Portland State University enjoys many successes such as our US News & World Report ranking as a top 10 up-and-coming national university for two consecutive years. Our entering freshman class of fall 2013 is one of the largest, most academically accomplished and diverse in our history. And our new institutional Board of Trustees will convene in 2014 and lead the university into the future.

Thanks to your generosity, we raised a record $29.3 million in fiscal year 2013—up from $12.8 million just three years ago. In addition to the $29.3 million raised, we received an $8 million pledge from alumnus Rick Miller (MBA ’91) and his wife, Erika Miller, for the School of Business Grow With Us building campaign. Thanks to their lead gift and other generous contributions, we have raised over $14 million toward our $20 million fundraising goal for the project.

PSU is also engaged in two other fundraising campaigns. The Viking Pavilion and Academic Center building campaign has raised over $10.1 million of its $25 million goal, including a $5 million anonymous gift. And the $50 million Creating Futures campaign has raised over $22.5 million for student scholarships—including a scholarship gift of $750,000 for high-achieving students in our thriving University Honors Program.

These campaigns reflect our commitment to student success, from helping close the gap between need and aid to creating facilities that will give us state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting space.

We continue to face significant challenges, from funding shortfalls to emerging competition from online education providers. But, as one of the nation’s leading urban research universities, Portland State University is in a position to set new standards for how best to educate students in the 21st century.

RENOVATIONS SERVE STUDENTS AND CITY A much-needed makeover of PSU’s outdated athletics facility will boast an academic center for students, classrooms for health and physical education, and a 5,500-seat pavilion for university and civic events.

“Our existing building is about 50 years old and deferred maintenance costs are high. It’s time to renovate and open it up for greater use,” said Torre Chisholm, athletics director.

PSU will match $20 million of $24 million in bonds approved by the Oregon Legislature in 2013. Gifts already exceed $10.1 million and include $5 million from an anonymous donor, $2 million from the Peter W. Stott Foundation, and major gifts from many other generous donors including Tim and Mary Boyle, and the Oregon Community Foundation.

“This is public and private partnership at its best,” said Peter Stott, fundraising campaign chair. “Our community saw the importance of the project, the Legislature recognized it, and together we will meet the needs of our students and serve our community.”

BUSINESS SCHOOL PLANS EXPANSION Alumnus Rick Miller (MBA ’91) and his wife, Erika Miller, are helping transform the School of Business Administration. Their $8 million lead gift—along with state bonds and generous gifts from others—will help upgrade the school’s physical space to meet its high-quality educational program and serve its 3,500 students.

“Rick is a great example of the success that is possible with a degree from PSU,” said Dean Scott Dawson. “The generosity and leadership that he and Erika are providing will help shape the School of Business for years to come.”

A 42,000 square-foot addition on the north side of the current business school building is shown in this drawing. Renovation and expansion will add classrooms, project rooms, computer labs, and areas for students to gather and study.

A highly successful entrepreneur who founded the Avamere Group in 1995, Rick has given back to PSU in many ways. He has served as a School of Business executive in residence, mentored students and alumni, and now co-chairs the school’s building campaign with Trailblazer Foods President Rob Miller.

“One of the aspects of Portland State’s MBA program that attracted me as a student was the school’s deep connection to the business community and its extensive alumni network,” said Rick. “Investing in the building is a strong vote of confidence for PSU’s business program.”

PSU operates the largest business school in Oregon.

Its unbeatable urban location and outstanding

programs attract a broad range of students—from incoming freshmen to mid-career professionals— and have brought exponential growth.

The Oregon Legislature approved $40 million in bonds in 2013 to help renovate and expand the building. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2015 and be completed by fall 2016.

PSU has already raised more than $14 million of its $20 million goal for the project. Along with the Millers, the project’s many contributors include Fahad al Athel class of ‘75, MBA ‘01, Phil Bogue, Tim and Mary Boyle, Bob and Sharon Miller, The Standard, and Tektronix.

CREATING FUTURES RAISES SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS

An engaged nine-member committee of business and community leaders is steering the Creating Futures scholarship campaign and has raised over $22.5 million for student scholarships, representing 45 percent of the $50 million goal.

“By capitalizing on a vibrant urban setting and creating opportunities for students to interact with their community, PSU is developing the next generation of leaders and driving economic development in this region,” write co-chairs Tom Fink (class of ’71) and Pete Nickerson. “We are co-chairing this campaign because we believe in this vision and we value the access to higher education that scholarships provide.”

The campaign has received many seven-figure and other generous gifts, including planned and anonymous gifts. These donors recognize the importance of assisting students as they achieve a university degree. ALUMNI MARCIA SCHULMERICH AND JOHN SALMON GIVE A SCHOLARSHIP GIFT OF A LIFETIME John Salmon (’67, MA ’72) and Marcia Schulmerich (class of ’69) are leading examples of alumni who are committed to scholarships.

They graduated from PSU with biology degrees and built accomplished careers in health care administration. Along the way, this husbandand-wife team began giving back to PSU by providing scholarships for biology students.

In 2011, they made a gift of stock to PSU to create the Salmon and Schulmerich Endowed Scholarship for biology undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students preparing for health care careers.

“Portland State gave us the education and opportunities we needed to be successful,” said John. “It only seems right to pass along those opportunities to the next generation.”

In 2013, John and Marcia declared their intention to leave a significant portion of their estate to their endowed scholarship. When the bequest is fulfilled, it will provide full-tuition scholarships for nearly a dozen students each year.

Morgan Damm, of Oregon City, is a 2013 recipient of the Salmon and Schulmerich Endowed Scholarship. After completing her studies, she would like to open her own veterinary practice and horse rescue operation.

DONORS FOCUS ON FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS Irving Levin and Stephanie Fowler believe deeply in the power of education to transform lives.

“You can’t fix the whole world, so you have to focus and it’s best to focus on things you care a lot about,” said Irving. “Education is the single biggest passion we have.”

With commitments to PSU scholarships totaling $1 million, the couple’s powerful focus is on students who are the first in their family to attend college. By guiding students along a new path, Irving and Stephanie are changing the legacies of entire families.

Irving Levin and Stephanie Fowler believe that education drives social and economic mobility. They provide scholarships for students who are the first in their family to attend college.

“When Stephanie and I were thinking about how to invest in education, we had a particular approach. We wanted to help exceptional people without the financial means to go to college,” said Irving. “To Portland State’s credit, they helped us craft a program so we could achieve that goal.”

Since 2005, Irving and Stephanie’s non-profit, the Renaissance Foundation, has helped more than 90 undergraduates—the first in their family to go to college—attend PSU.

Their support doesn’t stop with undergraduates.

They also want to inspire the next generation of teachers, but are concerned that burdensome debt discourages some from pursuing teaching as a career. In 2012, they created a scholarship in the Graduate School of Education. By 2016, PSU expects this program to assist at least 30 students.

“Stephanie often says it takes only one relationship to inspire a young student,” said Irving. “If this scholarship encourages firstgeneration college graduates to enter teaching, it is an investment worth making.”

This spirit of generosity made the couple a natural choice to receive PSU’s Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy in 2012. Although they avoid public recognition, they chose to accept this award in part to inspire others to consider giving to scholarships. They are delighted to share just how rewarding the experience is for them.

“We get so much out of the relationships we have with the students we’ve met so far,” said Irving.

In fact, they would love to do more. “My dream,” Stephanie said, “is filling a ballroom with 400 students and everybody telling their stories about where they’ve been.”

Larrita Riggs is one of many remarkable students to benefit from the generosity of Irving Levin and Stephanie Fowler. Larrita grew up in Arizona, in a home without running water or electricity.

“Through high school, I did my homework with a flashlight when my family went to sleep,” she said.

“As the first in my family to leave the reservation, I asked my grandfather what he thought,” she said. “In our Dinè language, he said I was carrying a torch of fire through a canyon, an unknown place, for our people to follow.”

Larrita received a scholarship funded by Levin and Fowler and graduated in 2013 with a degree in Child and Family Studies from the School of Social Work. Now she is the learning center coordinator at Dinè College in Arizona and plans to enter graduate school to study tribal politics. “Without the scholarship, I would have felt very stressed,” she said. “Opportunity is what it takes to build strong, successful young people—not genetics or pedigree.”

HONORS PROGRAM BUILDS EXCELLENCE With $1 million from the Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust for scholarships, internships, seminars, and a new laboratory, the University Honors Program is capturing the attention of highachieving students from across the country and around the globe.

Small class sizes, dedicated student housing, and a thesis requirement create a small liberal arts college atmosphere within the larger university.

“I was going to go to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo,” said Dale Herr, an environmental science major in the University Honors Program. “But then I visited PSU and I loved it because it’s right in the middle of downtown. I applied to Honors, then I got a scholarship and that’s why I was able to come here.”

Dale enjoys the Honors Program. “I like how it integrates the real world into everything we’re studying. Everything relates back to Portland,” she said. “We did some work with Geographic Information Systems. We did a soil lab where we mapped the soil samples and land cover type.”

Plus, she values the program’s resources. “I get emails from professors all the time about internships. There are a lot of opportunities to learn here.”

From San Francisco, Dale Herr enrolled in the University Honors Program after visiting PSU’s urban campus and receiving a scholarship.

Journal of Cardiology. Graduates have become immunologists, physical therapists, professional writers and even, in one case, a German translator for the TV series, “Grimm.” The good news is spreading—enrollment has grown by more than a third to 612 students in the past year.

Several donors helped match the Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust’s $500,000 scholarship challenge, including Melanie Billings-Yun (class of ’76), the Juan Young Trust, Northrup Corporation, and Wessinger Foundation.

For high-achievers, scholarship support may be the deciding factor in selecting PSU. And once they are attracted to Portland, they are more likely to stay and contribute their talents and skills to this region.

SERBIAN STUDENT PURSUES PHYSICAL THERAPY In Serbia, Mladen Kolundzija attended a medical high school where he helped patients learn to walk again. His life was uprooted in 2002 when he, his mother, and his brother secured refugee asylum visas and moved to the United States. Now, Mladen majors in health sciences at PSU and works part-time to help support his family. He received a Yaden Family Endowed Scholarship—awarded for the first time in 2013.

“This scholarship not only eases my financial burden but also encourages me to do my best,” said Mladen, who plans to attend graduate school in physical therapy. “Scholarships can make the difference in conquering obstacles students face. Knowing there are people who are willing to help me finish college motivates me and obligates me to be successful.”

College of Urban and Public Affairs alumni David (class of ’70) and Janice (class of ’66) Yaden were the first in their family to earn university degrees. David avoided student loans by living with his parents, working summer jobs, and earning scholarships.

“That was enough in the 1960s to pay for college,” he said. “As I look back, I realize how important it was to graduate without debt. I could concentrate on my studies. After graduation, I could pursue extraordinary experiences that did not pay much but launched me into my career.”

David and Janice enjoyed successful careers in public service, advising high-level elected officials. David formed his own public opinion research firm and Janice is a Mercy Corps manager currently working in Kosovo. Together, they created the Yaden Family Endowed Scholarship for students with academic merit and financial need. The result is CUPA’s largest scholarship award and a legacy of support for students.

ACROSS CAMPUS, DONORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Nancy and Les (class of ’68) Fahey join fellow President’s Circle members at a June reception at President Wiewel’s home. In 2013, they created a planned gift to to endow these accounting and education scholarships. A former PSU Foundation treasurer, Les now serves on the Creating Futures campaign steering committee. He earned his business degree at PSU and he and Nancy value high-quality teaching, so their gift will be shared equally by the School of Business and the Graduate School of Education. During his accounting career, Les hired PSU graduates. “Many of our best performers were PSU alumni,” he notes. “PSU is an outstanding academic institution. It’s where you go when you are serious about getting a practical education.”

Tom (class of ’71) and Marilyn Fink attend the Simon Benson Awards Dinner. Tom grew up in Tillamook and worked in a plywood mill to help pay for college. He and his siblings were the first in their family to graduate—all from PSU. With a successful career in insurance, Tom built a new legacy for his children. He co-chairs the Creating Futures campaign committee and is a past chair of the PSU Foundation board. Tom and Marilyn created an endowed scholarship with a planned gift because they know the power of public education to change lives.

Many faculty and staff members express their support for PSU with gifts. Professor Franz Rad made a pledge that will award 53 scholarships to civil and environmental engineering students in the Fariborz Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. “I appreciated receiving academic scholarships while a student at the University of Texas at Austin,” he noted. “With college tuitions increasing steadily, scholarships make it possible for some of our highly qualified students to attend college.”

Sherry Sheng and Spike Wadsworth (MSW ’67) join fellow Vanport Society members at a holiday brunch at President Wiewel’s home. The couple created School of Social Work scholarships for master’s degree students who plan to help disadvantaged families and for Ph.D. candidates headed toward academic research careers. As a PSU student, Spike received a scholarship that allowed him to change careers and move into social work. In gratitude for the generosity he experienced as a student, he and his wife now give back to scholarships at PSU.

GLASS TOWER OPENS ON BROADWAY A new glass tower sparkles on Broadway and extends Portland’s cultural district to campus, thanks to a generous gift from Arlene Schnitzer. Scheduled to open in January 2014, the three-story column will house acting studios, gallery space, and dance studios. The new studios may also help the College of the Arts restore its dance major program in the future.

The project completes recent extensive renovations of Lincoln Hall, home to public concerts, plays, operas, and ballets. Before it was Lincoln Hall, the building was Portland Public School’s Lincoln High School where Arlene and her late husband, Harold Schnitzer, were students.

“The education Harold received in the building led to his strong vision for this city and state, which he loved very much,” said Arlene. “I hope the tower will inspire a continuing vision of great and creative education.”

Arlene’s gift coincided with other inspiring news about the College of the Arts. The former School of Fine and Performing Arts was officially elevated to a college in 2013 and its departments became four schools: the School of Art and Design, the School of Architecture, the School of Music, and the School of Theatre and Film.

This transformation is significant; it allows the schools to compete more effectively for top students and faculty and reflects growing program strength. Some of PSU’s fastest-growing programs reside in this college, including film and graphic design. In 2013, the School of Architecture’s graduate program received national accreditation, paving the way for graduates to be eligible for professional licenses.

LIBRARY RENOVATING STUDENT SPACE In recent University Library surveys, students expressed interest in comfortable seating, collaborative and private study areas, whiteboards, and more areas for laptops and mobile devices. As a result, 5,000 square feet on the library’s third floor is being renovated to reflect these priorities. The library also upgraded its two instruction rooms with new laptops and flexible furniture in 2013. A top fundraising priority for the library is improving space for student use. Gifts from alumni, community members, and a bequest from William Michael Foster (class of ’65) support library renovations.

PARTNER IN PHILANTHROPY Incorporated in 1963, the PSU Foundation is a strong partner in the university’s fundraising success. As an independent organization, the Foundation receives all gifts on behalf of PSU and manages more than $122 million in assets, including more than $44 million in endowed funds.

SIMON BENSON AWARDS DINNER ATTRACTS ALUMNI, SUPPORTERS Foundation trustees Kim Cooper and Ken Thrasher co-chaired PSU’s 2012 Simon Benson Awards Dinner which raised more than $1 million and attracted 1,700 guests. The dinner honored Stephanie Fowler and Irving Levin and Arlene Schnitzer and Jordan Schnitzer for philanthropy and Travis Knight (class of ’98) for alumni achievement. Thanks to a matching grant from the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, event proceeds helped ensure student access to education.

STUDENTS WIN PRIZES A new prize is stimulating creativity, rewarding talent and spotlighting arts education at PSU, thanks to the generosity of Arlene Schnitzer.

“Some of my strongest art mentors were art professors teaching at PSU,” said Arlene. “I wanted to establish this prize to raise awareness about the high quality of art education one receives at PSU.” A jury of community arts advocates and PSU faculty selected two recipients for the Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize,

awarded for the first time in 2013. The prize comes with a first-place award of $5,500 and a second-place award of $4,000.

“My practice is becoming more socially engaged and uses forms that many have a hard time recognizing as art,” said first-place winner Patricia Vazquez Gomez. “Having my work validated through this prize is a powerful encouragement not just to continue working with energy, passion, and conviction, but also to pursue other opportunities for artistic development.”

Second-place winner Jordan Hoagbin is a graphic designer. His project “came about from being in a stressful environment as a designer, and the frustration of not living up to your own

expectations. It’s about being vulnerable, showing your life’s work and having people judge you.”

“Winning this award was very validating,” said Jordan. “To be recognized by established people in the art world in Portland is incredibly rewarding.”

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BUILDS CONNECTIONS The PSU Alumni Association serves more than 150,000 alumni around the world and sponsors career development activities and networking events, both on campus and across the country.

In fiscal year 2013, the association strengthened its alumni networks in seven U.S. cities and five foreign countries and launched AlumniNet, an online community for PSU alumni. The association also surveyed alumni to explore how best to meet their needs. Alumni described strong interest in the value of their degrees and in career development activities.

“We learned a lot and are shifting our strategies and programs to respond to the input we received,” said Dan McDonald (MBA ’91), 2012–13 association president.
