Dine In With Mariemont Takeout
BY SHELLEY PADEN & MIK E BEN SON
Every family ha s a stressful day now and then, or even several of them in a row. On these days, having to make a hom e cooked meal feels as daunting as puttin g a man on the moon with a slin gs hot, and eve n ea tin g out seems mor e trouble th an it is worth. For a growi ng number of America ns, take out is becoming th e best so lution to feeding a crow d with the least amount of ha ss le. Inde ed, according to a recent survey , instead of hitting the drive-thru, more and more families are calling their local 'casual ' restau rant chain a nd ordering something to go. Many cas ual dining resta urants are promoting th eir tak eo ut service, eve n offering spec ial reserved parking spo ts near the door. The surv ey also revealed tl1at roughly 75 percent of all consu mer s currently make use of takeout or deli very from full-service restau rant s at leas t once a month and nearly 30 percent of these regular use rs would rather order takeout than eat in at a res taurant. To get a perspective on th e lo cal takeout situation in Mariemont, we asked th e Town Crier staff to tell us what th ey do on bu sy nights We also canvassed so me of th e local restaurants to ge t their sid e of the story . Claire Kupferle, Town Crier editor, has organized her favorite res taurant' s menus in a notebook. Menus, prices , and phone numbers are at her fingertips and she can call at a moment 's noti ce.
Angela Fo rsyth and her hu sba nd both love the chick en soup from El Jinet e, the Mexican re staurant on Red Bank by Wal-Mart. Their children , howeve r, prefer the wanton so up from Chin a One , which happen s to be loca ted in the sa me shopping ce nt er. One day when they were driving home from the airport after a two-week vacation, they reali zed that th e cupboard at hom e was bare. They called both restaurants from their ca r and placed tak eo ut orders . Angela picked up the so up s while her hu sba nd ran into Wal-Mart for a gallon of milk!
Ovens fr eq uently seem to break at the mo st inopportune times like at Thanksgiving or righ t before you have your in- laws over for a meal. This happened to Dina Wilder ri ght befo re she had so me important company co ming over for a fancy dinner. She called th e Quarter Bistro for so me fancy takeout to save the da y.
Did you know that yo u can ge t takeo ut from the National Exemplar? Marty and Bob Bartlett use it as their ace in the hole. Their favorite is the Reuben sandwich. They sub stitute a baked

potato for th e regul ar pota to di sh and then add an extra baked potato on th e side. The Reuben is large enough to sp lit and then the y both hav e a potato. The y report it' s a great meal One time the Exemplar forgot th e ext ra potato. When th ey called to check, thinking that maybe th ey had forgotten to order it , th ey go t extra special service. The Exe mplar sen t out th e mi ssi ng potato by speci al messe nger. A large sli ce of th e Exemplar's fantastic carrot cake was includ ed to swee ten th e c:ial Lisa Hopkin s, manager of th e Exemplar, told us that their entire menu is available for takeout, including breakfast. Pop ular item s includ e sandwiches, sala ds, so ups, and the ir salmon dinner. They ha ve one customer who co me s in once a month and gets eight cheeseburgers to go. Lik e the Exemplar , th e other res taurants we approached usually offe r their full menu s for takeo ut , but it is important to keep in mind that Friday, Saturday, and holidays can be busy tim es at res taurants and takeout service ca n be slower on tho se days. At th e recently opened Hal1 a na Beach on Wooste r Pike east of Kroger we learned that so me folks reall y love th eir fried green tom atoes. They will call and ord er large amount s of th e tomatoes and nothin g else. A waitress also rela yed that the head chef, " Big Mike, " is culinary trained and loves to please hi s customers. For
carnivore s with a burger craving, Fli pdadd y's will satisfy yo u, but they al so have vegetarian se lect ions, too, along with pastas, sala ds, and
so up s. For all-day takeout, Demetrio s IV opens at eight in the morning and frequentl y ha s folks order French to as t or other breakfast se lection s. Es pec iall y popular are
th e Ruben san dwi ch (sans so up for tak eo ut ), th e Gyro, and salad s. The Dill y Ca fe will also let you takeout anytlung on th eir men u, bu t th eir mo st popular items are Maryland style crab cakes, th e Dilly Cafe bee r cheese, and grilled shrimp & as paragus salad.
Finally, of co urs e, no story about takeout dining would be co mplet e without at leas t
ment ioning pizza , th e kin g of the tak eo ut world. Mariemont is lu cky enough to hav e two pizza establishments right in the Village and the y ha ve bee n the so urce of man y family sto ri es. Randy Yo rk related that when their children were very young one sugges ted that they order " pi zza from Miosa 's." This blending of Mio's and La Rosa's has stu ck and th ey frequently order from Miosa 's to this day. Whichever res taurant it is, th ey are always satisfied.
