The Academic Program
Marin Academy Research Collaborative (MARC)
Transdisciplinary Learning & Leadership Program (TLP) at MA
Join our Dean of Academics to learn about Marin Academy’s approach to high school education and how we’re preparing students for success after graduation. He will spend 15–20 minutes sharing aspects of the program and curriculum, reserving the last 10–15 minutes for questions.
Belonging & Community at MA
Join MARC faculty and students to learn how this cutting-edge STEM program allows our students to engage with novel scientific research.
What is Transdisciplinary Education? What does it mean to be a leader and how can one practice those skills in the classroom every day? How can classes get beyond the boundaries of campus and provide students an opportunity to do meaningful work in the real world? Join us for an overview of Marin Academy’s Transdisciplinary Leadership Program and learn about the philosophy and design of its courses and projects. The highlight of the session will be a panel of students who will be happy to answer your questions and share their experience of this unique and groundbreaking program.
Connect with our Dean of Equity and Inclusion and Director of Student Belonging to learn about our Identity & Equity (IDEQ) Groups, our approach to fostering a sense of belonging for all students, and a student-support program called Belonging@MA. You will learn about how our DEIB work is integrated into Marin Academy life, and you will hear from student leaders of IDEQ groups who will both share their experiences and answer questions. We encourage all families to attend this community-oriented session!
Meet the Head of School Head of School Travis Brownley and Dean of Institutional Advancement Trent Nutting will be on hand to discuss Marin Academy’s strategic direction.
Student Life
Join our Dean of Students and MA students to learn about student life at Marin Academy. This session will begin with a short overview of the Dean and Advising structure and will then give attendees a chance to ask questions.
Moving Molecules Explore the phenomena of molecular movement by electrophoresis. Students will have the opportunity to practice using micropipettes in the process of separating molecules by charge and size.
Fun with Microfiction! We exist in a competitive economy of attention. People value efficient communication. So, how can we create big impacts with just a few words? Microfiction! Come ready to write and share multiple micro-stories and pack a punch into the smallest number of words possible.
Know Your Rights! To what extent do the civil liberties articulated in the Bill of Rights protect students at school? You will find soon find out, as we explore the text of the Bill of Rights and then predict the outcomes of different Supreme Court cases that address the liberties of young people.
Image & Word: Exploring the Graphic Narrative
Keep-Flip-Turn
Wartime Propaganda
The graphic narrative has become one of the most exciting venues for new literary voices to emerge. In this session, we will have fun exploring how images and text work together to create compelling stories.
Come join the math faculty for an engaging and hands-on exploration of “KeepFlip-Turn,” a fun and thought-provoking dice activity. Together, we’ll dive into creative strategies for reaching a number goal while following specific rules— only to discover that the first solution might just be the beginning. Get ready to think outside the box as we explore different solutions, consider when there might be no solution, and experiment with ways to tweak the game’s difficulty. We’ll even have some fun by breaking the “rules” to see what happens!
To what degree does propaganda affect us? Learn about the role propaganda can play in shaping the attitudes of citizens during times of crisis in a collaborative lesson. A brief overview of the History Department’s philosophy and offerings will conclude this session.
Can Color Be Quantified?
Mathematical Palindromes
Grab a set of MA Science Diffraction Grating Glasses and join our discussion of light and color in an attempt to answer the question, “Can Color Be Quantified?
Join math faculty to explore mathematical palindromes. While words like “civic,” “kayak,” or “race car” that are spelled the same forward and backward may come to mind first, in this session we will play with palindrome numbers, determining how far a number like 37 is from being a palindrome. We’ll work individually and collaboratively to make observations and hopefully generalize a pattern for future investigation. Please come to the session with some paper and a writing utensil so you can play along! At the end of our session, we will share some information about the math program at MA.
Photograms in the Photo Lab! (Photography mini-lesson)
Digging the Combo
The Magic of Metaphor
One of the oldest and most direct forms of photography is a process called “Photograms,” wherein objects are laid directly onto the light-sensitive material and exposed to light. In this session, participants will engage in darkroom experimentation, utilizing torn-out magazine pages as a basis for creating surrealistic, photographic montage.
Join the Marin Academy Dance Company (MADCO) in learning to dance this short, fun combo set to music that will make you want to move!
In this session, we will embody MA’s mission statement by thinking, questioning, and creating...poetry. We will read and discuss examples of metaphor in poetry; then, students will be asked to create and share poetic metaphors of their own. Be prepared to think both analytically and creatively as we experiment with the power of figurative language.
Contour Drawing: Life Through Line
Learn how to draw everyday objects through a series of observational drawing exercises using lines to create dimension.
