HE wait is finally over for Pietermaritzburg pupils who entered the 2014 KZN Premier Spelling Bee competition. They will be vying for the title of top Bee this Saturday, 23 August at the Eastwood hall in Eastwood. Media24 Local Newspapers KZN, owner of the local community newspaper titles Maritzburg Fever, Edendale Echo and Maritzburg Echo, has teamed up with the Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Premier to roll out the popular competition throughout the province. The spelling bee originally started in Zululand, and is currently enjoying its fifth year there. Outstanding spellers from previously disadvantaged schools stand to walk away with thousands of rands in prizes, including cash for the top spellers and their teachers, books for top spellers and their schools, as well as goodie bags for all teachers and spellers. A former teacher himself, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu said it is critical that the talent and potential of the youth is fully developed and harnessed to guarantee the continuous socio-economic development of the province and the country. “Indoingso, wewillensurethatwe deal decisively with the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” he said earlier this year. Commenting on the official KZN Premier Spelling Bee Facebook page, pupils who will be taking part in the competition expressed confidence that they know all the pre-selected

Grade 11 pupil Xolisile Makhathini from Sobantu Secondary School said, “Preparing for the competition has given me an added opportunity to broaden my English vocabulary. I am looking forward to Saturday.” Sobantu Secondary principal Hopewell Majozi said that he is fascinated by the whole idea. “There are words that we take for grantedandIhavebeenchallengedto look up those words to find their true meaning. This competition has made us realize the true meaning of

vocabulary.” The school’s head of department for languages, Nkosi Mdluli, said that with the arrival of social networks, using the correct English spelling has become a serious problem among pupils. “If you spell the word wrong, the meaning of the sentence might totally be distorted. We hope that the two pupils from our school will do exceptionally well and take top position,” he said with a laugh. Pupils have had almost two months to learn the words that were released on 18 June. The first leg of this year’s competi-

tion was held in Richards Bay three weeksago,where16-year-oldWendy Goqo from Mningi High spelled her way to the top spot and was crowned the 2014 champion for the Zululand region. The South Coast event, held last weekend, was won by Siyabonga Shandu. On Saturday, spellers are required to take their birth certificates or ID books to the event and should be accompanied by no more than two supporters, one of which must be an English teacher. Pupils and schools who have not entered through official channels

prior to the event will not be allowed to take part. For those schools who have entered, registration takes place at 8am sharp. Spellers need to be in the hall and seated by 8.30am. The competition starts at 9am. For more information on the event, phone Vusi Mthalane at 079 389 5205 or visit www.kzn spellingbee.co.za More information is also available on the official Facebook page: KZN Spelling Bee. The Maritzburg Fever and Echo wishes all spellers the best of luck.

HE KZN Department of Health is on high alert for an outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). KZN Department of Health spokesperson, Desmond Motha, said that the department has stepped up Ebola precautions and a number of local health experts have been trained on how to tackle the deadly disease. He said that training is ongoing and that health officials will have protective clothing on at all times when treating Ebola. Motha said that there has not yet been any reports of people infected with the Ebola virus in the province. He said that stringent checks are carried out at entry points to KZN and the country. “We are ready. Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi has chosen Addington Hospital in Durban as one of the 11 hospitals in the country

KZN on high alert for Ebola which will treat Ebola. The hospital has a special isolation unit with eight wards where Ebola patients will receive medical attention. “We have trained doctors, radiographers and nurses who have been equipped with the skills to handle infection control,” said Motha. This Maritzburg Fever reporter has gathered that a 2006 report from the KZN Department of Health reveals that in the uMgungundlovu District, there is a committee which was formed to prepare for patients who have a Lethal Communicable Disease (LCD). The list of LCDs include CrimeanCongo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars), bird flu, Marburg Fever, Ebola fever and the Lassa and Rift Valley fever. The report states that this committee is based at Greys Hospital. On Monday it was reported that a

37-year-old man suspected of having Ebola tested negative for the disease. It has been reported that the man, who has not been identified, worked as a health and safety officer in a mine in Liberia. The countries hit by Ebola include Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria. How is Ebola transmitted? Ebola is introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals. In Africa, infection has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead in the rainforest. Ebola then spreads in the community through human-to-human transmission, with infection resulting from direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and indirect contact with environments contaminated with such fluids. Burial ceremonies in which mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased person can also play a role in the transmission of Ebola. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to seven weeks after recovery from illness. (Source: WHO) Signs and symptoms Symptoms include the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness,

Mann, said that the organization has had a great success rate in reforming children and taking them off the street. “It is not about giving thousands of rands towards an organization. It’s about showing support to the children who are living this difficult life.” Although there was a strong message that children living on the streets should be treated with dignity, the reality is that they are often under the influence of drugs and there have been numerous reports of them terrorising motorists and the public at large. The solution to curbing this would be not to phone the police but rather an organization that can get them off the street. The

HE campaign to find Pietermaritzburg’s Young Lady with Heart is gaining momentum, with the organizers visiting a number of schools encouraging peers and teachers to nominate a Grade 11 school girl who is kind and generous. “Last year, we received such positive feedback from the girls who had been nominated for this award. The girls said that they felt special and worthy and as an organizing committee, we believe that this statement is significant because it has a ripple effect through not only that young lady’s life, but through her circle of friends, her

The nomination fee has been decreased to R10 so there is now even more opportunity for nominations and for peers and teachers to actually nominate several deserving young ladies. “We believe that there are more than 10 young ladies, at least, at each school who need and deserve to be nominated. So let’s do this and make her feel worthy,” said organizer, Ursuhla Govender, whoaddressedthegirlsatRussellHighand Northbury High schools lastweek. One lucky Grade 11 school girl will be awarded the “Belle of the Ball Prize” for her matric dance, valued at R15 000. The 20 finalists will enjoy an enrichment workshop and five will go through to the finals and the sms public vote. The closing date for the campaign has been extended to allow for more schools to accept the invitation from the campaign organizers to address their school. Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.justbou tique.net or requested by email from in fo@justboutique.net. Organizers are happy to collect nomination forms from the schools or they can be handed in at Lady Di Exclusive Boutique and Sole Salons and Spa (Victo ria Road or Liberty Midlands Mall). TECH TALK

THE online storage industry has seen exponential growth over the last two years and has made many lives easier. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, online storage refers to a service that allows you to backup and store important files on the internet. By doing this, you almost completely reduce the risk of data loss. There are three main contenders in the online storage department. There is Microsoft’s OneDrive (previously known as SkyDrive), Google’s Google Drive and last, but not least, DropBox. All three of these products come with their own pros and cons, which would take numerous articles to cover, so we won’t go much into the details. The important sections of each of these products are just about the same. All three of these companies can guarantee privacy and safety, therefore your data will only be accessible to you, unless you choose to share some if it with other parties. All three of these services allows you access to a minimum amount of storage for free, which will allow you to test the product before subscribing to it. I do feel it worth mentioning that DropBox is the most user friendly one of the three (however it is also more expensive). In conclusion, save your photo’s online, save your documents online and make sure you don’t lose anything important when your computer runs into trouble.

Sexy new Renault Megane in SA DAVE FALL - WHEELS24

R

ENAULT’S Megane has, in name at least, been with us since 1995. It’s always been the brand’s halo model and the trend is about to continue with the latest incarnation for 2014 albeit with two allnew siblings this time around a trilogy available in fivedoor hatch or threedoor coupe all incidentally, sporting identical pricing. In an age where cars tend to look mostly the same, it’s pleasing to see the latest Megane threedoor coupe (the only version on show at launch) will become instantly recognisable for its assertive design and futuristic styling and that’s meant as a compliment. From the outside, there’s lots of energet ic and upmarket character via its standout front bumper which includes daytime running lights, while the rear bumper boasts an integrated diffuser and smart 17” dark grey alloys (GTLine).

Refinement and coherence are the keywords here, with the side mirrors and exterior door handles also highlighted in a dark grey finish. Get inside the cabin and the superb refinement levels are immediately obvious with a combination of cloth/fabric (or leather on the flagship model). Intuitive and convenient on board experience continues thanks to the integrated naviga tion with Live Con nectivity (LC) and the Renault keycard with handsfree locking/un locking func tionality. Additional features in clude power win dows (front and rear) and power side mirrors, dual climate con trol, cruise control with speed limiter, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, Radio CD MP3 with a USB port plus fingertip controls located behind the steering wheel. Constantly connected via satellite, the LCsystempicksuptrafficupdateswithroute optimisation of any traffic congestion (accidents and road works for example) and proactively proposes a modified route

While spacious enough up front in the two models driven at launch, I felt leg space for the rear passengers to be rather compro mised but this may well be addressed in the sedan versions, alas not verified though. The top of the range model is the GT Turbo (162kW/340Nm) priced at R329 900, GTLine Turbo (97kW/205Nm) withaticketprice of R279 900, andthebaselev el offering at R249 900 (81kW/205Nm) while all share the same DNA (and great looks), individu ally they address cus tomer’s expectations in a very different way. This may come as a surprise but that particular 97kW turbocharged motor offer ing max torque of 205Nm (available be tween 20003000rpm) is of only 1.2litre capacity, improved even more thanks to its overboost function (peak torque at 225Nm), definitely outperforming the 1.4 –litre turbo it replaces by some margin. This represents an improve ment of 14% compared tothe previous1.4Tur bo engine (6.3li tres/100km, 145g CO./ km). Even though the new Turbo 97kW engine comes packed with cuttingedge tech nologies, Renault engineers have kept in mind the importance of lowering maintenance costs. One of the key elements underscoring this is the replacement of the expensive cambelt of outgoing models with a timing chain setup that appar ently requires no maintenance during the lifetime of the car. Further spirited performance can be had from the halo Megane aka the GT Turbo. Boasting the same good looks of its siblings, andthensome. A

PIETERMARITZBURG institution is the best way to describe the success of PMB Girls’ High School on the hockey field and its contribution to the KZN capital as a whole. Hockey has been an integral part of the school for decades, and its success is exemplified by the national and provincial players to have come out of the Alexandra Road establishment. Anne Davel and Audrey Mayne in

the 1950s and 60s; Shelagh Bowness, Eileen Fourie, May Titlestad in the late 60s and most of the 1970s; Carryn Bentley, Karen Roberts and Heidi Oosthuizen in the 1980s up to the turn of the 20th Century; Kara Stella, Celia Evans, Tracy Bestall, Eloise Miskey and Taryn de Winnaar post the Millennium have all worn the green and gold, while countless numbers have played for the province at junior and senior level. are the SA-capped players that immediately come to mind amongst former GHS scholars canvassed by the Fever. Some are married and have taken their husbands’ names but were initially known on the hockey field by their maiden names, while others are not GHS Old Girls but contributed enormously to the school as teachers and coaches. Audrey Mayne (now Laidlaw) and Shelagh Bowness and Karen Roberts wereSAcaptainsintheirheyday, while retired deputy principal Bowness’s contribution was honoured by the school’s Greenfields Astro Turf being named the Shelagh Bowness Field. Taryn de Winnaar is the current, long-time first team coach and what has been especially notable since the country’s independence in 1994, is the number of players who do not come from a traditional hockey culture that have been attracted to the sport at GHS and gone on to excel as SA Schools’ representatives. And no mention of GHS hockey could be made without noting the priceless contribution that ex-SA Varsities left wing Janet Edwards has made to KZN Inland hockey as an administrator. The GHS first team of 2014 have continued the long line of champion teams by winning the Parklane Superspar A League in the KZN midlands for the umpteenth time in the school’s history,
