Dear Neighbor,

# of Hom es SOLD in 2010 RISES!

With unemployment showing few signs of improvement, it's become clear that we won't see a true rebound in the real estate market until we have job growth.

With that being said, Mariemont is still a great place to calf home. Our average sale price was up 3% from 2009 and the# of homes SOLD was up 17% from fast year. ffyou need real estate assistance, I hope you will calf me. Even ifyou are just curious, I can provide you with a current market analysis ofyour home, updates on prices in the area, and current mortgage rates . There's always something interesting to discuss in the real estate business!

I would like to thank all of my friends who have made my real estate career so exciti ng Your supp ort means so much to me. God bless all ofyou in the new year.

Remembering Valentine's Day, 1927

There a re all kind s of fun facts in the a rchives of the Mariemont Preservation Fo undation. Looking through old copies of the Mariemont Me ssenge r, we found rep ort s of Va lentin e Day activities in Mariemont more than eight y years ago.

In 1927, the Mariemont Sunday Sc hoo l held a Va lentin e Food Sa le. Its purpose was to rai se money to meet their pledge of one hundred do llar s per year to spo nso r an Armeni an orpha n boy through a pro gram ca lled Near East Relief. In add ition to th e bake sale it ems," coffee , Va lentin es a nd Valentine material " we re sold. The sale was held in the

Model Laundry Com pany loca ted at the corner of Oak Stree t a nd Chest nut Str eet.

The Mariemont Comm unit y Clu b had a Va lentine danc e and card party Februar y 11, I 927 , at the Mar iemont Inn. About two hundred peop le attended. Prizes for ca rd playing includ ed a lea ther purse set, silk scarf, and sil ve r belt buckle. Dance music wa s provided by Robert Viscont i, lea der of th e Hotel Gib son Orchestr a, pia ni st Freddy Roehr and drummer Payson Bradstreet, a Mariemont reside nt. Numbered paper hearts were distributed and dancing partners were fo un d by locating th e other person with the same number. A fr ont pa ge art icl e in th e Feb ru a ry 18, 1927, Mariemont Messenger titl ed "No fai r!" reported th at some peop le modifi ed their numb ers This led to a n aw kward situ atio n when multiple yo un g men changed their s to the sa me number in o rd er to dance with a ce rtain yo ung lady wearing a "somewhat abb reviated, flaming red - gown."

The art tea cher at Dale Pa rk School that yea r, Mis s Ward, sho wed her stud ents how to

The Baraca-Philathea Class of th e Mariemont Chur ch plann ed a Va le ntin e Box Soc ial in 19 28. Unidentified "old fashioned ga mes" were played . In addition , eac h lady attending brought a box lun ch, whi ch was assigned a numb er. For The Love of Truffles

There are actually two kinds of truffl es and at first glance they appea r about as far apa rt on the food chart as two foods can get. However, they share a weird hi storical co nne cti on.

First, there is the truffle as an edib le body of fungi of the gen us Tuber. The se so rt s of truffles, which are hideously expens ive, are often use d in fancy res tauran ts in amounts that are sma ll eno ugh to be virt ually undetectabl e by ordina ry human s but still large eno ugh to raise the price of an entree toward s th e point where dieting becomes attrac ti ve. Second, there is the truffle as a delightfully ta sty small piece of choco late confectionary.

The mu shroom ve rsion of the truffle grows underground. It is apparently pretty hard to find and look s small, dark and vaguely sp her ica l in shape. The confectionary version of th e truffle is a ball of ganache , that is , a flavored mixture of chocolate and crea m. Legend ha s it that the choco late truffle was accidentally discovered in the kitchen of August Escoffier whe n one of his apprentices mistakenly poured hot cream in to a bowl of choco lat e chunk s in stead of suga red eggs. The cream melted th e choco lat e into a thick past e. When th e paste coo led, it co uld be worked into balls that looked so mething like truffl es - the mu shroom - and the rest, as th ey say, is hi story. Des pit e the origin of th e chocolate truffle in one of the gra nd est Fre nch kitchens of all time, it is a surpri singl y easy form of co nfec tionar y to make and is well within th e talent s of even th e mo st occasional of cooks.

The basic ingredien ts for the classic choco lat e truffle are heavy crea m, some type of chocolate, a fl avoring or two, and so me sor t of coating for th e surfa ce of th e ball. Of co ur se, chefs have re cipes that include many

other ingredients such as ginger, dried fruit , or candy bars. But we are sta rtin g with the bas ic recipe. To make a truffle, bittersweet, se mi-swee t, or white chocola te is chopped up and pu t in a double boiler with heat ed heavy

cream. When the choco lat e is melt ed and st irred int o a smooth and velvety cons iste ncy, it is taken off the hea t. Flavorings such as vanilla, liqueurs (Grand Marni er, Chambord, Bailey 's Iri sh Cream, Frangelico, or rum, for examp le), prepared coffee, or even some thin g as exo ti c as balsamic vinegar can be added. Then , th e mixture is co oled fo r fi ve to eight hour s. The balls can be formed with a mel on baller, a sma ll ice -cream scoop, or two teaspoo ns. No need to make them perfectly round. Us ing yo ur hand s fo r the fina l rolling gives them a n artisanal appearance rather than having them look lik e they were produced by a factor y. Your hands mi ght get a little chocolatety at this point , but playing with yo ur food is acceptable here. To finish thin gs off, th e chocolate ball s ca n be rolled in roasted nuts, coco nut , cocoa, powdered sugar, or eve n dribbled with melted choco late in a pleasing pattern, and there you have a truffle. They ca n be stored for a co up le of weeks in th e refriger ato r and brought out just sho rtl y before devouring them.

Recipes for truffle s ca n be found on the internet We tried seve ral on th e Food Netwo rk

website (wwwfoodnetwork com) including Ina Garten's chocolat e, ha ze lnut, and white choco late truffles. The hazelnut truffle quick ly became our favorite one. The crunch of th e hazelnut s co mbined wel l with th e smooth bittersweet and sem i- swee t chocolate.

Th is Valentine's Day, if yo u ca n afford it , yo u co uld go out to dinner and trea t yo ur spec ial swee tie to a truffle of th e fungus variety. But , if you wa nt a more affordable treat for your friends or sweetheart, try yo ur hand at these choco lat e delicacies. Th is is a treat that will surel y impress th em without breaking the bank or requiring elabo rat e cooking sk ill s. You ca n serve them by th e dozen on a specia l plate or a few in a gob let or on a he a rt shaped doily. Get rea dy for the cheers and app lause'

The Four Loko Ban

An alcoholic energy drink equal to six beers and with as much caffe in e as five cup s of coffee, or three shots of espresso, thi s "liquid cocaine" is nothing but bad news So ld for $2.50 in liqu or stores, it may seem lik e th e fiscally responsible drink of choice , as a case of beer can put a twenty doUar pit in your wallet and hard li quor a n even bigger one. However, the twenty three ounce can (most beer s come in twelve ounce ca ns) contain s not onl y caffeine and alcoho l, but al so wormwood, a key ingredi ent used in absinthe, an illega l liqu or in the United States. Absinthe, cla ss ified as a sp irit , is unusual among all spirits because it is bottled at a very high proof.

The iss ue with Four Loko is that th e components of an energy d rink and alcohol do

not mix well The caffeine allows th e consumer to feel e nergi ze d , but then alco hol, which is classified as a depressant, ca uses them to cra sh. It also doe s not hit them ri ght away, so they aren't aware of how dru nk they are really getti ng, so they keep drinking. These factors all contribute to the ri sks of alco hol poisoning, drunk driving, and committing or becoming vic tim s of sex ual assault. Many co lle ge st udent s ha ve bee n hos pitali zed after cons uming Fo ur Loko. In Nove mber, The Food and Dr ug Administration deemed caffeinated alcoholic drinks such as Four Loko "un safe and ill egal." It is und ersta ndabl e why thi s product is so popu lar: it's cheap, the ca ns it comes in are hu ge, it comes in severa l different fl avors, a nd th e ca ffein e in it keeps the drinker awake a nd ene rgized. Now all of that is good and well, but th e drink is twelve percent alcohol, whereas most beer's alcohol content is a nywhere from four to five pe rcent alcohol.

The creators of the beverage, Phusion

Projects, hav e since agreed to take out the caffeine and rem ove other substa nces from the product. As a resu lt of making thi s drink illegal , man y of age cons umer s began to stock up on Four Loko s in an atte mpt to se ll it on th e black market to eager consumers. Days after the dr in k was decla red ill egal, li quor sto res around American a nd Geo rgetown Univ ersi t ies saw a "s ur ge in sa les" and an increased demand in the product. Th e ba nning of Fou r Loko was a wise de cision. There are e nou gh problems among Ame ri ca's youth co ncerning bin ge drinking , and a caffeinated alcohol ic drink do es not he lp the is sue. It is just too dangerou s for co llege kid s a nd hi gh sc ho ol stud ents who a re j ust tr yin g to fit in , not truly noticin g the seve rity and consequence s that co me in a tw enty- three oun ce can. Looking at th e facts , th e idea of Four Loko is just , well loco
