Begging to study in the UK CHELSEA PIETERSE A PIETERMARITZBURG graduate has taken to the streets to beg in the hope that she can change the world. Zimu said that there are only 600 authorised street traders. “We established that there were about 436 illegal street traders on the streets. Water pipes stolen from behind Pietermaritzburg airport NQOBILE MTOLO

WATER pipes were stolen from just behind the Pietermaritzburg Airport in Oribi recently. The manager for economic development at Msunduzi Municipality, David Gengan, said that pipes were

stolen during the process of replacing pipes behind the airport. He said that council is investigating the matter. “This is [part of] an infrastructure project that was run by the water and sanitation unit who were replacing storm water pipes at the back of the airport.

“The officials concerned are aware of the problem and they are addressing the matter and they said they will be removing all of those pipes that are still located there,” GengantoldtheExecutiveCommittee (Exco). The value of the pipes is unknown. Meanwhile, the deputy municipal

Her closest enemy SHE wafted across the sky Clothed in its’ foam Felt herself beginning to cry As she was now home. They told her home was where her heart was And in the sky her heart lay She only dreamt of the stars She wished to fly away. Inside herself she was locked Tried so hard to break free But all her attempts were blocked By her closest enemy. Maybe if she stayed locked in She could avoid every other pain Maybe the only way to win Was in herself to remain. But she was now suffocating Couldn’t breath her own breath She was left with a broken wing But it was far better than death. Finally out She was scared inside Though without doubt She wasn’t going to hide. Took her hands and covered her eyes She smiled and then shivered with surprise Breathed out and begun to feel Begun to feel that all her dreams & wishes were real Felt herself settle in She was now living within! Gravity let go of her Her wing had now healed Her body filled with glitter She was now revealed Revealed as the star she had always been. She belonged in the sky And by everyone she was now seen. Her twinkle proved her delight As well as her floating in the air In great height. TASMIYAH OUMAR Via email

Almost R2 billion owed to Msunduzi THE seriousness of the Msunduzi Municipality’s debt situation cannot be overemphasised. At end of August, the outstanding amount owed to Msunduzi

WINNING LETTER

HE breaking news of the senseless, cold-blooded killing of Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa is symptomatic of the value attached to precious human life in our country. The government cannot curb ever increasing crime. The outstanding Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was undoubtedly the nation’s, and his club’s, first choice; his flair, ability to read strikers, his agility between the posts and his ball distribution skills were lessons for young goalkeepers.

South Africa relied on his expertise - coach Shakes Mashaba readily acknowledged the fallen hero in recent games. Needless to mention, he kept clean sheets and the Bafana team under his captaincy were full of enthusiasm in their recent African Cup of Nations fixtures. OrlandoPiratestoowillmisstheir son, as many stunning saves in goal assistedtheBuccaneersinachieving successes. The killers must be hunted by the authorities and South Africans want to see justice take its course.

Significantly, we want to see the state fight crime and illegal gun ownership. The weekends’ Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs’ derby, the fourth most watched derby in the world, will be played in a very sombre mood as a son of the nation will be missing...forever. My heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the mourning football nation. As a Pirates fan for over four decades, I remain very vexed at the heartlessness in this beautiful country. JAY JUGWANTH Via email

stood at R1,816 billion. Over the period June to August, the debt increased by an alarming R238,2 million. At thisrate,thedebtwillsoonbeoverR2billion. Msunduzi cannot afford to carry this increasing debt. Who owes the money? >> Government: R167 346 843 (9,2%) >> Residential: R1 007 792 246 (55,5%) >> Business: R473 977 841 (26,1%) >> Other: R139 093 562 (7,7%)

>> Municipal: R28 194 456 (1,5%) >> Total R1 816 404 947 (100%) It is of concern that of the total, some R1,193 billion stands at 120 days plus. The majority of this older debt can be viewed as doubtful debt and will likely have to be written off. This is money that should be available for infrastructure upgrading, maintenance, housing and other needs. Msunduzi must show greater determination and urgency in collecting the money

owed. A good starting point will be with government departments whose debt is viewed as “good” debt. Why are they not paying? Business debt is also at unacceptable levels. We await a list of the 20 businesses that owe the largest amounts. It is also incumbent on individual ratepayers to pay their rates and utility accounts on time.

THE significance of Diwali will forever be a glorious celebration, serving to remind mankind that darkness is the absence of light. As this auspicious period has passed, the message of Diwali will remain universal and sacrosanct for ages to come. As human beings, we need to eliminate those destructive attributes that sow seeds of animosity and hatred. Diwali is all about that light that we need to light up our hearts. The warmth emitted from this light must bring solace and positive energy to anybody who comes in your presence. This flame must transcend all barriers that drive a wedge between people. It must be devoid of compartmentalizing our thinking into race and religion. The spirit of Diwali encompasses unity of all people, irrespective of race and religion. The universal message that permeates all religions is that we are all sparks of the same divine light, which is God the Almighty. The symbol of light manifests itself in the act of giving and sharing. In these difficult times of social and economic deprivation, we need to share and let our generosity shine through. Any act of goodwill, as simple as it may be, will result in that light within our hearts burning brighter. Invitations to any religion, beitMuslimorChristian, tojoin thefestivitiesofDiwalimustnot be construednegatively. Diwali provides us an opportunity to come together and enjoy our cultural richness and diversity with our friends from different cultures with whom we co-exist so peacefullyhere in South Africa. The Campaign was launched in August 2014 with visits to schools to encourage peers and staff to nominate Grade 11 girls making a difference in their school and community. After sifting through the entries, 20 semi-finalists were selected and went on to enjoy an enrichment workshop and interview session. Five finalists were picked from this group. A few weeks ago, the campaign moved on to a community vote, with members of the public, schools, families and friends encouraged to vote for their ultimate winner. The five finalists will all receive beautiful gifts from the sponsors, but the ultimate winner will receive a “Belle of the Ball Package” valued at R15 000 for her matric dance. This package includes a dress, shoes and bag from Lady Di Exclusive Boutique, Hair, Make-up and other spoils from Sole Salons and Spa, Jewellery from Silver Penny, a photo shoot from Natasha Brooks Photography and perfume from Just Boutique. HEN Emma Hyslop, a Grade six pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, completed a recent spring clean, she was left with a heap of items in good condition for which she had no use. Emma decided to ask her school if they could assist her in finding someone who may find these things useful. Spurred into action, staff at Laddsworth remembered a pile of lost property, some boxes of books and a photocopier machine they had available to donate. This collection was gratefully accepted by Hilton resident, Pat Kanzler, who manages Siyabonga Aftercare Centre. Laddsworth have regularly participated in the Siyabonga Christmas gift collection and aim to do so again this year.

SCHOOLS

13 The Grade six boys at Cordwalles Preparatory School spent the entire year learning about running a business, marketing and taxation before they had to put all their skills and knowledge to practice at their annual Grade six market day. This event took place in the chapel quad and was supported by many willing shoppers. At the same time, parents and boys could listen to various music groups and enjoy a meander through the Hamilton Media Centre to admire the art and DT Expo. Shopkeeper Matt Veenstra (L) took his role seriously when he served Mhleli Khuzwayo treats from his tuckshop. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

SUCCESS STORY

My name is Priya (43 years), from Howick, Pietermaritzburg. From the bottom of my heart I thank Mr Baka for saving my marriage. My husband of 12 years had been taken away from me by another woman. After moving from one herbalist to another without any success, a colleague at work told me about Mr Baka. I went there and within three days my husband came back, using water and a mirror, Baka also showed me all my enemies. I have no other way to thank this man, only to tell the whole world about him. He can also boost business, chase bad spells and tokoloshe, unfinished jobs, quick sale of property, illness, lucky oil to win at the casino and many more. Doctor sets recovery time for Schumacher

>> Injured former F1 driver Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and doctors have predicted a possible recovery within three years

A

DOCTOR who treated Michael Schumacher for nearly six months after the Formula 1 champion struck his head in a skiing fall says the injured ex-driver is no longer in a coma and predicted a possible recovery within three years. Jean-Francois Payen, a doctor at the Grenoble hospital that treated Schumacher after his injury in December 2013, said he has visited the Schumacher family at home in Switzerland to track his patient’s progress. Schumacher was with his 14-year-old son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting the side of his head on a rock and cracking his helmet. “Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages. We hope, but we have to give him time,” said Payen last Thursday.

He predicted a convalescence of one to three years. Earlier French F1 commentator Jean-Louis Moncet repeated a report that Schumacher was “waking up very slowly” from the induced coma controlling his serious brain injuries. Moncetsaid:“IsawhissonandhetoldmeSchumi was waking up very slowly, very slowly.” Payen commented: “It is to see how he progresses and then tell his wife and his children what changes I have observed. He is in very favourable conditions.” In September 2014 Schumacher left a rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland and returned home to his estate on the edge of Lake Geneva. - Wheels24.

SCHOOL SPORT

HERE is an exciting vibe at KZN Inland’s headquarters at the historic Maritzburg Oval that is contagious. From president Yunus Bhamjee to CEO Tracy Elliott, enthusiastic support staff, players and coach, there is an air of anticipation that the province’s flagship team are going to retain the two of three available national trophies won last season and maybe win the third too. It is easy to forget that on the field not too long ago, it appeared that Inland were a team going nowhere slowly. Yet the advent of fresh staff to complement the quality already there, plus the inspired acquisition by Bhamjee of coach Grant Morgan - a man with an illustrious record that includestheIPLinIndia-plusthenew mentor’s shrewd signing of key players to add to the homegrown talent already there, changed the ball

game. After languishing in the nether regions of the three national competitions for years, Morgan engineered a turnaround last season that saw Inland win the Provincial T20 Challenge title, as well as the Provincial 50-Over Challenge against far bigger, vastly better-financed provinces of the order of Gauteng, Northerns and Western Province to name three. Indeed, had it not been for a key decision that inexplicably went against Inland and an untimely intervention of the weather gods, outstanding captain Shane Burger’s side might well have made a clean sweepoftheSunfoil3-DayCupandan unprecedented hat-trick of national titles. It is difficult to compare apples withoranges, butminnowsofthepast KZN Inland are the most successful sports team in the province by some distance, yet very few people know

that. Character is the most important facet of this band of brothers. Like Kitch Christie and Jake White of the Springbok’s Rugby World Cup wins, Morgan - an astute judge of character and what makes a sportsman tick innately knows how to weld a bunch of individuals into a potent collective force. The two rounds of Sunfoil 3-Day Cup cricket matches this season provide vivid examples of exactly those traits. In Kimberley, these hard-training Inland lads were up against the wall against a rampant Griquas, yet they pulled the game out of the fire to register a meritorious victory. And at the PMB Oval just this weekend, Inland faced the firing squad against a powerful Free State outfit and were able pull off an honourable draw. Long may Inland’s success continue.

Let’s hear it for the boys

Michael Deegan (L), director of the Community Chest, getting ready for the BALLduhDash race on 7 November by being painted blue by race director John Hall.

THE men of Pietermaritzburg will be participating in a run or walk through the city streets in honour of male cancer awareness month. Previously, the men ran in red for the

DaREDevil Run, however the More Balls Than Most, brother organization to the PinkDrive, has been given the opportunity to take over this race and paint it blue. With help from Bidvest, the race has been renamed to BALLduhDash, a 4km run, walk or stroll in support of testicular and prostate cancer awareness, driving the message that early detection saves lives. “This one is for the boys. We aim to host dads, sons, uncles, brothers and friends for a fun day with a dash of running”, said Trisch Rosema, representative at More Balls than Most. The race will take place on 7 November at 4.30pm, with the start and finish line being at Maritzburg College. Entrance fee is R100 and can be made through the Community Chest. The entrance fee includes one pair of blue boxers which can be collected from the Chest offices. All proceeds made from this event will be handed over by the Community Chest to More Balls Than Most.
