We’re grateful for the opportunity to share stories and experiences through an exciting film program reflecting on ideas connected to Reconciliation Week, Pride Month, NAIDOC Week and Refugee Week. We’re also thrilled to be inviting incredible writers to delve into their work and practice, with guests including, Evelyn Araluen, Jeanine Leane, Sara M Saleh, Jaclyn Crupi, Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson.

Reconciliation Week - InMyBloodItRuns Film Screening

This Reconciliation Week, join us for a free film screening of In My Blood It Runs, a powerful feature documentary following ten-year-old Dujuan, an Arrernte and Garawa boy.

Dujuan is a healer and hunter who speaks three languages. He shares his view of history and the complex world around him, showing spark and intelligence, yet is "failing" in school. Dujuan's family fight to give him a strong Arrernte education alongside his western education and we walk with him as he realises that not only has he inherited the trauma and dispossession of his land, but also the resilience and resistance of many generations of his people.

Following the film, Dujuan, became the youngest ever to address the UN Human Rights Council, where he called for raising Australia's minimum age of criminal responsibility to 14, aligning with the UN Declaration of Indigenous Rights, and for First Nations languages to be taught in schools.

How Stories Change Between Forms

You’ve read the book, you’ve seen the movie and you’ve noticed differences. Get involved in this adaptation-focused book and film dicussion to dig a little deeper, consider the transition from page to screen and find out what might have influenced the changes in the story between forms.

In Pride Month, we will explore Taichi Yamada's 1987 ghost story Strangers alongside its latest adaptation, Andrew Haigh's All of Us Strangers (2023).

Warm Winter Reading Circle with Sara M Saleh

Designed by the Queer community for the Queer community, come along to the Queer Book Group to read and discuss books by gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual and queer voices.

Facilitated by a member of the LGBTIQA+ community, book group members can discuss whichever books they've been reading with a book list available to provide inspiration when selecting your next read. This alcoholfree event will introduce you to new Queer reads and like-minded Queer folk.

In the lead up to NAIDOC Week, join Evelyn Araluen in conversation with Jeanine Leane.

Evelyn and Jeanine will be available to sign books afterwards, and The Sun Bookshop will have copies of their books available for purchase. A light dinner will be served.

About Evelyn Araluen:

Evelyn Araluen is a poet, researcher and co-editor of Overland Literary Journal. Evelyn's debut collection of poetry Dropbear won the 2022 Stella Prize. Born and raised on Dharug country, she is a descendant of the Bundjalung Nation.

About Jeanine Leane:

Jeanine Leane is a Wiradjuri writer, poet and academic from south-west New South Wales. Jeanine taught Creative Writing and Aboriginal Literature at the University of Melbourne, where she is currently First Nations Writer in Residence. Her latest publication is the poetry collection Gawimarra: Gathering.

Refugee Week: ByeByeTiberias Film Screening

Transporting audiences through time and memory, filmmaker Lina Soualem shares the courageous stories of four generations of Palestinian women in her family. The film documents the experience of Soualem and her mother Hiam Abbass (Succession) as they return to Palestine 30 years after her mother left to follow her dream of becoming an actress. Together, they reconnect with family and journey through the vanished landscapes, uncovering enduring legacies of resilience. This is an exclusive opportunity to see Bye Bye Tiberias after its recent Australian premiere at the Palestinian Film Festival.

Palestinian snacks will be served.

Celebrate Pride Month at a special screening of Goran Stovlevski’s queer coming-of-age drama.

A strikingly suburban and very Melbourne film, Of an Age (2023) focuses on a moment in the summer of 1999. Arriving at the end of his school years, 18-year-old Serbian-Australian amateur ballroom dancer, Kol experiences an unexpected and intense 24-hour romance with his best friend’s older brother.

Join us this NAIDOC Week for a special screening of Jub Clerc’s multi awardwinning debut feature.

Sweet As (2022) follows Murra, a young Indigenous teenager, forced through family circumstances to join a group program for troubled youth. Taken on a ‘photo safari’ through the stunning scenery of Pilbara country the trip is a chance for all the teenagers to engage with country. Issues bubble to the surface, but the experience enables them to see different pathways for their lives.

We have specialist collections including books for all ages, magazines and DVDs in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Spanish and Vietnamese.

We also have eBooks in Spanish and Chinese available through our catalogue as well as digital magazines and newspapers in many community languages.

You can access various community language newspapers at library branches. These include Australian Chinese Daily, Il Globo, Ta Nea, Neos Kosmos and El Espanol en Australia.

Auslan Bilingual Story Time

Nurture a love of reading and help develop early literacy in both Auslan and English at our Auslan Bilingual Story Time. Each session is presented in Auslan by a Deaf storyteller along with a children’s librarian who will present in English.

Suitable for all children aged 3-5 including deaf and hard of hearing children, their families, and carers.

Presented in partnership with Deaf Children Australia and supported by the Victorian Multicultural Storytime Program. Note, Auslan Bilingual Story Time will replace the English language Story Time sessions in Term 3.
