Report to the People 2016 Kentucky Chautauqua®
Chautauqua in the Schools
Speakers Bureau
In its relatively short existence, Kentucky Chautauqua has become the most popular program offered by Kentucky Humanities. In 2016, our Kentucky Chautauquans brought 184 programs to community organizations throughout Kentucky — libraries, church groups, book clubs, historical societies, association meetings, and college campuses, to name a few. More than 16,000 people attended Kentucky Chautauqua programs last year. Gathered audiences experienced Kentucky stories including Henry Clay’s life in politics, Adolph Rupp’s legendary basketball career, and Colonel Sanders’ road to success. Since Kentucky Chautauqua began in 1992, Kentucky Humanities has brought to life more than 70 figures from Kentucky’s past. Six new dramas will be available for booking in August.
In 2004, Kentucky Humanities began delivering Kentucky Chautauqua programs to classrooms throughout the Commonwealth, providing educators an innovative and affordable way to teach their students about Kentucky’s unique history and culture. Our 29 Chautauqua dramas cover topics including Colonial Days, the Civil War, slavery, Kentucky music, and civil rights, providing students with a unique experience that is both educational and entertaining. Last year our Kentucky Chautauquans delivered 265 programs to schools all over the state, reaching more than 23,000 Kentucky students. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and underwriters, Kentucky Chautauquans can visit elementary, middle, and high school classrooms throughout Kentucky at minimal cost to the schools.
Kentucky Humanities developed a Speakers Bureau in 1986. Since its beginning, Speakers Bureau members have given nearly 5,200 presentations to more than 250,000 people. As one of our longest running programs, the Speakers Bureau continues to expand and to be in demand throughout the state. Our 2016 Speakers Bureau featured a diverse group of 51 Kentucky scholars, authors, and historians, offering more than 100 talks on everything from poetry, religion, bourbon, music, horses, to history. Members of our Speakers Bureau gave 89 presentations to community groups throughout the Commonwealth last year. More than 4,000 people attended these talks.

PRIME TIME Family Reading Time is a family literacy program that uses the humanities to create excitement about reading and discussing books. Prime Time seeks to engage families with low income, low literacy skills, and limited or no English language abilities. The program is designed for parents and their 6- to 10-year-old children who are at risk due to poor reading ability. Prime Time allows families to bond around the act of reading and transforms them into lifelong readers. In 2016, we sponsored 10 Prime Time Family Reading Time programs in nine counties. Nearly 1,600 Kentuckians participated in the family literacy program. In 13 years, Kentucky Humanities has sponsored 195 programs throughout the Commonwealth, impacting more than 10,900 people.
Kentucky Humanities magazine provides readers with unique stories of Kentucky’s history, culture, and people. In 2016, we distributed more than 44,000 copies of the magazine, reaching readers in every Kentucky county. In addition to delivering Kentucky Humanities to mailboxes across the Commonwealth, the magazine can also be found in the guest rooms at all of Kentucky’s state parks. The Humanities Catalog offers an overview of the presentations available through our Speakers Bureau and Kentucky Chautauqua®. From talks about Kentucky cuisine, horse racing in the Bluegrass, and the Civil War, to Chautauqua presentations including Abraham Lincoln and Pee Wee Reese, the Humanities Catalog details programs perfect for your classroom or community group. More than 7,000 copies of the Humanities Catalog were distributed in 2016.

Since our founding in 1972, Kentucky Humanities, with the assistance of the National Endowment for the Humanities, has awarded grants for humanities programming. In 44 years, we have distributed nearly $8 million for public humanities programs throughout the state. Public humanities programs include: conferences, lectures, radio and video productions, exhibits, teacher training and development of curricular materials, interpretive programs for festivals, and book discussions. The humanities are fields of study primarily concerned with values, ideas, and language, including, but not limited to: history, literature, philosophy, language, linguistics, jurisprudence, archaeology, history and philosophy of art, medicine or science, folklore, religious studies, and those aspects of the social sciences which employ a philosophical or historical approach. Turn the page for a complete listing of grants awarded in 2016.

Report to the People 2016 Kentucky Book Fair Previously operated by a nonprofit independent board of volunteers, Kentucky Humanities took over management of the Kentucky Book Fair in 2016. Since its beginning in 1981, the Kentucky Book Fair has been Kentucky’s premier annual literary event. Featuring more than 175 authors from Kentucky and around the country, the book fair connects readers of all ages with well-known writers and new favorites. Around 3,500 people from Kentucky and surrounding states attend the Kentucky Book Fair every November to purchase signed books, participate in panel discussions, and attend keynote presentations. In addition to celebrating the writers and poets of Kentucky, the Kentucky Book Fair has brought many nationally-known journalists, politicians, historians, athletes, actors, poets, and novelists to the Commonwealth. The Kentucky Book Fair is produced by Kentucky Humanities, with the support of donors, sponsors, community partners, and volunteers.
KBF Kids Day is a day-long event dedicated to Kentucky students in grades 3 through 12. Students can interact with 30-plus children’s and young adult authors in an informal environment. Students in elementary and middle school participate in several engaging, age-appropriate programs throughout the day. High school students participate in a humanities Master Class with a nationally-known scholar, followed by lunch and further discussion with the “master.”

Report to the People 2016 We are grateful to the University of Kentucky The University of Kentucky continues to be the Kentucky Humanities Council’s greatest benefactor. Since our founding in 1972, UK has provided us with our offices on its campus. All Kentuckians are beneficiaries of the university’s generosity because the money the Council would have spent on rent over the past 44 years has instead been invested in humanities programs across the Commonwealth. Since 1995, the beautiful century-old house at 206 East Maxwell Street has been the home of the Kentucky Humanities Council. We are grateful to the university as well as the many faculty members who have participated in our programs. Each of you has made valuable contributions to our mission of Telling Kentucky’s Story. Kentucky Humanities Council, Inc. 206 East Maxwell Street Lexington, KY 40508
Thank you to all of our sponsors who allow us to share the humanities throughout the Commonwealth
