WILL & POWER OF ATTORNEY Did you know that 7 out of 10 Canadians do not have an up to date Will or Power of Attorney? It’s a staggering problem because the fact is Canadians are just not aware of how important it is to have a will in place. I hear all the time, I don’t “own” anything, or I don’t have children and so on. I like to think of this document as a love letter to the persons that we will leave behind.

would want to raise your children. The questions are tough, but vitally important to discuss. The last thing you want is to put unnecessary stress on the people you love in such a time of mourning and loss. Once you have decided on these key issues, set up an appointment to see a lawyer. It is well worth the time and effort to have this professionally done and there are many ways to have it done in an affordable manner.

A Will is not just for you, it is for your family. It shows them that you care. Family members are often left with the burden of trying to put the pieces of a puzzle together to organize your wishes.

So do yourself and your family and a big favor and set a goal to have your wishes set out in the next month. It will be the kindest thing you ever do.

YOU CAN PREVENT BREAST CANCER – NOW! By Dr. John Cline MD, BSc. CCFP “You Have Cancer” are the three most dreaded words in the English language. Every week I receive calls from people who are desperate to find effective ways to deal with their cancers. It is true, that the rates of cancers in general have increased over the last several decades and that cancer is the second leading cause of death in North America1, thus concern about cancer is a top health issue. One in two men and one in three women will develop cancer in their lifetime, with estimates that cancer will surpass heart disease becoming the number one cause of death by 2018.2 Cancer still accounts for more deaths than heart disease in persons under age 85 years.3 Although breast cancer can affect both women and men, the vast majority of breast cancers occur in women. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women as North American women stand a 1 in 8 chance of developing invasive breast cancer.4 In contrast, 8 in 100,000 Thai women will develop breast cancer. Of great concern, breast cancer is the leading cause of death in nonsmoking women ages 35 - 54 years old.5 The old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure holds true when it comes to all chronic disease - especially cancer. Each one of us, every day, has altered or mutated cells in our bodies. If our defense systems are working properly, and if the internal environment is a harsh one for cancers to thrive, then these abnormal cells are dealt with promptly. For most cancers, it takes approximately 1 - 40 years for them to develop from the early stages of a few cells to the diagnostic stage – thus, giving most of us time to put preventive strategies in place. The vast majority of cancers are directly caused by our interaction with the environment (external and internal). Genetically driven cancers account for the minority of cases. 50% of environmental causes are related to poor diet, limited exercise and cigarette smoking.6 Most Canadians think that cancer is a death sentence, yet this need not be! We can choose steps to prevent cancer! Since 85 – 90% of cancers stem from interactions with the environment, we must begin there! Reducing exposures to environmental toxicants such as arsenic, lead and mercury; pesticides, household cleaning agents, cell phones and similar technologies will significantly decrease risks of cancer. Cessations of smoking and alcohol abuse, replaced with new habits of optimizing nutrition, high-quality exercise, positive relationships and spiritual practices will make a huge difference in health. Healthy lifestyles impact our body’s internal state, which will prevent the growth of cancer cells. What effective steps can a person take to prevent breast cancer? There are foundational things that each one of us can do. Certainly, the most important foundation is diet. “Let food be your medicine and medicine your food” was an important principal taught to us by Dr. Hippocrates in 400 BC. This principal is still true today. An excellent resource regarding diet that I prescribe for my patients is a recently published book “Foods That Fight Cancer”7 and its companion recipe book. My favorite cancer prevention spice is turmeric and its active ingredient curcumin – which is the most potent and profound anti- inflammatory compound on earth. Over 200 studies have been published on the use of curcumin and breast cancer with a current review demonstrating the preventive and multi-targeted biological and molecular effects of curcumin in breast cancer.8 A current review of multiple studies on diet and breast cancer concluded that “both low-fat and high-fiber diets may be weakly protective against breast cancer, whereas total energy intake and alcohol appear to be positively associated. Fiber may be weakly protective possibly through modulation of estrogen. Obesity is a risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer, and adult weight gain should be

avoided to reduce risk. In survivors, diet has the greatest potential influence on overall mortality.”9 Another foundational principal is that exercise alone promotes better health. A recently published review10 of 34 randomized controlled trials in patients with cancer demonstrated that exercise was associated with clinically important positive effects on physical functions and quality of life. Exercise was also associated with significant reductions in insulin-like growth factor-1. This factor is significant in cancer and exercise may reduce the risk of such cancer reoccurrence. A most important foundational strategy to prevent breast cancer is maintaining excellent levels of 25 (OH) Vitamin D in our tissues. All Canadians should be taking adequate Vitamin D3 supplementation on a year-round basis. A recently published review of Vitamin D and breast cancer concluded that “studies in human populations and the laboratory have consistently demonstrated that vitamin D plays an important role in the prevention of breast cancer. Vitamin D supplementation is an urgently needed, low cost, effective, and safe intervention strategy for breast cancer prevention that should be implemented without delay.”11 The current recommended dosage for Vitamin D3 supplementation in adults is up to 10,000 IU per day. There are many other strategies that we can implement into our lives in order to prevent cancers in general. I will be covering these in an upcoming internet video series entitled You Can Prevent Cancer – Now! Here is to a bright future. Healthy Homes

Healthy Homes for Healthy Living When you’re buying a new home, you’re looking for a well-built, comfortable home that fits your way of life. It has to be affordable and, because it’s the single biggest investment many of us make in our lifetime, it should be a smart investment. Living in a healthy home, one that is designed, built and regularly maintained to support a safe and healthy lifestyle should be a high priority for all Canadian families. Some unhealthy conditions found in many homes include lack of proper ventilation and airflow, buildup of moisture leading to mold growth, and especially in older homes built prior to 1980, insulation containing asbestos and lead based paint. These conditions may contribute to ongoing illnesses in children and adults like asthma and respiratory problems. Over 20 years ago the R-2000 program was introduced by National Resource Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency to promote the use of cost effective energy efficient building practices, better indoor air quality, and the use of environmentally responsible products and materials. New homes built using the requirements of the R-2000 program use at least 30% less energy than conventional new homes. The ultimate goal of R-2000 qualified builders is to make homes safer and healthier for Canadians. The first thing you will notice when entering an R-2000 home is the feeling of fresh air. Eliminating stale humid air from the home and introducing fresh outdoor air is very important. Humid air can cause condensation that supports mold growth that in turn releases toxic spores into the air. By incorporating a whole-house ventilation system into every home, a continuous stream of fresh, filtered outdoor air is delivered to every room in the house. Homes need to breathe air in and out to stay healthy and fresh. By using a heat recovery ventilator, homes feel fresh and inviting throughout the year.

An R-2000 home means less chemicals in the air. These homes are built with water-based paints and sealers, formaldehyde free cabinetry, and chemically friendly adhesives. Right from the start, these homes are more friendly for those highly sensitive to chemicals. R-2000 is a better way of building for those who are committed to building the best. Don’t compromise on your family’s health and comfort. Consider an R-2000 home for your future home. Jonathan Zerkee, Sonbuilt Custom Homes Ltd., www.sonbuilthomes.com

Gardening Organically The goal of organic gardening is to have a balanced, healthy ecosystem. Here are a few things that you can do to have a chemical free garden. Firstly, start with the soil, as everything grows from the soil so everything is dependent on how healthy your soil is.

You can have a soil test done at your local Ministry of Agriculture office to determine if there are any deficiencies or an abundance of one or more elements in your soil. You can however tell a lot about your soil by just getting down and dirty with it! Run your fingers through the dirt and then take a handful and squeeze it – does it hold together? If it does then you have soil that has a good amount of organic matter in it. If it crumbles apart then you need to add organic matter such as compost to the soil. To make sure that your soil has proper drainage, a simple water test will tell you how good your soils drainage is. Dig a hole about 1 foot by 1 foot deep and then fill it with water. If the water drains away immediately then you have

8

Canadian Healthcare News - www.cdnhcn.ca

very gravely, sandy soil, which is good for drainage but will not retain much moisture for the plants needs in the heat of the summer, so again, organic matter will need to be added to the soil. If the water takes more than an hour to dissipate out of the hole, then soil drainage is very poor and indicates a lot of clay content. By adding sand and compost to the soil you will be able to break down the clay and create better drainage. For both sand and clay based soils the best way to improve the soil is by digging in lots of compost in the spring and top-dress your gardens in summer and fall with a composted mulch. Knowing the pH level of your soil is important too, it will help you to match plants with your soil conditions – acid lovers or alkaline lovers will grow best in the conditions that they are best suited for. A soil test will also tell you if there are any soil deficiencies of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. By adding these products to the soil you will be able to bring a more neutral balance to the soil: Nitrogen – blood meal, hoof and horn meal, canola seed meal Phosphorus – bone meal Potassium – wood ash, kelp meal Always remember that healthy soil and plants are less likely to have pest and disease problems, so the use of chemicals and labor is greatly reduced. Facts: The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. Soil with a pH of 7 is neutral; less than 7 and it is acidic; more than 7 and it is alkaline. Most plants grow in the 6.5 range. When composting remember that - green materials are rich in nitrogen; grass clippings and food waste. Brown materials are rich in carbon; straw, dead leaves, and sawdust. For best composting results you need to mix these materials in the compost bin, if you have trouble finding carbon rich material in the summer, use some shredded newspaper. Remove insects such as spider mites and mealy bugs from your plants by blasting them with the water hose. To keep cutworms away from your vegetable plants, remove both ends of a tin can and insert it in the soil around the plant making a collar. Marigolds, chrysanthemums, chives, onions, and garlic repel many insects so plant these amongst your vegetable garden. Susan Watson The Landscape Consultants 604.825.3474

Soapnuts Green Cleaning Products No toxic chemical mix with soapnuts! These wonderful nuts are the fruit of the Ritha tree. Really easy to use they come with a small muslin bag. Tie it closed and throw it into the drum of your washing machine. You can reuse them for about 4 loads of laundry. Use leftovers as a compost for your garden. Great for anyone with septic tanks. Soapnuts are perfect for front load washers as they don’t create suds! They are available at Sweetgrass Naturals in Fort Langley (778.298.0016). Soapnuts for Personal use: Boil 12-15 whole soapnuts with 6 cups of water for 30 minutes. When boiled down you will have about 4 cups of liquid left. When cooled, remove the soapnuts, and pour into an airtight jar. It is better to make the liquid in smaller batches as it can spoil. If you prefer a more concentrated version, using 3 cups water instead of 6 cups. Some prefer the concentrated solution for handwashing and shampoos. Hand Soap: Fill a foaming pump bottle with the liquid for a hand wash. It will not create lather like traditional soap, but it will get your hands clean. Consider adding some tea tree oil to make your hand wash antibacterial and antifungal. Shampoo: Use the liquid instead of your regular shampoo. It will not create a lot of suds, but it will work! Other uses: All Purpose Cleaner Keep it in a spray bottle and use to clean the bathroom, kitchen, floors etc. Window and Glass Cleaner Fill a spray bottle with 2 cups water, 1Tbsp.vinegar and 1Tbsp. soapnuts liquid. Spray and wipe windows or mirrors clean. Dishwasher Fill the soap dispenser with the liquid. Add vinegar as a rinse agent, and your dishes will sparkle! HEALTH ADVANTAGES OF MAKING YOUR OWN WINE Most people who like wine have never seriously considered making their own, but wine making wine is an interesting, enjoyable and surprisingly easy hobby and offers many advantages over buying wine from the store. The most obvious health benefit is that the winemaker can control the content of the wine. Store bought wines often come from a vineyard that has been sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals, and many additives are used in commercial wine which are not listed on the label, including sulphites, enzymes, tannin, tartaric acid, and gum arabic to name a few. Self made wine therefore offers a great advantage to anyone who wishes to go organic, is generally concerned about their intake of harmful chemicals, or who has a sulphite allergy. And self made wine is not only healthier, but often tastes better than store bought wine because of these features. The second most obvious advantage is that it saves money. To make a batch is fairly inexpensive, and the final product will probably cost less than four dollars a bottle. Making wine is therefore a great way to enjoy one of life’s pleasures without breaking the budget and saves on expenses for oc-

casions such as weddings and seasonal celebrations. Thirdly, making wine can save time. Since it is made in five gallon batches, each batch will provide 30 bottles of wine to keep conveniently on hand. Making several batches of different wines will produce a veritable wine cellar, doing away with the need to make special trips to the store for something to serve guests, to take to a party, or to give as a gift. In addition, having a ready supply of wine on hand allows the winemaker to easily enjoy the known health benefits of drinking a glass of wine a day. These include a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer, and the prevention of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. Wine making is a hobby that not only provides health benefits, but is something to share with friends, a topic of conversation, and a great sense of achievement.

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR COLON CANCER? In the USA, there are approximately 145, 000 new cases of Colon and Rectal cancer each year. The Canadian Cancer Society estimates 23,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with Colorectal cancer in 2012, and almost half, 9,200, will die from it. On average, 25 Canadians die daily from colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy is a procedure used to see inside the colon and rectum. Colonoscopy can detect inflamed tissue, ulcers, and abnormal growths. The procedure is used to look for early signs of colorectal cancer and can help doctors diagnose unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the anus, and weight loss. Screening can reduce colorectal cancer incidence by detecting and removing polyps before they become cancerous. This is done regularly in men and women over 50, Some high risk groups are encouraged to begin undergoing screenings at an earlier age. Family history and obesity are major risk factors for colorectal cancer. The fastest growing group is in their 40ʼs. I believe that diet is a major factor in colon cancers. Overall, diets that are high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains (and low in red and processed meats) have been linked with lower colorectal cancer risk, although it’s not exactly clear which factors are important. Many studies have found a link between red meat or processed meat intake and colorectal cancer risk.

As I mentioned they are a great way to catch Colon Cancers before they are deadly. The problem for most people isnʼt the procedure, which is about an hour long, but the preparation for it. A regular procedure is fasting the day before and taking foul tasting concoctions which empty your system of all fecal matter, possibly in a uncomfortable manner. I recently flew down to Panama City in Panama, and Sao Jose Do Rio Preto in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to teach progressive medical doctors and nurses Colon Hydrotherapy as a preparation for Colonoscopy and surgery. Colonics saved the doctors time as well as the patients, plus made the experience far less unpleasant . The patients were given specific dietary guidelines for the day prior to the Colonoscopy, but no need to stay home and close to the loo. They receive a colonic 1 to 2 hours before the exam and doctors reported great delight at the results. The colon was spotless and the doctors were able to quickly identify any trouble spots to take action. And, patients were in and out in record time. So when, because there isn’t an ʻifʼ on this one, your doctor says it’s time for a Colonoscopy, check with your local Colon Hydrotherapist and make sure your colon is clean as a whistle the easy way.

Your colon is a jungle of flora, bacteria and fungus. When it gets out of balance, certain bacteria can take over. Bad bacteria in the colon is one of the worst conditions that could exist in your body, yet few people are aware of this. Not only is bad bacteria one cause of constipation, it is also a source of toxic matter that returns into your body where they cause more havoc with your immune system. When bad bacteria takes over your colon for long periods, expect to have serious diseases as you age.
