Untamed is a pavilion that aims to disrupt the carefully curated sight of Manitoga. After researching Manitoga, we realized that there were contradictions between the narrative presented by Russel Wright and his foundation to describe the way in which the existing site was acquired to become the space for his studio and home, and the implications behind the actual actions that were committed to the site. Wright’s foundation present ideas of ‘natural’ living. In its promotion of engagement with ‘nature’ to visitors it puts forward the idea that Wright was one with nature.

However, we have found that there was an exploitation and a violent domestication of surrounding environment. For example, the redirected stream, the cutting of unwanted trees to create a field, and the selection of specific elements to bring into his own house or to create a particular path within nature is a deliberate man-made, ordered curation that is not ‘natural’ at all.

Our pavilion aims to rebel against these actions. It acts as disruptive mass that is placed on the different curated sites. Through different sized pockets it aims to engage and facilitate the growth of ‘unwanted’ elements (for example weed, dirt and puddles). By doing so, the pavilion explores and engages with what is outside of our own ‘conceptions of nature’ or the other side of ‘nature’ which humans and Wright tried to tame or escape from.

Conctruction Process: Mcckups were tested to understand the behavior of the self-supportive structural loop system. Loops were erected in a series of rows starting at the base. The visibility of joints was minimized through the use of transparent ties placed on the interior of concave parts.

The tension between the Native American and the settler is highlighted as opposing groups who had to devise strategic methods of watching each other and plotting to attack in order to protect their own means. The type of observation displayed by the Native American as based on the Pocahontas movie is portrayed as a sneaky, agility, mostly screened behind foliage, a tactic of tip-toeing and fleeting in nature.

In order to understand the Native American struggle of hiding while watching the new intruders on their land, this intervention aims to create a surveillance lair, building a trap out of the served and servant spaces to create a system of camouflage within the logic of the site by defining weak points of vulnerability. Specifically, the areas in the site which are most clear of trees are used to peek the intervention toward the desired view of the quarry and the relatively denser area has a structure hovering above ground to be disguised by the tree canopy. The intervention is elevated from the ground, making minimal contact with the earth to allow passage below and restrain access of intruders to the space above.

Floor Plan: open floor spaces are a result of the unravelling of the shell-like walls along the perimeter of the cone. This creates an interior circulation that allows concealing and discovery both from the opening and when moving from one space to another.

Construction: pods are created through the compaction of earthen materials on the exterior and are a combination of rounded shells on the interior which unravel from within to create spaces.

Challenging the traditional typology of the library as a single, enclosed entity, this project offers multiple fissures which create an open-air split in section between large, enclosed spaces becoming active, architectural moments, opening up to allow fluidity between the indoor and outdoor public space. The typology of the proposed library is injected with the experience created by historical Parisian Arcades, meant to encourage the habitat of the Flâneur or the wanderer within the city. These spaces become the a manifestation of the interstitial fabric of the neighborhood as the permeable connection between two programmed spaces as well as grafting the project into the site through the implementation of transitory, buffer zones into the building. The interior space is a mixture of wide floor space, grafted onto tighter spaces within the poche of the skin which transfers over across the open-air fissures into a different spatial allocation - each space embracing the other so that it becomes impossible to completely separate them.

MH Material Textures: studies of geometric character using plaster and paint to project and manipulate seams along surfaces. The exploration led to a treatment of facade that blurs the distinction between habitable fissures and openings to allow light.

Dumbo Brooklyn is quickly becoming a technological, industrial hub. As demographics of residents are rapidly evolving to meet the employment need, this super block aims to blend the neighboring low-income housing with the young professionals of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle.

The concept of LoLux is understood as a system of dense social structure with an opportunity for communication which is typically elevated to the maximum extreme in the urban intensity of NYC. Luxury is here defined as the indulgence to impart or exchange information or news.

Within the exposed circulatory arteries of the building, there are possibilities for semi-public ‘living rooms’ along the elevated corridors. The intervention drives residents to interact and engage the informal place of encounter within the ‘Laubengang’ and open air terraces. Bauhaus architect, Hannes Meyer’s design of the balcony-access housing was “putting the needs of the people before the need for luxury”, but a reinterpretation of this organizational logic in the present day has actually flipped this dynamic. The hyper stratified configuration of space will discourage social isolation by centralizing the ‘living streets in the sky’.

Methods of urban planning are used to decipher the design of the city block. By reflecting the workings of an entire city, this block becomes a microcosm of something much grander than itself. It takes instruction from what makes a city work and expresses its notion of degrees of intensity at a smaller scale. A place for repose while being immersed in an energy-filled society, this block is designed with an open plan at the ground level where the street will flourish with public activities that fuel the street environment. The idea is to provide the block with a range of different levels of activity so that it may become a single, self-sufficient entity filled with opportunities for great encounters among citizens.

Inspired by the systematic human body, this piece takes its vertical shape and expresses itself as a composition of parts. Tectonic systems of more fragile materials articulate the most massive organizing armature which acts as a spine directing and holding together its components.

The distinct spaces nested within this vertical shell serve their function and shape each programmatic level of activity while merging together to serve a common purpose for the dancer. Each space was disected and assigned a characteristic defined by the actions meant to take place within, then synthesized into an elegant coordination of rhythmic structure.

Bringing together students and professors who were once divided by a high traffic street, this overpass was designed to inform the courtyard by way of social interaction. Through careful consideration of ground traffic and neighboring faรงade studies, this intervention flourished as an articulated, elevated bridge that not only traverses students from one building to another, but also allows for the street life to continue beneath.
