SERVING MARICOPA COUNTY

Valleywise Health has twelve Federally Qualified Community Health Centers and three Comprehensive Health Centers conveniently located throughout the Valley to provide primary and pediatric care and a wide array of specialty services depending on location. In addition to in-person appointments, Valleywise Health and our District Medical Group providers now offer telehealth appointments to better serve our patients.

When Maricopa County voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 480 in 2014, Valleywise Health was provided with the funds needed to expand and make dramatic improvements to our facilities to offer even better care that meets the unique needs of people across our diverse communities. In recent years, Valleywise Health has opened state-of-the-art facilities in South Phoenix/ Laveen, North Phoenix, Peoria, and West Maryvale.

Approximately 70 percent of Valleywise Health patients are financially vulnerable safety net patients who are uninsured, underinsured, or covered by AHCCCS, Arizona’s Medicaid program. As a result of the low reimbursement received for services, we have little or no operating income that we can invest in technologies and/or services that enhance our abilities to provide exceptional care. As such, we turn to the community to support our mission.

$54 MILLIONraised

Valleywise Health Foundation announced the successful completion of its four-year ALL IN for Valleywise Health Campaign. Led by co-chairs Nita and Phil Francis, this first major campaign effort more than doubled its original campaign goal, ending 2023 with $54,123,689 raised.

The ALL IN Campaign supported program and patient needs and helped augment voter-approved bonds designated solely for renovating and rebuilding aging facilities. The philanthropic dollars raised supported burn survivorship care at the new Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center – Valleywise Health; innovative behavioral health programs, such as the evidence-based First Episode Center; teaching Arizona’s future healthcare professionals through Valleywise Health's partnership in the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance; and caring for the community by serving all who seek care, regardless of their ability to pay.

We are delighted to share this news and forever grateful to all who stepped in to change the future of community health in Arizona,” said ALL IN co-chairs Nita and Phil Francis. “ When people understand the unique role Valleywise Health plays in the Valley and that supporting the public teaching health system benefits communities and hospitals throughout the region, they are eager to learn more and get involved. The critical need for philanthropy at Valleywise Health doesn’t end here, but this significant community investment, along with modern new facilities, signals to the country that metro Phoenix believes community health matters.

The campaign culminated with the new 10-story Valleywise Health Medical Center, which opened in June 2024. The new acute care hospital has replaced the legacy teaching hospital, which opened in 1971.

Valleywise Health Foundation extends its gratitude to these committed community members whose unwavering support propelled the organization to this historic fundraising milestone.

HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER VALLEYWISE the new is open

Keeping our Promise to the Community

On June 13, we opened the doors of the new Valleywise Health Medical Center, welcoming patients to a facility light years ahead of the old “county” hospital in technology and comfort.

It stands as a symbol of hope for our community, and the completion of a promise we made to Maricopa County voters who overwhelmingly supported a $935 million bond measure to build a new public teaching hospital and network of community health centers.

We broke ground on the new Valleywise Health Medical Center in 2020 right before the pandemic and faced major labor shortage and supply chain challenges. Yet we persisted in keeping our promise to the community and our employees – to build a hospital that provides high quality health care in a modern, dignified setting.

Patients who arrive at our new facility will find 233 private rooms that are larger and offer natural light and large spaces for visitors to share a pull-out sofa

and a picture window. An adjacent bathroom has a shower, an upgrade from the old hospital.

The Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center, the second busiest civilian burn center in the United States, occupies the entire fourth floor, with 72,000 square feet, nearly triple the size of the old unit. It has 16 adult ICU beds, 24 adult acute care beds and 10 pediatric ICU/acute care beds, playrooms for children and teens with burn injuries and a large wellness area for physical and occupational therapy.

Our Level I Trauma Center is dramatically larger, and new adult and pediatric emergency departments provide 88 private treatment rooms.

Despite these advancements, our historic mission remains the same – to provide exceptional care to the underserved in our community. It is a legacy that began in 1877, when the county first began providing indigent care, and one that we proudly continue today.

GRAND OPENING OF THE VIRGINIA G. PIPER CHARITABLE TRUST PAVILION

The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Pavilion opened in the fall of 2023 and now serves as a new learning and teaching hub at Valleywise Health’s Phoenix campus at 24th Street and Roosevelt. This space is made possible through the generosity of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. Clinical education is housed on three dedicated floors of the six-story 106,088 squarefoot facility in addition to administrative services and community meeting space for up to 300.

This pivotal $3.2 million gift was in addition to a $2.5 million unrestricted Piper Trust Now is the Moment Grant in 2021, and $500,000 from the Trust in COVID-19 response funding in 2020.

PEDIATRIC DOC TALK HIGHLIGHTS WHAT MAKES VALLEYWISE HEALTH PEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT DIFFERENT

In the fall of 2023, Dr. Jodi Carter and Charmaine Jackson shared invaluable insights into the remarkable work of the Valleywise Health pediatrics department at our first Doc Talk.

Their dedication to the well-being of our youngest patients is truly inspiring. Dr. Carter explains, I felt called to work at a place that was not just a hospital, but an entire health system that takes care of children, one where we could really make an impact from the moment of birth so that we start these children, and these at-risk children, on a journey to set them up with their families for success.

A NIGHT IN THE VALLEY 2023 RAISED OVER $1 MILLION TO SUPPORT THE MISSION

Our largest annual philanthropic event, A Night in the Valley, supported patient and program needs for the new state-of-the-art Valleywise Health Medical Center. Guests enjoyed live music by Tyler Dial, Mark Tarbell and Generation Radio and celebrated our healthcare heroes at Valleywise Health. The 2023 event raised over $1 million, benefitting the Valleywise Health mission to provide exceptional care, without exception, every patient, every time.

A BRIDGE TO HOPE WOMEN’S LUNCHEON

A Bridge to Hope Women’s Luncheon is a celebration of those who show courage and resilience in the face of adversity. The 2024 event featured the Ryan family, who overcame unbelievable hardships thanks to their own determination and the outstanding support of their care team at the world-class Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health.

VALLEYWISE HEALTH FAMILY RESOURCE CENTERS DISTRIBUTE BACKPACKS TO FAMILIES IN NEED

Thanks to our donors and sponsors, we’re helping children in the Valley start the upcoming school year healthy and ready to learn. In the summer of 2023, we raised over $45,000, distributing over 2,800 backpacks through our eight Valleywise Health Family Resource Centers (FRC), and in 2024, we achieved recordbreaking fundraising numbers, raising over $75,000 and impacting over 3,000 children. The funds raised support families like the Zamoras. "Our family has benefited from the backpack drive and FRC curriculum for the past four years, taking part in music and fitness classes, as well as child development programs."

AZIZI FAMILY’S PATH TO belongingWITH VALLEYWISE HEALTH FOUNDATION

For the Azizi family, resettlement was filled with obstacles. Roya, a mother of four, fled Afghanistan, seeking refuge. Their journey took them from Afghanistan to Germany, New Mexico, and finally, Arizona.

Adjusting to American culture and transportation was challenging. However, the Azizi Family eventually settled into a new home, enrolled the children in school, and secured a car and a primary care physician. Edris, the eldest, embraced his new life, learning English and acting as a translator for his mom. In 2023, 16-year-old Edris was hit by a car while riding his bike to the store. He broke his arm and was treated in the emergency department at Valleywise Health. The healthcare professionals treated him with empathy and compassion, helping him heal not only physically but also emotionally. As a parent, Roya's heart sank when she saw her son Edris injured and in pain after the accident. In

that moment, her worries and fears for her children's safety surged, wondering how they would pay for his care and treatment. Thankfully, the Azizi family had already set up a primary care physician with Valleywise Health and knew where to go in their time of need. The doctors, nurses, and cultural health navigators went above and beyond to ensure Edris would recover quickly. It was a pivotal moment where Roya felt a deep appreciation for the welcoming community that had embraced them, understanding they were not alone.

The family now relies on Valleywise Health for their medical needs, feeling safe and supported by the caring community.

The Azizi family's resilience is an inspiration, and with community support, they have embraced new dreams in their new home.

Each year, Valleywise Health serves close to 16,000 refugees, representing 69 different countries speaking more than 71 languages.

I am very grateful to be safe here in the United States, and for all the care my family has received at Valleywise Health. – Edris.

A LIFE WORTH LIVING

Mental illness can affect anyone, at any time. Holly, a fourth-generation Arizonan from Mesa, lived her dream as a student and athlete at Utah Valley State College until mental health issues forced her to reevaluate her priorities.

“I started experiencing the symptoms of depression and bipolar disorder when I was a junior in college,” said Holly. “I was overwhelmed with the pressures of sports and school. One day, I drove myself up a mountain and brought along a bottle of painkillers and five bottles of sleeping pills with the intention of overdosing. I woke up the next morning on the trail, disoriented and unable to move. It was really scary.”

After treatment and a year of medication and therapy, Holly found a “new normal”, but didn’t realize bipolar disorder requires lifelong treatment. Struggling with self-medication, Holly dropped out of college and abused drugs. At 23, she entered substance abuse treatment and was assigned to a SMI (Severe Mental Illness) team.

After several years of private treatment, Holly was referred to the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program at Valleywise Health, which supports patients with serious mental illnesses. “The ACT team at Valleywise is incredibly compassionate,” Holly said. “My quality of life has greatly improved since I began working with them.”

Today, Holly is involved with the 12-step community. Sharing her story about recovery and serving others through volunteerism motivates her to get out of bed each day.

Mental health programs are historically underfunded. By helping fund a program like ACT at Valleywise Health, donors are giving people the opportunity to recover and live a life worth living. For that, I am forever grateful. – Holly.

Our Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program provides 24-hour, comprehensive support to almost 100 members with serious mental illness, including medication assistance, counseling, recovery education, peer and family support, housing and employment assistance, skills training, and crisis intervention.

As a patient, I always remember Valleywise Health fondly because the doctors and nurses are so fantastic,” said Anne. “They are gracious, concerned and caring, not just to patients but to family members, too. From the custodians to the doctors, nurses and medical students, the team is unbeatable.

CATHY AND BILL HURTLE

We have a daughter living in the San Francisco area, who has educated us on the challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces when it comes to health care due to stigma, bias and discrimination. When looking for an organization to support here in metro Phoenix, we were directed to the Valleywise Community Health Center - McDowell. We were touched by the compassion, dignity and professional care provided by the team at the McDowell Center to all its patients. We are so honored to support their mission.

Program Coordinator & Patient Valleywise Community Health Center – McDowell

After receiving a sudden, life-altering HIV diagnosis, Noah found community and empowerment at the Valleywise Community Health Center – McDowell. The compassionate staff at the McDowell Clinic provided not only medical care but also educated and supported him through his journey.

I grew more comfortable and confident with my diagnosis and it ultimately inspired me to help those in similar situations.

Noah joined the McDowell Clinic team as a program coordinator in 2019. In this role, he meets with recently diagnosed patients, offering them crucial support, education and connections to community resources. This holistic approach to HIV care is designed to help patients achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle despite their diagnosis.

Behavioral health impacts the entire community, which is why additional funding is so important. Mental health is not a you-or-me issue—it’s an everyone issue. It touches each and every one of us in some way, shape, or form.

We are proud to say that 717 Valleywise Health employees and DMG providers generously supported the Leave Your Mark Challenge, changing the way we look at health care in the Valley and bringing expanded resources to the most vulnerable in the community through new and renovated state-of-the-art facilities.

MEET THAMELA BROWN

Pediatric Emergency Department Technician

Thamela Brown, a Navajo Nation member, recalls her family’s journey to Phoenix when her uncle suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound. Arriving at Valleywise Health, she noticed the Pediatric Emergency Room sign and expressed her desire to work there due to her love for children.

Every nurse, every provider, anyone who made contact with him showed compassion. The gratitude was so comforting, especially in explaining relevant information to my parents. Healthcare providers being honest, with open communication, while engaging them in every concern, answering all their questions and acknowledging any concerns that they might have had was also comforting. Their commitment to patient care was recognized. I knew from that point that my uncle was in good hands and he was getting the best care possible. What I witnessed here at Valleywise made me feel I could fit right in.

DR. BRYAN ROTH

The reason to get care in this facility 100 times over is because you know the level of the training that these physicians have, the type of patients that they have. If I'm in a car accident, for example, I can trust who's taking care of me.

What I'm looking forward to with the new hospital being completed is almost like a rebirth. It's like this like new energy that you can literally feel it.

One of the reasons for contributing and giving to Valleywise Health Foundation is because this place is like my family. I tell people all the time I grew up at Valleywise. It’s nice to see something built and blossom right in front of you. And we're all lucky to be a part of it.

PARTNERS our proud

We raise money to support the Valleywise Health mission –to provide exceptional care, without exception, every patient, every time – regardless of the neighborhood you live in or your ability to pay.

Brandon B. and Paige Rafi of Rafi Law Group have pledged a $500,000 gift to Valleywise Health Foundation to support the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at the new Valleywise Health Medical Center.

Paige and I are honored to make this multi-year pledge to Valleywise Health,” said Rafi, founder of the Rafi Law Group. “This new facility and its caring and committed medical professionals mean children and families across the Valley will have access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial means. Healing our children is an act of hope and we are proud to invest in the health and well-being of our community’s kids.

Valleywise Health Foundation is grateful for a $1.75 million gift from District Medical Group (DMG), the physician group serving all of Valleywise Health, for critical patient and program needs at Valleywise Health.

DMG physicians not only serve the health care needs of our community’s most vulnerable, but also share their expertise and passion as teaching faculty for tomorrow’s health care leaders,” said Valleywise Health President and CEO Steve Purves. “District Medical Group physicians have provided exceptional, compassionate care at Valleywise Health for nearly 30 years. We value their continued partnership and look forward to putting this significant financial gift to use as we transform our public teaching health system to better care for those who need us most. We are grateful for this partnership and very significant gift.

Thunderbirds Charities contributed $500,000 in support of the Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit located inside the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center.

The Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit is a secured wing with private patient rooms, as well as both a pediatric playroom and dedicated teen room designed to give young patients a safe space to regain a sense of normalcy during their hospitalization. All areas are staffed by Child Life specialists, specially trained to address the needs of pediatric patients and their families in the hospital. A unique feature in the new Halle Arizona Burn Center is a state-of-the-art Wellness Center for rehabilitation therapy to support long-term physical and emotional survivorship care.

CVS Health pledged more than $3 million in new grants to support organizations in Phoenix working to increase equitable access to health care, address social determinants of health and educate the community on the effects of air pollution. This includes a multi-year award of $2.1 million to support Valleywise Health's expansion of diabetes management and nutrition support services for Spanish-speaking patients living in the South Phoenix community, as part of a national Health Zone initiative.

CVS Health's efforts are a testament to its belief that providing the right resources can transform health outcomes, reduce generational health inequities, and improve the quality of life for entire communities.
