Black & White Introduction Black and White (B&W) Photography belongs to an altogether different era and the interesting part is that the art form has not only survived all this long, it is thriving with innovations taking place every next time. Seems as if man is finding it difficult to come out of its spell. B&W comes with a rich heritage in the form of works of Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Edward Weston etc, who created masterpieces out of the constraints of equipment, tools and above all - color. But absence of the latter evidently came to their advantage and helped them see what would not be visible in a colored world. Colors dominate frame, its aspects and elements; and so a B&W photographer will rather focus on the potentials of placement, shape, pattern, texture, tonal contrast and above all flow and quality of light. B&W photography is way beyond mere conversion of a color photo to grayscale. It is about creation of fine art objects from the scene around us. B&W is inspiring, ethereal and will remain forever.

ADOLFO CARLI Milano, Italia

I've traveled around the world for the past 48 years and inevitably been a great fan of photography. The photos I usually shoot belong to photojournalism, quite obviously known as street-photo. Like me, many other photographers over the age of 50 should have started their journeys with black and white photography and were delighted to switch to color photography when it was eventually introduced.

During the past few years I have discovered that B&W still has a lot to say. Apart from the unlimited scope in fine art subjects we majorly see its use in portraiture, street, reportage etc in many interesting ways. I bet I should not be the one worrying about B&W in art as I see more and more photographers publishing their photos in B&W. 10

The magic of black and white is in the fact that the observer is free to interpret and elaborately plan to create an image in the absence of colour. This forced attention to the image makes our brains stop to decipher it, as if it were a mystery.. For instance having to imagine the colors of a landscape and sometimes trying to guess what the author wanted to underline. It always forces us to take a second look, placing it at a higher level of consciousness.

My name is Antonio Sanchez Marcos and I have been pursuing this mystery and its enchantment, since I began to get into the world of photography. Black and white makes it possible to highlight the object against the background in the photographic rendering with a greater precision than colour, since there are no distractions allowed within the confines of the scene intended to be presented. These results fascinate me and drive my passion. 34

FABRIZIO FONTANA Chiasso, Svizzera

fotocineclubchiasso.ch

After a basic training in economics and a short period of work in this sector, I got a chance to go on a hitchhiking trip that somehow lasted several months. I visited France, Spain, Morocco and Portugal, the countries that became my muses after my visit to them. Coming back, I saw a radical change in my life. I left my job, my family, and place of origin and started devoting myself to several cultural and social activities. From these circles, I got my first opportunity to become an amateur actor. The acclamation made me undertake this path professionally, by first going to Milan and then to Paris where I was introduced to various formative experiences.

In Paris, I continued my training with the great masters Decroux, Philippe Gaulier, Monika Pagneux and Jacques Lecoq. Eventually destiny took me to Rome and there, I started working in the world of entertainment and cinematography. During the entire journey of my life, photography has stayed with me, thanks to my brother Silvano, who was a professional photographer at the time. This passion has always belonged to me although my approach remains amateur. Black and white is a choice that implies a certain amount of imagination, as we are used to seeing and thinking the world in color. This aspect fascinates me and is the reason why I chose this as a preferred artistic route, although, in terms of color, I feel like the fox who, unable to reach the grapes, chooses to ignore it. 46

There is no artistic photography. In photography there are, as in all things, people who know how to see and others who can't even look. - Nadar (Gaspard FÈlix Tournachon)

My concept of photography is contained in this thought of Nadar. I don't think we need to add anything else. 58

LEONARDO RICCI Sant’Arcangelo di Romagna, Italia

I am a 57 year old amateur photographer with great passion for black and white.

I love photography for my fascination for being able to seize the moments of time forever. I firmly believe that every moment is filled with eternal light and it must be responsibility as humans to capture them in the frame of time to be remembered in future. I join long photography walks and eventually find myself reviving them in my own shots later. I have participated in several photographic exhibitions related to the Marche landscapes. I want to give face to the emotions through my photographs. 70

ROBERTO RAMPINELLI Bergamo, Italia

facebook.com/roberto.rampinelli.3 instagram.com/rampinelliroberto/

I live in Bergamo, where I was born in the year 1959. I have loved photography since I was a child, when I used to watch photographers at work and was always fascinated by the works of those geniuses who could transform the clicks of their "magic boxes" into so realistic pictures. I have cultivated this passion over the years, initially only dreaming about it and then starting with the first technical rudiment, learning from a dear friend, with a small camera given to me by my father - a man with little money and a lot of love.

The camera’s unique but fundamental quality was that it was completely manual and equipped with an exposure meter. From there I continued to refine my technique, but above all I discovered little by little the subjects that I was most passionate about and the common thread that united them - the humanity of people: in work, sport, art (especially dance), religion, and also in the simplest moments of everyday life when men and women become the human beings. My desire today is to be able to represent their humanity. I have indulged in underwater photography in the past and have many fond memories of it. I am not a professional photographer. I am a Human Resources Director in a company. I like my job for many reasons, and some of them are probably the same why I love photography. 82
