CLEANUP operation to rid the city of its filth has been taken up by many businesses, organizations and individuals in Pietermaritzburg and will be their commitment on Friday, 18 July as their 67 minutes for Mandela Day. The cleanup was initiated by the Msunduzi Municipality as their effort to help clean the streets in Pietermaritzburg and remain committed to Mayor Chris Ndlela’s State of the City Address held recently. At a recent business breakfast hosted by the municipality, deputy director general of the department of environmental affairs, Mark Gordon, said that Pietermaritzburg has been declared one of the dirtiest cities by Cabinet a few weeks ago. Gordon said that as a part of an initiative to cleanupthecountryasawhole, thedepartment have targeted cities in the country to clean it up. “It [Pietermaritzburg] is certainly dirtier than some other cities. The face of Pietermaritzburg has deteriorated over the years. What was once a beautiful, clean city is now riddled with filth at almost every corner,” he said. He said that the department is working with Pietermaritzburg on several interventions, including finalizing their Integrated Waste Management Plan and some recycling initiatives in the district. Gordon said that the department was promoting a cleanup across the country as part of the 67 minutes campaign. “We want to address the issues of waste and we are calling on all leaders to take up the task at hand and help get their cities clean.” While the Mandela Day cleanup that many businesses have latched on to is a step in the right direction, Gordon said that a more sustainable plan needs to be put in place in every city. Ndlelaemphasizedthatthepeopleofthecity need to take ownership of the space that they occupy, whether it is the area in front of your driveway at home or your

business backyard. He further urged people to take work together with the municipality to keep the city clean. “We know that the 67 minutes campaign is not enough, but it is a start,” he said. Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business director, Melanie Veness, said that she believes that it is time for people to invest in the city and work together. “We [PCB] are determined to work in partnership with the municipality to get Pietermaritzburg to the state that a capital city should be in. “We don’t want to be on the sidelines, we want to make a difference,” said Veness. Gordon said that if residents want to contributetokeepingthecityclean, theyshould get involved in a local initiative in their ward, school, community, business or mall. “Businesses must be proactive and more responsible. We have asked the city to be vigilant with enforcement and compliance monitoring, there appears to be some apathy and complacency from various stakeholders.” If you are participating in a cleanup for Mandela Day, send your pictures to nicole@pmbfever.co.za

Bail for Smith murder accused >> Judge grants R1500 bail as outraged friends and family watched from the gallery

Natal Carbineer sentries stand at the Delville Wood Cross during a service commemorating the battle of Delville Wood at the Garden of Remembrance on Sunday. The battle was the most devastating involving South African troops in France during Word War 1. The cross is made of wood taken from one of the very few trees left standing in a muddy wasteland once it was over, and weeps sap around the time of the memorial every year.

HE accused murderer of Jake Smith, Siboniso Edward Dlamini (28), appeared in the Pietermaritzburg MagistratesCourtyesterdayforhisbailapplication. Dlamini, a taxi driver, stood before the magistrate in a packed courtroom filled with Smith’s family and friends. Hanging his head, face to the ground and eyes closed, Dlamini was granted bail of R1 500. Outraged members watched from the gallery as Magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde granted Dlamini bail, even though the investigating officer (IO)confirmed that it was not his first offence. The IO asked that bail be denied for fear of Dlamini’s safety.

Dlamini is to stay in his father’s care in Impendle and not to interfere with the case in any way. Family and friends expressed their disappointment about bail being granted saying that it was “so pathetic” and claiming the bail amount was not much at all. Some even asked ifthatiswhatalifeisworthtothejusticesystem. “I cannot believe that he was granted bail andforthatamount.ImeanIgotaspeedingfine for R1 500,” said Kurt Volmink. Volmink said that his brother, Robin, who was Smith when he was stabbed, is “not doing well at all” and is still traumatized. Ndawonde said that she did not believe that there was a need to oppose bail given the fact that Dlamini is to be in his father’s care. The case has been remanded to 16 September to allow the state to finalize their investigations.

MSUNDUZI Municipal Mayor Chris Ndlela announced last Friday that the new Whistleblower Hotline will be open to the public as of Friday, 25 July. The hotline is for concerned citizens of Pietermaritzburg to report corruption, fraud and misappropriation within the municipality. “The launch of this hotline was delayed but this was to root out all the teething problems. Now we are all systems go,” said Ndlela. He added that the service charges had been taken away and all obstacles preventing people from reporting crime for fear of being victimized resolved and taken out. “This is our way of acting in the best interests of the city. We need everyone’s participation to make this work,” said Ndlela.

With the possibly armed man on the loose, the ER24 paramedic was yesterday hailed for her tireless efforts in resuscitating the wounded policeman, who had been stabbed in the chest. The drama unfolded late on Sunday night inside the city’s central police station, the Pietermaritzburg (Loop Street) police station as a policeman checked the cells there. As he approached the cells, it’s believed a suspect wanted in connectionwithanarmedrobbery in the capital city in June, stabbed the 48-year-old policeman, warrant officer B Zondi, and allegedly managed to wrestle the cell keys away from him. The suspect is believed to have opened the door of his cell and bolted into the police station, which sprawls over three floors. As the prisoner ran between offices and different levels in the

ECENTLY, every time I hear the news or read the paper it’s always about someone dying or being murdered. What is happening in PMB? Usually, we have always been dubbed as “Sleepy Hollow” and yet of late, we have become a city of rage murders, kidnappings and high profile police

A ratepayer’s story IN reply to the mayor’s State of the City Address, the workers’ allege that the city was built by them, repudiating the first citizen’s version of the good story. The workers seem to have amnesia. From February to March, 2010, munici pal workers elected to go on strike and for well over eight days, our streets were characterised by mounds of rubbish. Amidst the strike, 3500 visiting athletes participated in the Postnet

investigations. In my opinion, society has lost its respect for human life and people seem to think if someone annoys them, they have the right to take their life. The senseless murders of Jake Smith, the lady who was stabbed at Liberty Midlands Mall, and the killing of a young father in Raisethorpe over missing loaves of bread should be taken seriously. Perpetrators need to feel the full extent of the law to teach them that human life is not just something you take for granted. Imaginetheheartacheandtraumafor families after such carnage.

Weekend Witness Marathon and observed our filthy city. Streets were trashed and refuse bins strewn onto pavements. Langalibalele Street, outside the legislature building, was an eyesore. Our city was in ruins covered in heaps of garbage. Workers showed no sympathy. Despite a moratorium on overtime pay, they milked the financially ailing city for hundreds of thousands in overtime claims. Bodyguards cashed in on overtime pay too. The action of the workers can never be condoned. No doubt that corruption, greed, fraud and mismanagement were the last straw

Most importantly, we need to come together as a city and engage in prayer because God knows this city. Wearealleasytargetsandwhoknows what could happen if we accidentally cut a queue or if someone is just having a bad day and says “I think I am going to kill the next person who makes me angry.” That next person could be anyone of us, because I bet when all these people lost their lives to these horrid crimes, they didn’t wake up that morning thinking “today could be the last day of my life.” SHAMAINE RAJCUAR RAISETHORPE

that forced the city to be placed under administration. To date, no officials were singled out despite former Premier Zweli Mkhize promising that “some were going to fall on their swords” for the collapse. On the contrary, officials from 2010 have been redeployed by the ANC the rul ing party does not believe in firing cadres nor does the party believe cadres are incompetent. It’s time to deAfricanize Africa FOR the past 200 years, we as Africans havebeenperceivedtobeapeopleofgreat humility, hospitality and Ubuntu. Unfortunately, these diverse cultural values have, to a certain extent, left our continent to be exploited primarily by the West. For generations, Africans have suffered and have been exploited by western oligarchies; over their rich minerals, unfair and sometimes forced labour and their humanity in general.

and Sisonke are brought to work in Msunduzi. It is widely alleged that the culprits who do the recruiting are the MEC for Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, and municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi. If the truth be spoken, then workers must be bold to admit that the city was saved by a band of workers with a strong work ethic, workers who remain diligent and loyal; workers who are to date ignored for promotion because they refuse to sell theirsoulsandcompromisetheirprinciples they remain integral to serve loyally up to this day.

One would like to believe that after significant revolutions throughout history, not only in the African continent but in variouspartsoftheworld, thisexploitation would have ended, but unfortunately reality suggests otherwise. Even though our economy is growing rapidly, second only to Asia, almost half of our population is living under poverty and this for me is mind boggling. As Africans, we own almost sixty percent of the world’s productive land but ironically our conti nent is riddled with unemployment, poverty, under development and a large majority of people are uneducated. InorderforAfricanstorealize“truefree dom and liberation” as a people, and more so as a continent, we need to deAfricanize our continent in terms of our values. We need to be receptive and show the spirit of hospitality and introduce policy which will benefit firstly our continent and hopefully the next generation of people. It is alleged that these employees have been blatantly told by senior municipal staff, in the presence of heavyweights, that the policy of the municipality is to get ridofIndianstaffastherearejusttoomany Indians in the Msunduzi Municipality’s employ. But, then there are just too many Indi ans in Msunduzi Municipality that are reliable ratepayers too? Donate blood this Mandela Day

NQOBILE MTOLO

>>nqobile@pmbfever.co.za

THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) Midlands branch is calling on eligible blood donors to come on board and donate blood on Mandela Day this Friday. SANBS Midlands branch public relations and marketing practitioner Khulekani Zuma said that the Midlands blood stock levels have not changed since last week Friday. “SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. However at the moment, we have only a one day supply of bloodstockavailableinKZN,andjustlessthan a three-day supply on a national level,” said Zuma. He urged more eligible donors to donate blood during this holiday season. “We are faced with a challenge because there are blood donors who are on holiday and many also have flu now that we have entered the cold season. We are hoping that on Mandela Day, people will come out in numbers and donate blood because there are people who need it. “With Mandela Day coming up on Friday, 18 July, we are appealing to the community of Pietermaritzburg and the surrounding areas to spend their 67 minutes donating blood. SANBS will be having a mobile blood drive at the Liberty Midlands Mall on Friday from 9am until 6pm at the Pick n Pay court,” said Zuma. If you want to donate blood you need to make sure that you are between the ages of 16 and 65 years, weigh 50kg or more, are in good health and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.

OMORROW a group from iThembalethu Academy for the Performing Arts will be performing their third and last stage play, SoundGaze: Moving Images of Marie in Woyzeck, in Zimbabwe, Harare. The group will then be heading back to South Africa on Friday morning. Last week, the group had performed at the multi-media theatre production at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The play is adapted from Georg Buchner’s stage play Woyzeck. It is based on the true story of a soldier who murdered his lover over infidelity. The play features Zimbabwean actors Michael Kudakwashe and Edgar Langeveldt. The play is directed by iThembalethu’s communications manager Juanita Chitepo. Chitepo said that she discov-

DJ Ryan will be at Tiger Tiger night tomorrow night. Born and raised in Durban, DJ Ryan has always had a passion for music since the early days of his youth. His early exposure to the DJ cu lture was introduced by his older brother, who led him to generate a lot of interest in the art of deejaying.

At the age of 16, Ryan began deejaying at house parties and club gigs. He created and distributed mix tapes to his friends and colleagues, wanting to make sure that the public got to hear his unique talent. Ryan soon competed in the ‘East CoastRadio’and‘MTN’battleofthe

DJs competitions, which had been judged by South African superstar DJ Ready D, being crowned the winner of each in the Hip-Hop category. In 2012, Ryan was crowned the ‘5FM Ultimix at 6’ DJ competition winner. He had beaten over 150 entrants and had entered the next level of his DJ career.

Winning the competition, Ryan was awarded a residency on South Africa’s largest radio station, 5FM, for the country’s most tuned in radio slot: ‘The Fresh Drive’ with celebrity radio DJ Fresh’ (Thato Sikwane). Doors will open at 8pm, entry fee is R30 before 10pm and R50 after 10pm.

The group performed five shows in Grahamstown. Speaking to the Maritzburg Fever before the Harare trip, Chitepo said that she looked forward to performing in front of people who are passionate about theatre. She said that she is ecstatic that the play which the group performed is now being studied by a university doctoral student. “She is studying the play for the reason that it incorporates multi-media technology, because the debates in theatrical circles is that theatre is a dying entity due to strides in technology,” she said.

Red Dot award for new Mercedes V-Class

THE new MercedesBenz VClass received the Red Dot Award: Product Design in one of the world’s largest product competitions for design quality. FTER 250 days, 3514 km, and just over five million steps, adventurer, conservationist and traveller Grant Christie has completed his solo journey along the South African coastline. TECH TALK

THIS week I have heard a lot of talk regarding compatibility issues with Windows 8.1. Now we have been talking a lot about this operating system in the last few articles and there is a very transparent reason for this - we love it. Every new operating system that gets released comes with a few ‘teething’ issues and to date, Windows 8 has had the least problems. Funny enough, the most common complaint about new operating systems revolves around compatibility with older software. This is ratherironicasMicrosofthasasysteminplacethatsolvesalmostallcompatibility issues, and this system has been present since Windows XP. By right-clicking on any program icon and clicking on the ‘properties’ option, you can change the compatibility settings for the program to run inanenvironmentthatemulatesanyoftheolderoperatingsystems. This allows you to run software that was designed for Windows XP in Windows 8.1. Keeping in mind that Windows 8 was built on the same framework as Windows 7, meaning that Windows 7 applications are fully supported on Windows 8 by design. When we are asked to solve a compatibility problem, nine times out of 10 we can solve this by editing the compatibility settings of the program, the other one is due to errors on theprogramitselfthatwouldhavebeenpresentwhetherthenewsystem was Windows 7 or Windows 8. For more info regarding Windows 8 and compatibility – feel free to speak to any of our in-store reps.

N a step to pave the way for the development of the great talents of thefutureforboththeprovinceand South Africa, 72 of the most promising young cricketers were selected for six teams which make up the Sunfoil Development squad. During the wrap up of the Sunfoil Township Tournament, which took place at Hilton College recently, 300 gifted young cricketers from KZN, Gauteng, Border, Griqualand West and Western Province played 49 matches in a T20 format. The ultimate goal of all participants was to be selected for the Sunfoil development teams with a view to being considered for the Dolphins Academy in the future. A key element of a successful development programme, run by the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU)andWillowtonGroup, istoprovide disadvantaged youth within the coaching programme an opportunity to showcase their talent in a competitive match environment. “The Sunfoil Township Tournament, which is integral to the overall Township Development Programme, has come a long way over the past seven years, contributing to Cricket South Africa’s vision of cricket being a truly national sport and available to all who want to play it and pursue excellence at all levels of the game,” said Shoaib Moosa, sales and marketing director of Willowton Group. He added that in addition to the players of the day being recognised in the under 15 and under 19 categories, two promising cricketers, Banele Cele and Bayanda Gumbi have been awarded bursaries to attend
