KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu says he is looking forward to the events.

HE words to be learned for the much anticipated inaugural KZN Premier Spelling Bee can be found in this edition of your Maritzburg Fever. Media24 Local News KZN (publishers of the Fever, Echo, Greytown Gazette and Weekly titles) has partnered with the Office of the Premier to take the event - which started in Zululand as the Zululand Spelling Bee - throughout the province. Media24 Local News KZN, Neil Tapinos, said publishing the words during Youth Month and to coincide with Youth Day is “fitting”. “We believe the KZN Premier Spelling Bee is a vehicle with which to educate and empower our local youth. In celebrating Youth Month, Media24 Local News KZN wanted to make a tangible contribution to the memory of this day.” Speaking at the first sitting of the provincial executive council in Pietermaritzburg last week, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said he had committed the provincial government to “moving with speed to ensure youth development programmes reach all corners of the province”. “KwaZulu-Natal Executive Council met officially for the first time duringthistermofofficeandreflected on the progress this government is making with regard to Youth Development. Natal, especially the youth, are its greatest resource,” said Mchunu. “It is critical that the talent and potential of our youth is fully developed and harnessed, so that we can guarantee the continuous socioeconomic development of KwaZuluNatal and South Africa as a whole. In doing so we will ensure that we deal decisively with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” said Mchunu. Marketing manager of Media24 Local News KZN, Sharmaine Smith, said pupils have over a month to learn the words, and those who have entered the competition will then gather at events in their regions to “spell their way to success” in August. The venues, dates and times for the regional competitions will be published in July. “While we want pupils to see this event as fun, we also encourage them tostudydiligentlyfortheSpellingBee.

Calling KZN school spellers

There are hundreds of thousands of rands in bursary, cash and book prizes up for grabs for the winning spellers, their schools and their teachers. Those who apply themselves will be able to make a very real difference to their education and futures if they make it to the finals,” she said. The competition is open to grade 10and11pupils(onefromeachgrade - ie two pupils from each school) from previously disadvantaged rural schools who speak English as a second language. All entrants must be under 18 years of age. Pupils must remember that only the words printed in ‘bold’ must be learned for spelling purposes. The definitions which accompany the words are to help pupils understand the words. For the ‘Bonus Words’ section, the words and definitions must be learned. The Bonus Words are printed on the last page of the feature and are clearly marked. Pupils are not able to enter themselves into the competition; they must be entered through their schools. All of the details are contained in the entry forms, which are printed in this week’s paper and will run for the next month.

Exco concerned about stolen fire arms NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

ACCORDING to a recent Executive Committee(Exco)agenda,10firearms belonging to the Msunduzi Municipality have been stolen, lost or destroyed. The agenda shows that three casesofstolenfirearmshavebeen opened with the police. Councillor Thulani Xulu said that he was shocked by the number of stolen and lost firearms.

“Today there is a case going on where a firearm belonging to one of the municipalities was used to commit a crime. This is dangerous. If we do not check for these things in future we might find ourselves in trouble. For the stolen andlostfirearms, dowehavecase numbers for that?” asked Xulu. Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi, said that the stolen firearms cases have been reported to the police. Exco member councillor Ntokozo Bhengu asked what the municipality is doing to limit the number of stolen and lost firearms. “These firearms end up in the hands of the criminals and these are the firearms being used by the thugstoterroriseourpeople,”said Bhengu. Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela, said that it would be a very serious case if one of the firearms belongingtothemunicipalitywasusedto commit a criminal offence. “Stealing a fire arm is not with good intentions. It is to commit further crime. Let us agree that we put extra measures in place to prevent such things from happening. If they do happen, decisive action

He said that he has always had a passion for cars and enjoys modifying them with every new and interesting extra available. He said that his VW Golf 5 GTI had every modification that was available and explained that there was no expense spared on enhancing the car, which is orange in colour. “I always tell people to never own a car that you won’t turn back and want to look at and admire as you walk away. He said that when he went to his first Top Gear show, he felt as though his life was complete. “To be able just to go to the event in its final instalment in South Africa is an amazing feeling, but to know that my car will be exhibited is indescribable.”

WITH escalating government debt, the Msunduzi Municipality is trying to find creative solutions to solve this crisis. The recent Executive Committee (Exco) agenda states that as at 31 January this year, the outstanding amount was R128 829 894.43 and that R769 127.12 oftheamountwasreceivedforthe month of February 2014. The municipality has put together a team dedicated to ensuring the recovery of all outstanding amounts from government departments. The team will also ensure that the municipality closes the communication gap between itself and government departments responsible for the payments. It will also oversee that credit control and debt collection provisions are followed in full in the recovery of the amount due. The report goes on to state that the team is in constant communication with the relevant government departments as far as the debt is concerned. However, various challenges have been faced by this team as it has been recorded that some properties are not in the assets register of government and that some of the bills have not been reaching the correct sections for payment. The Exco report states that final letters of demand were hand deliveredtodifferentgovernment departments, notifying them of their arrear debt, indicating the consequences for non-payment, and that a consolidated report with provincial departments’ debt was sent to the then MEC for Finance Ina Cronje in February this year. Thus far, it has been said that the municipality has received correspondence from the Department of Human Settlement, social development, uMgungundlovu District Municipality as well as the Department of Transport.

Fire safety in high risk communities NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

IN order to contain fire disasters in high risk areas, the Msunduzi Municipality is planning to form and implement Community Emergency Response Teams (Cert) where certain individuals within communities will receive basic fire fighting training to deal with fire emergencies. The municipality is of the notion that with individuals within families and communities being the first responders in the event of any fire emergency situation, proper training is needed to contain fires before the municipal fire department can arrive. Municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi, told the Executive Committee (Exco) that volunteers in communities who will be part of Cert will undergo basic fire fighting training. “The approach was that we form these community emergency response teams by identifying volunteers in zones, and train them in basic fire fighting so that whenever there are fires, before the municipality can respond, at least the people within the locality can assist in containing those fire disasters,” said Nkosi. A report from the municipali ty’s fire and rescue unit states that fires in informal settlements, and other high risk areas, are out common, resulting in a high loss of life and property and affecting the most vulnerable citizens. Through the formation of Cert, various life saving skills can be imparted to community members in areas of fire fighting, first aid, safety and security and electrical safety. Each member who is trained will be issued with a 1,5kg fire extinguisher for use within the community or risk area that they live or to where they have been deployed.

HE Democratic Alliance (DA) leadership categorically stated in the Executive Committee (Exco) meeting that they will not take responsibility for the recent strikes which engulfed the northern suburbs around Regina Road three weeks ago. Thiscomesafterareportfromthe speaker’s office which shows that two ward councillors in the northern areas were not holding adequate community and committee meetings in their wards. The Regina Road protest took place in the wake of community members demanding answers from the municipality regarding service delivery. Council speaker Babu Baijoo said that in ward 28, of the possible 12 ward committee meetings only four took place in 2013, and of the possible four community meetings, only one was scheduled but was abandoned. “Ward 28 did not hold any community meetings in 2013. If we don’t communicate with the community at large it creates unnecessary problems. With regards to what happened in ward 28, a lot of fingers have been pointed and my office is going to investigate and come back with a report. The issue of community meetings has become a performance measurement, as theseareaudited,”explainedBaijoo. The ward councillors for ward 28 and 31 are DA councillors Soobramoney Govender and Rooksana Ahmed respectively.

Flying nuisance

I

ENJOYED the success story of the Maritzburg airport (Maritzburg Fever, 21 May 2014) but how much nicer would it be if we could all afford to use it. Because there is no competition, we the pensioners or non-business travellers are still compelled to use the King Shaka airport and then travel via Mango or Kalula. It is a huge nuisance trying to find someone to take one there or fetch one. It would be wonderful to only have to go out to Oribi. MARGARET SHEPHERD Via www.pmbfever.co.za

Dedicated work crews Make an impact

LAST Thursday evening was bitingly cold. Despite the cold, I had the warm pleasure of experiencing the commitment, courtesy and dedication of the maintenance crews who do the hard stuff for the Msunduzi Municipality. These men and women know what they have to do, and they get on with it, often under very difficult and unpleasant conditions. The municipality gets a tough grilling in the press, and I have no compunction about taking a swipe at mismanagement, but these are the work men and women who do the dirty work, and their efforts must be recognised and appreciated. I remember some years ago, standing in the rain from about 6pm until 1.30 am, talking to a young Electricity Department technician, Oscar Mzo, while he and his crew traced a major electrical cable fault, digging up an area the size of an average bedroom to a depth of at least ametre.Theyrepairedthefaultandback-filledtheentire area before leaving the site, hours after my departure. Oscar said he would not leave until his clients had power. ThatyoungmanhasgoneontojoinEskom.Heisstudying part-time while supporting his family, mother and two brothers, and will one day have his own business. ItwasthesameonThursday.Samsonandtwohelpers repaired a punctured water main, and reported their successfully completed work to head office at about 6 pm so that the roads crew could reinstate the trench. Samson said the work would be completed that night, however long it took. On the way off the estate, I checked on a sewer-clearing crew who successfully traced and cleared a blocked sewer between two manholes. It was dark and cold when they finished, working by torchlight. They were cheerful and efficient. Their young foreman, Noel, was courtesy personified. It hit me as I was taking takeaway pizzas to my warm home in my warm car. Thank you, gentlemen. YOU never know the impact your prayers can make on another individual. Just letting someone know you are praying for them can mean so much. Just the thought that you are there for someone, through the pain they are experiencing. Theyneedtoknowyoustand by them, you are listening, you care. You can save a life. Your words can make a difference, your encouragement, your positivity, your love, support and strength can change someone’s life. Wish them well - sometimes just a smile can bless their life or lift their spirits when they are down. Look outside yourself and make someone else’s day, touch a heart, brighten a soul, be a light on a dark night. Someone longs for life, help them find peace. Remind them that they are precious and priceless, their value exceeds the hurt, their boat can sail any storm, they have worth, the battle can be won, victory is theirs if they just hold on. UR front page story this week is all about our highly successful Spelling Bee competition, which members of the public will be able to attend and watch in August. SoeffectivehastheeventbeenthattheOffice of the Premier has partnered with us this year totakethecompetitionfromonearea(Zululand –wherethecompetitionoriginated)andextend it over the entire province. We are immensely proud of our Spelling Bee,whichwebelievehastheabilityandpower to teach our local young people focus, discipline, determination and that fruit is borne from hard work. However, the event does not only benefit pupils. It creates an opportunity for schools and teachers to pool their intellectual resources to teach their charges with added gusto and enthusiasm. Teachers and schools are rewarded for the

DESIREE ERASMUS efforts of their spellers, as it takes many hours of tutoring to get pupils to the point of finalists. This has been clearly seen at our previous Zululand Spelling Bee, now in its fifth year, where teachers have put in countless hours of their own time on weekends and after hours to tutor entrants. And it always, without fail, pays off. If you are a teacher at a disadvantaged school where pupils speak English as a second language, we encourage you to enter your top spellers into the competition. Let’s work together to build youth who are stronger, healthier and brighter than we could imagine.

NOVEL written by a Maritzburger is currently in the quarter finals of the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award, an annual international novel contest which attracts entries

from all over the world. Localwriter,JonathanMHemming’s debut novel Panthera, has made it through a number of qualifying rounds and from the ten thousand novels entered into the contest at the beginning of the year, Panthera has

made it to the top 100 of its category. Panthera tells the story of Baba Mkhize, an eightyyearold Zulu farm worker who has lived a sad life, full of lost love, regret and hardship. In his twilight years he is attacked by a wild leopard in a forest and after this, his life is turned upside down. Each day he grows younger and stronger and feels a frightening transformation occurring within him. With the coming of his second, and seemingly supernatural youth, he is thrown into a world in which a secret global war has been raging for centuries, in which people can assume the shapes of animals and live for hundreds of years and at the centre of this outofcontrol tornado of madness is his soulmate, who left him and vanished without a trace 60 years ago. Hemmings has been writing stories since he was a boy, and is currently working on a number of other novels, including a followup to Panthera. Panthera is available for purchase on amazon.com, and print copies are available from Bookworld at the Cascades Centre, Pietermaritzburg, as well as The Lazy Lizard Book Store in Howick.

Charlotte Cotter recently launched her debut book Balthazar’s Gift in Pietermaritzburg.

NICOLE JOHN

>>nicole@pmbfever.co.za SET in her hometown of Pietermaritzburg, Charlotte Cotter has launched her debut book, Balthazar’s Gift, during a publicity tour of South Africa. Cotter, born in Pietermaritzburg, is currently living and working in Germany. Her roots in writing began when she worked as an intern at The Natal Witness during her summer holidays while studying in Cape Town. She completed her honours in journalism and also worked at The Citizen and in corporate communications. She moved to Heidelberg with her husband in 1996 and never returned. Anavidreader,Cottersaidthatshe had always wanted to write a novel. Balthazar’sGiftissetinPietermaritzburg in 2000 and is based on a

crime reporter who, through her investigative skills, uncovers a murder and pushes towards justice and the arrest of the murderer. “When you move away from your hometown, the memories of that place become more vivid, and that is what happened for me. I set the book in Pietermaritzburg for various reasons. The most important one would be that I believe Pietermaritzburg is a microcosm of South African history, both past and recent. “Another reason is that there aren’t many books set here so I wanted to be different,” said Cotter. She said that she made use of a lot of online book writer groups. “I also gave the book to people I trust to get their reviews, critiques and opinions. Although I earn my money by writing, novel writing is completely different.” Balthazar’s Gift was launched in Germany last year but was called Balthasars Vermaechtnis. “The book was critically acclaimed, garnering reviews in some of Germany’s top national newspapers,” said Cotter. She said that the response in Pietermaritzburg has been exceptional. “We sold just about all the books at the launches here. I just want it to catch the public’s eye and appeal to their imagination,” said Cotter. The book is available in books stores and an online version will be available soon. Cotter is currently busy writing the second book in what she hopes to be a series of books.

Lynnzie Fisher (25) needed assistance to help him pay for a medical operation which will allow him to lead a normal, healthy life. Fisher has suffered with obesity since he was two-years-old. I played rugby in primary school and I lostweightbutsoonafterthatIgained again.” Weighing 225kgs, after two failed surgeries to remove the excess fat from his thighs, the first at 18-yearsold, laser liposuction and being hospitalised for a month due to Cellulitis, Fisher reached a point where he thought he had exhausted all options. “I got to a point where I was very down and the only thing that would help me get to a normal weight is to

14 foods that can cause gout

>> Men are much more prone to develop gout than women, although postmenopausal women also run an increased risk

D

IET plays a major role in the preven tion and treatment of gout. Wetellyouwhatdietarychanges you should make. Step 1: Understanding the link between gout and food Gout is a type of arthritis which usually affects the joints of the big toe. Gout is caused by deposits of urate crystals in the joints. Urate is one of the breakdown prod ucts of compounds called purines. People who suffer from gout tend to either pro duce more urate than normal or to excrete less in the form of uric acid. Gout is usually accompanied by raised blood urate levels. Purines which are broken down to urate and uric acid originate from two sources, dietary protein and body synthesis. Men are much more prone to develop gout than women, although postmeno pausal women also run an increased risk. Factors that can precipitate a gout at tack, include: •Overweight many patients who suffer from gout are overweight or obese. •Alcohol acute attacks of gout are often precipitated by overindulgence in alcohol. •Dietary purines eating foods rich in purines (meat, fish, fish roes) can cause an attack •Starvation or verylowenergy diets blood urate levels rise dramatically when bodyproteinsarebrokendownduetostar vation or very low energy intake •Kidney disease any disease, such as chronic renal failure, which prevents the kidneys from functioning properly and excreting sufficient urate can cause gout •Other diseases diseases such as leukae mia or psoriasis can cause increases in urate production •Drugs chemical compounds which decrease the excretion of urates, such as the socalled thiazide diuretics, can cause

Flu myths MANY misconceptions about the flu virus and vaccine persist, despite the widespread impact of the disease and the benefit of vaccine. Here an expert debunks six of those myths. 1.Myth:Fluisnomorethananuisance, much like the common cold that cannot be prevented. Fact: Flu is a severe and sometimes life-threatening disease that causes250000-500 000 deaths worldwide annually. You can avoid getting it by going for a flu shot every year. 2.Myth:Youcanget flu from the injectable vaccination. Fact: The injectable vaccine does not contain any live virus, so it is impossible to get flu from the vaccine. Minor side effects may occur in some people such as mild soreness, redness, swelling at the injection site, headache or a low-grade fever. Most of the side effects are due to the body’s immune response to the vaccine. 3. Myth: It is not necessary to be immunised against

Cut down on alcohol intake drasti cally to avoid gout.

a gout attack It is clear that your diet can play a role in your attacks of gout. Step 2: Adopting new, healthy habits You can reduce your risk of another gout attack. Follow these guidelines: •Reduce weight. •Avoid alcohol: Cut down on alcohol intake drastically. If necessary avoid all alcohol or restrict drinking to less than two drinks a day. A harsh, but effective way of prevent ing gout. •Avoid gorging: Avoid rich, heavy meals which contain lots of fat and purines – i.e. the typical Christmas dinner is an excellent example of a meal laden with fat and purines. •Avoid purines: Avoid highpurine foods like liver, kidneys, sweetbreads, sardines, anchovies, fish roes (eggs and caviar) and meat extracts. •Drink water: Drink six or more glasses of water throughout the day and a glass at night before going to bed to help the kidneys excrete urates.

flu every year because protectioniscarriedoverfromprevious vaccinations. Fact: The flu virus strains circulating in the community change from year to year. Because of this, a new vaccine is made each year to protect against current strains. Vaccination is especially important if you have not had pandemic H1N1 (swine flu) yet. 4. Myth: Only the elderly are at risk for developing serious complications from the flu virus.

•Go easy on caffeinated drinks: Don’t over do tea and coffee drinking and switch to rooibos tea if you find your joints start aching after a coffee/tea binge. Moderation and abstinence from alcohol those are the solutions to gout. Step 3: The basic principles of restricting dietary purines •Water Drink at least six glasses per day and make sure that you have one of the glasses before you go to sleep. It helps getting rid of uric acid. •Tofu (bean curd) Use as protein source. Research suggests that it increases uric acid secretion. •Macronutrients Diet should be relatively high in carbohydrate (like bread, rice and pasta), moderate in protein (e.g. tofu) and low in fat. •Alcohol An excess of alcohol should be avoided. Total abstinence and avoidance of alcohol may be required in severe cases. •Body weight – Maintenance of, or gradual reductionto, idealbodyweightcouldprove helpful. The absolute don’ts: Avoid foods with a high purine content. The following foods contain 100 to 1 000 mg of purine nitrogen per 100g of food: •Anchovies •Brains •Consommé •Goose •Gravy •Heart •Herring •Kidney •Mackerel •Meat extracts •Mincemeat •Mussels •Roe •Sardines •Yeast (baker’s and brewer’s, taken as

Fact: Influenza impacts people of all ages. Young children are at higher risk of severe infections than older children and adults, and pandemic H1N1 typically causes more severe disease in pregnant patients during any stage of pregnancy. 5. Myth: If I missed the chance to get an influenza vaccination before the winter season, I have to wait for next year. Fact:It’snevertoolatetobevaccinated. The best time is before the

flu season, but vaccination during the flu season is still beneficial as the virus circulates well into winter and early spring. 6. Myth: Too many vaccinations may overload a young child’s immune system. Fact: Everyone’s immune system can respond to a vast number of proteins, such as those included in vaccines. It was estimated that an infant’s immune system can respond to 10 000 of these proteins at one time.

Silver Heights deputy principal, and coordinator of events, Bubs Armoogam, believes that exposure to a holistic education is vital to the success of an individual. Armoogam, principal Dina Moodley and a supportive staff have contributed to the overall achievement of the pupils. According to Armoogam, consideration of contextual factors and identification of learner’s unique talents is key to the success that the school has achieved. Moodley was quick to praise the remarkable achievement of the school and applaud Armoogam’s dedication and tireless efforts to involve the pupils in activities both academic and non-academic, so that they develop their confidence and self-worth.

TECH TALK

TOO long, didn’t read. Terms and Conditions can be tedious, especially when installing your brand new software. You’ve been waiting for the latest version of your anti-virus and you are worried that you may get infected, or you cannot workonyourexcelspreadsheetuntilyouactuallyinstallMicrosoftExcel, so you click the checkbox that states you have read and agreed to the termsandconditionsandclicknext.Surelythiswon’tcomebacktohaunt me, someone somewhere has read these and would have kicked up a fuss if there was something wrong. Not quite. A survey done in the UK showed that only seven percent of the population there read the terms and conditions. Those who did not agree simply did not install the software. This is mostly because the constant legal mumbo-jumbo is so tedious and dry that it almost feels physically painful to read. Interestingly enough, Microsoft have recently announcedthattheyarechangingtheirServicesAgreementandPrivacy Statement, avoidingasmuchlegaljargonastheycanandalsoimproving user privacy. With the updated documentation, Microsoft have vowed to not use content in your email (and other forms of communication and document saving) to target you with adverts. By doing this, they are contractually binding themselves to prevent your private information from being accessed. A refreshing move that many are ecstatic about!

HOCKEY World Cup 2014 in The Hague, Holland - the experience of a lifetime. The most delicate of skills with stick on ball, brilliant team performances, goalkeepers who appear octopus-like in their ability to find an arm or leg to get in the way of goalshots for the top corner of the net, capacity crowds at Holland’s games clad in orange and singing, chanting and clapping for just about the full 70 minutes…I could go on and on.
