Finally, y a note about g geography. g p y Some of yyou have noticed the button I’m wearing that says “We’re not the Valley.” Obviously, I’m talking about Silicon Valley.

I reject the idea that you have to be in Silicon Valley to be smart. Or to be creative. Or to put new technologies to work in creating American jobs.

It’ just It’s j t nott ttrue.

A lot of the technology press is lazy, and it’s easy to sit in San Francisco and just write stories about what’s happening at Stanford and Berkeley.

And those are great schools, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

Georgia Tech has over 100 years of history of helping industries in Georgia. The industries have changed – it used to be textiles and paper mills. Now it’s aerospace and logistics. In a few years, it may be nanotech and graphene. But we’re perfectly capable of growing significant manufacturing gb businesses here. Manyy of yyou in the audience will b be doing it. And we’ll be here to help.

EII has a veryy long g historyy of support pp to industrial d l development t iin th the state. t t T Today, d the th Industry I d t S Services i division includes three primary programs: GaMEP, GTPAC and SETAAC. The largest of these programs is the GaMEP which is part of a nationwide network of 59 MEP centers supported in part by NIST. The primary goals of the Industry Services division is to: •Improve the competitiveness of Georgia’s Small & Mid-Sized Manufacturing firms through growth strategies, process improvement and sustainable actions.

•Provide “on-site” technical assistance and continuing education to firms throughout the state.

•Increase federal & state government contracting revenue for Georgia firms.

This work is conducted throughout the state and the majority of staff are located off campus.

GaMEP Example: Thermal Ceramics – Augusta Based Insulation Manufacturer - ISO Certification (9001 update and 14001), Lean Manufacturing and Energy Efficiency, RESULTS: Increased sales of $6M, Reduced Costs by $2M, Reduced Energy Use by 22%.

GTPAC Example: Carlyle’s Corporate Food Service, a locally-owned catering and contract food service company in Atlanta. GTPAC Counselor Jerry Shadinger helped the company put together a technical proposal proposal, a cost proposal and a capabilities statement for government cafeteria services. The result was a five-year, $4.5 million contract.

The importance of our footprint and service throughout the state cannot be overstated.

Especially in the area of serving small and mid-sized manufacturers, we have engineers located throughout g the state p providing g hands-on,, on-site assistance.
