Renowned as the city that never sleeps, New York is in constant motion. Whether day or night, for business or pleasure, the city’s people are invariably active. However, there remains a decrease in nighttime vitality in one vast area in particular - Central Park. While the park is imperative to the city’s core, it lacks a chronic state of flux, due to its crimeful reputation. Over the past decade the crime rate has decreased, but the possibility of the park returning to its former condition has left citizens in hesitation, causing movement at night to remain limited.

By recycling old taxi’s - a common form of travel in the city - we provide an innovative way to reuse one of New York’s most historic symbols and to create instances throughout the park where New Yorkers may interact with their remains every day. As well, the lightscapes newly promotes Central Park as a night time destination that is safe and engages the entire city.

The taxicabs of New York are widely recognized icons of the city. In 2007, city officials outlined a project to replace existing Ford Crown Victoria taxis and others by 2014. This transition leaves tens of thousands of retired vehicles. The lightscapes provide a recycled solution that takes advantage of the aluminum and steel of the cars in a useful way. They promote a maintenance to the iconicism of the vehicles by allowing them to remain within the city in a new advantageous style.

The Portable In Classroom promotes with education through accessibility and collaboration Kelsey Malott and Samiha sustainability in response to environmental conditions within Bemidji, Minnesota.

Through an open plan and modular design, The Portable Classroom promotes diversity in education. Located in a low density hemiboreal environment with a low walkscore, relativity and proximity are relied upon for education - specifically through satellite schooling. With the use of a photovoltaic enclosure, a 6500 square foot microclimate is created within the site’s domain. Internal learning modules can then be incorporated and altered through the use of standardized internal wall panels, that run parallel to the surrounding structural grid. It is possible to create infinite iterations of internal learning module typologies and styles: permitting the space to be adapted and interchanged according to heat gain, sun paths, and privacy. This open plan modularity promotes education throughout all types of users, and is equally supportive of the diverse population visible within Bemidji. Sustainability measures through materiality and systems such as photovoltaic glass, solar panels, and a sustainable water system are capitalized to achieve a successful design.

MEASURE 1: Design and Innovation The Portable Classroom promotes education through accessibility and sustainability. Through modular design, the project attempts to supply a demand within Minnesota’s most distributed area. Its open concept promotes education throughout all types of users, and is equally supportive of the diverse population visible within Bemidji. The design considers the hemiboreal climate conditions, rarely populated area, and low walkscore through portability and materiality.

Sustainability measures through materiality and systems such as photovoltaic glass, solar panels, and a sustainable water system led to a better overall project design. Through site and ecology analysis, natural vegetation is capitalized through consideration of the pre-existing ecosystem.

MEASURE 2: Regional Design The City of Bemidji is the largest commerical center between Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Duluth, Minnesota, and lies on the southwest shore of Lake Bemidji - the northernmost lake feeding the Mississippi. The City has a total area of 14.14 square miles, with 1.22 being water. Within the 2010 census, Bemidji recorded a population of 13,431 - 19.4% of the residents being under the age of 18. Of that population 81.3% were White, 1.2% African American, 11.3% Native American, 1.4% Asian, and 4.8% Other. The City houses many Native American services, including the Indian Health Service. It is the central hub of the Red Lake Indian Reservation, White Earth Indian Reservation and Leech Lake Indian Reservation. The Portable Classroom promotes diversity through an open floor plan, respecting all forms of education. Through analysis of weather conditions, and a low walkscore, the Portable Classroom supports relativity and proximity, specifically through satellite schooling.

AGAINST THE GRAIN Residential Community

The result? A residential community where technology, collaboration and education brings the residents and the public together.

Where it began: Technology is most recently acknowledged as a series of modern advancements. It is in fact one of the largest growing and broadest industries today. But, there is a relation from our modern society to a time where mastering a skill or trade meant life or death: the ancient village.

How it works: Similarly to the village-scheme, the project is laid out around a central communal point; back then, the fire, now, the woodworkshop & kitchen. This formation was formerly meant to have the chief closest to the hearth and the community surrounding this heart.

This revived concept of the village, places the units in two successions fanning outward from the hub to allow for seamless circulation throughout the entire site. There are a total of 15 units on the site, 7 of them made up of 3 levels (living, kitchen + sleep) and 8 of which consist of 4 (+ studio). The idea of communal living is incorporated at two scales; a person scale: in ones home, and a public scale: in communal spaces.

The residence can create, live and socialize in their own personalized unit, and they alternatively have the opportunity to learn new trades or share their abilities with others in larger areas as well.

What does it do? The bridge between the roots of technology and the headway in current science is the availability to obtain the skillset to create something on one’s own. There are many streams of technology in which one can focus; this project concentrates on the angle of ‘Education’. The pivot of this site, the educational core, in which workshops and lessons may be held, embraces public accessibility and creates an affiliation with the residence of the building through proletariat interaction. These relationships continue up to a site where the idea of the hearth is most literally represented: the roof top pathway.

The green rooftop was created not only due to its environmental benifits but to introduce a new approach in educating the community through a more nomadic method. Skills tought may include starting fires, planting vegetation and speaking different languages in a calming setting.

LODGED IN FISSURE Peace & Reconciliation Center

Sitting on the highest point in Hartley Bay on the French River is my project - a Peace and Reconciliation Headquarters designed to immerse its guests in nature. The lodge offers the opportunity to experience natural elements in 3 forms : the trees, the sky and the rock. Immersion in the trees is allowed through the tree house cabin and the observation of wildlife in night and day. The sky cabin includes an operable rood to allow the occupants a full view of the night sky and doubles as an observation deck. Lastly, embedded in the rock is the third cabin-type which one reaches by walking down into the earth and may exit out onto their patio view of the river.

The main lodge contains offices for staff, a documentation center, a classroom, a living space, entertainment area, museum auditorium, dining area and 70 meter long terrace that leads down to the boat house, washroom facilities and river, the one way to arrive to this site.

Located along Sterling Rd near Bloor St in Toronto, Crescent Square brings together creative industry, retail, office, residential and community spaces creating a hub full of spacial differentiation and unique qualities.

The element of surprise: not knowing what is hidden and discovering it on your own. With this project, I explored how different geometry and change in grade affects how programs interact and how the public uses the space by chosing to gradually slope my program and site from east to west (instead of simple sinking an entire level), a freedom arose in plan and section which changed the spacial point of view one would have throughout the site. Similarly to the Kunsthal, one would not necessarily know where others are going, what program they are looking at or what is around the corner, in the end the project focused primarily on the experience of the individual and zooming in to see how each space would be optimally occupied.
