Nersa’s 12% set to affect affordability >> Pacsa said that the increase will erode any wage victories that striking workers might have won within the past year NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

T

HE Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (Pacsa) believes that the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) decision to allow for Eskom’s 12.7% tariff increase for the 2015/2016 term will have a devastating impact on the working class and poor households. Nersa announced the decision earlier this month. Pacsa said that the increase will erode any wage victories striking workers have won within the past year. Pacsa’s research and advocacy officer, Julie Smith, said that the Nersa increase will mean that the

high tariffs Eskom will pass onto municipalities will make electricity more unaffordable. “Traditionally, profits on electricity revenue were about 15% - 18%, as municipalities used to add on their own percentage increases onto the baseline Eskom tariff. Municipalities used this extra revenue to fund many of their municipal services and other municipal activities. “This means that municipalities nolongerhavetheextrarevenuetobe able to fund some of their processes. So the high Eskom tariffs have a massive impact on municipal revenues and may result in significantfinancialshortfallswhichimpact on the services they can provide their citizens,” said Smith. For the Pietermaritzburg working

class and poor households, Smith said that the increase will force their monthly electricity expenses to increase by a minimum of R59.14 up to R525 per month. “ High electricity tariffs are a direct threat to the ability of working class households to secure sufficient and nutritious food. It will result in massive protests across the country, as ordinary people will be forced to fight to put food on their tables,” said Smith. Should municipalities increase their tariffs to match Nersa’s 12% increase for Eskom, the low-income households will battle to afford nutritious food for their families. The way our neo-liberal economy is structured, means that other essential non-negotiable payments

come before food, stated Smith. She said this includes expenses such as transport costs, electricity, whichismainlyusedforcookingfood, burial insurance, furniture repayments, education costs and water. “When households are forced to make payments on other essential and non-negotiable expenses, where credit control and debt collection is ruthless, there is not a choice; households are forced to modify where they can manoeuvre, where they have control and this is typically food. Food is one of the few expenses which low-income households are able to control and because of this, other non-negotiable expenses take precedent,” said Smith. To save electricity, Smith said that

a lot of households have stopped cooking food which takes longer to prepare, suchasrawsugarbeansand samp. However, she said that the situation may vastly improve should Nersa intervene to make sure that the municipal tariffs are restructured to ensure affordability. “Unless Nersa intervenes at municipal level to ensure that tariffs are restructured for affordability at low consumption volumes, and that free basic electricity volumes are increased substantially and provided to all low-income households, particularly households in Pietermaritzburg on prepaid meters who are currently excluded, then the increases must be resisted,” she explained.

ITH the most important month ahead of them, schools and pupils are gearing up for the National Senior Certificate examination which gets underway on 27 October. According to Debbie Martin, deputy headmaster of academics at Maritzburg College, the demands of the new CAPS syllabus for maths and physical science, inparticular, placed increased pressure on teachers and pupils alike. “They rose to the challenge, with teachers showing their commitment by teaching before and after school and the boys availed them-

selves to the opportunity. Their diligence was admirable.” Martin stated that extra lessons and revision classes were held for pupils long after the matric syllabus was completed. “The teachers have prepared the girls to the best of their ability and are confident that they are suitably prepared,” said Lize Reintjies, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School counsellor. The Department of Education in KwaZuluNatal said that they are prepared and ready for the commencement of the exams, with 148 000 pupils registered to write. The first main paper will be English home and first additional language. The exams will be completed on 28 November. Teachers at various schools said that there was a sense of mixed feelings amongst the matric classes, who are excited to finish school, sad to leave their friends and nervous about their upcoming exams. “Some boys are apprehensive about being the first year through the CAPS exams, and are anxious that they achieve what they hope in order to secure their plans for next year. There is also a sense of sadness as they are a close group of boys who really value their school and the friendships

they have made. But obviously there is excitement about facing the challenges of life after school,” said Martin. Pupils are also encouraged to get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet and take regular breaks, to have a walk or a jog to clear their minds which is all essential for a calm and positive exam period. “Planning their study time carefully, and having an end reward in mind, are also important to ensure that they remain focused,” said Reintjies. All schools wished their pupils well for their exams and for the future. “It is a short time that you have to give it your all and sacrifice a little fun. So exercise self-discipline because you will reap the benefits of your hard work. Visualise yourself looking at your matric results and focus now to make that a proud, wonderful moment,” said Martin. Muzi Mahlambi, KZN department of education spokesperson said that ensuring integrity and credibility of this year’s exams is of the utmost importance. Various role players, including district and provincial officials, will be monitoring the exams and the SAPS will provide safety and security support and will monitor papers in transit.

The remains of the burnt house in Northdale, where three people died. PHOTOS: NASH NARRANDES

Julia Radebe comforting Noluthando Kabile, whose son died during the blaze while her other fiveyear-old boy sustained serious injuries.

Three killed as Northdale house goes up in flames KHANYISANI DLOMO “IT WAS like a movie on 3D at the cinema.” These were the words of the survivor of the fire that claimed three lives, including a one-year-old baby, in Northdale on the weekend. Nokulunga Nene (19), her baby Siyamthanda and Mhlengi Kabine (13), were burnt to death during the blaze. Nene’s boyfriend and a five-year-old sustained serious injuries, while three Buthelezi siblings escaped unharmed. The fire started at about 3am. A visibly shocked Nomonde

Buthelezi (20) said the fire started in the dining room, but she had no idea how it started. She was in her room with her younger brother, Nduduzo, when she felt the heat. “When I woke up, the lounge was ablaze. My brother and I screamed and tried to alert the others. The fire was spreading quickly, but we managed to exit through the kitchen door.” She said neighbours rushed to help them, breaking windows and burglar bars to save those trapped inside, but the heat kept them from going closer. Firefighters managed to rescue five-yearold Manelisi Kabine, who is in a critical condition in Edendale Hospital. “The traumatic part is that we could hear them screaming for help, but we were unable to. The cry of the baby is still resounding in my ears,” said Buthelezi. Manelisi’s mother, Noluthando, who also lost her son Mhlengi in the fire, was not home at the time. “Godblessedmewithtwosonsandnowwhy is He punishing me like this. What did I do to deserve this?” she said. Neighbour TK Nciliba said he had earlier used a hosepipe to try and douse the fire, before using a hammer to break the window and burglar guards, but could not get in because of the heat. “We tried our best. When I tried to extinguish it, the fire jumped over my head and I stepped back. The fire was quick,” said Nciliba. “I then saw the father of the baby throwing himself out of the window. That time the blaze was uncontainable. Then the roof fell,” he added. Another neighbour, Julia Radebe, said the community is shocked. “I heard the overwhelming screams and woke up. We tried to assist, but it was too late. Seeing people die in front of my eyes is traumatic,” said Radebe. Police spokesperson Jay Naicker said the cause of fire is unknown and an inquest docket was opened at Mountain Rise SAPS.

FORMER managing director of The Witness, Greg Orsmond, faced 453 charges of fraud when he appeared in the Durban Special Commercial Crimes Court. Orsmond was managing director of The Witness Group and Fever Newspaper Group until he was axed in April 2013 after the discovery of “gross negligence” on his part. An audit and forensic investigation revealed Orsmond had allegedly siphoned off nearly R11 million from the mainstream and community media houses. The audit resulted in the fraud charges he faced in court. Orsmond stepped briefly into the dock, looking

dishevelled and crestfallen and was released on bail of R10 000 ahead of his next appearance in November. His attorney Satch Morgan said Orsmond, a father of three, had co-operated with the investigating officer and would appear in court when required. In a detailed charge sheet before the court, Orsmond is alleged to have made unauthorised payments amounting to nearly R11 million for his personal gain. The charge sheet indicated 267 charges related to payments made for the distribution of newspapers, but investigators claim the service was never rendered. Those charges account for nearly R10,5 million. “Investigation revealed Sky Blue Media [a Fever Newspapers subsidiary] made payments into the account of Trifid Design wherein the accused was the sole proprietor. Theaccusedauthorisedand requested payment for services that were never rendered,” the charge sheet reads. The remaining 186 fraud charges arise from alleged Greg Orsmond in court PHOTO: JEFF WICKS

ghost payments for distribution the state contends actually went to private building upgrades to his home and which were worth nearly R670 000. “Investigations revealed this was for private and personal work done on the accused’s farm in Shelly Beach.” In a handwritten affidavit penned by Orsmond, he indicated he had made an effort to fully co-operate with the investigation team and would continue to do so. He also said he was employed and his income supported his family. Media24, which now owns The Witness, obtained a high court judgment against Orsmond late in 2013 for R10 119 178,23 (plus interest dating from July 6, 2013). The judgment was obtained in respect of damages suffered as a result of alleged “reckless or grossly negligent and/or fraudulent conduct” on the part of Orsmond. Orsmond had since failed to satisfy the judgment or indicate to the sheriff disposable property that was sufficient to satisfy it. He was found to be insolvent, because his liabilities exceeded his known assets, and placed under sequestration in April this year.

Msunduzi improves meter reading NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za THE Auditor-General may be a bit lenient on the Msunduzi Municipality come the next audit of the municipality’s financial statements, seeing that they have managed to decrease the number of estimated meter readings to only 1.91% of the total estimated meters. AttherecentMunicipalPublicAccounts Committee (Mpac) meeting, it was revealed that by 9 September this year the estimated readings of meters were at 1.91%. A presentation on meter reading shows that on 17 September last year, there were 8790 electricity meters and 11843 water meters which were estimated. At the time, the total number of estimated meters was 20633 which contributed to 18.2% of the total meters that were estimated. Due to the high percentage of estimated meter readings, and other matters, the AG gave the municipality a qualified report. The recent report for 9 September 2014 shows that the number of estimated electricitymeterswas,atthetime,748and with water meters it was 1380. By 9 September, the total number of estimated meters was 2128 which represents only 1.91% of the total estimated meters. “The purpose of the presentation is to provide an update on the work done by the meter reading task team so far. The task team comes from electricity, water, finance, and survey departments. We have come a long way. We have been meeting every Friday morning to discuss the progress and to find a way forward. There has been a great improvement in addressingthisissue,”saidtheprocessmanagerfor expenditure, Sipho Nxumalo.

Government debt headache for Msunduzi Municipality NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za THE Msunduzi Municipality still battles to deal with collections of government debt. At the recent Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac) meeting, Msunduzi’s CFO Nelisiwe Ngcobo said that the municipality is planning to appoint a service provider to help with the collection of its debt from government departments, residents and the business sector. “We are on the verge of appointing a service provider because as much as we have done our best in terms of collection, we seem to be regressing from the percentage that we had last year. “On average, last financial year we were collecting 95% but because we have taken over Vulindlela, it has pushed our debt up and reduced the percentage,” said Ngcobo. Shesaidthattheyhavemetwiththe KZN MEC for Finance Belinda Scott to discuss the collection of the government debt. “We explained that we are failing to collect from government departments. At least with the Department of Public Works, there are some agreements because that department is paying in consultation with our own staff and they are cooperating. “We have pleaded with her [Scott]

According to Msunduzi records, the government debt for the 2012/ 2013financialyearwasR91-million. Last month, Maritzburg Fever reported that the KZN Department of Public Works, National Department of Public Works, Umgeni and the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) owed the Msunduzi Municipality R46 065 558.74, R36 454 763, R7 789 568.40 and R1 539 123.12 respectively, and that the total schools debt was R12 582 849. This year the government debt had recently reached R122 million. Ngcobo further stated that Scott had requested that the municipality conducts an audit of water meters for Section 21 schools. Mpac member and ward councillor, Sipho Madonda, said that it is high time the municipality sorts out the government debt because the matter has been tabled in the past and has been discussed before, but nothing has come to fruition. At one of the council meetings held last year, the municipality had armed itself with an appointment of a panel of seven attorneysand17credit controllers to recoup the cash from residents, businesses and government departments who owe the municipality. This was a much needed action seeing that the total debt was R1,267 billion. From this IN STOCK staggering amount, NOW! the Department of Works managed to pay R9 million and the Human Settlements department paid R11 million. At the time of the release of the billion debt report, it was reported that the municipality does not have LOCALLY enoughstafftotackle MADE debt collection. Male breast cancer awareness campaign >> Self examination around the breast area should be done on a regular basis NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

W

ITH October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, a local woman from Montrose has started a social media awareness campaign on male breast cancer, after her uncle succumbed to the disease in July this year. Yeshni Sookraj urged all men to get screened for breast cancer, just as women do. “To be honest, I had not heard about male breast cancer before my uncle, Anesh, was diagnosed in 2012. My experience was very personal as my uncle lived with my family and served asafatherfigureto both my brother and myself. Anesh was diagnosed in 2012 when his GP discovered a lump on his breast and sent him for an X-ray. A biopsy was performed and staging followed. “We then found out that the he had stage four male breast cancer a month later. Anesh underwent aggressive chemo therapy for over a year and a half and then opted for oral chemo for a few months. He passed away on July 7 2014, at the age of 46. He had completed seven Comrades Marathon races and held a Masters in Quality. “He was in the process of completing his PHD in 2012 when he was diagnosed. Luckily, he was not married or have any children. This clearly shows that any man is capable of getting breast cancer,” said Sookraj. She believes that there should be more awareness of male breast cancer because most men have not even heard of the disease and the general public is not well informed. “Men who do know may feel embarrassed to talk

about it, so there is a need to spread awareness and raise a flag so that men feel comfortable to start talking about it. There is definitely a stereotype around breast cancer as many people think that only females get it. “Self examination around the breast area should be done on a regular basis and if lumps are found, the person should see their doctor for a clinical examination immediately. The earlier any cancer is detected the greater the chance of survival. I encourage men to get tested not only for themselves, but for the sake of their loved ones. My experience with male breast cancer has taught me that people cannot take their health for granted.Weallhave to be aware of the signsourbodygives us and take action when we feel something is wrong. Anesh was diagnosed when his cancer had progressed to stage four. It could have been detected earlier,” she said. To spread awareness, Sookraj has since started Facebook and Twitter social media pages. She said that these social media pages will serve as an educational platform where men can learn more about male breast cancer. “I encourage the public to join these pages to help spreadawareness.IhavefoundoutthatSouthAfricahas the highest male breast cancer rate in the world and this was revealed by the Breast Health Foundation last year. Two out of every 100 people diagnosed with breast cancer in South Africa are men. The disease clearly is under-diagnosed,” she said. Sookraj said that she will never forget her uncle’s birthdays and special moments they shared together. “I will remember him as a kind, loving and selfless person,” she said.

THE Consulate General of the United States of America is encouraging PMB residents in the business and entrepreneurship, public management and public service and community engagement fields to apply for the intensive six-week 2015 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders to be held next winter. Speaking at an event held at the Bessie Head Library, the public affairs officer for the Consulate General of the United States of American, Mike Carr, said that the young African leaders’ initiative is about discovering the best minds within the African continent. “The partnership between the Bessie Head Library, the Consulate General of the United States of America and the Msunduzi Municipality is a very important one. I have had the privilege of working in various African countries but I have to say, this is the finest American corner which is best managed with one of the best facilities,” said Carr. He said that US President Barack Obama’s overall philosophy is to work together with Africa’s greatest, with its societies and sharing information on how to better the livelihood of Africans.

“The Mandela Washington fellows are a select group each year of 500 from all over Africa who spend six weeks in the United States in an intensive programme of mentorship and leadership training. We are looking for applicants again for this cycle for 2015, which will take place in winter, and we are looking for people who are working in the three areas mentioned,” explained Carr. Bessie Head Library manager Mandla Ntombela urged the public to grab this opportunity. “When opportunities like this avail, let us grab those opportunities,” he said. iNkosi Sbonelo Mkhize who is a chief of the Abambo Clan, is one of the 500 Mandela Washington fellows who travelled to the United States for the 2014 cycle. He said that those who succeed in attending the training must come home and give back knowledge and skills to their communities. “This programme is about how we change our society. As Africans, we are alive with possibilities and we can make our continent a better place to live in,” he said. From ‘gatvol’ to hopeful

IKEmostofus,weliveona24hourbasis and are informed and bombarded via numerous channels on the TV, radio, news media, by word of mouth and personal incidents etc. of all the bad service deliveries by our municipality and government. Afewweeksago, mydaughter’scarlicence could not be renewed as the computer records showed that the car had been reported stolen in Pretoria on 30 November last year. The car was also subsequently scrapped on the computer data base. Needless to say, this car never was and will never be in the Pretoria /Tshwane area, and is in our possession, but this fact did not help us one iota and I found myself in the motor licensing department in Pietermaritzburg. The clerk at the information desk confirmed the worst but kindly explained that I had to report to the SAPS Motor vehicle retrieval division in Mkondeni with the vehicle. Fuming and ready for a fight, I went in search of the person I saw as responsible for the car being reported stolen and scratched

at the retrieval division. At the entrance, I was stopped by the gate keeper in civilian clothes and after a short conversation, we were joined by a female police officer. In a friendly manner, she took the car’s logbook and asked the guard to allow me onto the premises and show me where to park as well as guide me to the office where she would meet up with me. After a few minute waiting in the office, she called me to another office where she and a captain had already traced the details of the stolen report and the fact that someone made a mistake and had basically used the car licence number in some shady transaction. The three people mentioned went out of their way to attend to the problem in the most civil, courteous and empathic manner and then directed me to the offices to a site/premises adjacent and again, the gate keeper was very helpful and courteous in giving advice and directions. Unfortunately, eager to solve my problem, I did not pause long enough to obtain their

names and or job titles. Now at the business end of this unit (where the actual vehicles are traced, recouped and stored) we met up with an enthusiastic bunch of people, with Inspector van Loggerenberg in the forefront, who all wenttheextramiletosort out my problem. By the following day, we were able to pay for and licence the car for the next year. On the Tuesday, I also inquired on how to go about changing the ownership of another vehicle that was to be registered into the name of an heir in a deceased estate. The lady promptly collected a form from the inquiry desk and completed same, and then gave me a licence of three days to drive the car around PMB to get it fixed and checked for COR.

Now this occurred with a longish queue and very sluggish computer systems at the time. A week later I returned with the handful of documentationof thiscar, and here I did take the name of the attending clerk at the motor licensing department - Charmaine Harper - who again went to great pains in attending to me in a very friendly and proficient manner, and I walked out very satisfied after the great service and with two registered and licensed vehicles. Thus the reason for this letter, where a 60plus grumpy, fair skinned ‘toppy’ was attended to in three governmental /municipal offices by several government employed individuals representing a full mixture of our rainbow nation can walk away invigorated, and with great hope for the next 20 years of the not so new South Africa.

YOUR article “Boycotting Woolworths”(Mariutzburg Fever 15 October, 2014) brings sharply into focus the ignorance of people who, not armed with the relevant facts, will embark on a campaign to even castigate a country which is defending its own territory against avowed international terrorists. Palistinians are laying claim to land which even secular history can corrobo-

rate belongs to Israel and the Jewish nation, giventothembythegreatCreator himself who stated scores of times in the Bible, that Isaac, the son of Abraham and his seed, will possess the land. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, and the senseless killing of innocent people, is definitely not attributed to Israel’s so-called atrocious activities, but to that of the real killers who have a protracted

history of such diabolical behaviour. So, before these well-meaning picketerscontinuewiththeirmisguidedactions, I suggest that they carefully consider the far reaching effects of our very own bedraggled economy, which is in need of even the slightest injection with a view to ultimate stability. WILL the Dalai Lama ever be granted a visa to enter South Africa? He has been refused a visa three times in the last five years. Much has been stated about the ANC government in this respect. Some have stated that we are China’s lapdog, some said that our leaders are spineless and Archbishop Desmond Tutu said that he was ashamed to call this ‘lickspittle’ bunch his government. Lickspittle meaning someone licking someone else’s boots. Tutu is aggravated by the influence the Chinese government has over South Africa. This issue has economic connotations and is economically motivated. China has major investment in this country, creating employment for many citizens, so it would be easy for them to flex their financial muscle to get things done their way. The government is in a catch 22 situation. With the unemployment rate in SA at almost 26%, which translates to almost 5.2 million unemployed people, they have to be cautious. The slow growth of the economy is further compounding the issue of job creation. It may be in this context that the government is bowing to the pressure of China not to award a visa to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Tough times call for unpopular executive decisions. Maybe under the next president, Cyril Ramaphosa, the Dalai Lama will be allowed to enter South Africa. Till 2019 we wait in trepidation to witness whether this will be a reality. At least we have got something to look forward to. VIJAY SURUJPAL Via email

Q&A with Hayden Quinn PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Hayden Quinn will be at the Good Food and Wine Show at the Durban Exhibition Centre this weekend.

NICOLE JOHN

HQ: Well. I had been going out with my current girlfriend for just a couple of months, and I was at her house cooking (showing off) and thought I would do a nice curry. I just picked the wrong pot, it cracked on the stove and the whole thing went up in flames (luckily not the relationship). MF: Who in the food world do you most admire? HQ: There are so many people I love to watch and learnfrombutprobablymybiggestinfluence, andthe person who got me into loving food in the first place, my mum! MF: What is going to be the next big thing in the food world? HQ: Getting back to basics, getting back to family style meals and people actually stopping and enjoying the moment. MF: What do you most love about your job? HQ: The ability to see parts of the world I may never have generally seen, plus meeting all the amazing people along the way. MF: What’s your ‘Last Supper’ meal? HQ: Oh, all I would want is a juicy, succulent cheeseburger (American style) with amazing sweet potato fries and a good quality beer. MF: What are you most looking forward to at The Good Food & Wine Show? HQ: I’m looking forward to meeting the awesome people of Durban! Sharing with them some great food and great stories from my adventures and hopefully learning a thing or two from the locals and other guest chefs.

MASTERCHEF’S Hayden Quinn caught up with the Maritzburg Fever recently for a question and answer session ahead of the Good Food and Wine Show in Durban this weekend. MF: When did you know you wanted to be a foodie? HQ: I think it was when I realised that food is so much more than just something we put in our mouths on a daily basis. There is so much story, passion, culture, colour and flair that comes with food, from the raw product being produced on the land or in the sea to the final dish that hits your table at home or in your favourite restaurant. From this I have always wanted to be able to help share the story of food. MF: What is your favourite food memory? HQ: My first hot dog in Central Park in NYC back in 2005. MF: How do you get your inspiration? HQ: By eating lots! Chatting with other food lovers, listening to what my friends want to be eating. TherearethingslikeYouTube,InstagramandPintrest where there are so many amazing people (who aren’t celebrity chefs) doing the most amazing things. MF: Best piece of advice you would give a home enthusiast? TECH TALK

WE all know the dangers of throwing away sensitive documents with the rest of the rubbish. Identity theft and crime involving stolen bank and credit card data are big business. Fortunately, you can greatly reduce your risk of falling victim. A decent shredder is just one of several options for keeping your crucial paperwork away from prying eyes. Documents you should destroy before discarding include those with bank and credit card numbers, legal and medical information, and passwords or your signature. So what about our personal data we store on our computers? Simply formatting your hard drive to erase data before disposing of themachineisnomoresufficient–asavvythiefcanstillrecoverinformation. There are free programs such as Nuke or HDD Erase to wipe the data off the hard drive more thoroughly, but again there is no guarantee that the data is completely destroyed. For complete peace of mind the only way to protect your data is to physically destroy your hard drive. Removable media such as Flash drives, CDs and DVDs should be erased using your computer. Again, for extra security you can destroy them in various ways. Sanding is effective forCDsandDVDs,butit’smessy.AnotheroptioniscuttingCDsandDVDs into strips. SA-bound Mazda2 wins car of the year >> Mazda2 is the fifth Mazda to win this award

M

AZDA South Africa’s nextgeneration, the Mazda2 won the 2014/15 Japanese Car of the Year. The new Mazda2 is expected to arrive in South Africa early in 2015. Following the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3, the soon-to-belaunched in South Africa Mazda2 is the fourth in Mazda’s line-up of new-generation models that adopt the full range of SkyActive technology and the Kodo-Soul of Motion design language. Mazda says its aspiring to create a new-generation subcompact that would shatter people’s preconceived notions about this class of vehicle. These include an ideal driving position and pedal layout, a human machine interface that prioritises safety, high-quality interior and exterior styling, and a newly-developed SkyActive-D 1.5-litre clean diesel engine which offers maximum torque equivalent to a 2.5-litre petrol engine and outstanding fuel efficiency. THIS month Honda celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Gold Wing touring-style motorcycle with the announcement of a “birthday edition” Wing. That’s a limited number and some will reach South African showrooms. Just five years after producing its first superbikein1969,thecelebratedCB750Honda once again thought “out of the box” by creating the first long-distance touring bike the GL1000 Gold Wing. It boasted shaft drive, a water-cooled flat four engine, disc brakes all around, a touring bike that set standards of comfort and sophistication previously unheard of. Factor in a low centre-of-gravity 19-litre fuel tank, the bike offered a new twist to the definition of high-speed motorcycle touring. The bike had a relaxed feel about it, at 120km/h the motor loped along at only 4000rpm. From standstill a 400m sprint saw a time of around 13 seconds, putting the bike in the same class as the rapid Kawasaki 750 Triple and even a Laverda Jota. Many owners fitted additional touring equipmentsuchaspanniersandheftyfairings with built-in sound systems – the Wing would still managed to pull like a locomotive. Sales success came easily but the factory in

Japan was considered too small to handle serious production numbers so, in 1981, the plant was moved lock, stock and barrel to the Marysville Motorcycle plant in Ohio, in the U.S. Interestingly, sales from 1979 to 1999 surpassed a million, with engine sizes also increasing along the way, ie: 1100cc, 1200cc, 1500cc (six cylinders for 1988). In 2001 the GL 1800 came into being – the first new model in 13 years. It was fuel-injected but a considerably lighter machine thanks to an all-aluminium frame. Anti-lock brakes were optional; the engine, incidentally developed a car-like 97kW. YCLING South Africa has secured the 2015 African Continental Road Cycling Championships and the 2015 African Continental Track Cycling Championships in theCityofPietermaritzburg, furthercementing the on going plans in place with KwaZulu-Natal government and the Department of Sport and Recreation in support of the city as the African UCI Bike City. At a site meeting held at the Sax Young cycle track in Alexander Park, UCI event coordinator for track cycling, Tiziana Lardieri, evaluated thetrackandsurroundsthatwillbeusedforthe 2015 African Continental Track Cycling Championships (21 to 25 January) and the 2016 UCI Para-cycling track world championships, and the local organising committee’s (LOC’s) plans to upgrade this facility. KwaZulu-Natal will also be hosting the 2014 BMX African Continental Championships on the purpose-built Supercross track at Giba Gorge on Sunday, 26 October. This is a major step forward for the sport in South Africa, and Africa as a whole, as this is the first time that the BMX Commission has held a Continental Championship-status event. UCI technical delegate for road cycling events,LaurentBezault, hasbeeninPMB doing evaluations of the various technical elements

allied to the upcoming 2015 African Continental Road Championships. Bezault is extremely happy with all arrangements in place thus far, and expects the event to be one of the best yet staged, predominantly due to the experience of the local organisers as well as the facilities for the event. The event will be staged in and around Wartburg over six days, from 9 to 14 February 2015 There will be three days of time trial competition, starting with a team time trial on the first day, and individual time trials on the following two days, with three days of road racing thereafter. The race routes will be similar to those used previously for the 2012 UCI World Cycling tour final and the 2013 Msunduzi Road Challenge, withthestartandfinishvenuebeing adjacent to the Wartburger Hof Hotel in Wartburg. Local Organising Committee member, Alec Lenferna, said: “We have found that Wartburg and the surrounding areas are great for the staging of the major road events due to the superb terrain and challenging courses that can be put in place to fully test the athletes, quieterroadsandthefactthatthelocalcommunity are accommodating and welcoming,”

Manners maketh the man JONATHAN COOK

Some of the schools insist the boys don their blazers and caps at tea and lunch time, going as far as doing the same as the batting team when going on to the field to shake hands with the opposition at match end. There are many other examples, while indiscipline is not tolerated - players are dropped for the next match. Cricket can be a cruel game where a batsmancangofromzero(itactuallyhappened at Oppenheimer Week) of a first-ball dismissal to a hundred the next day, followed by a first-baller the day after. It teaches humility, an understanding that the game is muchbiggerthantheplayer, theteamisgreater than the individual - it teaches life skills that no classroom can. Why is this important? It builds successful relationshipsthroughanawarenessofhowour actions impact on those around us. And what of win or lose? DHS first XI cricket coach Alan Norton sums itupbest.“Ijudgemysuccessnotonwinorlose, but how many boys continue with the sport after school. Then I know I have instilled a love of the game in them that goes far beyond success or failure.”

WATCHING all four days of a hugely successful Oppenheimer Cricket Week in Pietermaritzburg recently, what stood out more than the superb batting, bowling and fielding was the boys’ manners. The manners are instilled by the coaches and this theme runs through all the top sports schools in the KZN capital, at primary and senior level. Boys raise their caps to strangers, say “Morning Sir/Ma’am, clapping politely to acknowledge an excellent shot or superb piece of bowling or fielding, rising as one to congratulate a batsman who has just been dismissed after playing a fine innings, or a bowler leading his team off to applause after taking five wickets. The example is also set by superb organisation. Outside their jobs as senior deputy headmaster and admissions secretary, Keith Guise-Brown and Biddy Parker put together a wonderful product hosted by Maritzburg College year in and year out - and this rubs off on the players’ behaviour.
