The hard work of Marine Harvest’s Human Resources team has been recognized. The Company has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Canadian HR Awards. This award recognizes the most outstanding HR team of the year, in an organization with 500 employees or more in Canada. It shows that the team has excelled within the HR function and across their business as a whole, by partnering with different business functions. This award focuses on the team’s collaborative approach to the overall HR function.

Criteria for the selection included: demonstration of an integrated HR team effort, team contribution and

implementation of specific HR initiatives, and also team contribution to employee productivity and the achievement of company goals.

“The finalists are the best of the best,” said Jessica Duce, Project Director of Canadian HR Awards.

“They demonstrate the resilience, innovation and sheer management smarts it takes to build a thriving people-centred business today. Success stories like theirs are the lifeblood of HR in Canada.”

Overall, Doug is looking forward to the new cycle getting underway; “after reflecting on the cycle just completed I’m looking forward to getting started in October, the new pens at Mahatta East and West are not the only new developments.

We’re planning on opening up a new office in Quatiche in the coming months too which will be a great resource too.”

FILOMI Days The Marine Harvest Charity BBQ was in Port Hardy for the annual FILOMI Days celebrations. The dedicated BBQ team of Cori and Rosebud were joined by volunteers from our Port Hardy Processing Plant in serving delicious salmon burgers and noodle salads. As always, the proceeds for these sales went directly to charity, in this case there could not be a more deserving one than Port Hardy Fire Rescue, the fifth year that they had been our partners at this event. Close to $1700 was raised on the day, which is a great achievement, congratulations and thank you to all involved!

Boat Rescue

Keith, waiting for his next mission…

For the passengers on a boat with engine trouble, Keith Wood was the cavalry coming over the hill. What Keith sees as “just doing his job” was in fact saving the day for them. Keith tells the story: “I was heading into work leaving Saltery Bay when I could see out of the corner of my eye multiple people frantically

waving. I altered my course and pulled up along side to see what this issue was.

Their motor was beyond repair upon a quick examination, so it meant a tow. The closest port was Egmont (with any hope of repairing their motor) which was a 45 min tow away. After safely towing the 5 visitors to the dock they had asked to send me a MarineHarvest.ca

Nanwakolas Golf Tournament

Marine Harvest put on a good show at the Nanwakolas Annual Corporate Golf Challenge this year. Two teams entered in the competition, joining a total of 149 golfers taking part in our Annual Corporate Golf Challenge. We also had a table on the course providing the participants with a chance to taste some smoked salmon

products from Salish Seafoods and Hardy Bouys, all made with our salmon, of course.

Although fortunes were mixed on the golf course were up and down, everyone found time to comment on the delicious salmon on offer.

The proceeds raised during this Tournament went towards the Tl’axsam

Bursary Fund for Aboriginal Students at North Island College and over $30, 000.00 was raised. The student enrolment of Aboriginal students at North Island College is 10%, a very high number for any college, possibly highest of any in B.C. which highlights the importance of the bursary.

Marine Harvest Riptide Girls bring home the hardware The Marine Harvest Riptide U18 Girls won gold and the U16 and U15 Girls win bronze at the 2018 BC Soccer A-Cup championships, July 5-9 in Richmond.

To quote a BC Soccer official, “The girls played very well,” as they demonstrated how Upper Island soccer teams are making their mark in the BC Soccer world.

Both the U16 and U15 Marine Harvest Girls Riptide teams won bronze. The U16 scoring a last minute goal to send their final match into overtime, then within the first 5 minutes of overtime, 3 goals were scored by the girls to secure the win for bronze!

Riptide U18 Girls 2018 BC Soccer A-Cup Champs

The U18 Girls triumphed after a series of hard fought matches. “The girls worked hard in each game and were inspired amidst some injuries and fatigue”, a Riptide team spokesperson noted. “The gold medal ceremony caps off a previous bronze and silver medal for a team who came together in the fall of 2015, and grew strong as a group, training every week, rain or shine,

and playing hard every weekend to be the top in the U18 girls division on Vancouver Island and the best team in the province.”

Midsummer BBQ

The annual staff BBQs were held at Midsummer Island over the last two weeks.

A rare chance for staff from sites and offices to get together and share some food, drinks and good times. These opportunities help to create and strengthen working

relationships and friendships between our staff who are often working remotely. Once again there were door prizes handed out, not many people left empty handed and this year a frisbee golf tournament was held alongside the BBQ. This provided a

competitive outlet and a chance to win some more prizes. Winners this year included Jason Penny & Mark Brow, with Mike Rennenberg and Brad Remple runners up. Thanks go to Mike Dobbs and his team for organising!
