Markers and milestones: The making of the marque 1963

Jack Newington acquires a cluster of disused gravel pits by the River Nene, transforming them into Oundle Marina, home of Fairline.

1967

Launch of the first Fairline, a 19' river cruiser, handcrafted yet already exploiting the latest boat construction techniques.

1971

Jack Newington’s son Sam, Columbia MBA and former fighter pilot, takes over the helm of the company from his father. Sam establishes an international network and turns the first profit in the company’s history. Staff count: 14.

1974

The launch of the groundbreaking Phantom 32 sets the pace for the next decade.

1977

Fairline 40, largest boat to date, produced for a record 11 years.

1979

Staff count: 140. Turnover: over £5million.

1981

36 Turbo launched to huge acclaim.

1985

The emergence of the first Targa. Corporate growth continues apace, with new sites opening in Weldon and the Nene Valley.

1991

Launch of Fairline’s first entry into the super yacht market, the Squadron 62. This introduction puts Fairline successfully into an entirely new and even more challenging market.

1996

Sam Newington hands executive responsibility to Derek Carter, who immediately sets about building on the passion and pride of the workforce by installing a new management structure, streamlining decision-making and promoting fresh thinking at the design level.

1998

Focusing on the ownership experience, Fairline is now represented worldwide through a network of 35 strong and passionately customer-focused dealers. Fairline Boats of North America Inc., a US subsidiary and sales office, is established to promote customer service in this key market.

2002

Fairline completes two of the most ambitious programmes in its history: the construction of the major new Nene Valley II production facility, and the addition of the flagship Squadron 74 to the motor yacht range. In addition, the 10,000th Fairline, a special-edition Squadron 65 leaves the yard.

2003

Fairline breaks new ground with the introduction of Targa 62 GRAN TURISMO, incorporating a powered retractable hardtop.

2004

The new Targa 47 GRAN TURISMO and Targa 52 GRAN TURISMO continue to dominate the express cruiser market.

2005

A new chapter – Derek Carter leads a successful Management buy-out.
