NEW THIS YEAR - 2023

DEVIL DOG DOUBLE

Once again, the Devil Dog Double will start in conjunction with the Marine Corps Historic Half. Devil Dog Double participants will again be challenged with completing the 13.1 miles of the half marathon course before mentally persevering to finish the last 5 miles. The additional 5 mile portion will now run down Gordon W. Shelton Boulevard and back up Cowan Boulevard. Runners will only need to conquer Hospital Hill once, but will have to overcome the elevation of Cowan Boulevard twice. This change in course welcomes a new set of participants as the pace requirement is now a 12 minute per mile.

PACE TEAM

We are pleased to have Half Fanatics as the official Marine Corps Historic Half pace team again in 2023. Designated pace times include:

• 1:30

• 1:40

• 1:50

• 2:00

• 2:10

• 2:20

• 2:30

Half Fanatics is a club for runners who are crazy and passionate about running half marathons and are ready to take it to the next level. They aren’t your typical running club, you must first qualify to join the insanity - 3 half marathons in 90 days or 2 within 16 days to qualify.

SECURITY AND SAFETY

All participants and spectators are asked to adhere to guidance provided by law enforcement during Historic Half Weekend. Runners and spectators also will be guided through screening points at the Historic Half start areas.

All runner and spectator bags, backpacks, purses, etc., will be subject to search by U.S. Marines and law enforcement at all of the screening points. Participants will be provided a clear plastic bag during Packet Pick-up at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo. Only these clear plastic bags will be allowed at the Baggage tent located near the Historic Half and Devil Dog Double start area or on the U-haul baggage truck parked at the Semper 5ive start area.

On event day, participants may carry or wear hydration backpacks or vests and/or fuel belts while completing the Historic Half courses. Wearing a costume masks, hood, or other device that conceals a substantial portion of the face is strictly prohibited. Glass containers, flammable liquids or weapons of any kinds are not allowed at any event location.

In addition, all drones are prohibited as the area is designated a “no drone zone” by the Federal Aviation Administration. Drones are also prohibited in all National Park Service locations.

Runners and spectators are asked by the Marine Corps Marathon Organization and law enforcement partners to actively observe their surroundings while also supporting the procedures put in place to ensure the safety of all persons present. If something suspicious is observed, individuals should report it immediately, either by calling 911 or by asking a police officer, or U.S. Marine, for assistance. Remember, if you “See Something,Say Something.”

ECONOMIC IMPACT

The Marine Corps Historic Half in Fredericksburg has a highly significant local economic impact, generating millions of dollars in local spending.

The Marine Corps Historic Half generates as much as $7.2 million in direct local spending, according to the 2017 report by the University of Mary Washington’s Center for Business Research. Fredericksburg’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism commissioned the study.

In addition to the estimated economic impact, the study’s findings included:

• The event brought about 16,300 people to Fredericksburg.

• About half of the non-local participants stayed in area hotels during their visit.

• The event generated as much as $524,000 in tax revenue for the City of Fredericksburg.

“The study shows what a wonderful event the Marine Corps Historic Half is for the City of Fredericksburg,” said Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw. “It brings thousands of people to our beautiful city and has a great effect on our local businesses and government. We know that many of the participants return to our City as visitors, and we look forward to their return.”

MARINE CORPS MARATHON ORGANIZATION ABOUT THE

Marine Corps Historic Half Weekend, comprised of the Healthy Lifestyle Expo, the Marine Corps Historic Half (MCHH), the Semper 5ive and the Devil Dog Double, is hosted by the Marine Corps Marathon Organization (MCMO).

Celebrating its 16th year, the MCHH welcomes runners from throughout the country and world to run the scenic and landmark-filled streets of Historic Fredericksburg, Virginia. The “Greatest Half in History” has gained a reputation for its Hospital Hill, a 0.53 mile segment in which elevation doubles from 100 feet to 200 feet. This challenging section comes at the 10.5 mile mark and is in the middle of a two mile uphill climb that eventually peaks at Cowan Boulevard. After conquering Hospital Hill, runners make their way to the finish line.

The MCMO hosts multiple events throughout the year, all with the spirit of the Marine Corps.

The 2023 MCMO Event Schedule is as follows:

• March 25: Marine Corps 17.75K

• May 21: Marine Corps Historic Half, Devil Dog Double & Semper 5ive

• August 26: Quantico 12K

• October 28: MCM Kids Run

• October 29: Marine Corps Marathon, MCM50K & MCM10K

• November 18: Turkey Trot 10K & Turkey Trot Mile

IRON MILE COMPANY

Named after the Iron Mines Company, a mining and smelting operation founded in nearby Spotsylvania in 1725, the 82 runners comprising the Iron Mile Company have completed every Marine Corps Historic Half since its inception in 2008.

Membership in this exclusive group must be maintained by continuing to run and finish the Historic Half every year. Since 2017, a finish in the Devil Dog Double also qualifies. The current company is comprised of 29 women and 52 men. The youngest runner is 30; the oldest is 76. Iron Mile members hail from 8 states and the District of Columbia with 23 runners from right here in Fredericksburg!

Each runner in the Iron Mile Company has displayed their dedication and resiliency by conquering the distance virtually in 2020 and 2021 before returning to once again run live in 2022. Who will continue to be Iron Made in 2023?
