Heaps of waste along Pietermaritz Street

NQOBILE MTOLO

T

HE dirt in Pietermaritzburg continues to pile up after waste management staff downed tools last week. Both residential areas and businesses have been equally affected by the rubbish that keeps piling up. The owner of Mshiniwami

Hardware shop along Pietermaritz Street, Mohammed Shaikh, said that the fact that employees had downed their tools should not affect service delivery since businesses pay rates. “This is a disgraceful way of running a town. They normally come here every day to collect litter but that has not happened since last week Wednesday. Why should we carry somebody else’s burden? The waste

has spilled on to the road and there is no parking for our trucks when off- loading goods,” said Shaikh. He said that he has phoned the waste management offices several times without any response, and urged the municipality to outsource the job to contractors who will clean the filthy streets. “The Msunduzi Municipality can never come right. They should get rid

of all the people who are working thereandemploynewpeoplewhoare willing to work. In South Africa, we do have a problem with local government,” added Shaikh. Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi saidtheemployeeswhohavedowned tools are doing so because of being uninformed about the outcome of the unfolding recruitment process. “Those are the employees who

were appointed as acting truck drivers and they feel that in the recruitmentprocessthatisunfolding, they will be overlooked. “As a result of that, they have downed tools. The recruitment process is not even complete. They [recruiting officials] have not appointed people but the process is unfolding. “I have not been informed that there is a sit-in but what I am aware of is that they have downed tools. Because of this, certain areas were not serviced on Tuesday and Wednesday. What we are doing as the municipality is trying to find replacements so that the people can get the service that they deserve,” said Nkosi. Msunduzi spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha apologised to residents who have been affected in the process. “The Msunduzi Municipality would like to apologise to the community of Pietermaritzburg for the waste that has not been collected. We are currently experiencing some challenges with our staff, but they are being resolved by management. “We are aware of the inconveniences caused and as of tomorrow, there will be staff available to clear out the backlog on the streets. We would also like the community to please be considerate and be patient with us under the circumstances,” she said.

P

EOPLE came out in numbers to be part of the Gandhi Peace Walk this past Sunday, held to commemorate struggle icon Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence approach and his 145th birthday anniversary. Gandhi Memorial Committee deputy chairperson David Gengan said that the march drew just more than 800 people from different parts of Pietermaritzburg. “We were very pleased with the turnout on Sunday. The march keeps growing every year. This year was special because we are also commemorating 20 years of democracy. We have come a long way as a country. We are now a country that is moving towards togetherness,” said Gengan. The march was hosted by the Gandhi Memorial Committee, in partnership with the Msunduzi Municipality. Guest speakers included Msunduzi speaker Babu Baijoo, Ela Gandhi who is the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi and the ConsulGeneral of India, Rajagopalan Raghunathan.

The march commemorates struggle icon Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology of truth (Satyagraha), non-violence (Ahimsa) and love & peace (Sarvodaya). On 7 June, 1893 Gandhi was thrown off a train at the Pietermaritzburg Railway Station after he refused to move from the whites-only train compartment. In 1993, Gandhi’s statue, which is along Church Street, was officially unveiled by the late former President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu to mark the centenary of the event at the Pietermaritzburg airport. “The Gandhi Memorial Committee was formed in 1989 and every year we mark this occasion with a peace walk. We not only celebrate his life but we enlighten people about his philosophy.WiththeissuesaffectingAfricaand the Middle East, violence is not the only means to solve things. It is pointless to commemorate Gandhi's ideologies if they do not change how we think and how we behave. We must be the change we want to see in the world for a better future for our children,” said Gengan For more pictures from the event, visit www.pmbfever.co.za.

Bhengu ecstatic at Exco members gesture NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za EXECUTIVE Committee (Exco) member, and National Freedom Party (NFP) member Ntokozo Bhengu, is happy that his fellow Exco members have shown him respect at the recent Exco meeting now that he is a sangoma. Before the start of the meeting, Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela and other members showered Bhengu with silver coins, which is part of the tradition. Bhengu said that he completed his sangoma training, called ukuthwasa, last month. “It might look like a joke to others but to me as a traditionalist, it was an honour. They were not doing this to me but they were showing respect to my ancestors. I did not choose to be a sangoma but I was called by my ancestors to it. The call to be a sangoma started when I was

in fact 11-years-old. “I realized that I must accept this and move forward. I have been in training for two years. I completed my training last month. I will continue to work as a councillor. I have requested my ancestors that they allow me to continue my work as a councillor. For now it seems as iftheyhaveacceptedmyrequestbecauseifthey did not, something bad would have happened. You just need to accept it, deal with it and live your life. There is no other way,” said Bhengu. Ndlela said, “I am not very well schooled but I am aware that there is something called ukukhunga where you give people money as a gesture to place support for their work to prosper. Traditionally, when you meet the person for the first time when they come back from ukuthwasa, that is what people do. When we talk diversity, in our municipality we have a diverse number of cultural beliefs.”

A zebra on Townhill stopped traffic as he sauntered onto the N3 highway on Monday morning. Oblivious to the commotion he was causing, the young zebra stallion casually walked up Townhill’s southbound carriageway as cars weaved around him, while others actually stopped to watch the animal. Staff from Monzali Estate assisted in leading the animal to the estate on the opposite side of the road. Speculation was that the zebra came from the Queen Elizabeth Park. PHOTO: JONATHAN BURTON

Proud to be a PMB citizen IT is strange how quick we are to complain about anything, especially when it is related to our municipali ty or town council, and even more so when it is something that effects our hurried life and busy existence. So many times I have heard or read about complaintsaboutpotholes, waterwastage, trafficjams and so on. The first thing we question when we are not happy about issues in the city is: “What is the town council going to do about this?” Well to all those skeptics and moaners, of which I am one most of the time, I would like to say, it is about timethatwesaywelldoneandthankyoutoourmunici pality and local authorities for a job well done. I refer specifically to the flow of traffic through our city centre during the morning and afternoon peak hour traffic. I work in the city centre and up to a month or so ago, the peak hour traffic was a nightmare, with frustrating gridlocks at every second crossing and motorists doing just what they felt like. The decision to manage these intersections daily during peak hours has made a huge difference, and it is a breeze driving through town now. Thank you to whomever is involved in this initiative, as it not only makes our lives more comfortable, but also sends the rightpositivemessagetoanyvisitorstravellingthrough. Apart from resolving the issues with regard to the traffic issues, we have to acknowledge that the “Pieter maritzburg Clean up Campaign” have also made a huge difference, and is already showing a new face of our city. Withthenewvisitorsinfocentreandanowbeautiful Publicity House, I am proud to be a citizen of this city again. Let’s keep our city clean and support our town council and if need be, impose very strict fines on littering. ANDRE KOCK Via email

ENTION Hajj and you are likelytohearasoulfulstory. Hajj has been described as the experience of a lifetime, a journey of the soul, a hair raising experience, a potent reminder of the day of judgement and an unparalleled display of unity and equality before Allah. Hajj is the sum of all of these descriptions and more. As the fifth pillar of Islam, Hajj is a must for those faithful who are physically and financially able to make the journey. Over the years, thenumericalriseoftheHujjaj(Pilorims) has been phenomenal. From the hundred thousand plus who performed Hajj with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) in 10 A.H, we have some 2.5 million doing so today. The number would be 10 times more if the Saudi government had not enforced a pilgrim quota for Muslim countries due to logistical reasons. Speaking of the soulfulness of Hajj, the year that the prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) performed pilgrimage, a companion fell from his camel which accidentally stomped on him, breaking his neck. The companion died of his injuries. The prophet (S.A.W) said “bathe his body with water and Lotus tree leaves and bury him with camphor for verily he will be returned to Allah on the day of resurrection in the state of talbiyah (Bukhari Muslim). compared to the day of judgment when everyone will be present. Hajj also reminds us that id the travel is difficult and requires a lot of preparation and provision, what is it that we have prepared for that final journey? No matter the amount of money and preparation we make for Hajj, it is the sincere and the intention that counts the most. During Hajj, we should concentrate on the rituals, overlook the mistakes of others, and seek Allah’s forgiveness. A simple reflection while standing in Arafah can become an atoning experience. Upon return from Hajj, we should avoid dwelling on the negative. A tranquil and forgiving heart and upright actions would be good signs, Insha Allah, that the Hajj was accepted.

Ancient journey in modern times results from purity of intention and adherence to Allahs commands, some of us come from the Hajj feeling an inner tranquillity, some feeling uneasy that they were not always patient during the Pilgrimage, others expressing unhappiness at not having received the promised comfort from their tour operator. Today, most passengers fly in comfortable jetliners, where they are served with lavish amounts of food, beverages and snacks. They are then transported in air conditioned buses and housed in cosy hotels that are within walking distance from the Haram. What is the purpose of Hajj? Is it to test our physical endurance, financial sacrifice or to show us theequalityoftheMuslimUmmah before Allah. During the Hajj, we do become engrossed in our own affairs to the extent of being selfish, although only a tiny fraction of humanity is gathered there

City ready to host first children’s summit

NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

T

HE Msunduzi Innovation and Development Institute (Midi) is ready for tomorrow’s first children’s summit which will be held at the City Hall from 9am to 1pm. Midi director Robert Fincham said that a number of issues affecting children in PMB will be discussed to find amicable solutions. “The purpose of the children’s summit is for long-term goals as we are working in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). What we want to do is to establish Pietermaritzburg as the first childfriendly city in Africa,” said

Fincham. He said that about 50 children representing different parts of the city will be attending the summit. He said that the event will be attended by Unicef representatives as well. “We are very excited and have brilliant staff members who have undertaken different tasks to ensure that tomorrow is a success. I am delightedwithwhattheyhaveachievedandIam confident that everything will go according to plan,” said Fincham. He said that interviews have been conducted with more than 500 children in all the 37 municipal wards with the help of ward committee members to gather information about issues affecting local children. “Over the last couple of years, our research team has worked with ward committees that

deal with children to discuss what is happening in their wards. Unicef uses the survey to identify issues that are critical in their cities,” he said. The Children’s Summit will be based on the nine Unicef building blocks for developing a child friendly city, which are to encourage children’s participation, making children’s rights known, establish a child-friendly legal framework, have a city-wide children’s rights strategy, establish a children’s rights unit or coordinating mechanism, enforce child impact assessment and evaluation, for authorities to have a children’s budget, have a regular state of the city’s children’s report and maintain independent advocacy for children. TECH TALK

WHAT happened to Windows 9? Microsoft skips Windows 9 and goes straight to Windows 10. Microsoft wants to make Windows 10 a killer operating system for all of those disaffected mouse-and-keyboard users - both normal Desktop users like you and I, and also the big enterprise customers who were rather displeased with Windows 8 s Metro interface. Windows 10 will be a converged platform across all devices “from Windows Phone to Azure.” It will still be compatible with previous devices, programs and apps, as the event content focuses heavily on the enterprise capabilities of the next edition. As expected, the Start Menu returns, including resizable and customizable live tiles and a new universal search feature that finds apps, programs and web searches in a single box. Many of the features of Windows 7 were played up as being present and correct, but now the blend between the modern and desktop interfaces is fully realized to avoid the ‘tacked on’ and ‘non-mouse friendly’ feel of Windows 8. A new task view feature on the taskbar allows for quick switching between the multiple desktops that are also now included. A “snap assist” feature will allow users to grab items from multiple desktops and bring them totheactiveone.Poweruserswilllovethefactthatthecommandprompt will now respond to keyboard shortcuts - copying and pasting. Release date for Windows 10, will most likely to be in the fourth quarter of 2015. For this and other interesting articles visit us and like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/computerworldkzn

This term, the Grade 4 boys at Cordwalles Preparatory School, adorned in Parklane Spar aprons and chefs hats, and armed with sharp knives, whisks and chopping boards, put their cooking and teamwork skills to the test with moms and dads assisting where they could. Parklane Spar kindly donated all their ‘mystery’ ingredients and these were only revealed once the teachers shouted, “Ready, Steady, Cook!” There was much excitement as the packets were opened and the menu was decided a main course and a dessert within 50 minutes. Meals ranged from stir fry to kebabs to stuffed chicken fillets. For some boys, it was their first time to use some of the kitchen utensils. The best part of the evening was watching the boys enjoy a very special dinner with their parents. Brett Cullis (R) is pictured giving a helping hand to (from left) Thomas Cullis, Njabulo Gumedi and Mvelo Guma.

Several Grade 8s and teachers from The Wykeham Collegiate went to the Pietermaritz burg SPCA to drop off a food donation and to volunteer for the morning. They cleaned out the chicken coops and rabbit hutches and washed some of the dogs. They also spent time playing with the puppies and walking a few of the older dogs. To round off the morning, they picked up litter after the Saturday morning market and enjoyed time with the kittens. Driving ‘Dakar dirty’ W

HEN it comes to surviving everything that the roughest terrain can put in your way there’s no motorsport event to match the Dakar Rally every January through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. The Toyota Dakar team, builds its competing Hilux vehicles using mostly local components. As much as 80% of each vehicle is manufactured in a specialist workshop in Kyalami, Johannesburg, by a team of local petrolheads who eat, breathe and sleep their dream of winning the world’s toughest event. The team fields two Hiluxes each year with South African drivers Giniel de Villiers and Leeroy Poulter at the wheel and guided by, respectively, by Dirk von Zitzewitz and Rob Howie. De Villiers has reached the Dakar podium three times — he won in 2009, second in 2013, third in 2011 - and has been the team’s lead driver since 2012, putting the South African flag firmly in the global spotlight. The customised Hiluxes have been designed in South Africa by South African engineers, in compliance with the strict rules set out by the Dakar Rally organisers. Toyota Motorsport SA team principal Glyn Hall said: “Even though we have generous sponsors, the South Africanteamiscompetingwithitsbudgetinrands, against international teams that have millions of U.S. dollars or

euros behind them. Hall emphasises that conditions on the Dakar are extreme, each driver/navigator team being confined in a small space that goes up to 50°C in the South American desert heat, with each of them consuming up to seven litres of fluids a day – and still running the risk of dehydration. The logistics supporting the team are tremendous, says Toyota, with the team travelling with nearly nine tonnes of spare parts, tools and equipment to support the two race Hiluxes, which are packed into 78 containers for transport from Kyalami to the start of the event – and then to each stopover during the two-week race. Furthermore, theteamtakesitsownwatertotheevent, makes its own ice, and sterilises all the racers’ equipment every night. “Navigators only get the next day’s route the night before each stage and teams could still have to drive 400km to get to the start. There’s one rest day for the drivers but the mechanics and crew are working 24/7 for the duration of the event. The Dakar truly is a remarkable test of man and machine.” The next Dakar Rally will run from January 4-17. 2015. Visit the Dakar website for more information. — Supplied.

delivered every Wednesday to homes around Pietermaritzburg. The C4 Picasso. THE C4 Picasso was launched in South Africa in June and is available in two derivatives Seduction and Intensive. The car is powered by a 1.6 e-HDi 115 turbodiesel good for 85kW/270Nm and it’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. It reaches 100km/h in 11.8sec and has a claimed top speed of 190km/h. The biggest highlight about this car is probably its self-parking function. You select the auto-park function and drive slowly-lessthan20km/h–asthecarscansand measures a suitable parking space. Once it does, select the direction to park from i.e. by indicating left or right or into a parallel bay, select reverse and the car will steer itself into the selected bay automatically. You have to drive slow and if you reach the end of the car park, the camera stops scanning for a suitable bay and you have to reverse or drive around again and start all over however, the car might stall and then you have to start the whole process all over. Citroën claims a combined fuel consumption of four litres/100km. It’s safe to say this car daintily sips fuel rather than guzzles it. It averages about 6.3-litres/100km on the open road or 16.8km/litre on urban and rural roads.

The space in this car rates top-notch. The rear row is spacious and comfortable with trays that can flip down for the kiddies or for passengers to keep items such as cellphones or even use as desk space to work on. Both front seats have massage functions. The C4 Picasso’s facia is clutter-free and the two monitors displays all the controls re: air-conditioning, car and audio settings. There’sevenacalculatorandfullcalendarand you can upload personal photos and set it as desktop wallpaper. For driver and front passenger, the driver seat can’t go much lower and the steering wheel should be built so that it can reach further back into the dash. The Seduction version will set you back R325 900. It comes with a three-year or 100 000km warranty, five-year or 100 000km service plan, three years of 24-hour roadside assistance while the warranty can be extended to five-years or 100 000km. There’s also an optional Citroën Freedrive plan - a five-year or 100 00km warranty and a five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan. The pupils, accompanied by school staff, hiked, mountain biked and relay-ran over 100 km in the midlands area to achieve their goal. This involved camping out, carrying back packs with food supplies for two and a half days, andtrailrunningthroughforests and on dirt roads. Starting in Craigieburn, their journey meandered through the Karkloof area and Hilton, descended down World’s View and ended up at Epworth School in Scottsville. MIDST any frustrations of living in the KZN capital, there are rays of light that remind you of the charm only Pietermaritzburg can truly capture. The Oppenheimer Cricket Week hosted by Maritzburg College in the Michaelmas holidays, and in its 55th year, saw 36 matches played in and around the city over the last four days amidst the beauty of the 151-year-old school, the picturesque Maritzburg Oval as well as other lovely grounds in PMB and Eston and Richmond.
