Pietermaritzburg crime busters go big AMIL UMRAW IN a synchronised high density crime operation, members of the police cracked down on crime in Pietermaritzburg on Friday and Sat urday nights. Cold wind and sleeting rain did little to deter over 150 police and external law enforcement members from the Mountain Rise, Loop Street and Alexandra stations as they hit various parts of the city. Teams patrolled crime hotspots, nabbing drug dealers and closing down illegal shebeens ahead of the festive season. With recoveries of stolen property, drugs and alcohol valued at over R153 000, a total of 73 arrests were made over the two nights. The Loop Street department yielded the most arrests, arresting 40 criminals while the Mountain Rise force confiscated R113 000 worth of liquor, drugs and stolen property. Suspects held their heads down as they were marched in through the doors of the three stations with charge sheets filling up as both nights progressed. They were apprehended for, among others, charges of rape, pros titution, murder, drug possession and theft. The police warehouses also rapidly filled up with stolen property from television sets, kitchen appliances and computers to knives and illegal firearms. Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry explained how the operation commenced. “The operation is based on crime intelligence and careful planning. It’s simple.Wegetout, nabthecriminals, bring them in, charge them, fill in the paperwork and get back onto the streets. “There’s no time to play games,” he said. In one incident, both the son and

Police stormed into the Northdale house and swooped up the assailants while raiding the property for drugs. Along with liquor, they recovered rock cocaine, Mandrax and ecstasy with a street value of about R10 000. Six illegal shebeens were shut down by the Mountain Rise team. But it was not only the hardened criminals who felt the might of the police force. Shaun Marais, chairperson of the SAPS Youth Desk, spotted street children sniffing

glue on the corner of Khan and Greytown Road. He swiftly rounded up the boys and began to counsel them in the middle of the street about the harmful effects of drugs and the ef fects on their lives. Pietermaritzburg police Cluster Commander Brigadier Francis Bantham extended her gratitude and congratulated members involved in the operation. “Theytookthetownbystormand they were really on form. USINESSES and local residents are fed up with the paving work currently underway in the CBD, especially along Langalibalele Street. “This is taking forever to finish. There is no place for pedestrians to walk safely and we are always ducking vehicles driving down Langalibalele Street. Everything is in patches,” said Nomaswazi Dlamini. One business owner whose shop is located along Langalibalele Street near the Msunduzi Tourism Hub said that the unfinished brick paving of the pavement hinders customers from entering their shops. “The workers are always digging and patching the pavement with red bricks. Days later, you see the very same workers stripping the very same pavement and restarting the whole process. I doubt that

these people doing the paving are even trained to do the work. Almost everywhere you go, there are patches of unfinished work.” Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said that they are busywithallthecontractorstogivethemthe programme to reinstate all the work done in the CBD. “The problem with all this construction is that there was no way-leave approved, but that doesn’t mean we can’t push them to reinstate all the work. “We are gathering all the information street by street to find out who did the work from the roads department,” said Mafumbatha. She added that the project currently being carried out is being done by the municipality, and that a meeting was due to take place last week Friday on the update of the project.

A large banner hanging over the Mayor’s Walk bridge this week had many motorists in the rush hour hooting in agreement and snapping photos with their cellphones. The “A” in Zuma is the symbol of anarchy. One surprised motorist brought his car to a complete halt in the traffic, hooted enthusiastically and then drove off, as others hooted in passing. Two men are believed to be responsible for the banner. They have joined the trend of erecting a large sign on a busy road to air their concerns or anger, which was famously highlighted recently when a banner denigrating Cell C’s service levels was put up in Beyers Naude Drive in Johannesburg. Provincial ANC secretary Sihle Zikalala said they have noticed campaigns against the president and view these as attempts to undermine democracy.

OUSES built along Henley Dam which breach the National Building Regulations and the National Environmental Management Act (Nema) may have to be demolished and Umgeni Water will be responsible for that, the Executive Committee (Exco) heard recently. Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi told Exco that Umgeni Water, the owner of the Henley Damarea, hadapproachedtheMsunduziMunicipality to intervene in solving the developments on Henley Dam,tohelpwithlegalcomplianceonthismatterand where possible, form a partnership to solve the unauthorized development of Henley Dam. The above request was noted in a letter Umgeni Water had sent to Nkosi dated August 7, 2014, where Umgeni’s general manager for corporate services Mo ketenyane Mayongo cried foul on this challenge cur rently facing Umgeni. “Umgeni Water would like to put it on record that it does not have the mandate to develop land in the nature that has taken place at Henley Dam, neither does it support/ nor has it supported the activities that have taken place at the dam,” Mayongo stated in the letter. The area in question is Portion 12 of the Farm Zwaartkop Native Location No.4669 which is known as Henley Dam. The land was purchased by Umgeni Water from the Msunduzi Municipality in 1992 to use the dam to supply water for the greater Pietermaritzburg area. When the dam was decommissioned in the 1990s, Umgeni remained the owner of the land until a decision was made to dispose of it in 2008. Prior to that, the land was operated by Natal Cooperative

Timbers (NCT) as commercial forest for years until their safety was threatened when inspecting and running the forest. NCT terminated the lease with Umgeni Water around 2008. “Therearealotofdevelopmentswhichhavetaken place there. Some of those developments are in breach of the National Environmental Management Act as some have been built on municipal servitudes. There have been discussions between us and Umgeni where they cried foul that the area was invaded. “WehavelearntthattheDepartmentofEconomic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DEDTEA) had issued them with a precompliance notice which says that because there is a dam, some of the developments have breached the National Environmental Management Act. The property belongs to Umgeni and Umgeni must deal with it. Msunduzi will not be part of that. Some of the houses might actually have to be demolished,” said Nkosi. Exco member Bill Lambert said that the issue is shocking. “It is quite alarming and I am glad that it’s not us that has to deal with this. There are some magnificent houses built right along that dam.” The deputy municipal manager for economic development Dr Ray Ngcobo said that Umgeni had approached them for a Planning and Development Act (PDA) which they turned down. “We turned it down because they can’t develop a land and then ask for a PDA at a later stage. None of the people that are there have title deeds. The developer will have to take responsibility. In this case Umgeni is the developer, the illegal developer.” The municipality stated that Umgeni needs to look at a holistic development application for the entire area by way of a formal township establish ment and that a geotechnical assessment of the ar ea must be done.

Wildlands Groen Sebenza Indaba

The smallest thing … makes the biggest difference …

THE 30 Groen Sebenza interns from Wildlands attended an Indaba at Somkhanda Game Reserve. The role of Wildlands is to incubate pioneers into the environmental sector by addressing priority skills shortages and giving them the mentorship and training they need to develop themselves further before entering the competitive South African job market. This Indaba was an extension of such programmes and activities aimed at upskil-

ling and preparing these young people for the working world. The uBuntu Earth team of Wildlands facilitated this Indaba by running activities in which pioneers could share their learning and experiences over the past year, and inspire and motivate each other. The uBuntu Earth departments’ fundamental emphasis is on building capacity and enabling this group to ‘progress through the system’ or move on to other green jobs and entrepreneurial enterprises in the future.

EDICATION and love for their community has transformed the face of the Khan Road substation. For more than 20 years, this substation used to be an eyesore, with overgrown weeds, grass and litter. A group of local residents were fed up with the filth and decided to take matters into their own hands. The substation now has a flower garden which is appealingtothosewhopasstheKhanRoadandShale Place intersection. One of the residents behind the project, Mogie Reddy, said that it took community effort to clean the place up. “The overgrown grass and weeds used to block the traffic flow at this intersection. People dumped rubbish, including rubble, bottles and domestic refuse. I told myself that I would take a stand and do something about this. I contacted the municipality to see if they could come and cut the grass, which they did, but there was still a lot of work to be done.” Reddy said that about 26 people from her community contributed R20 each towards cleaning

Tallstartedin1989whenagroup of concerned citizens responded to a plea for help to do something for the increasing number of children being abandoned at Edendale Hospital. At the time, babies were being abandoned at the hospital because of the violence and social turmoil in many communities and because of HIV and AIDS. Volunteers responded to this call for help. They visited the hospital to provide care and stimulation to these abandoned children. Then in 1994 nurses at the hospital went on strike, resultinginthechildrenbeing temporarily placed with families and children’s homes outside of the hospital. As it turned out, this was a blessing in disguise because many of the families who took these children in ended up forming a bond with them and fostering them. No less than 35 children found a new home and family in this process. As a result of this success, these volunteers decided to form the Thandanani Children’s Foundation with the aim of strengthening families caring for orphans and other vulnerable children in local

communities. Since then, Thandanani has worked in communities around Pietermaritzburg to strengthen familiesviaacomprehensivesystem of family support. This system involves a range of activities that are structured in such a way as to move families from vulnerability to increased stability and self-reliance over a three year period. In this way, Thandanani strengthens the family’s ability to provide for the basic material, physical, cognitive and emotional needs of the children in their care. Thandanani’s Director, Duncan Andrew, tells the story of Sihle and his family - a typical example of the kinds of families Thandanani works with. “Sihle is 10 years old. Last year, his mother passed away. Sihle’s 72 year old grandmother Thandeka had no choice but to take in her three grandchildren - Sihle and his younger brother and sister, Sifiso and Naledi - and care for them. Although she loves her grandchildren, it is not easy. At 72 years of age, Thandeka ’s health is not good and the only income she receives is her state pension of R1 350 per month.

“The family live in a small two roomed mud and daub house, which is in need of repair, have no electricity and very little in the way of basic household goods. The loss of her daughter and the burden of care she now carries have been very hard for Thandeka and she worries about her grandchildren’s future.” Andrew goes on to explain that children growing up under these circumstances are extremely vulnerable. They often have to care for ill and dying parents and may be traumatised by loss. When their parent dies, the family usually loses income and children are often left without adequate care, shelter, food and clothing. Even when the extended family or community members take them in, they often still struggle as the extended family now has to stretch the little they have to care for the additional family members they have taken in. In circumstances like these, childrenoftengohungry, drop out of school, experience emotional or behavioural difficulties and even sometimes take to the streets, often being forced to beg or become involved in petty crime or sex work just to survive.

As a founding member of Thandanani Children’s Foundation, Penny Haswell was actively involved in providing care and support to abandoned babies at Edendale Hospital in the late 80’s. She and her family were also one of those to foster and later adopt one of the many children abandoned at Edendale Hospital at the time. When Haswell was first handed aban doned Ningi, she nearly dropped her in shock. The child was icecold, caked in dirt and

wrapped in an old rag. She was a year old and weighed just five kilograms the weight of a newborn infant. In an interview for the book “Children at the Forefront: A History of Thandanani Children’s Foundation (1989 2009),” Haswell recalled her experience: “I didn’t know what would happen. I thought we should just love her until anything happened. We had to put her into intensive care and her little hand would just touch my finger. I knew she cared. It was horrific going to see her. I went back to the hospital one day and the bed was empty. The drips were gone and I was just devastated. I burst into tears and was blindly walking out

Ultimately, this maintains the cycle of poverty and undermines the ability of the child to live a full and meaningful life. It is this vulnerability that Thandanani’s interventions aim to address. To support their work Thandanani recently launched a new fundraising initiative called 4Kids. Genéye Starling, Thandanani’s 4Kids co-ordinator explains that 4Kids aims to help Thandanani change the lives of vulnerable children and families by providing ordinary people with a variety of different ways to make a real difference in the life of a vulnerable child. 4Kids is a ‘virtual village’ of caring people who work together, and in the true spirit of Ubuntu, provide much needed support for the work that Thandanani does. In this way, 4Kids brings to life - and modernises - the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child.” Members of the public who want to find out more about Thandanani can visit their website www.thandanani.org.za and those who would like to become 4Kids Champions or Supporters can visit www.4kids.org.za or email 4Kids@thandanani.org.za

of there. I didn’t want to see any more of this awful stuff. Then the nurses came running up to me: “Hawu, Nkosazana, woza!” They dragged me to another ward and there was Ningi, propped up on a pillow, this scrawny thing, and she was full of life. Then I was happy.” To honour Haswell, who passed away on 27 October 2014, and her legacy of ‘putting children first’, the Haswell family have established the Penny Haswell Education Fund to continue her passion for promoting and fostering children’s education. The fund will be administered by Thandanani Children’s Foundation and will provide funding for the education of children in need. Contributions to this fund can be made by direct deposit into Thandan ani’s bank account or via Thandanani’s 4Kids website: www.4kids.org.za. ARITZBURG College won the Graeme Pope-Ellis Inter-schools Floating Trophy, taking the KZN inter-schools title for the eighth consecutive year. The title was decided at the Inter-schools Enduro at Camps Drift when Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse went head to head coming into this, the last event of the season, on equal points. The Enduro consists of teams of four. The Maritzburg College U18 team placed first overall and the U14 team also won their category. It was a fitting end to a successful season where Maritzburg College won the trophies for the winning school at the Fish River SA Championships, the KZN

are champs Hyundai, Kia to triple green cars EARLIER in November Wheels24 reported that Hyundai and sister Korean company Kia willpaytheUnitedStatesgovernmentapenalty equivalent to R1.1 billion to end a two-year investigation into "overstated" fuel consumption claims on about a third of its vehicle products. Following the investigation, the automakers announced a plan to triple the number of fuelefficient cars by 2020, addressing concerns about the pair's green track record and competitiveness in fuel economy. The announcement on Wednesday, 12 November came a week after the pair pledged to raise the fuel economy of their vehicles by 25% by 2020 to meet emissions regulations in the U.S. and Europe and at home in South Korea. It also followed an announcement on Tuesday 11 November that the pair would buy back R6 billion worth of shares in what was widely regarded as an attempt to appease investors angered by a R100 billion bid for property for new headquarters. Analyst Yim Eun-young of Samsung Securities said: "Investors have complained about Hyundai's lack of shareholder-friendly policies and

communication about its vision, especially after the land deal. "Today's announcement seems to be part of its efforts to soothe shareholders and better communicate with the market." Shares of Hyundai have fallen 25% in 2014, but have risen over 17% since hitting a more than four-year low on November 5. Kia stock has declined 0.9% while the benchmark index has lost 2.4%. Underlastweek’splan,HyundaiandKiawill raise their number of fuel-efficient cars to "at least" 22 by 2020 from seven now. Hyundai, Kia said in a joint statement: "We have set an internal target of making it to number two in the global eco-friendly car market, which is expected to grow from this year's 2.2 million vehicles to 6.4 million in 2020." Hyundai and Kia plan to release 12 models powered by gasoline-electric hybrid engines, expanding the line-up to small cars and sport utility vehicles. The pair's green range will also have six plug-in hybrid mid-sized and compact cars, two fuel-cell cars and two battery-powered electric cars. - Wheels24.

Inland coach is not easily pleased >> KZN Inland’s will next face archrivals KZN Coastal at the Oval

Oval in two weeks’ time against archrivals from Durban, KZN Coastal, who operate on a far bigger budget than the PMB outfit. “What is encouraging to see in the team is the pride in performance and the positive approach the players bring to each game, which is a tribute totheattackingmindsetofGrant, who is always looking for ways to win, and win well. Draws or losses are not options in Grant’s mind.” Bhamjee pointed out that Inland are still unbeaten in the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup and the possibility of winning all three trophies this season - the three-

day, 50-over and T20 competitions is not out of the question by any means. Morgan is not easily pleased, although he does give praise when praise is deserved. “While our batting has been disappointing at times, on Sunday and in the three-dayer before that our bowling and fielding, as well as the catching, was superb.” Bhamjee, who takes as much time as he can away from his busy career to come and watch the Inland lads play, is relishing the prospect of his team crossing swords with KZN

Coastal. “That match should well be a cracker as there is an individual and collective rivalry between the two sides, and each team will be keen to earn bragging rights over their KZN cousins.” PHOTO:NASH NARRANDES
