Maria Rosa Of Portuguese nationality, was born in Mozambique in 1973.

De nacionalidade portuguesa, nasceu em Moçambique em 1973.

Grew up in Sintra and her training took place between the António Arroio artistic school and the Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva Foundation, where she worked for many years in the area of conservation and restoration of tiles.

No dia que me reuni com a Ana Carolina, na Luka Art Gallery e recebi o seu convite para participar nesta exposição, saí do palácio Biester com um vendaval de ideias a assolarme a mente, a cada segundo uma nova conceção, uma nova criação. Este universo foi se ampliando e decorridos três dias eu percebi a impossibilidade total de, nos meses de execução concluir todas as ideias (e, confesso, também acredito que não haveria espaço físico para tal).

The day I met Ana Carolina at the Luka Art Gallery and received her invitation to take part in this exhibition, I left the Biester Palace with a gale of ideas raging through my mind, every second a new concept, a new creation. This universe expanded and after three days I realised that it would be completely impossible to complete all the ideas in the months to come (and, I confess, I also believe that there would be no physical space to do so).

Assim, algumas ideias foram delicadamente guardadas na gaveta (onde aguardam pacientemente o seu tempo de vir ao mundo) e selecionei aquelas que, nos meses de execução disponíveis, seriam viáveis.

So some ideas were gently put away in the drawer (where they patiently await their time to come into the world) and I selected those that would be feasible in the available months of execution.

A minha vontade era criar um oceano em cerâmica. Tantas formas, texturas, cores. O mar é para mim uma fonte de inspiração sem fim. Concentrei-me então na seleção de peças que agora pode contemplar.

My desire was to create a ceramic ocean. So many shapes, textures and colours. The sea is an endless source of inspiration for me. So I concentrated on the selection of pieces that you can now see.

Com uma humildade sincera, pretendo transmitir um pouco da forma, textura, cor, leveza, luz e movimento, aquela sensação de paz, de uma magia inexplicável, permanente e eterna. As peças apresentadas foram executadas em diversas técnicas e com diversas argilas, que vão da faiança passando pelo grés até á porcelana. Usei primordialmente a porcelana pelo facto de ser translucida e de nos transportar mais prontamente ao universo marinho. Como as marés, em constante mutação, criei estas obras imaginando-as em movimento, não só pelo seu próprio movimento mas também pela capacidade de se adaptarem ao espaço e á sua finalidade.

With sincere humility, I intend to convey a little of the shape, texture, colour, lightness, light and movement, that feeling of peace, of an inexplicable, permanent and eternal magic. The pieces presented were made using different techniques and different clays, ranging from earthenware to stoneware to porcelain. I primarily used porcelain because it is translucent and transports us more readily to the marine universe. Like the constantly changing tides, I created these works imagining them in motion, not only because of their own movement but also because of their ability to adapt to the space and their purpose.

A Luka Art Gallery abre os salões do Palácio Biester em uma homenagem ao Mar Português. Com uma perspetiva intrinsecamente regional, ao apresentar 3 artistas de Sintra, Madalena Braddell, Maria Rosa e Vitor Bonifácio Ribeiro, revela-se ao numa intenção de expansão, tal como os grandes navegadores, mas agora com a arte desta pequena e mágica vila, que atravessa fronteiras e alcança o mundo sob a citação da literatura clássica portuguesa, que faz presença marcante em todo o conceito da exposição.

É tempo de imersão em nós mesmos e no mais profundo dos nossos anseios. Não um caminhar em águas rasas, mas um mergulho nas profundezas da alma. Nesta introspeção, a curadora Ana Carolina Azevedo, faz uma metáfora na busca do realizar, onde o mar não é uma barreira e sim um caminho de travessia. Das janelas do Palácio Biester avista-se o Oceano Atlântico, e o Cabo da Roca, ponto mais extremo do continente europeu onde as palavras de Camões estão impressas na pedra, mas também no inconsciente português, na perseverança e coragem pela busca dos sonhos e o descobrimento de novos mundos, principal mensagem que os grandes navegadores imortalizaram.

Luka Art Gallery opens the halls of Palácio Biester in homage to the Portuguese Sea. With an intrinsically regional perspective, by presenting three artists from Sintra, Madalena Braddell, Maria Rosa and Vitor Bonifácio Ribeiro, the intention is to expand, just like the great navigators, but now with the art of this small, magical town, which crosses borders and reaches the world under the citation of classic Portuguese literature, which is a striking presence in the whole concept of the exhibition.

It's time to immerse ourselves in the depths of our desires. Not a walk in shallow waters, but a dive into the depths of the soul. In this introspection, curator Ana Carolina Azevedo makes a metaphor for the search for fulfilment, where the sea is not a barrier but a way through. From the windows of the Biester Palace you can see the Atlantic Ocean and Cabo da Roca, the most extreme point of the European continent where Camões' words are imprinted in stone, but also in the Portuguese unconscious, in perseverance and courage in the pursuit of dreams and the discovery of new worlds, the main message that the great navigators immortalised.

O olhar reflete a paz e a plenitude das ondas, que rebentam nas rochas numa constante singular, entre as cores do céu a quase a fundir-se no horizonte. O caminhar pela areia e molhar os pés, a sentir o vento a emaranhar os cabelos, as gaivotas a dominar o céu, numa opulência singela à paisagem da cidade, que permanece a mesma, aquarelada entre os anos resilientes de espera e contemplação, de apenas desfrutar a continuidade dos dias. Na fragilidade de uma porcelana, as medusas das águas profundas iluminam-se para um novo por do sol que se renova constantemente por toda a vida, alem dos tempos. Como em um cenário utópico, em pinceladas a transportar-nos muito alem dos limites das águas.

The gaze reflects the peace and fullness of the waves, which break on the rocks in a singular constant, among the colours of the sky almost merging on the horizon. Walking along the sand and getting your feet wet, feeling the wind tangle your hair, the seagulls dominating the sky, in a simple opulence to the city's landscape, which remains the same, watercoloured between the resilient years of waiting and contemplation, of just enjoying the continuity of the days. In the fragility of porcelain, the jellyfish of the deep waters light up for a new sunset that is constantly renewed for life, beyond time. As if in a utopian scenario, in brushstrokes transporting us far beyond the limits of the waters.

O Palacio Biester

O Palácio Biester está localizado no coração de Sintra, uma das principais rotas culturais de Portugal, sendo parte integrante do sumptuoso cenário que tornou a vila famosa enquanto capital mundial do romantismo.

Edificado durante as ultimas décadas do sec. XVX, o monumento foi projetado pelo arquiteto português José Luís Monteiro e decorado pelos melhores artistas da época, nomeadamente , Luigi Manini e Leandro de souza Braga, entre outros. A riqueza das influencias estilísticas que denota resulta num conjunto de grande importância histórica e artística, perfeitamente integrado no espirito romântico da paisagem em que está inserido, ao mesmo tempo que se afirma como um dos expoentes máximos da modernidade no final do seculo, marcado por um funcionalismo de vanguarda e pela ousadia do seu programa decorativo.

O palácio está envolvido pelo majestoso parque Biester, um verdadeiro Éden de espécies arbóreas raras e exuberantes, magistralmente concebido pelo paisagista francês, François Nogré, no qual abundam as zonas frescas e os cursos de água, favorecido ainda pela existência de dois magníficos miradouros, de onde é possível avistar o Castelo dos Mouros, ou obter uma vista deslumbrante até ao mar.

The Biester Palace is located in the heart of Sintra, one of Portugal's main cultural routes, and is an integral part of the sumptuous setting that has made the town famous as the world capital of romanticism.

Built during the last decades of the 15th century, the monument was designed by the Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro and decorated by the best artists of the time, namely Luigi Manini and Leandro de Souza Braga, among others. The richness of its stylistic influences results in a complex of great historical and artistic importance, perfectly integrated into the romantic spirit of the landscape in which it is located, while at the same time asserting itself as one of the leading exponents of modernity at the end of the century, marked by avant-garde functionalism and the boldness of its decorative programme.

The palace is surrounded by the majestic Biester Park, a veritable Eden of rare and exuberant tree species, masterfully designed by the French landscaper François Nogré, in which cool areas and watercourses abound, also favoured by the existence of two magnificent viewpoints from which it is possible to see the Moorish Castle or obtain a breathtaking view of the sea.
