Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) is an international trade association that promotes the interests of the Zero Emissions Ship Technology industry, through communications, policy and regulatory support

FACING THE ZERO

EMISSIONS FUTURE

Founded in March 2019, Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) activities include: » Representing Zero Emissions

Ship Technology (ZEST) projects and technology providers in the shipping industry. » Increasing awareness and understanding within shipping stakeholders of readilyavailable cutting-edge technology through events and media publication. » Influencing regulators and policymakers at national and international levels to introduce legislation that necessitates and facilitates the uptake of ZEST. » Creating a platform for ZEST providers to collaborate on projects for real-life zeroemissions vessels. » Supporting regulators and industry in assuring commercial shipping reduces emissions on a steep trajectory in-line with 1.5 degrees warming, set out in the

Paris Agreement. Full membership of our organisation is strictly reserved only to technology providers who can guarantee that their project or technology produces zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the ship-level, with minimal upstream environmental impacts. We also accept associate membership to trade associations that comply with ZESTAs objectives and bodies committed to achieving zero GHG emissions in future through collaboration with the membership.

Currently, our membership consists of more than 30 organisations spread across 17 countries in Europe, Asia and North America.

We support all technologies required to make zero-emissions shipping possible. These include hydrogen fuel cells, marine batteries, wind propulsion, energy storage systems (ESS) and innovative energy efficiency measures, as well as accompanying services in safety, design, finance, ownership and system integration.

From industry leaders such as PowerCell, Nedstack and SPBES to disruptive start-ups including Econowind and Evolve Hydrogen, our membership boasts unique experience of real-life deployment of maritime zero

emissions vessels. Because innovative zero-emissions solutions are complimentary and pursue a common purpose, our association fuels collaboration, forging links between members and enabling the industry to act together to overcome regulatory, political and competitive challenges.

With more than 400 vessels fitted with zero-emissions solutions today and the market growing at a dizzying pace of more than 400% per year, ZESTAs offers clarity and certainty in times of rapid change and disruption. Our strict membership criteria ensure that we only support technology that enables true zero emissions vessels. These principles provide secure futureproofing while eliminating the potential for greenwashing.

LARGE MARKET

ZESTAs operates in a wide range of maritime markets including short sea shipping, offshore service vessels, in-port infrastructure and transport, inland freight vessels, passenger ferries, Arctic/Antarctic vessels, cruise vessels and assisting the oil and gas industry to transition away from fossil fuels.

Zero emission technologies are ready today and the shipping industry is ready to change, but support is required from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), regional and national policy makers to lead with strong clear regulations. ZESTAs has actively engaged with IMO decisionmakers since our founding, with Secretary General Madadh MacLaine regularly advising key decision makers throughout the industry. In July 2019, she participated in the ICCT seminar on research and development topics for zero emissions shipping and implementation of GHG emissions reductions policy that fed into the IMRB put before the IMO MEPC by international shipowner associations.

In October of that year, she represented ZESTAs as a guest of t he Malaysian delegation to support their commitment to marine hydrogen fuel and is negotiating the set up an International Innovation Incubator. At the IMO’s ISWG GHG 6 in November 2019, ZESTAs members presented on technology readiness, combining their respective technologies to prove that a zero-emissions transatlantic crossing is technically possible and in May 2021, Madadh attended ISWG GHG 8.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

ZESTAs’ message to regulators is that zero is possible in-line with the timeframe dictated by the IPCC. For example, we are on a technology pathway to have a zero-emissions VLCC on the water by 2023. While a full fleet change by 2023 is unfeasible, trans-oceanic demonstrators by 2023 are achievable given the right regulatory landscape. We already have the technology. If we have the regulations that support the market uptake of that technology in 2023, we can have a zero-emissions fleet by 2045, thus keeping us in-line with IPCC recommendations for warming not exceeding 1.5 degrees.

Our long-term strategic vision is to initiate a cascading relationship of policy, regulation and market forces that result in a zero-emissions industry norm. Using the combined voice and knowledge of our membership to build on current policy, we begin to see regulations that reduce financial risk and push demand.

Attractive financing options and low-interest loans that will increase demand and encourage R&D, in turn enabling technology producers to tap into economies of scale. Once this has been reached, policy makers and regulators can enforce stricter regulations making ZE the industry norm.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

As well as our policy and regulatory activities, ZESTAs is active in regular webinars and events concerning zero emissions shipping and are organising the “SHIP ZERO° - Charging to True Zero” event in Glasgow on 1- 3 November 2021, coinciding with COP26.

On the education/information front, we are building the “ZEST Academy”, an online facility where industry stakeholders can access in-depth information, including; safety, applications, use cases, and more around technologies available today.

Please reach out to ZESTAs Secretary General Madadh MacLaine for further information on the SHIP ZERO° event, the association, ZES technology and projects. zestas.org
