Y Tuesday afternoon, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) could not say if the current strike in the steel industry will end this week. “We do not know what the agreement outcomes will be and when they will be sorted out between the union and the employer bodies,” said KZN Numsa regional secretary Mbuso Ngubane. Ngubane said on Monday, the union met with the employer bodies to seek clarity on issues pertaining to the demands of the workers. “We are exhausting all our negotiation skills. If the strike is prolonged, it will have a detrimental effect not only on employees, but also on a number of companies in the steel industry.Thisjustputspressureonall of us involved in the negotiations,” said Ngubane. Numsa is a union representing over 220 000 workers in the metal and engineering sector in South Africa. Numsa wants a total ban on labour brokers, catering for the needs of employees who work short time, a housing allowance of not less than R1

000 per month for each worker in the industry, training of staff and the recognition of shopstewards. The Master Builders of South Africa (MBSA) are also holding a strike which has just entered its fourth week, causing a building material shortage. In a statement, Dlamini said, “The plumbing industry has reported a critical shortage of geysers and the piling sector, which relies heavily on steel reinforcement for foundation work, is struggling to obtain supplies. Intimidation is taking place outside factories which means that MBSA members cannot collect roof sheeting andstructuralsteel.Thisnewsetback could well be the last straw for many struggling contractors.” Last week, Numsa rejected the conditional offer from the employer body, Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa), of a 10% increase in 2014, 9.5% in 2015 and 9% in 2016. Seifsa eventually withdrew this offer and by last week Friday, had announced that the new offer on the table was 10% in 2014, 9% in 2015 and 8% in 2016 for rate H workers; 8% in 2014, 7.5% in 2015 and 7% in 2016 for rate A employees. Seifsa said that the strike has

already cost the country more than R300 million a day in the engineering and metals sector alone. Some local steel companies voiced their frustrations. One of the management representatives from local company Rogue Steel said that if the strike continues for the next two to three weeks, family owned steel companies that have limited resources might have to close their doors. “One of our delivery trucks was stopped by striking Numsa members while out delivering in Pinetown. We ended up not delivering to one of our clients and we had to come back with the stock. “We are currently not getting any replacement of stock. This is not a fair strikebecausethereareNumsaunion members who want to be back at work. “A lot of people could lose their jobs. It is not a rosy picture,” said the manager who preferred to remain unnamed. A manager from NJR Steel said that the company has suffered shortfalls because its suppliers have not been able to fulfil deliveries. “One of the company vehicles was capsized while making deliveries in Durban. There was a security

company on site so they were able to report the matter to the police on our behalf. If the strike continues for the next three weeks, most of our stock will be depleted.” Meanwhile, Pietermaritzburg car dealerships have said that they are not affected by the strike. The national spokesperson of Toyota, Mary Willemse, said that Toyota has suspended production on its Corolla and Innovative Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) lines. This includes the Hilux and Fortuner production. “Production on Quantum (mini buses) and truck plants still continues,” said Willemse. Economist Mike Schussler said that South African steel manufacturing stands at 22% and contributes to about 14% of the national economy growth. He said that no production is making the economy decline. “The strike is also hitting general purpose machinery. So it is directly affecting about 3,5% of the economy. Construction and motor manufacturing is also indirectly affected, which probably then affects about 10% of the total South African economy,” he said. Schussler added that the Rand will remain under pressure more so than

before. “If the Rand weakens, it will be evenworseforpriceswhichwillagain go up,” he said. Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business CEO Melanie Veness said that there are quite a number of businesses in the metal industry that have been adversely affected by the strike. She said that the local steel manufacturing industry is a critical component which contributes to the local gross domestic product (GDP), henceitconstitutessomeofPietermaritzburg’s largest employers. “An inability to meet order obligations can result in penalties for business and/or the loss of future orders, constraining the economy further. “Prolongedlabouractioncanclose businesses down, resulting in job losses,asopposedtowage increases for some. “Prolonged strikes also make us unattractive from an investment point of view. The Telkom national office had publicly stated that the management pool, which the company seeks to reduce, is made of up to 2650 managerial staff.

Through these retrenchments, Telkom states that it wants to bring services closer to people by getting rid of unnecessary levels of management, improving customer service and experience. Telkom stated that the restructuring will keep the business afloat as it has failed to meet revenue targets. Telkom’s communications manager, Pynee Chetty, said that he could not exactly say how many members from management are likely to be affected since processes are still ongoing. However, he said that since most of the staff from the management pool is based in Johannesburg, there is the likelihood that most of the retrenchments will hit there. Telkom has a regional office in Durban and the retrenchments might affect a small number of employees in that area, said Chetty. “It is unlikely that we might be having

retrenchments in Pietermaritzburg, however the processes are still ongoing,” he said. Early this month, Telkom stated that through the restructuring and retrenchment process, it is not targeting specific individuals, but mainly wants to reduce management layers and employee costs, with the latter costing the company 30% of revenue. Telkom stated that it had considered a number of options in order to avoid retrenchments, by offering voluntary separation and early retirement options to staff, expand the revenue base and getting rid of fruitless investments. On Monday and Tuesday, Telkom had facilitated consultation meetings with worker representatives, including the Communication Workers Union (CWU), on how the restructuring and retrenchment processes will be structured. ROBBER gang brazenly smashed their way into a Montrose home, ignoring warnings that police and security companies were en-route. Despite having been seen, being told police were on their way and a blaring house alarm sounding off, the robber gang broke down a glass door and grabbed a TV, laptop, cellphones and other items before fleeing. Brothers Thomas (20) and James Martin (18) were at home in Montrose on Saturday night - Thomas’s last night before returning to Stellenbosch University - when James let the dog out at about 10 pm. “Inoticedthefrontgatewasslightlyopened. I called my brother to come and see because I thought he had left it open by mistake. As he came out, one suspect was standing in front of our garage. “We shouted to him that we were calling the policeandaskedwhathewasdoinginouryard. He approached us, saying ‘Calm down, calm down’. Then we ran into the house and locked the doors,” said James. The brothers pressed a panic button and armed themselves with baseball bats. It appeared that there were four suspects in the yard armed with a gun and knives. “They used a verandah chair to smash the glass door. We were shouting at them that the police were on their way but they took no notice.Theywerenotscared,”saidJames,adding that one spoke English well. After the robbers made off with their loot, they encountered police and security companies who responded to the desperate cry for help from the two youngsters at the Montrose Drive house. The robbers opened fire on police, who returned fire. It’s believed one of the robbers was shot in the leg as he and his accomplices made a quick getaway. A resident some 300 metres away apparently found blood trailing down the verandah of his home. ER24 was asked to attend the scene by SA CAN. Andrew Rogers of ER24 said they checked the youngsters over and found they were fine. The police were unable to find the robbers, who sources speculated were well-acquainted with the area and their escape routes. The TV

Chaos as burst water pipe FEVER floods PMB Magistrate’s court July 23, 2014

A burst water pipe caused chaos at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court this week. Court officials and members of the public patiently waited outside the court for about an hour while the problem was addressed. N average housewife with the desire to keep the community informed about PMB happenings. This describes Shanaaz Bux who began Crime Alert PMB, which operates instantaneously on Blackberry Messenger. Bux, known to her 4 000 or so contacts as the friendly neighbourhood butterfly, broadcasts traffic updates, accident scenes, house break-ins and the like, which enables her to keep the community as informed as possible in an effort to fight crime. Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Bux said that she began to broadcast traffic updates to her neighbours when she went out during the day to her children from school. She said that she would let them know where there were robots not working or traffic congestion. It was from those humble beginnings that Crime Alert PMB was born and since November 2013, with just a few contacts, Bux now operates two phones with 2 000 contacts on each. Bux has on her contacts list police members, reporters, rescue services, firemen and citizens. Whoever sees a crime, traffic issue or anything that they feel other citizens should know about, they let Bux know and she broadcasts it to her contact list. Bux has been the ‘first on the scene’ for many criminal activities that have taken place in the city recently, sometimes even before the police because she has

direct contact with the citizens. “We need to work together to help others, Letting each other know what’s going on in the community around us,” she said. Bux said that the community response has been overwhelming. “People have been so impressed with what I’m doing because it’s immediate.” However Bux said that there have been people who have abused the resource. “I do get people who try to pull pranks on me. I cannot verify if what they are telling me is true or not. People need to understand thatiftheydotrytoprankme,they are wasting resources, time and effort,” she said. Bux also said that she works with the municipality task team in an effort to address illegal electricity connections in the city. She urged citizens to report the connections and emphasized the importance of the citizens taking photos as proof. “We need to stand together and address crime in the city. We needtoletthecriminalsknowthat there is someone out there doing something about it. “Crime Alert PMB doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to the community and we all need to be a part of it,” said Bux. Bux appeals to anyone who would like to help run Crime Alert PMB to contact her. Her goal is to run Crime Alert PMB in the individual suburbs throughout the city. S a first step, the Mandela Day clean up to address the dirty streets of PMB should be lauded. However, dirty streets are the result of a way of life by messy people. Unless serious efforts are made to change the “dirt spreading” way of life of those members of the public who cause the dirty streets, the battle will not be won - ever. I recollect an occasion pre-1994 when the then Parks Board had invited members of the then Natal MEC’s and some KwaZulu-Natal cabinet ministers on a tour of one of the game reserves. NDREW McFadden has been slowly making a name for himself in the photographic world, and has now been selected as the official photographer for Maritzburg United Football Club. Born and bred in Pietermaritzburg, McFadden, better known as BOOGS Photography, started taking photography seriously only two years ago. He took a liking to it when his friend, fellow photographer Dani Jesen, said that he should try his hand at it. “I literally took my mom’s camera one day, went to an event and started taking pictures. Soon after that, when people started seeing my photos, they liked them and then I thought that this was actually something I could do,” he said. He said that he took a beginners course in photography but left half way through. “I basically taught myself how to take pictures. When I took the class, I had already learnt so many other advanced techniques and taking photos was natural for me.” McFadden is passionate about action sport photography. “I prefer for the moment to come to me rather than making the moment myself,” he said. Speaking on his appointment as official photographer, hesaidthathefeelsasthoughhe has taken a step closer to being taken as a serious photographer. Thename‘Boogs’camefrom his sister, who called him that when she was growing up. “I just thought that it was a cool name and it would be something that people would remember, “ said McFadden. Successful city clean up

HE streets of Pietermaritzburg were filled with eager residents participating in the city clean upinitiativeincelebrationofMandela Day this year. Whether it was businesses and organizations cleaning up their premisesandsurrounds,orresidents cleaning up their streets with their neighbours,countlesspeopleworked together to clean up the city. Melanie Veness, director of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business, said that there was a strong presence from city businesses. “The response was very positive, with large and small enterprises doing their bit for a cleaner city. While cleaning the city is a municipal function, it is citizens that dirty the city,” she said. She added that everyone has a responsibility to educate children, fellow citizens and staff about not littering. “We need to set a good example. I applaud all those who took to the streets to clean our beautiful city and to set an example,” said Veness. One of the participating organizations was the Gay and Lesbian Network,whichtookupthechallenge and cleaned up the street from its office, down Langalibalele Street, to Theatre Lane and Timber Street. A total of 15 bags of rubbish were collected and were left on the pavement for the municipality waste department to collect. Anthony Waldhausen, GLN director, said that it was a great day. “What struck me most when actually cleaning up the streets is how filthy they are, and that there is lack of pride amongst the citizens of our city who can litter and mess up the city,” he said. Waldhausen went on to say that streets poles were covered with adverts on abortion and walls were covered with adverts for events. “The people who do this show no respect to municipal and private property. I hope that citizens of this municipality start working towards taking back their city and do not litter,” he said.

Madiba magic TWO Cowan House pupils experienced a little bit of Madiba magic on Mandela Day while participating in the city clean up. Catherine Johnson and Stephanie van Niekerk decided to spend their 67 minutes clearing the litter along Dennis Shepstone Drive near Cowan House. They were quite daunted at the beginning when they saw the rubbish strewn all over the pavement, but armed with black bags and marigolds, they set to work. The reactions of people driving by were encouraging; hoots and thumbs-up and shouts of thank you kept them going. After 67 minutes, they still had a big section of the pavement near the school gate to clear. Johnson bent down to pick up some rubbish under an aloe and found a tiny burnt piece of paper with only room enough for one sentence: “It always seems impossible until it’s done,” Nelson Mandela.

ARKLANE CENTRE, in partnership with the Maritzburg Fever, Blu Gel, Sole’ Salon in Victoria Road, Eric Muller and Redlands Beauty and Hair, spent Mandela Day 2014 treating cancer patients to a pampering session and tea. More than 67 ladies took the pampering session offer up and were present at their assigned salons early in the morning to start their day. All of the ladies were either in remission or undergoing treatment. They arrived at Parklane Centre for a tea hosted in their honour and sponsored by various centre tenants. The ladies were given a talk by Lisa Strydom, regional director of Cansa, about the importance of eating right and living a healthy life. Goodie bags were also handed out to some of the lucky ladies at the tea. Linda Mare’, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, said that it was absolutely amazing to be honoured in such a way. “It’s been a long road, and it’s very scary, but it teaches you a lot. To be treated like this is so special.” “Sitting in that chair getting pampered was so amazing because we don’t get to treat ourselves like this,” said Ilona Roberts. She said that she was diagnosed only four months ago and it has been a rollercoaster ride since then. “We just take one day at a time and we are thankful for our life. This just made us feel so special and we are very grateful,” she said. Mare’ said that being treated like this made her feel as though she could be an inspiration to someone else. “You’ve got to wake up every morning with a smile on your face because you never know how many days you have left.”

EVENTY-FIVE years after serving for his country, the oldest member of the Moths is still patriotic to the core. Peter Barlow Jones was only 19 when he volunteered to be part of the Active Citizen Force (ACF). Little did he know the experience would shape his entire outlook on life. Jones, now living in Blackridge, was trained as a soldier at the Bisley Valley (Oribi) army camp and fought in World War 2 in 1939, when South Africa declared war against Germany. Now 94 years old, Jones is the oldest serving member of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moths) in the country, and probably the third eldest in the world. “I have been a member of the Moths for 70 years,” he said. Jones said he joined the ACF because the war was imminent and “it was adventurous”. His father fought in the First World War (WW1) as a Captain. Jones still drives a car and, although he suffers from hearing problems, his memory is still very sharp when he talks about his experiences in the war. “Thewartaughtmehowtoread people. I can tell you by just looking at the person that they are either good or bad,” said Jones, sitting next to his wife, Colleen.

How Jones escaped during the war: Jones played a game of matches to escape from Egypt after he had been injured. He said many people wanted a place on the boat back to South Africa, but there was only space for ten people. “So we played a game of matches, where we had to guess how many matches a person had been given,” he said. Jones said he was lucky to be the first one selected for the boat ride when he guessed the correct number of matches a soldier held concealed in his hand. “The war is not a wonderful thing to go to because it is not nice to kill other people,” said Jones.

The two met after he returned from the war, and were married in 1954. Jones pulled up his trouser pants leg to show scars from shrapnel. “I was wounded after three years of fighting at the age of 21 years old during the intense Battle of Gazala in Egypt.” After his injury, Jones moved back to South Africa to work at the Railways, fixing locomotives in Ladysmith. a family while working in the Nkana copper mines. “When my four children were growing up and needed better education, we moved back to SA,” he said. “If I were to do it again, I would, to defend my country.” His motto in life is, “Let everyone get on with their lives and stop dictating to other people how to live their lives to avoid friction.” He said this has been his secret to longevity.

THE Department of Health in KZN is offering bursaries to the needy, and qualifying young people, who want to pursue their studies in various fields of medicine. According to the department’s spokesperson in KZN, Desmond Motha, there are R200 million worth of bursaries that will be offered in 2015. Motha said young people whose applications are welcomed are those who are already at tertiary institutions and studying health related courses. Young people who have passed and qualify to be

enrolled at tertiary institutions but have no funds to further themselves are invited to apply, he said. He added that all matriculants who have applied at tertiary institutions, been accepted and have proof that they have been accepted are also urged to forward their applications. “Young people must be aware that these bursaries will be offered in pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, oral hygiene, radiography (diagnostic and ultrasound), medicine, psychology (clinical), emergency medical care, medical orthotics and prosthetics, health promotion, optometry, audiology, psychiatry and zoology. Applicants must sign when receiving and returning the application form to the same institution where the form was obtained. No posted applications will be considered. THE Talbot Trail Run Series hosted its final event recently, in crisp conditions that necessitated an early morning bonfire to keep the runners warm before they headed into the Umgeni Valley. The long course included two ice cold river crossings that created chatter amongst the runners huddled in the 5°C temperature. Fortunately, the run was difficult and on reaching the first river crossing, alltherunnershadwarmedupenough. The cold water had a variety of effects, from soothing tired legs to causing cramp. “It’s unusual to tackle big river crossings in the middle of winter and there are runners who don’t do this event because of it, but for others it’s very exciting and creates a thrill that has them on a high for the rest of the weekend,” said race organiser Andrew Booth from KZN Trail Running. Solicitor Mandulja completed his second win of the series after winning the Table Mountain event. It was the same story for second place, with Ayanda Mlotshwa claiming the same spot he did at the previous event of the

series. Muzi Madikwa, winner of many previous Talbot Series events, had to settle for solid third place. In the ladies, it was Trish Bahlman who took the honours by more than 10 minutes, making her first showing on the trail after a very successful Comrades Marathon. Second was Erin Jarvie and third was Stephane Montgomery. Unfortunately, Kate Gournaris missed a turning and went off course for a while, resulting in her dropping out of a definite podium finish. At prize-giving, extra mention of the good The Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) does for the river the runners had experienced that day was made. Natalie Bergstrom has won the title on SA Cross Country champion for the third year in a row.

OR the third year in a row, local cyclist Natalie Bergstrom has won the Veteran Ladies category (40 - 49 years old) in the South African Cross Country Championships which were held at Thaba Trails in Johannesburg this weekend. “I am very excited to have won again. It was a title along with many others that I wanted to retain in my 2014 season,” said Bergstrom, who is also currently the leading lady in the ROAG series. Along with this title win, she has numerous podium titles, placed third in the ladies category with her partner in the SANI 2C 2014 and won the ladies Cyclecross Tour Durban 2014 along with others. “Cross country is exciting, very technical and fast but challenging in that you can’t lose focus for a moment or you will come short. “I find it exhilarating though and enjoy the challenge,” said Bergstrom. Bergstrom only started her cycling career about three years ago and is not only the SA Cross Country champion, but also the South African National champion. “With the World Masters Cross Country Championships in Norway under a month away, I’m ready for action. Having achieved my goal of taking theWorld MasterschamptitleatCascadesinPietermaritzburg last year, I am determined to hold onto it as long as I can,” she said. After a successful fundraising campaign, Bergstrom is set for the trip to Lillehammer in Norway. “Making my dream happen has been hard work. I am very excited but also anxious at the same time, not knowing what to expect as I have never raced overseasbefore.Mygameplanistogobigandtobring the gold home. I would like to thank everyone for all the amazing support; it has been overwhelming and so appreciated,” she said.
