Organisation denies ‘FIRING’ volunteers >> Sakhumnotho was sanctioned to clean parts of the city NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

A

LOCAL non-profit organization responsible for undertaking the Msunduzi clean-up campaign programme in some parts of the CBD has dismissed claims that it allegedly expelled some of its volunteers because of lack of funding. Two former volunteers from Sakhumnotho Development Services told the Maritzburg Fever that after working for the organization for months as volunteers, earning a monthly stipend of R1500, they have been given the boot. Both former volunteers spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization. They both started working as volunteers last year. “We were told that we could not continue working there because they could not afford to pay us. One of the managers said that the Msunduzi Municipality had not paid them the administration fee and for that, they could not pay us. Sakhumnotho is basically blaming the municipality for what has happened. “Sakhumnotho is supposed to develop the youth and not destroy them,” said the former volunteer. Department of Public Works spokesperson Mbulelo Baloyi said that the memorandum of agreement between the three parties started in April 2013 and was terminated on 31 March 2014. Baloyi said that the responsibility of the Department of Public Works was to pay the stipends of the beneficiaries for the duration of the contract period. Baloyi said that the contract has been renewed with the beneficiaries in this financial year, however he said that the supplied budget will only sustain all the 25 beneficiaries for a period of six months. “The department was not aware that there werebeneficiarieswhohadbeenexpelledfrom the programme as we committed to sustain all 25 for the next six months of this financial year. We were only made aware that Sakhumnotho was failing to get hold of four beneficiaries, as the contracts that were signed this year totalled 21. “To date, we have only 21 beneficiaries who are currently on site and have commenced the work. We were aware that Sakhumnotho is liaising with the ward councillors of those four beneficiaries to try and locate them. Once

confirmation has been received from their respective ward councillors that they have exited the programme, then the process of sourcing replacements will commence,” explained Baloyi. He said that the department has engaged with Sakhumnotho regarding this inquiry and they have confirmed that no beneficiary was expelled from the programme. The founder of Sakhumnotho Development Services, Thokozani Gcaba, dismissed claims made by the two volunteers saying that Sakhumnotho has never fired anyone. He said that those who have left Sakhumnotho had found greener pastures. However, he said that he had told some of the volunteers to stay at home until they received adequate funding. “This has nothing to do with the municipality. They were not expelled from Sakhumnotho. Currently, we are short staffed by four volunteers,” said Gcaba. Msunduzi’s deputy municipal manager for community services, Boniwe Zulu, said that Sakhumnotho was sanctioned to clean parts of the city and confirmed that the volunteer stipends were paid out by the Department of Works. She said that the municipality is not responsible for the allegedly sacked volunteers, adding that Sakhumnotho is responsible for the hiring process of volunteers. “Our partnership with the organization is to clean the city and for that we pay them an administration fee to cover the costs of running the organization on a month-to-month basis,” she said.

Call for parties to remove posters NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

THE Msunduzi Municipality is pushing for all political parties to take down their election posters by this Friday. The general elections were in May this year. At the recent Executive Committee (Exco) meeting, mayor Chris Ndlela said that the municipality will not prosecute political parties but will instead resort to an “ubuntu” agreement by offering them the rest of this week as an amnesty period. Deputy municipal manager, Dr Ray Ngcobo, said that come end of this week, the municipality will take down the posters and be forced to send bills to all political parties that did not comply with the regulation.

THE recent internal audit results for the Msunduzi Municipality call centre show that the centre is in a shambles. The findings reveal that customer complaints are not formally recorded and followed up, call centre operators do not always interpret and direct calls correctly resulting in delays and that the depot clerks do not promptly assign faults logged to the technicians. The functionality of the call centre is also not well understood by the depot clerks. These are some of the 11 findings for the call centre which were highlighted during the recent Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) meeting held at the city hall. Faults logged at the call centre are not resolved within stipulated time-frames and the database of attended queries is not up to scratch. Moreover, call centre agents do not always correctly interpret calls and information from the customers. The report states that the staff shortage at the electricity department delays the attendance of other faults logged at the call centre. The audit on the call centre operations and management states that the call centre lacks proper management and that the system operators are in need of training to effectively and efficiently carry out their duties. Between August 2011 and April 2012, a total of 12283 faults logged at the call centre were not resolved within a reasonable time. “With all the issues that the public have, be it account queries or electricity failures, whenever they try to get through to us they first call the call centre. “When they come across a problem and they do not get a proper reply from the call centre, that is when the frustration sets in,” said committee member Roger Ashe. Mpac chairperson Mike Tarr said that the callcentreisthebackboneofcustomerservice and service delivery and its challenges need to be met head-on. “It is an important report and as a committee, we must get feedback on the implementation of this particular report,” he said.

HERE has been a spree of thefts at various museums in the city, resulting in precious historical items being stolen. The Msunduzi Museum in Pietermaritzburg recently discovered that two precious items had been stolen from the museum premises - a leopard skin which was on loan from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and an historical gold medal which has been part of the Museum collection since 1912. The medal was part of three others manufactured of different metals. They were specially manufactured by jeweller J Sullivan, in commemoration of the historical event which took place on 16 December, 1838 between the Voortrekkers and amaZulu, and for the opening of what was then known as the Voortrekker Museum, 102 years ago.

“The thief or thieves came in broad daylight, cleverly entered the locked display cases and closed them up again, moving items inside the cases so one didn’t notice that anything was amiss,” said Elrica Henning, head of research, information and collections at the museum.

This is not the first time a theft has occurred at the museum. Earlier this year, a metal part of the 1824 year old ox wagon, exhibited in the E.G. Jansen extension, was stolen. “I don’t know what it could be used for or the monetary value,” said Henning.

The wagon is said to be one of the oldest in South Africa and one that was, in all likelihood, used by the Voortrekkers themselves. A break-in was also reported at Macrorie House recently, and rare coins and antique gold watches worth more than R200 000 were stolen while other valuables left untouched. “Our entire coin collection was targeted, along with a gold coin caseandtwogoldpocketwatches,” said museum curator, Roxanne Thomas. She believes the theft was conducted by private coin collectors to be sold or used for a private collection. Another theft that took place at the beginning of the year was the four Ormolu angels which were stolen from the Tatham Art Gallery (TAG). The angels are part of the Ormolu clock which is one of TAG’s most prized possessions and one of the pieces that attracted the most visitors and international tourists in particular. A case has been opened at the Loop Street Police Station. Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Elrica Henning at 033 394 6834 or email eolivier@msunduzimuseum.org.za

OTLANDS recently launched its fundraising project called Education for Education Cotlands Tin Project at the Maritzburg Christian School (MCS). Cotlands is a non-profit organisation which offers integrated early childhood development programmes aimed at providing care, support and development opportunities to vulnerable young children and their families. Cotlands was established in 1937. Priscilla Walters, who is the Cotlands coordinator for the tin project, said that the project was established in 1990. “It was a dream of mine to coordinate the tin project into schools and there is no better time than now with the buzz-word in the country being ‘education’. MCS is the first school I had approached. They took the offer with both hands and I think the school has enjoyed it. “I have approached a number of schools in the KZN province and my mission is to fill next year’s calendar with tin project events at different schools. “Children do need to be taught that we need to give back and this is a nice gentle way of letting them

She said that Cotlands used to care for unmarried mothers and their babies and they have consequently evolved to cater for the needs of abused and abandoned children and eventually, HIV positive children. “As the years have gone by, the toy libraries project was implemented. The aim of this project is to provide children with educational toys,” added Walters. Principal of MCS, Eugene Burger said that the school is very excited to be part of a project that

will impact on young people. “The school is about children learning, growing and our motto is establishing firm foundations. We recognize in Cotlands their mission to establish good foundations in young people’s lives, especially children who are disadvantaged. “What a privilege for us to be part of that and to make a small difference in other people’s lives. Children need to be taught how to give and for us as a school, we believe that it is better to give than to receive.

“We want to teach our children the foundations of giving and blessing others,” said Burger. MCS head boy Michael Pretorius said that the project will be very effective. “I really think that it is important that we give small amounts and together, we can make a big difference for those who are less privileged than us,” he said. FTER a two year period of uncertainty about its future, Tembaletu Trust has moved into new premises at 5 Hartford Road, Pentrich. Maritzburg Fever reported that the non-governmental organization would possiblyhavetoshutitsdoorsattheiroldoffices in Burger Street after receiving a notice of the termination of their 25 year lease with the Department of Public Works. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Tembaletu Trust director Richard Rangiah said that they had fought until the end to keep their old building in town, however lost the battle with the department. He said the pricing of rental to remain in the centre of town was not feasible for the Trust. “Although the area isn’t as central as it was, the current area fits into our budget and offers us space to expand our services to match the needs of the community.” Rangiah said that the one disappointment for them was the fact that the smaller organizations that operated inthesamepremises as the Trust were not able to move with them, as the new location would not house all of them. “Unfortunately the educational park which we had built over a number of years with other

organizations had to come to an end, but they have all found alternate premises,” he said. ThechallengefortheTrustistonowrespond to their new environment and reconceptualise their services and training programmes to meet the needs of the people in the area. “Yes we are adapting to the area but for the most part, staff are happy about the new location and I think that this was a good result in the end. We have been able to retain all our staff and programmes and have the possibility to expand,” said Rangiah. He emphasized that walk-ins are still welcome.

HE National Groen Sebenza (Green Work) programme began in May 2014, with 800 young graduates and matriculants with an interest in and passion for the environment being selected from predominantly rural parts of South Africa. The Groen Sebenza programme, funded by the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA), is coordinated by the South African Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). The two and a half year programme sees the young ‘pioneers’ placed with various host organisations, like Wildlands Conservation Trust, which provides them with skills and experience that will lead to environmental career opportunities. ECONDS after Grade 11 pupil from St John Paul II High School, Nomusa Shelembe, was announced the first winner of the PMB leg of the KZN Premier Spelling Bee competition, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. “I am so excited and I was not expecting to win. I have been studying the

words since schools closed for the June holidays. From this competition, I have learned new words and I have gained great confidence,” said Shelembe in complete shock, with tears of joy streaming down her face. St John Paul School is in Elandskop, 45 minutes outside of Pietermaritzburg. The Pietermaritzburg KZN Premier Spelling Bee competition was held this past Saturday at the Eastwood community hall. There were a total of 69 entries received, and 37 schools which participated. As soon as Shelembe was announced the winner, correctlyspellingthewordthatrunner-uppupilMzolisi Zulu from Fundokuhle Secondary School had spelt incorrectly, Shelembe’s teachers Thembelani Zuma and Nokuphila Ndlovu ran on stage to congratulate her. “We are very excited and so proud of the two pupils who represented our school. The fact that one of our pupilswonisacherryontop.Itwasagreatcompetition but challenging. It gave our children great exposure as to what they can expect next year,” said Zuma. Shelembe won a R6000 cash prize, a trophy and certificate, a box of books, a Gem voucher, a Spar voucher as well as Comrades Marathon goodies. Her school won books. Runner-up

Mzolisi Zulu won a R3000 cash prize, a medal and certificate, a box of books, a Gem voucher, a Spar voucher and Comrades goodies. His school won a box of school books. His English teacher, Bukiswa Mamane, won a Spar voucher and R1000 cash prize. Third place went to Andiswa Hlengwa from Fundokuhle Secondary School. The top five contestants were automatically entered into a bonus round, where the five pupils not only had to spell a word correctly, but they also had to give the correct definition of the word. Cool, calm and collected, Siphesihle Cele from Siqongweni High School, won the bonus round. For the bonus round, Cele took home a R5000 cash prize, a medal and a certificate. The runner-up for the bonus round, Hlengwa, won a R1000 cash prize, a medal and a certificate. Shelembe took the third place spotforthisround,andwonaR500cashprize,amedal and a certificate. Pietermaritzburg’s KZN Premier Spelling Bee second and third place contestants Andiswa Hlengwa (L) and Mzolisi Zulu.

Earlier that day, not even the chilly morning winds could stop the participants from being excited about the competition. The participants, dressed in their respective school uniforms, basked in the sun while they went over the challenging words one last time, minutes before the competition started. Emcee for the day, Celeste Hadlow, helped release the stress by encouraging everyone to stand up and dance. Judges for the day were Maritzburg Fever and Echo local community titles editor Bridget Siebert, Eastwood Secondary School teacher Barbra Saul and general manager for Media24 Local Newspapers (KZN) Neil Tapinos. “As expected, the Pietermaritzburg leg of the KZN Premier Spelling Bee did not disappoint and we are grateful to our partners for helping to make the day a success. Pupils in this part of KZN exude confidence and they had obviously swatted hard for the competition,” said Tapinos. Maritzburg Fever, Echo Edendale and Maritzburg Echo would like to thank all its sponsors - Via Afrika, Spar, Rotary International, Gem Schoolwear, Comrades and Msunduzi Museum - for a successful event. Clivia.

S the spring season arrives, there is a new awakening in every life form, from animals to plants. It’s the beginning of a whole new growth cycle. Gardeners get excited and get back to planting new crops and flowers in anticipation of the spring rains. This year, spring promises to be filled with a bounty of flowers, blossoms and blooms after a prolonged dry autumn and winter season. There are many plants that are symbolic of the arrival of spring. The local indigenous Clivia has become an icon of the spring garden and this year

promises to be a special time for Clivia’s. The International Clivia Conference is to be held in Pietermaritzburg during September. However plants are bursting forth into bloom right now. One of the few very striking flowering plants that grow in shaded growing conditions, Clivia’s have been hybridised extensively. This has given rise to numerous different colour and flower variations that are now becoming more accessible to gardeners. Other plants that make spring so spectacular include Azaleas, Bougainvilleas and flowering blossoms. Pietermaritzburg was famous for the azaleas growing in and around the city. Many still flourish and burst into full bloom when conditions suite the plants. Bougainvilleas withstand dry conditions and enjoy periods of little or no rainfall. This encourages the formation of extra flower buds and ensures an overabundance of spring colour. Remember that all bougainvillea flowers are cream in colour. It’s the

bracts (modified leaves) that surround the small tubularflowersthatappearinanarrayofbrightcolours. Small blossom trees like flowering peaches, apples and cherries always add a special allure to the spring garden. Look out for these lovely plants in the next six weeks, especially in the colder regions. Springheraldsachangeinplantingpatterns, with a whole array of summer and autumn flowers and vegetables coming into season. Seeds and seedlings of these wonderful garden gems need to be planted when all dangers of winter frost and cold are over. Just some of the vegetables to plant out this spring season - sweetcorn, maize, tomato, pepper, pumpkin, squash, marrow, egg plant. Flowers include – Begonia, Marigold, Impatiens, Browallia, Torenia - the list is seemingly endless. Visit your nursery or garden centre to see what’s tempting this spring season, it’s arrived at last. - Supplied by Blackwoods Home of Gardening. Contact them at 033 342 2191.

Grace College celebrated Founders’ Day on 26 July. The day was packed with exciting activities, starting with an assembly. Guest speaker, The Reverend Colin Bishop, inspired the audience, and in particular the pupils, with his talk on ‘being the solution to the problem’. The assembly was followed by an inter-house soccer festival. A Founders’ dinner dance took place later in the evening. The guests were treated to the wit of MC, James Cuenod, and a three course meal and live music by the band, Los Locos. Many lucky draw prizes were won and the school is grateful to the sponsors for the generous donation of prizes. To end the evening, the guests took to the dance floor to music provided by DJ Aiden Kobus. TECH TALK

IN the previous week, we looked at online storage and the benefits of using cloud storage. Following that article, we have had a few inquiries regarding online storage usage in a business model. It is worth mentioning that the rules change slightly in this regard. Business based IT needs to focus on more than just reliability, it also needs to focus on performance. The basic cloud storage mentioned in last week’s article may be useful for basic document storage, but if you are looking at backing up your business’s entire database, you will need to consider a few other options. Keeping in mind, that if there is an emergency, your data will need to be re-downloaded from your cloud storage provider. There are a few companies that have made arrangements to have your data delivered to you on a separate hard drive in the event of system failures, as well as companies that keep a local copy onsite at your premises as well as online. The key features to consider when looking at cloud storage in your company is as follows: 1. Exactly how much data do you need to backup, and what are your limitations? 2. In the event of system failure, how quickly can your data reach your company? 3. Once the data has arrived, how easy is it to restore the backup? 4. And lastly, how secure is your data whilst it is offsite?

The Maserati Alfieri concept recently made its debut as the marque celebrated its centenary.

A birthday party worth of a century MASERATI brought its past, present and future to life in celebrating the marque’s 100th birthday at the Monterey Car Week in California recently. As the featured marque at Pebble Beach’s Concours d’Elegance, the celebration was stylish, reminding petrol-heads of the same event in 1968, when a Maserati Mistral Coupé took top honours as best of show. Coming back to the present, the lawn at this Concours d’Elegance was packed with examples of Maserati’s rich history, including — in the Maserati Centennial Racing Class — a 1954 A6GCS Spyder, a 1955 Maserati 250F Monoposto, and a 1956 Maserati 300S Fantuzzi Spyer. The 1954 A6GCS took the trophy for best gran turismo, noted for its artistic beauty and high level of performance.

One of the most fascinating cars of all time, designed by Pininfarina in 1954, the A6GCS proved a valuable source of inspiration for the designers of today’s Alfieri concept. This highly acclaimed concept made its North American debut during a special centennial celebration at the Mazda Raceway during the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion, where Maserati was also the honoured marque. Lorenzo Ramacioitti, head of Fiat Chrysler Automobile Global Design, presented the stunning concept, saying “this car has a racing breed, but with a kick of poetry. The new Alfieri also made a star turn on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It was a birthday party worthy of a century.

‘Midnite’ is the new black A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is sailing in... ...don’t miss the boat. www.pmbfever.co.za MORE than 20 000 of the sixth generation Isuzu KB have been sold since the vehicle’s launch in March last year. Following on the success of this model, Isuzu now offers a more exclusive variant - the Midnite Edition KB 300 double cab - with only 500 units being produced. “The new addition continues Isuzu’s heritage of special models in South Africa. Limited edition vehicles are part of Isuzu’s DNA in our country, and the new Midnite Edition has the looks and appeal to attract attention on the road and set its owners apart from the rest,” said Mlungisi Nonkonyana, brand manager for General Motors South Africa. “Special design and engineering development by our local team has resulted in a truly desirable bakkie, built just for South Africans, and with limited production of 500 units we expect our passionate followers to receive it enthusiastically.” Painted exclusively in red, white or metallic silver, the exterior of the Midnite Edition is enhanced by a classic black theme from bumper to bumper. At the front, a specialised black bumper guard adds larger-than-life attitude and is complemented by a black radiator grille.

The classic black treatment continues on the flanks with black mirror caps, roof-rails, side-steps, window-surrounds and black 17inch alloy wheels, while at the rear a standard tow bar sits beneath a black rear bumper. The special design changes are finished off by a black sports-bar behind the cab, complete with special decals and branded door sill plates. Each vehicle receives a special plaque with the unit’s unique number engraved on it, indicating which of the 500 special edition units it is. The interior is further distinguished by special Midnite Edition carpets. Three Midnite Edition models are available, each of which is powered by Isuzu’s proven 3.0-litre D-TEQ diesel engine with 130kW and 380Nm on tap. Customers can choose between a five-speed manual, a fivespeed automatic transmission with a 4x2 drivetrain, or 4x4 with a manual gearbox only. As with the rest of the Isuzu KB range, this model carries a five-year/120 000km warranty and a five-year/90 000km service plan, with service intervals scheduled every 15 000km. JONATHAN COOK

A priceless childhood

A

PIETERMARITZBURG sporting life. What to talk about, so many options, so many memories. Back in the seventies the KZN capital presented a smorgasbord of options for a little boy who, along with friends and family, took to sport like Chad le Clos to water. So many memories: a phantom weightlifter with the lovely name, Pietermaritzburg’s Precious McKenzie, a man I never saw in the fleshbutreadabout, whohadtomake his career in New Zealand due to the constraintsofapartheid-andwenton to win a Commonwealth Games medal. Watching silky footballers Ravi Shastri - the surname is spot-on (if memory serves me correctly) and deadly goalscorer Bomber Chamane of Northdale club Real Taj, which was owned by hotelier and community leader the legendary Pops Chetty, father of current DA MP in KZN - and voice of conscience, Mergan Chetty. centrebackandcaptainMike“Horse” James (one of this particular Maritzburg institution’s many nicknames); the way left back Dave Loveridge, socks around his ankles, used to sprint onto the park alone as his team-mates strolled out of the stadium tunnel; get-out-of-my-way sharpshooter Bobby Chalmers

stroking his silky passes around the park - and controversial MFC chairman Mitch Mendonides, whose tussles with glamorous Durban City owner Norman Elliott spiced things up in the KZN derbies. Watching Mike James’s younger brother - centre forward Buddy James, socks always down around

whosethunderousshotsatgoalatJan Smuts Stadium (now Harry Gwala) reminded me of my Tiger comic hero “Hot Shot Hamish,” he of the thickest, most muscular thighs you could ever imagine. Bobby wasn’t far off in the big legs business. Classy midfielder Alan Varner, who never seemed to raise a sweat -

his ankles - who had an uncanny radar that produced many memorable goals out of nothing. My recollection of second or third cousin Rodney Anley (I’m going to claim him no matter how far removed we are!) scoring a goal on Shamrocks debut while still in matric at Maritzburg College. Scanning the then Natal Witness anxiously to see whether MFC or Shamrocks had a home game on Sunday afternoon, knowing it was guaranteed that Dad and my two brothers would be with me on the grass banks, cheering MFC or Shamrocks on against all-comers, especially the toffee-nosed Cape Town City and Highlands Park of Jo’burg, who always thought they were a cut above the rest. The packed open stand of Indians, massive MFC supporters, who had to sit in a segregated area because of Apartheid - what an absurdity when you think of it. So many magical memories that forged a lifelong love affair for sport in a little boy. Part 2 will appear in the Fever next week.
