HAOS spread throughout the area along Regina and Khan Roads on Monday following an illegal protest by the residents in the area. According to sources, the protest was a result of the resident’s electricity being disconnected, even after they claim to have paid their accounts. The clash between the Ward 28 residents, which included members from both the informal settlements and formal houses, resulted in a standoff between police and themselves. Members of the police had closed offentrytotheareawhiletryingtokeepthesituation contained. The illegal gathering is said to have started in the early hours of Monday morning. The protestors paid no attention to members of the police force, fire department or other law enforcement officials and proceeded to burn tyres, tree stumps and anything else that they could get their hands on. Residents from the area were forced to stay in their homes as a result of the violence. Some were even forced to miss work and school. When Maritzburg Fever visited the site of the protest, which was outside Kharina Secondary School, litter was strewn all over the streets together with the remnants of smashed glass and burnt items. Somepupilsfromtheschoolintheareawere seen in groups along the side of Khan and Regina roads because they were not allowed to

enter the area. Police were still keeping an eye on the area even though the crowd had dispersed from the streets and were back at their settlement. The protest continued towards the latter part of Monday afternoon when tyres were being burnt and the violence erupted again, although to a lesser degree. By yesterday morning, there were reports thateverythingwasbacktonormalandthatthe roads had been cleared after members of the Msunduzi Municipality were in talks with the protesters to resolve the matter. “The speaker has sent the rapid response teammemberstotalktothecommunityofward 28 to hear their issues,” said municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha.

Speaking to the media, Scott said that she recognizes the excellent work done by Cronje and she will do her utmost best to do the department and the province proud. “I do not regard this as an administrative task only. Labeling the fire resistant suit ‘hot and heavy’, Nomnganga said that the inside is equipped with a fan to keep the electricians cool. “The suits comes in one standard colour from the manufacturer. You cannot even burn them and we have actually proven that. This is

of high quality. The bigger municipalities like Cape Town and eThekwini use the very same protective gear,” explained Nomnganga. Mayor Chris Ndlela said that the municipality will not conduct any tests on its employees to prove the strength of the suits. “A responsible employer should be responsible for the safety of its employees,” he said.

and was a finalist in the feature writing category. Other finalists included South Coast Fever journalist Candyce Krishna, who made it to the top 10 for journalist of the year, and Desiree Erasmus, who made it to the top three for columnist of the year. The South Coast Fever also made it to the top 10 for “best corporate owned free sheet”. A record number of entries - 750 - were received for this year’s competition from local newspapers, community radio stations and community television stations. N order to prevent further injuries and death of its electricity staff, the Msunduzi Municipality has purchased fire resistant work gear which will protect its electricity employees while they carry out their duties. Costing a hefty R200 000 for 20 suits, Msunduzi’s deputy municipal manager for infrastructure, Sabatha Nomnganga, told the Executive Committee (Exco) that every individual who is authorized to use the suit will have to sign for it so that should the suits get lost, the municipality will deduct from the salaries of those responsible. OUTH For Christ recently held its annual general meeting at Christ Church Pietermaritzburg, where many role players, sponsors and partners gathered together to reflect on the year that was. Chairman of the board of directors, Brian Govender, reported that through the help of international and local sponsors, YFC managed to have a successful year. “We want to go on record and thank our valued funders, without whom none of this would be possible. With the relationships we have formed thus far, we are confident that we will be able to fulfil the mandate set out by YFC for the year to come,” said Govender.

Sally Mann, regional director of YFC, emphasizedtheimportanceoftheworktheydo at YFC. “We are not sitting at a desk crunching numbers; we are playing with kids and looking after their wellbeing.” She said that it is the responsibility of YFC to look after the mental, social and spiritual development of children in underprivileged communities. “Without the people who support the organization, the staff and volunteers, YFC would not be able to function. It is my privilege to lead the team and I am excited about the future,” said Mann. With a clean audit given by Price Water House Coopers, YFC is looking forward to a successful 2014.

ICHOLAS Gwala will be running his fourth Comrades Marathon this Sunday, and will be running for the Community

Chest. Gwala, a service advisor of First National Bank in Boom Street and minister at Restoration of Grace Community Centre, said he chose the Community Chest because he believes it is a charity for the people and will reach as many needy people as possible. He completed his first marathon in June 2011, and two thereafter between 10 and 11 hours. This is the first time he will be competing to raise money for the needy. “I have compassion and a caring attitude towards the destitute. Since I’m a minister of God’s word, caring for people socially and spiritually is my calling,” said Gwala. He said that he has been training intensely for over five months now and is confident that he will be able to complete another marathon. “There is no doubt that I am looking forward to it,

even though the down run is not too good for my knees,” he said. Donations have been slow but he has raised some money. “I need people to support me because I do it not for myself, but for destitute people.” He joins over 400 athletes competing to raise money for various charities. To show support for Gwala, visit http://www.comrades.com/charities/race-4charity, type Nicholas Gwala and then make sure to click donate.

A potential solution to the problem, adopted by a growing number of developing countries, is to link smaller, local sites together into a heritage route, which is then marketed as a package. SIX lucky Carter High School pupils have been chosen to represent South Africa at the 2014 Shanghai International Cities Youth Camp from 16 to 29 July. The school was selected by the Department of Education this year to participate in the initiative by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, topromotefriendshipandunderstanding but, most importantly, to build relationships between international cities. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, the pupils were very excited to be afforded the opportunity to be ambassadors for the country. The Shanghai Education Commission will be responsible for the pupils’ expenses when in the country, including meals, accommodation, activities and local transport. The only expense the pupils’ have is the plane ticket and airport taxes. The school, together with parents, sponsors and the pupils, have been hosting various fundraising initiatives to raise the money for the airfares. They have also received generous sponsorships from Govender’s Garage, Shuter and Shooter, David Harley and other family donations; however they are still R25 000 shy of the required amount. “We are doing everything we can to raise the funds for the pupils, because it would be heartbreaking for them not to be able to go and represent the country. We have built the dreams of the children and they have now been

given the opportunity by the department [of education],” said teacher, Michelene Savary. The estimated cost per pupil is R11 000. The money raised thus far is R45 000. The pupils, together with the school at large, appeal to the community and especially corporate businesses to help them raise the necessary funding. “We will do everything to repay the trust that the department has put in us to be the South African representatives,” said Adam Butler, one of the pupils selected. Many of the pupils expressed that as they get closer to July, reality starts setting in and their nerves and excitement increases. For many of the children, this will be their first opportunity to leave South African soil and travel overseas. “It is such an honour for us to be chosen; this is going to be a real adventure,” said Luhle Shange. “We are making a general appeal to the community to get involved. Any donations towards the trip will be greatly appreciated,” said Jenny Rogers, school marketing manager. Anydonationswillberecordedontheschool website and social media platforms. Grade 10 St Nicholas Diocesan School steel drum players Sinothile Zulu (L) and Amanda Nkosi.

S

T Nicholas Diocesan School in Jabu Ndlovu street has for many years been known for its famous steel drum band. The School won the national steel drum competition for several years running and was a fixture at the Comrades Marathon where they played at the Nedbank Green Mile. Unfortunately, a decision had to be taken a few years ago to cut back on costs as the tuition and hiring of steel drums was proving too expensive. The school did not own its own steel drums and had to make use of an outside steel drum

expert to bring his own drums. Happily, the school is now able to report that a good set of high-quality steel drums has been sourced in Port Elizabeth, and been purchased. The instruments arrived a few weeks ago. With its own set of steel drums, St. Nicholas is now able to resume its legacy of exceptional steel drum playing. The pupils are still re-learning the art of playing these drums so at this year’s Nedbank Green Mile the trusty marimbas will once again be on display.

As part of the Grade 11 consumer studies coursework, the Grade 11 pupils at Howick High School learned to bake and decorate a sponge cake. To enhance the learning experience, Alexander Poltera executive chef and instructor at Fern Hill Hotel and Training College, and his head pastry chef, Mums Cele, were invited to critique the cakes and give the pupils some valuable feedback. They also selected the cake which they felt had displayed a good variety of icing and decorating skills and this was awarded to Kendal Havard (L) and Dannica Baillie (R). They have been awarded a private skills lesson at the Training College.

World No Tobacco Day WORLD No Tobacco Day takes place on 31 May, the aim of which is to focus on the increased use of tobacco among the youth. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most people start smoking before the age of 18 and almost a quarter start using tobacco before the age of ten. According to Cansa’s Head of Health, Professor Michael Herbst, the tobacco industry actively targets the youth with appealing products and expensive marketing strategies and provides flavoured cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. “Young adulthood is the most susceptible and vulnerable period to

start using tobacco products and a main target for the tobacco industry. The resting heart rate of youth that smoke is faster than that of their peers. Long-term effects before the age of 18, include chronic diseases such as lung and stomach cancer, stroke and heart disease,” said Herbst. Hubbly bubbly, waterpipes or hookahs are more dangerous. Herbst warns of the increased use of water pipes, hubbly bubbly or hookah smoking amongst young people. “It is especially bad because their lungs are still growing and can be damaged ,” said Herbst. TECH TALK

THIS last week has been an interesting week on the IT news front. Last week Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the new Surface Pro 3. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it is Microsoft’s latest and greatest in tablet/laptop convertible technology. The latest edition sporting a 12 inch screen along with the fourth generation Intel Haswell processors. One more zinger: it is 30% thinner than the MacBook Air. The new tablet isn’t the only big thing from Microsoft: eight million students in Thailand, along with 400 000 teachers, are getting access to Microsoft Office 365 for education. This is by far the largest cloud education initiative yet, and once again shows Microsoft’s dedication to education and growth. Google has also been making waves in the last week. Google has overtaken Apple as the world’s top brand. Apple had held the number one ranking for three years running before being knocked down by the popular search engine provider. With the coming of Google Glass, the improvements to the Android Operating System and the constant evolution of the Google Search Engine itself, there is no doubt as to why Google have made such strides. For the gamers out there, some big news, the MSI GT70 is making massive strides in compact technology. It’s available with a GT880 8GB GFX card and 32GB of RAM! Never mind the 1TB hard drive and both the 384GB Solid State Drives. This is a laptop to remember!

Not rocket science JONATHAN COOK LAST week, the slow pace of transformation, so reviledbythepowersthatbe, wasdiscussedand the conclusion was reached that this disappointing state of affairs at senior level is being tackled incorrectly. The solution is not rocket science, just common sense. Primary schools, those schools with a sporting history, strive even harder today to improve standards and are the major force behind the number of previously disenfranchised children coming through the system and

making it by virtue of merit alone. Thesituationathighschoolscontinuesinthis vein, althoughquotasatprimaryandsecondary system at provincial level, where the powers that be have a say, does become bedevilled with selection based on colour. This does cause some white children (okay Ihavehadtobringindifferentshadesofmelanin for ease of getting the point across) to become disheartened, but those with a genuine future are, for the most part, among the fortunate few who make the cut for the white quota. Yet you still have farcical situations where people of colour (what stupid descriptions these things are - white is also a colour) in school second teams make selection for provincial schools’ sides and so destroy any white child’s notion of selection based on merit. If the actual model used in the established

schools - selection on merit alone - was used at provincialandnationalage-grouplevel,thebest would be recognised and respected. As things currently stand, the established schools are bringing talented players of colour into the fold through bursaries and the benefits are enormous. The school ensures a mix of cultures, the children interact and recognise that they are essentially all the same, while the players of colour, in many cases, are exposed to a whole new range of life experiences offered by these schools (a seemingly endless number of extracurricular activities to sample and enjoy). However, only a tiny percentage benefit from this opportunity. The old Communist system, in its pure form, is what this country needs. Qualified sports personnel should be funded

by our taxes that are allocated to sport, to go into communities with difficult socio-economic conditions and each young child of pre-teen age should be tested by approved scientific methods toidentifythosewithexceptionalsportingtalent and these children must be funded, monitored by experts and offered the opportunities that established sports schools bring. Only then will the tip of the iceberg become a mountain of talent pouring into the post-school talent pool and then selection at nationallevelwillbedevoidofthecolourconsideration.

Atotalof27gameswereplayedover the weekend, with each division having three tough games a day. Six regionsparticipated, allgettingagame a day. The regions were Durban Coastals, Midlands, Northern Natal, Pinetown and Districts, Southern Coastals and Zululand. In the Merit division, or the U13A sides, Durban Coastal and the Midlands didn’t drop a game over the three days. In the final game of the three days, the two teams clashed to a 5-5 draw, proving how level they were.

In the U13B sides, the Durban Coastal team were the only team not to drop a game. They opened up their scorecard, trouncing the team from Northern Natal 74-5 on Thursday. The U12 teams had two regions that did well. The Midlands team won two games and drew against Northern KZN, with the consistent Pinetown and Districts team winning all of their games. All the games were 50 minutes long with the lads changing sides after 25 minutes. Forty-four lads have been invited back to participate in the next round of trials on Wednesday, 28 May. These boys will make up the two teams, the U13A KZN side that will be competing in the Craven Week in Durban and the U13B KZN team that will travel to Sasolburg. There were 22 lads in the U12 age

group who have also been invited back to the next trials for selections for the U12 KZN side that will travel to Vryheid. “A superb festival!
