T

HE lack of respect for the dead in city graves is increasing with theft and vandalism that has riddled the historic Commercial Road Cemetery for many years taking place. Not only have graves been damaged, but with it pieces of Pietermaritzburg’s history lost. The cemetery holds about 11 000 graves and is the resting place of many leaders in Pietermaritzburg history including Anglican priests, Dutch Reformed Church ministers and leaders of the city and the country. While this is not only the burial place of prominent historical people, it also holds memorial stones of people who died during the Boer War, and veterans who lost their lives in the line of duty. When Maritzburg Fever visited the cemetery recently, fencing along the Miller Street entrance was cut away to make an entrance for vandals. While some gaps were fixed, a neatly cut square was still open allowing anyone to enter at any time. The cemetery is littered with hundredsofcondomwrappersandusedcondoms, allegedly used by prostitutes who work up the road from the cemetery and it has been said that the cemetery is used

by them at night. According to Eckhard von Fintel and John Deare from the Family History and Geological Society, the destruction to the cemetery gets worse every time they visit the site. Thieves are stealing stone crucifixes, headstones and grave decorations. Historical tombstones fashioned by stonemasons have been stolen to the extent that very little remains of the original headstones. Von Fintel said that on 26 June he saw items from the cemetery being carried away in black refuse bins down the Chief Albert Luthuli Road in broad daylight. Two brazen thieves were seen carrying parts of the wrought iron and metal surroundings of graves walking towards Prince Alfred Street. “I passed them, stopped, got my camera ready and turned around. Stopping opposite them I quickly took a photo, but they had noticed me and hid their faces. “They then turned right into Prince Alfred Street and walked fast. I passed them and stopped to take another photo. When I looked back they had disappeared, leaving their haul on the pavement,” said Von Fintel. While Maritzburg Fever was on site, municipal workers were cleaning up the

garden which, compared to other cemeteries in the city, has neatly cut grass making it easy to walk through. Another concern for Von Fintel and Deare is the dilapidated state of the Lychgate building on the premises which usedtohousethepeoplewholookedafter the cemetery many years ago. He said families used to congregate in the building with the coffin before moving to the grave site. The building is now almost crumbling to the ground after thieves stole wood from the roof to make fire and broke down some of the walls to sell the bricks leavingotherwallsbucklingattheseams. Deare said the society had asked the municipality to remove the doors from the building a few years ago to prevent people from living inside. However, this does not seem to have stopped vandals. Deare said that the stone, iron and metalareusedfortwothings, eitherrecycling where they are sold to some memorial places or they are destroyed by devil cult worshippers who destroy any religious symbols. “While security at the cemetery is questionable and maintenance is on the municipality’s agenda, the issue lies with citizens showing total disrespect and disregard for our the history,” said Von Fintel.

The side of the Lychgate building, where families once paid their last respects to their loved ones before their burial, is strewn with litter and used as a home for vagrants.

Msunduzi Municipality has about 450 kms of gravel road networks which need to be maintained every year. Only 12kms of gravel road will be maintained. This equates to 1,5km road per ward. Contractors Sinothando, High & General Kerush and Sulumane, have been appointed by the municipality on a three-year contract basis to undertake the gravel road maintenance programme. A report from the infrastructure business unit states that the budget in the current financial year is not enough to deal with the addressing the gravel road dilemma. The report also states that contract workers will be sourced from the affected wards where construction is taking place. A priority list will be used to identify problematic roads.

hand clothing at this key spot. Last month members of the Executive Committee (Exco) stressed the importance of dealing with informal trading in this precinct. This came about after Exco passed a draft on the city’s informal economy policy. The policy targets small and unregistered informal businesses, and applies mainly to hairdressers and barbers, traditional medicine, traditional wear and bead work, pay phones, shoes and shoe repairs businesses, taxi drivers, photographers, cardboard collectors, panel beaters, car wash and waste pickers, and informal second-hand clothing traders. He was shortly interrupted by a co-worker who asked the reporter, “As you are asking us these questions, what is it that you want to do? “What do you want from us? “What kind of information do you expect from us because we do not want to get into trouble?” Other informal traders along Langalibalele (Longmarket) Street have said that they are willing to participate provided that the municipality does not remove them from where they are currently selling their goods. “There are no jobs and this is our only bread and butter. “The municipality should not take that away from us,” said one trader.

Justice for Jake >> ‘He was just laying on the tar as two guys kicked him’ NICOLE JOHN

M

ESSAGES of grief and pleas for justice have flooded social media from the friends and family of Jake Smith who was stabbed to death outside the KFC in Armitage Road in the early hours of Sunday. The 23-year-old lost his life following an argument tbetween a well-known soccer player over Smith and his friend, Robin Volmink, allegedly jumping the queue Fondly known as ‘Khumalo-Boi’, Smith was well known in the motorsport world having participated in many spinning and drifting competitions in Pietermaritzburg and out town. His friends have taken to Facebook by starting a page called ‘No Bail for Murderer of Jake - Khumalo Boi Smith’ which already has over 1 500 likes. People on the page have posted Friends and family put flowers outside the KFC DriveThru in Armitage Road in memory of Jake Smith. PHOTO: FACEBOOK

messages of love and expressed how much he will be missed. They have also expressed their hope for justice, appealing to the courts not to allow bail for his killers. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever Volmink said it all happened so fast he did not even know his friend had been stabbed. “He was just laying on the tar as the two guys were kicking him. I ran across to try and pull them off him and that is when my girlfriend shouted that the one guy had a knife. I didn’t even see Jake getting stabbed. It just happened so fast. The next thing I saw was the hole in his chest, near his heart and blood pouring out,” said Volmink. Volmink added that although reported in other newspapers, the alleged suspects did not help his friend. “No one helped him besides us. The other guys were the ones that caused it. There’s no truth in them saying that they helped Jake because they didn’t,” he said. VolminkdescribedSmithas“oneofthebest” in the motorsport industry. “He was so passionate about cars. He was incredibly talented and will be greatly missed.” He added that the day before Smith died they were working together to build the engine for his car which he would participated this Saturday at the Sidewayz Market. “Anyone who knew him knew what a good person he was. This was such a senseless killing. He was my close and dear friend, we did so many things together. I hope that justice is done.” According to Captain Thulani Zwane of the SAPS, a case of murder is being investigated. It

HAT once was a safe and peaceful street has now become a hot-spot crime area with crimes being committed on a daily basis. Thomas Street has been riddledwithcriminalactivityrangingfrompick pocketing to armed robbery. The latest crime in the area was an armed robbery on 3 July at Doctor Cassimjee’s rooms where the doctor wasallegedlyheldup as he was closing his surgery. It is further alleged that the two men were armed and stole his daily takings. A source, who requested anonymity for fear of being attacked, said she has also been a victim of crime in that area on numerous occasions. She said there are two specific men who walk up and down the street committing crimes. She believes they are using a remote block mechanism to jam a car’s central locking and alarm systems. “Two months ago, at about 3pm, the two guys tried to jam my car. Fortunately, they were unsuccessful. A few days after that my husband was parked in a lane off Thomas

Streetandwhenhegotbacktothecarthewheel caps and windscreen wipers had been stolen.” Shesaidatonepointtherewereonlywomen who owned or managed the shops in Thomas Street and did so without fear. “It was so safe. We had no worries. Now every second or third day thieves are snatching chains off people’s neck.” The source said she was held up in her shop. She claims that two men came into the shop and demanded that she give them all her airtime. When she refused they tried to intimidate her, but were not armed. Fortunately, her male friend came into the shop and chased them out. Safe City manager Lucas Holtzhausen said in June there had been two cases of robbery, two cases of theft out of a motor vehicle, one case of fighting and one case of burglary reported. “Taking these statistics into consideration, very little crime gets reported to the police from residents or businesses in Thomas Street. “We request all people living or working in the area to report crime to the police or send us an SMS to 083 767 7233 regarding any suspicious activities or behaviour seen by them,” said Holtzhausen.

LIFE HILTON PRIVATE HOSPITAL AND HILTON HEALTH FEATURE

Healthy Hilton >> Project will be flagship

DENTIFYING the niche in the market for medical hospital facility within the Pietermaritzburg Hilton and surrounding areas, local developer André Voigts conceptualised and drove the project to develop a private hospital. development approvals and processes. Life Healthcare Group partnered in this R200 million venture. Due to the shortage of beds in local and surrounding hospitals, the idea of developing a new hospital was a

welcomed proposition. The Life Hilton will be the flagship hospital for Life Healthcare Group. The financial model of the group concept is leading in terms of emerging trends and to create opportunities to allow practitioners to invest and therefore become administrators of their own hospital, as well as shareholders. This in turn, presents a management module that benefits the patient, practitioner and shareholders.

Due to the accessibility from the highway, position within the Midlands, the patient care synonymous to Life Healthcare Group; the progression of development in the healthcare sector will naturally centralise to Hilton. Due to this forecasted migration the demand for a doctors block and practitioner rooms was realised and conceptualised. This development is aptly named Hilton Health — Partnering in Healthcare. Hilton Health, is a commercial and medical block with a vision of partnering in health. The concept is based around the delivery of a wide spectrum of high quality primary healthcare and health-related services in a holistic and multidisciplinary manner creating convenient medical hub. Hilton Health is currently under construction and will share an entrance with Life Hilton (the flagship hospital for Life). The hospital and commercial block are independent of

each other. However, the relationship between the two developments is symbiotic, each entity supporting each other, working together to form an integrated approach to medical care. This will lead to much improved patient care and a quick turn around is envisage. Healthcare, in general, is often not integrated and rather than supporting they are opposing which often leads to the demise or the result ofalowreturnoninvestment, inother healthcare institutions. Careful consideration is given to each prospective investors and tenants to ensure we have a balanced integration of the various disciplines, thereby ensuring Hilton Health is a success. Exciting tenant news is our oncology department whose aim is to be the best oncology department nationwide. Other negotiations involve a well known fertility clinic which will be most welcomed. Careful consideration is given to each prospective investor and/or tenant to ensure we have a balanced integration of many disciplines, making Hilton Health a success. Hilton is fast becoming one of the most exciting commercial and residential development nodes in the province. The overall trend is to decentralise from city centers and establish within an area that is central and convenient without factors such as traffic congestion. Hilton is becomingthehubofhealthduetoitsaccessibilityandintegratedpracticingwhich makes it convenient for the general public. They aim to become the best center or medical center where service delivery, medical care, up dated technology, shared resources and information is synonymous with Hilton Health. Integral partnering within this collaboration of medical professionals, striving for excellence is a winning combination. Hilton Health is destined to be a high-performing network of multidisciplinary providers recognised as the leader in integrated health care centers. Integrating respected practitioners from multi disciplines, to provide and enhance standards of patient-centered care and excellence. Providing high-quality, co-ordinated patient care with a holistic approach, focusing on wellness. Using evidence-based medicine, driven by shared data is the vision of this leading healthcare facility.

Life Hilton Private Hospital A new development

The development of Life Hilton Private Hospital, a collaboration with the Life Healthcare Group and local business partners Andre Voigts and Protus Sokhela, is more than 25% complete, and well on track to meet the May 2015 deadline. “The brief to A3 architects was to design the hospital with a strong focus on aesthetics and green principles, not only on optimal functionality. We want the community to be proud of its hospital,” says Craig Koekemoer, regional manager at Life Healthcare. Specialist medical representatives have been consulted on each aspect of the design to ensure practicality and efficiency. Initially, the hospital will have five theatres and 94 beds, but the astute design allows for additional wings to be built in the near future without impacting on hospital operations. NMC, the lead partner in the joint venture, has displayed superb project implementation and planning skill to ensure that the development remains on track, working around the clock to ensure timelines are met.

Inspiration

“Expanding our reach to accommodate the growing demand for private healthcare in South Africa is part of Life Healthcare’s strategy, and we are delighted to be building a brand new hospital from scratch,” says Francois Theron, senior business development manager for Life Healthcare. Following several detailed studies of the region, the requirement for additional hospital beds was identified. The new state-of-the-art hospital will serve the growing, vibrant community of Hilton and the greater Pietermaritzburg and Howick areas.

Top: An artists’s impression of the hospital once completed. Right: Current status on the progression of the Life Hilton Private Hospital.

Offering

The main centres of excellence offered at the hospital will be general surgery, orthopaedics, maternity and paediatrics. Five theatres, including one laminar flow theatre will be fully equipped with the latest medical technology. The development of a medical centre adjacent to the hospital, is currently also in progress, and will house a retail pharmacy and consulting rooms for doctors. The development will provide a convenient one-stop shop for health services to the community. Life Healthcare is in the process of sourcing top quality specialists and skilled nurses to provide the level of attentive quality care for which the Group is known. We are recognised throughout the industry for the high calibre of our nurses and the standards of nursing which are continually enhanced through refresher courses by our Life College of Learning. We make Life Healthcare a great company to work for through an environment in which people are empowered to develop to their full potential; and ongoing investment in staff development. Our priority is to focus on the delivery of a unique and special brand of health and care to patients. In a Life Healthcare facility, supporting doctors, nurses and administrative staff strive to optimise and enhance our patients’ experience. Our investment in development and training is designed to retain and motivate staff to ever higher standards of health delivery and provision of care. As there is a national shortage of certain critical nursing skills, Life Healthcare has taken the step of recruiting highly competent and SA Nursing Council accredited Indian nurses to bolster our delivery of quality patient care.

A ‘green’ hospital

Life Hilton Private Hospital, which is the first Life Healthcare hospital in the area, has been billed `the greenest hospital in the Group’, due to the fact that a great emphasis has been placed on making the hospital as energy efficient as possible with the latest green technology available. Through the incorporation of various technologies such as heat recovery from HVAC systems, occupancy sensors on both lighting and cooling and ventilation systems, LED lighting and heat pumps, it has been calculated that Life Hilton Private Hospital will use 890 MWh less per year to run, than older hospitals. A photovoltaic system (solar power), using the sun as the power source, will make the hospital less dependent on the national power grid. The proposed photovoltaic system will contain an array of photovoltaic modules. These modules will generate direct current which will be converted to alternating current by means of intelligent power converters. No battery storage will be proposed in line with our green by design policy. The aim will be to significantly reduce the demand requirement and generate up to 450kva on the site. Architecturally, sun louvers and the positioning of areas that require maximum cooling on south facing areas has been incorporated into the design of the hospital as well as increased thermal insulation and various other efficient designs to further aid in reducing the energy demand of the building. The wellbeing of patients in the hospital will be enhanced, not only through attentive care, but also through the aesthetic tranquillity of the surrounds and natural light, throughout the facility, which is known to have healing properties.

A NEW DEVELOPMENT FROM LIFE HEALTHCARE

Development of the new Life Hilton Private Hospital in Kwazulu-Natal, is currently 25% complete and well on track to open in May 2015. The 94-bed, two storey hospital is being built with the latest green technology available and a strong focus on aesthetics and environmental friendly principles. Also under construction is a medical centre adjacent to the hospital, which will house a retail pharmacy and consulting rooms for doctors. Life Hilton Private Hospital will open its doors in May 2015 to provide world-class medical care to the vibrant community of the greater Pietermaritzburg region, including Hilton, Howick and the Midlands.

EMBERS of Padca have decided to take part in this year’s South African Care Forum Festival in Stellenbosch in October. They were so taken by the idea on the event posters of decorating trees and lampposts with brightly coloured scarves that they invited members to do the same in the Riverside Park Homes. “We spread the word and before we knew it, we had residents, family, staff and friends knittingandcrochetingbeautifultwo-metrestripsas requested,” said Lesley Birkett from Riverside Park Home. She said that the scarves were tied around the trees and lampposts. After the display all the strips will be worked together into blankets for needy older people. Padca has produced about 180 scarves so far with a few still to come. To appreciate all the effort and enthusiasm that went into this good cause the trees will remain decorated for two weeks after which the strips will be sent off to Stellenbosch for display. THE 2014 Zurura Schools Tour, an intergovernmental initiative, saw 25 pupils from three local schools visiting heritage sites in the Pietermaritzburg area for four days during the past week. The 25 pupils were selected from Laduma High, Willowfontein High and Silwanetshe Primary. The four-day tour started at the Old Prison where the teachers, pupils and the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association staff met. The tour included visits to the Manayi Hall, Heroes Acre, Peace Monument, David Cecil Oxford (DCO) Matiwane Museum, Qanda Rock,

tours around the Georgetown-Edendale area, Komkhulu, the Mandela Capture Site and the Howick Museum. Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA) marketing consultant Nqobile Majozi said the purpose is to enrich the knowledge of local pupils. “The main concept is to introduce local pupils to historic sites surrounding them. Either during history or tourism subjects, these pupils are taught about these historic attractions, but they have never seen them. “We invited seven schools to be part of the Zurura tour but we ended up with three. We have all these iconic attractions where people travel from international

countries to see them, but locals do not know about such places,” said Majozi. The Zurura School Tours are free. The KZN Department of Arts and Culture senior manager for museum services, Dolly Khumalo said the historic sites the pupils visited are the extension of the education pupils are taught in class. “The project keeps children out of mischief during school holidays. Tourism and heritage subjects compliment each other. “The tour helps young people to understand their past. We are planning to expand this project throughout the province, but that will depend on the availability of funds,” said Khumalo.

TECH TALK NETWORK Attached Storage: Nas for short. NAS drives are rather useful, and although they have been around for quite some time, they have recently gained a lot of popularity with home users. To explain a little more about the device, it is the same as an external hard drive, with the exception that you can plug it into your router or network switch and access it over your network connection as opposed to a USB cable. Depending on your router, this may be a slightly slower connection, however the benefits far outweigh that con. You can leave the Nas drive somewhere out of site, securing it against possible thieves etc., while still being able to copy data to and from it. All the computers at your house or small business can back up to the Nas drive without everyone having to carry a small drive around to each machine. One of the useful features found on some Nas enclosures is the ability to have two hard drive connected to your Nasand have them mirror each other. This is particularly useful in the case of small businesses that require foolproof backups. By mirroring the two drives, you will ensure that if one of the hard drives fail, you will still be able to access your data off the other drive, andsimplyaddanewdriveinsidetheenclosureanditwillautomatically duplicate the data to that drive.

The school plans to convert a section of the existing buildings into a school hall. “Weareexcitedaboutbeingableto cater for parents, pupils and the community once the hall has been built,” said principal Dina Moodley.
