Alain Bombard French physician (1924 - 2005)

In 1952, the young Alain Bombard, a 27-year-old physician-navigator, left Las Palmas in the Canary Islands on an inflatable boat he christened “l’HĂŠrĂŠtiqueâ€?, with no food or water.

He thus covered one-quarter of the globe’s circumference under the worst possible conditions, and two months later arrived safe and sound at Barbados, in the West Indies. Eating fish and plankton and drinking fish juice and rainwater, he proved that it is possible for a castaway to survive at sea thanks to the ocean’s riches.

With his book, “NaufragĂŠ Volontaireâ€?, published in 1958, he acquired worldwide fame and then took part in various research projects and the development of liferafts.

He then saw the creation of a line of inflatable boats bearing his name: watercraft designed for pleasure boating as well as Commando boats applied to more professional uses.

In France and abroad, his name is still associated with survival at sea and, more generally, with the protection of the sea and marine ecology.

Alain Bombard forged the values of adventure and reliability of the brand that bears his name. By offering safe, robust products, Bombard boats are a reference to this heritage every day.

The hullshape of any boat is one of the most important criteria in its design. This is often overlooked by other inflatable manufacturers and the public, with the result being disappointing, wet or even dangerous handling characteristics. At Bombard, every single one of our hullshapes is in our Computer Aided Design programs which benefit from the latest marine software to reproduce correct planing ability, effective resistance points, rigidity, comfort and safety.

Scientific expeditions, sea rescue organisations, fishermen, diving or sailing clubs, all these activities require reliability and safety.

January/February 2006: An international team of explorers and speleologists headed by Bernard Tourte went to South America. With their BombardsÂŽ (Commando C5, Typhoon, etc.), they explored the icy waterfalls and subterranean caves of Patagonia under extreme conditions.

A built-in self-bailer (a Bombard patent) allows the water taken on board, in particular during inflation, to be drained automatically from the raft. This will help to ensure dry comfort after boarding. An optimised boarding system, with 2 ladders (inside and outside), makes it easy to climb aboard from the water. The BIP Offshore ISO 9650 models are also equipped with an access ramp.

The new ISO 9650 standard is intended to improve and harmonise design standards for liferafts. It distinguishes 2 categories of rafts: “Type 1” and “Type 2”.

Type 1 rafts are designed for sailing on the open sea, and are thus adapted to the risks incurred on long voyages (high winds and heavy seas). They are available in 2 groups according to the ambient air temperature: ฀Group A : rafts designed to inflate correctly at an ambient air temperature of between -15 and 65°C;

฀Firing head The vital part of the inflation process. Bombard uses the same exclusive firing head on all its liferafts from 4 person leisure models to 50 person commercial models.

Using tensioned firing pin (similar to that of a fire-arm) inflation is immediate and risk free: no moving parts to block the system or impede inflation. Unlike the crude methods used in some liferafts, this system does not rely on the physical strength of the user to set it off, the pressure of releasing the trigger spring is enough to start the inflation.

Type 2 rafts are suitable for coastal sailing, in moderate sea conditions. They are designed to inflate correctly at an ambient temperature of between 0° and 65°C.

Irrespective of their group, they offer two equipment levels that differ according to the time estimated by the yachtsman before help arrives: less than or more than 24 hours.

The ISO 9650 standard does not impose any limit between coastal and open sea sailing (evaluating this limit is left up to the good judgment of the yachtsman).

฀฀Planned safety If you have the misfortune of needing to use your liferaft, the situation you will find yourself in is likely to be that of panic and confusion, where you need to act calmly and efficiently. As the skipper, it is your responsibility to assure the safety of everyone on board.

Before setting out, your liferaft must figure on your checklist. You always check your battery, your radio and your navigation equipment, but you must also be sure that your liferaft is in an accessible place, not tucked away at the bottom of a locker or in a cabin.

You need to ensure that it can be launched without difficulty, is up to date for servicing, and that everyone on board knows the launching procedure. By being prepared you can prevent an accident from becoming a tragedy.

For BIP Offshore ISO 9650 rafts provided with a separate > 24 hours bag (grab bag), you are also responsible for ensuring the good condition of the contents of the grab bag. Your Bombard service station would be happy to do this and we strongly recommend that you bring your grab bag for servicing with your liferaft.

In doing so, you will get to see your liferaft inflated, find out what equipment it contains and how it is arranged and even add additional personal supplies. Hopefully this will be the only time that you see your liferaft out of its canister, although should the worst happen you will at least know more about how it works and what to do in an emergency.
