FROM THE QU AR TE RD ECK I wish we could say that we not only had a successful flag raising at the dedication of the Joe Grebe memorial flagpole, but that it also signaled success in raising the balance of the monies needed to satisfy that lacking 35 % .

We are very sorry that all the wishing and contacting has not produced, in the interval since the last issue of the Quarterdeck Review, enough funds to complete the vital contracts of heating or lighting so that work on many volunteer or low cost items could be finished in lighted and heated quarters. It would also allow for public viewing of the exciting interior with comfort and visibility - always a stimulating assist in fund raising.

The general appearance of the whole exterior area surrounding the building and forecourt was greatly improved by the Oregon National Guard and its 1249th Engineer Battalion. A most worthy assist - appreciated by the Museum Trustees as well as the general public. The sidewalk engineers testified to the worthiness of doing a job requiring the heavy equipment they skillfully handled on a project beneficial to the whole area.

Those who have visited and viewed the interior of the new structure, on the 'occasion of special tours, have been ecstatic in their enthusiasm and emphatic in their remarks that "it must be finished", "an exciting and inspirational interior," etc., etc!

Help us do it. Help us make the telling and relating of our Northwest and Columbia River Basin's nautical heritage as great as the thrilling interior of the Museum building.

Museum Vice President Ron Honeyman presided on August 30th when the 75-foot ship's mast flagpole at the new building site was dedicated to the late Joe Grebe, founder of Northwest Marine Iron Works, a Portland ship repair firm.

Mrs. Gail Zavin and Mrs. Jean Peterson, daughters of Mr. Grebe, were on hand to represent the family, while Mr. Arthur Farr represented Northwest Marine.

Designed to resemble a square-rigger's mast, the whitepainted, steel pole was built and donated to the Museum by Northwest Marine Iron Works. It is stepped in the center of a 30-foot terazzo compass rose with the traditional fleur-delis poinLing Loward NorLh. The mast and its base will eventually be surrounded by a large plaza in front of the new building. With a total of six halyards attached to the masthead, yard, and gaff, it will fly not only the National Ensign and the Museum's blue and white house flag, but also the national flags of visiting ships and dignitaries, international code signals, and decorative pennants. On the day of the dedication, the signal letters OVF and NWMI were flown, spelling out "Thanks, Northwest Marine Iron Works" in the International Code.

• ANNUAL MEETING & DINNER The Astoria Golf and Country Club will once again be the site of the Museum's Annual Dinner and Membership Meeting, to be held this year on Friday, November 3rd. As in previous years, the evening will include a memorable dinner, preceded by a no-host cocktail hour. There will be a short business meeting, at which six Trustees will be elected to four-year terms on the Board. Captain Adrian Raynaud, Master Mariner and marine surveyor from Seattle, will be the guest speaker.

This year's event promises to be better than ever. Members and friends are urged to attend, meet Captain Raynaud, and enjoy a thoroughly delightful evening.

Facilities for the dinner are limited, so reservations will be necessary. Invitations were mailed in early October.

Those wishing to attend should return their reservation cards with remittance by October 31st.

OOPS! The photograph above, from an original by Towne & Moore, of Portland (Or.), came to the Museum from the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Maine. Here's what Lewis & Dryden's Marine History of the Pacific Northwest (1895) has to say about the incident portrayed: "The steamer Ocklahama was the victim of a peculiar accident in Portland. She was alongside the British bark Alliance, June 17th (1886), for the purpose of moving her away from the dock, but, before leaving, the bark careened and came over on top of the steamboat, smashing the pilot house, hog chains and smokestack, and damaging the steamer to the extent of several thousand dollars. Captain H.A. Emken of the Ocklahama was in the pilot house at the time, and seemingly by a miracle escaped comparatively unhurt. Despite the immense weight, the steamer supported the bark until she was righted. The Alliance was mulcted for the damages to the Ocklahama, as her owners had claimed that she would stand alone without ballast."

CLASS VISIT The first school group to visit the Museum in September was this Columbia River Studies class, composed of 5th, 6th, and 7th graders from Star of the Sea School in Astoria.

Clipboards at the ready, they moved among the exhibits in search of answers to questions that had been assigned by their teacher. Along the way, they discovered a good deal more. When it was time to leave, many said they would like to come back. We hope they will.

RICHARD FENCSAK JOINS MUSEUM STAFF

An addition to the professional staff of the Museum was made in July when Richard Fencsak assumed the newly created position of Education Coordinator. Mr. Fencsak, a former elementary school teacher, has responsibility for development of education programs, docent training, and Museum -school relations.

Each year, school groups from throughout the North west visit the Museum. By providing teachers with pre-visit packets of information about the Museum and suggested study topics related to the Museum's exhibits, and by arranging tours according to grade level and interest, the Education Coordinator will ensure a meaningful and re warding experience for visiting classes . He will also meet with educators at their schools to increase their awareness of the Museum's value as an educational resource .

Mr. Fencsak is a graduate of the University of Oregon.

Before joining the Museum staff, he was a seventh grade teacher in Cloverdale, Oregon.

One would not expect a maritime museum to be a training ground for the National Guard, but during the last two weeks of July that's exactly what it was. Company D, 1249th Engineering Battalion, Oregon Army National Guard, arrived at the new Museum building site early on a Saturday morning with trucks , loaders, bulldozers, and a can -do spirit and proceeded to move the earth- about 1,500 cubic yards of it .

Since the start of construction of the new building, the need to raise the grade level surrounding the structure had been apparent. It would require hundreds of cubic yards of clean fill, all of which would have to be trucked in. In short, it would be expensive.

The problem was resolved by the National Guard .

Company D was assigned the project as a training exercise during its annual active duty period. When they completed their work, they left behind a job well done , and took with them the well -earned thanks of all hands at the Museum.

• CAPTAIN RAYNAUD TO HIGHLIGHT MEETING Museum members and their guests will have a rare opportunity to meet and hear one of the West Coast's most interesting and engaging seafaring men when Captain Adrian F. Raynaud , Master Mariner in sail and steam, speaks at the Annual Meeting on November 3rd. Captain Raynaud, who has been active as an independent marine surveyor with headquarters in Seattle for more than 30 years, will relate highlights from his long and colorful career.

Few men in the Pacific Northwest can match Captain Raynaud's experience. In 1907, as a boy of 12, he went to work as an apprentice in the San Francisco sail loft of Havi side, Withers & Davis. A few years later he went to sea as cabin boy in the schooner Bee, then joined the barkentine Lahaina, rising from cabin boy to able seaman. In 1915 he signed on as AB in the Sewall -built steel four -mast barque Erskine M . Phelps. His next berth was in the barque Edward Sewall, a sister ship to the Phelps, where he rose to Second Mate. He was First Mate in the bar ken tines Russell Haviside and Forest Dream, after which he bought the small schooner Ruth, engaging her in the Tahiti trade. He later served as First Mate in the five -mast schooner Undaunted.

In 1925 Capt:ain Raynaud went into steam , taking a berth as quartermaster in the Hawaiian American steamship Dakotan . Ov er the ensuing years he shipped as Third, Second and First Mate in numerous vessels of the Pacific Mail Steamship Co., the American Hawaiian Steamship Co., and States Ste amship Company. His first command in steam was the S. S . Maine of the Quaker Line . In the late thirties he joined t he American Mail Line, serving as Master of a number of th eir vessels before becoming Seattle port captain for the lin.e in 1942. He left American Mail in 194 7 to establish as a :marine surveyor , in which profession he remains active tod..ay .

The Captain is no stranger to maritime history circles

on the West Coast. He has long been active m the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society. He has participated in a number of important "saves" of historically sigaificant West Coast vessels, among them the Falls of Clyde, now restored at Honolulu, and the wooden, three -mast schooner C.A. Thayer, in which he sailed as Master on her last voyage from Puget Sound to San Francisco in 1957.

The Museum needs your help.

• THE NEW BUILDING If there is one question that is most often asked of us at the Museum, it must be, "When will the new building be open?" It is not surprising that the question has lately been heard with increasing frequency.

Construction has not moved substantially forward in several months, due to a lack of sufficient funds to proceed with the very expensive interior work. Though no landscaping has been done (the Board has determined that the building should be completed first), the structure appears ready to open. A great deal has to be accomplished, however, before that can come about.

AL this point, approximately $650,000 in additional funds are needed to complete the new building and prepare it for opening. The Director, Trustees, and staff of the Museum are devoting a great deal of their time and energies to finding ways to secure this funding, in large amounts and small, from individuals, foundations, business, and government.

That the new building will be completed is sure. That it be completed as soon as possible is imperative. The problems created by inadequate facilities for exhibits, education programs, storage, and curatorial functions grow more pressing with each passing day.
