From Strength to Strength What a year it has been with the launch of the highly acclaimed Targa 47 GRAN TURISMO, Targa 52 GRAN TURISMO and Squadron 66 models and the Management Team’s purchase of the Company. These events, coupled with the introduction of Lean Manufacturing techniques, new market opportunities and the launch of a new apprenticeship scheme, will ensure that Fairline is better placed to move forward than at any time in its nigh 40 year history. As you page through the brochure, you will see our continued commitment to the ongoing development of existing and new products throughout our range. The Targa 38 which will be launched during 2006, underlines Fairline’s commitment to maintaining its presence in the all important sub-40 foot market, and developments currently on the drawing board will ensure that the Fairline brand remains the brand of choice in the 30 to 75 foot market. We are ever conscious of the significant investment being made in our products by our customers and dealerships alike, both factors being important in our evolutionary design philosophy. After all, who would feel comfortable with investing significantly in style alone only to find it outdated by the passing of time? Our dealerships too are a key part of our strength and their aggregate time with the Fairline brand spans 300 years, testimony to the strengths of the brand, the dealership and the relationship; all factors that ultimately provide security 02

when purchasing a Fairline product.

03

We recently conducted an independent survey amongst 200 boating customers, selected at random throughout the world, some of whom were currently Fairline owners and others not. Their top five Fairline attributes were considered to be – exterior design, quality of the delivered product, its ability to hold value, its reliability and its interior design and layout. With these attributes, a venerable history, a dealer network that is second to none, a committed and trained workforce, continued commitment to new product development allied to the latest manufacturing techniques and a loyal, growing customer base – we will continue from strength to strength.

Markers and milestones: The making of the marque 1963

Jack Newington acquires a cluster of disused gravel pits by the River Nene, transforming them into Oundle Marina, home of Fairline.

1967

Launch of the first Fairline, a 19' river cruiser, handcrafted yet already exploiting the latest boat construction techniques.

1971

Jack Newington’s son Sam, Columbia MBA and former fighter pilot, takes over the helm of the company from his father. Sam establishes an international network and turns the first profit in the company’s history. Staff count: 14.

1974

The launch of the groundbreaking Phantom 32 sets the pace for the next decade.

1977

Fairline 40, largest boat to date, produced for a record 11 years.

1979

Staff count: 140. Turnover: over £5million.

1981

36 Turbo launched to huge acclaim.

1985

The emergence of the first Targa. Corporate growth continues apace, with new sites opening in Weldon and the Nene Valley.

1991

Launch of Fairline’s first entry into the super yacht market, the Squadron 62. This introduction puts Fairline successfully into an entirely new and even more challenging market.

1996

Sam Newington hands executive responsibility to Derek Carter, who immediately sets about building on the passion and pride of the workforce by installing a new management structure, streamlining decision-making and promoting fresh thinking at the design level.

1998

Focusing on the ownership experience, Fairline is now represented worldwide through a network of 35 strong and passionately customer-focused dealers. Fairline Boats of North America Inc., a US subsidiary and sales office, is established to promote customer service in this key market.

2002

Fairline completes two of the most ambitious programmes in its history: the construction of the major new Nene Valley II production facility, and the addition of the flagship Squadron 74 to the motor yacht range. In addition, the 10,000th Fairline, a special-edition Squadron 65 leaves the yard.

2003

Fairline breaks new ground with the introduction of Targa 62 GRAN TURISMO, incorporating a powered retractable hardtop.

A Fairline is in the details

E

very Fairline is the confluence of a bold creative vision, a clear sense of purpose and a sound

seafaring pragmatism. These attributes combine to create a motor yacht that intuitively feels ‘right’, instilling a sense of comfort and confidence in everyone who steps aboard.

The evocative lines of each boat are a classic merging of form and function. The hull form – responsible for the dry, secure and responsive ride that is the hallmark of every Fairline – comes from the studios of renowned naval architect Bernard Olesinski, while Fairline’s own Design, Engineering and Product Development teams create and refine every other aspect of the boat’s design – from the bold style statements of the superstructure to the smallest interior detail. 06 07

Enriching the wealth of practical in-house design experience is feedback from our worldwide network of dealers and, above all, from Fairline owners. We support international rallies, where Fairline designers can talk directly with Fairline customers about real-world, hands-on design issues and practicalities.

And it’s not mere talk, either. Improvements as a result of these personal discussions have included changes to dashboard and instrumentation layouts, the darkening of materials in certain areas to minimise glare and the separation of compass and gauge illumination to maximise night-vision retention.

The Fairline Way: More than Skin Deep • The hull: Unidirectional and woven rovings are hand-laid. Gel, too, is brushed on by hand; no robots or spray guns to be found here. Around 100 components are then bonded to the hull, becoming an integral part of it and systematically adding strength. It takes three to four times longer to build a boat this way, but the result is infinitely stronger. This is the foundation of Fairline’s legendary build quality and performance. • The superstructure: Rigidly locked to the hull by bolts spaced no more than 23cm (9”) apart, creating what is virtually a monocoque. Makes for a structure of superlative strength and enormous torsional rigidity, which translates into a Fairline’s renowned handling and stability at all speeds.

• Build: Many boat-builders treat the inevitable gaps between bulkhead and hull in bathtub style: with silicone. Fairline engineers do it the hard way, individually carving hand-fitted timber inserts, lacquering and polishing them to ensure the two surfaces mate and match perfectly. • Craftsmanship: We take great care to conceal any screw-heads and fixtures on our doorframes and cabinetry. Much time and effort is poured into making doors fit firmly and snugly, eliminating typical sources of rattle and hum. Grain is lovingly matched across doors, joints, bulkheads, drawers and cabinets, creating a seamless beauty. The parts you can’t see are just as important: all accessible storage areas, for example, are flowcoated to make them more comfortable to use and easier to clean.

• Quality assurance: Every single boat we produce has its own quality certification, a rigorous process that can involve over 2,000 separate checks. The visual inspection stage alone takes approximately 30 hours depending on boat model. • Recognition: Fairline was the first British boat manufacturer to receive a BS5750/ISO9001 quality accreditation.

The Targa Range

outstanding performance, a sleek athletic shape, and excellent use of space. Their deep-V Olesinski hulls cut and plane effortlessly through the heaviest of seas, provide soft riding into head seas, and cocoon you with the highest levels of creature comforts and equipment.

Naturally, the Fairline heritage runs deep: behind the head-turning good looks, clever detailing and gleaming trim, the build quality is impeccable. Fine American Cherry or Honey Maple cabinetry, stunning dĂŠcor, LCD television and stereo audio, sparkling halogen lighting and well-equipped galleys are just some of the features that come as standard on all Targa models.

Targa 34

S

he might be the smallest, but she’s also the fastest boat in the Fairline fleet. Superbly engineered and planned, the Targa 34 has a top speed

approaching 40 knots – yet is one of the very few boats in her class to feature two totally separate sleeping cabins. As with many Fairlines, she has the luxury feel and the ‘presence’ of much larger, slower, more expensive boats.

40 14 15

Her Olesinski hull delivers a smooth ride even in choppy seas, enabling you to maintain a brisk pace, while skippers of less agile boats are backing off on the throttles.

This kind of fun was made for sharing. The 34’s helm is matched with spacious companion seating to port, in addition to a fully upholstered settee behind, where a hideaway table creates an al fresco dining area in seconds. The settee quickly converts into an enormous (and immensely comfortable) sunbed. A drinks bar, electric fridge, sink and drinks holders are all within lazy reach.

For swimmers, there’s a big, teak-decked, bathing platform aft, complete with wide-tread transom ladder and hot/cold shower. Clever stowage planning helps keep the deck areas safe and clutter-free.

In the saloon below, there’s ample headroom – truly remarkable in a boat of this size. Clutter vanishes inside warm American Cherry lockers. The settee in the saloon converts into an extra double bed, an LCD television and dry bar, bathroom and shower come as standard.

Targa 47

I

n the development plans for the Targa 47 we declared our intention of

creating a model to ‘Redefine the Art of Express Cruising’. That this has been

achieved so smoothly is due in large part to the earlier launch of our flagship model, the widely acclaimed Targa 62. 36

Her leading-edge innovations led the way and the all-new Targa 47 inherits the

37

key elements of her design philosophy, including the signature feature of all our GRAN TURISMO models, the powered retractable hardtop. The story continues with an incredibly spacious cockpit, a large stern bathing platform and an integrated garage … not to mention the magnificent saloon, galley and two large cabins, each with its own en suite.
