rear (optional for the front), tyre-pressure monitor and what Mini calls “a partially active engine compartment

lid for optimised pedestrian protection”. The Mini JCW can be kitted with an optional head-up display, red roof and mirror covers, 18” alloy rims, JCW bonnet stripes and a host of extras in the John Cooper Works Pro design line and Mini Original Accessories programme. In terms of technology and driving aids, it will have parking radar, reversing camera, active cruise control, collision and pedestrian warnings, auto high-beam and road-sign detection. The Mini JCW can benefit from LED interior lighting, powered sun roof, auto anti-dazzle function for the external and ingernal mirrors and heatable seats. The JCW will also have Mini Connected in-car infotainment with internet connectivity, intelligent emergency call and Mini TeleServices (available with a permanent SIM card). Local specs and prices will be available closer to the launch dates. — Wheels24.

VW Jetta. PHOTO: WHEELS24

VW’s Jetta was introduced in South Africa in 1980 and has since sold more than 273 000 units as one of the world’s most successful sedans - more than 14million since 1979. Nearly a million were sold in 2013, making the Jetta one of the top selling in the VW Group. Whatever, everything can be improved, so VW has made some modest changes for 2015, among them redesigned nose and bum to be “sportier and modern”. The body has been further sculpted; the improvements, VW says, have reduced drag by another 10%. Look carefully and you’ll note a redesigned grille with three fins and a revised bumper with, depending on model, revised lights - the bi-xenon headlights and L-shaped running lights particular features. The interior has been refreshed “to ensure the new Jetta is more sophisticated” and the instrument cluster, steering-wheel,

upholstery (Trendline only) and accents are all new. The engine, however, are unchanged 1.2 TSI77kW,1.4TSI90kWand1.4TSI118kW) turbopetrol and 1.6 TDI 77kW and 2.0 TDI 103kW turbodiesel. The new visual band formed by the radiator grille and the headlights, VW says, as well as the now larger lower air inlet, “givetheJettaamoreimpressive, widerand modern appearance, reinforced by the re-sculpted fog lights”. Re-designed boot lid, tail lights, VW logo and rear bumper also identify the latest Jetta The driver is now faced by instruments in “a sporty tube look”, a multifunction display, a different steering-wheel, gloss black trim next to the gear-shifter, chromed accents, freshened air vents and ambient lighting (Highline derivatives). As many as six airbags are offered, among them new head-thorax bags for rollover protection. - Wheels24.

limited. “The challenge is to grow PSI in PMBandwehopetocreateoneschool base for PSI. That court becomes the home of PSI to the mutual benefit of the Stallions and the school.” Swart said that there is “huge potential” for growth in PMB. “The demand from our school boys and girls for good, structured indoor hockey is high. To attract more kids to go to PSI Nationals next year the big challenge is to have local school events. In our primary schools there is no indoor [hockey] so I want to introduce our U11s and U12s to this incredibly exciting sport, which has fantastic benefits to players when they play outdoor hockey.”

WO Midlands Stallions indoor hockey teams have just completed the Nolands Pro Series Indoor (PSI) Nationals 2014 tournament in Cape Town, and coach and franchise owner Brandon Swart reflects for Maritzburg Fever on his impressions. “In the boys U14 A section, we finished seventh of nine teams while in the girls U13 B we ended 12th of 15,” said Swart. It was gruelling. The teams arrived in the Mother City last Thursday and the boys played eight full 40-minute matches in the next three days while the girls played 10 full matches. It’s the second

year of the franchise in the KZN capital. PSI Nationals is a huge event, drawing 2500 participants nationwide and Namibia from the U11 age-group to U18. The 200-plus teams play 1000 matches. PSI began with just eight teams, eight years ago and its growth has been phenomenal. “I started PSI in Pietermaritzburg last year and have been surprised at the much-improved standard of play this year,” said Swart, also the KZN Inland boys U18 coach. “The biggest challenge in PMB is access to indoor hockey courts, which is strange, since we have seven excellent courts here. “But it was very difficult to book them, which made preparation
