Throughout history, muses have inspired painters and poets, playwrights and photographers, songwriters and even fashion designers. Picasso had one. Warhol, too. So did Shakespeare. And more were merrier for the ancient Greeks who had nine mythical muses believed to bestow artistic and intellectual insight upon those who sought their gifts. So, you may be asking, what does this have to do with interior design? Short answer: Everything.

a muse is someone who awakens creativity. someone who influences another in such a way that he or she becomes 4

the driving force behind that person’s body of work. someone who helps you to see things through fresh eyes, again and again. When we set out to make this book, it wasn’t long before we realized it’s you, dear readers, who are our muses. You’re unique. Creative. Passionate. And an infinite source of inspiration. What inspires you—architecture, art, dance, drama, history, laughter, love, music, poetry and spirit—inspires us to create the beautiful things you love to live with. We call them The Next Classics because they’re always timeless. Always relevant. Always ahead of the curve. Like the great muses. Like you. With this book, we’ve taken a fresh look at this iconic American brand. As you flip through its pages, we hope it will be as inspiring to you as you are to us. Farooq Kathwari, CEO

THE STYLE SHEET

B U I L DI NG YOU R B E S T L I F E Build your foundation with elegant pieces inspired by classic forms, and focus on the finer points to bring out an aesthetic that lies somewhere between formality and informality. Here’s how to create a look that’s authentic and fresh:

36

R E S P EC T T R A DI T ION. Choose furnishings with beautiful lines that honor artistry and workmanship, and find inspiration for decorative design elements in the architectural details of historic structures. A traditional style doesn’t have to be formal. Keep it fresh with a neutral background, and remember: buy less, but buy the best. A well-made piece will hold its value for years. GET INTO A COMFORT ZONE. When it comes to creating your best life, form really does follow function. Start with livability in mind, and anchor your room with styles that feel as beautiful as they look. Dress classic styles up or down in a mix of inviting, feel-good materials like cotton, velvet, leather and wool to pull together an easy-luxe feel. DO A LITTLE EMBELLISHING. Keep your style simple and leave luxury to the details. They speak volumes about quality. Add dressmaker touches—like tufting, pin-tucking and nailhead trim—to upholstered seating or trim a wool rug in leather. Also opt for gilded flourishes and bring in artisan-crafted accent pieces wherever you can. E M B R A C E P AT T E R N S . From traditional damask and floral fabrics to geometric motifs, patterns bring visual interest and richness. Introduce a mix with varying textures and scales for a look that’s sophisticated and sumptuous. Or use one colorful pattern to add a fresh twist on a traditional piece.

THE STYLE SHEET

C U R AT I N G A S E L E C T I V E EY E Your home is a blank canvas. Develop the well-trained vision of an art director by making smart edits and careful installations that will distinguish your interior: BE A GRAPHIC DESIGNER . Take a walk on the artistic side with bold, geometric prints in black and white. Wide horizontal stripes, chevrons and fretwork patterns create an impactful yet elegant point of view.

64

D O MOR E W I T H L E S S. To ensure perfect balance in a room, try removing one piece—such as an accessory, a pillow or an accent. If the design can spare that element, try subtracting more items until your arrangement feels just right. OP T FOR C L E A N L I N E S. If your taste runs more mid-century than turn-of-the-century, consider the shape of each piece in your design. Look for modern, crisp lines in chairs, sofas and artwork that won’t detract from the room’s overall composition. W E I G H T H E P O S I T I V E S A N D N E G AT I V E S . A successful design is equal parts positive and negative space. Positive spaces, characterized by color, furniture, artwork, area rugs and bold flooring, bring a cozy feel. Negative spaces, which include empty walls, tables and areas of the floor, allow the space to “breathe.” S E L EC T C ON T E M P OR A RY W OR K S. Make your home your own art museum with a collection of works in black, white and shades of gray. Photographs, cut paper designs, sculptures and abstract art are all at home in your personal gallery.

LIVING SMALL, DREAMING BIG A well-choreographed space is alight with personality pieces and fine flourishes. This is how to get glowing reviews when square footage is at a premium: G O W I L D. With simple white walls as your backdrop, let vibrant colors and fun patterns take center stage for your upholstery and bedding. Splashes of coral and turquoise, rich quatrefoils, plush Pucci-inspired prints and playful paisleys instantly invigorate a small space.

88

P I Q U E I N T E R E S T. Shun convention and add some eclectic, boho-chic elements to your rooms such as a kantha-stitched quilt in a quirky pattern, fringed tassels, Moroccan-inspired fretwork and small-scale floral prints to convey your fun-loving spirit. A DD F I N E S S E W I T H F U NC T ION. To maximize your floor plan, look for pieces that do double duty. In other words, have a few things, and let them be fabulous! Limited dining space? Choose chairs that can also function in your living space for get-togethers. Nonexistent workspace? Look for beautiful nesting tables and ottomans—they are smart, space-saving additions to any décor. B E A S H I N I N G S TA R . Metalwork in a silver-leafed finish adds a light-as-a-feather look to your interior and creates the illusion of space. We can’t resist the airy appeal of graceful silhouettes, whether it’s in the form of a metal bed that looks like a flea-market find or a curvaceous metal table with a glass top. Congratulations! You’re officially en pointe. Now, take a bow.

THE STYLE SHEET

M A K I N G A S TAT E M E N T Creating a well-appointed home that inspires is easy when you follow these rules for adding elegance: B E B O L D W I T H P AT T E R N S . Let a distinctive pattern inspire your design scheme. Say you love blue and white Chinese porcelain (we do, too!). Select prints in a similar inky blue. They don’t have to match exactly but should blend. When picking fabrics, play with different scales and patterns to create a room that has that daring decorator’s touch. 122

TA K E I N S P I R AT I O N F R O M Y O U R T R AV E L S . Fill your rooms with pieces that remind you of your travels. Chunks of coral or sea fan prints, for example, are stunning choices for your room design and add a well-appointed, personal feel. Plus, these touches bring the allure of the West Indies to any interior. L I G H T E N U P. Make your dining room a real showstopper with a fresh take on the classics. We love the look of a formal table in dark wood. Pair it with the unexpected: informal, white-painted chairs. P L A N Y O U R S E AT I N G . Be ready for a crowd with extra seating. Try flanking a server with extra dining room chairs or strategically placing ottomans in living spaces where they can be tucked underneath a sofa table or window when not in use. G O A L L O U T. Spare no details—even outdoors—and pour on the glamour at every turn. When entertaining outdoors, set the table—and the scene—with porcelain, crystal, china and monogrammed napkins. Pulling out all the stops creates an enduring style statement.

THE STYLE SHEET

E M B R AC I NG LU X U RY To live the luxe life, reinterpret the past by making design choices from a historical point of view. Here’s how to put a cool spin on the classics for a lavish look that’s just right for today. TA K E A H I S T O R Y L E S S O N . Architectural style has influenced furniture through the centuries. Let your home reflect the tradition of fine craftsmanship with quality, handmade furniture and period moldings. Recall an earlier time with raised panels, turnings, reeding motifs, poster beds and Queen Anne legs that speak to the ages. 157

156

W E L C OM E G A R DE N I N F LU E N C E S. Elaborate, formal garden designs have been cherished for centuries. Gardeninspired décor imparts a relaxed elegance. Include these influences indoors with charming botanical prints, garden-style lanterns and urn-inspired lamps and accents. S T U DY T H E C L A S S I C S . Details, details, details. Take cues from the history books, paying close attention to time-honored, furniture-making traditions. All through the house, nailhead trim, tufting and classic lines can be used as nods to the past. When selecting window treatments, choose designs with the refined dressmaker details that appeal most to you. C HO O S E A N E U T R A L PA L E T T E . There are a thousand shades of white, and chances are, you have at least six favorites. Use tones throughout a room to highlight fine architectural details and Old World craftsmanship and give classic pieces an updated, reinterpreted look. A mix of different whites, off-whites and ecrus will bring warmth to your home.

THE STYLE SHEET

LIVING IN FULL COLOR There are no bad colors, only less-than-complementary color combinations. Avoid the pitfalls by following these simple guidelines: TA K E Y O U R T E M P E R AT U R E . Are you crazy for coral? Giddy for gold? If we’re getting warm, that’s your color undertone preference, too. Favor sea blues or grass greens? Then you’re drawn to colors with cool undertones. Pair colors with complementary undertones to create a harmonious palette. 188

MAKE ROOM FOR THREE. Three isn’t a crowd when it comes to color. In fact, it creates great visual balance. Once you’ve selected the perfect trio, follow this simple 60-30-10 rule: 60% dominant color, 30% secondary color and 10% accent color. S P R E A D S O M E H A P PY. Shots of bright white are like serotonin boosters for a room. Use the hue liberally in spaces with dramatic color schemes to keep the mood light and give the eye a place to rest. TA K E I T T O T H E F I N I S H . A great furniture piece in an unexpected finish can have as much impact as a bold wall paint or upholstery fabric. For a fresh approach, mix colorful furniture with subdued materials, such as natural woods, glass or metal.

THE STYLE SHEET

C OM P O S I N G A R E L A X E D R HY T H M Every room has its own unique vibe—an energy and tempo unlike any other. Hit all the right notes with these expert to-dos: C H O O S E N AT U R A L F I B E R S . The relaxed look of linen and leather imparts an unfettered feel and adds a texture to your casual interior. Try using it in unexpected places like on the bed and windows. Likewise, warm, artisan leather on dining chairs and sofas offers fuss-free wearability for a farm-to-table, family-first sensibility. 252

TA K E I T I N S I D E . Surrounding yourself with neutral-colored, earthy touches like textured timber, stone and seagrass creates a neutral, connected-to-the earth feel. Try adding in a painted piece of furniture for a burst of color, but keep hues muted and tonal so they blend with your nature-inspired scheme. We love our Ink and Robin’s Egg Blue finishes. G O TO N EW H E IG H T S. Low-slung may be fine for fashion, but when it comes to windows, hang window treatments high. Generally, panels look best when they’re hung at least three to six inches above the window frame. At that height, rooms look larger, ceilings soar and rods won’t interrupt the view. F AV O R F A M I LY S T Y L E . Go for casual sectionals and dining tables that offer plenty of seats for family and friends. If you love to live with a weathered look, choose furniture with a timeworn finish. Your family will appreciate that daily living will only add to the beauty of your home. Sweet harmony at last.

This book is not a catalog. It’s a journey of inspiration.

So I would like to tell you a story about my life that is more than a catalog of the facts. I have been told that the facts already make a good story themselves, though it’s hard for me to say. My story, like that of many immigrants, involves a lot of hard work and a few fortunate encounters. That’s for another time. The facts about me are easy to find. For my inspiration, we would have to go to the mountains.

314

Kashmir, where I was born, is a land of mountains; the Himalayas themselves create the basin of the Kashmir valley. Hiking and climbing have been a constant for nearly my whole life. I’ve scaled Mount Washington in New Hampshire and Pikes Peak in Colorado; climbed in the Canadian Rockies, Idaho and Wyoming. I’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. But my favorite mountains are in Kashmir because they were the ones I knew first and because the vistas are so magnificent. My muse, my inspiration, strikes there. Through nature, you gain tremendous perspective. In the mountains, it’s easy to see how immense beauty is—and how small we are—in the world. On a mountain, one must practice patience. One learns how to pace oneself. Try to climb too quickly, and you’ll end up with fluid in your lungs. If you push too hard, you have to descend and stabilize, then move forward. It’s no failure to step backward when your plan is to continue. So in their way, the mountains have inspired the way every change has unfolded at Ethan Allen in the last 30 years—and there have been a lot of them.

A REVELATION IN THE MOUNTAINS Ethan Allen’s CEO Farooq Kathwari learns invaluable business lessons while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

I wrote in my journal, on my way to begin a new life in New York at age 21, that it was time to “climb a new mountain.” That my journey took me from the peaks of Kashmir to North Carolina’s Appalachians and the Green Mountains of Vermont—it’s a connection with great meaning to me. Time and time again, mountains have humbled me and inspired me to grow and achieve. I hope your inspirations move you to great heights as well.

From the beginning, we didn’t just make furniture. We made history.

America’s classic design brand is born when Nat Ancell, a young law clerk with an entrepreneurial itch, goes into business with his brother-in-law, Ted Baumritter. The new T. Baumritter Company, established in 1932, finds an enthusiastic audience for its small furnishings and decorative items and grows quickly.

316

To speed efficiency, Nat and Ted buy a sawmill in Vermont, and start making their own furniture. They produce a 28-piece line designed in the Early American style, and name it after an icon of the American Revolution and a favorite son of Vermont, Ethan Allen. Not only beautiful but beautifully crafted, the Ethan Allen line debuts at the Chicago Housewares show and soon runs into competition from products of lesser quality and lower price. With their life savings on the line, Nat and Ted define the philosophy that still guides the Ethan Allen brand today: “We decided we were in the business of selling thoughts, not P ORTRAIT OF A MODERN-DAY PIONEER Nat Ancell (shown), along with his brother-in-law, Ted Baumritter, revolutionized how we shop for furniture.

things,” Nat would later say. The pair dedicate themselves to creating and selling environments, not just individual products. The marketing shift changes everything. Large retailers start ordering entire room sets from the young company, and the rest is history.

the company that would become ethan allen earns an early reputation for innovation, upending many of the long-held traditions of the furniture business. in the 1940s, it creates “open stock” styles so clients can buy pieces over their lifetimes without fear that the line will be discontinued.

in post-war america, styles are evolving, and the company places itself at the forefront of home fashion with a new, mid-century modern collection that captures the sleek, forward-looking attitude of the times.

1940 1950 and as an american brand, the company also volunteers in the war effort, earning three army-navy “e” awards for excellence in the manufacture of various military materials.

to accommodate its rapid growth, the company expands to three sawmills and eleven manufacturing plants. a beautiful solid maple chest becomes the one-millionth piece of ethan allen furniture and is given as a gift to president eisenhower. (ike liked it.)

1960 in 1962, the company once again turns tradition on its head with a revolutionary new concept: the ethan allen gallery. this is a completely new shopping experience, where furniture is displayed not in rows but in professionally designed room settings, allowing shoppers to visualize their dreams. highly trained interior designers stand by to provide complimentary design advice.

319

three milestone moments come to pass in this pivotal decade. the name of the brand is officially changed from the t. baumritter company to ethan allen. the company opens its first international location in yokohama, japan.

1970

and a young entrepreneur named farooq kathwari forms a joint venture with ethan allen, and together they expand the company’s offerings to include unique and artisanal products from around the world.

in 1985, kathwari becomes president of ethan allen, and in 1988, chairman and ceo. during this decade, he creates the foundation for the modern global brand ethan allen is today. his first step is to unify dealers across the country under one national network of design centers, presenting one vision and speaking with one voice.

1980

with the company’s strategic priorities now firmly in place, ethan allen returns to public trading on the new york stock exchange. those priorities include phasing out the brand’s early american and colonial styles in favor of design diversity, reflecting kathwari’s philosophy that america represents a world of international influences.

1990

next he reengineers the behind-the scenes logistics, which enables ethan allen to now deliver products quickly, safely and at one price nationwide.

ethan allen also gives its design centers a makeover, replacing the cupola, facades and other trimmings of colonial style with sleek and stately exteriors.

and in 1989, to further allow ethan allen to define its own destiny, kathwari leads a management buyout and takes the company private.

kathwari establishes flagship design centers in strong american markets, and leads the international expansion of the brand, particularly in china.

321

the brand continues to open new design centers in the u.s., and through a partnership with markor home furnishings, in locations throughout china. mid-decade, ethan allen opens its first flagship in manhattan, on the upper east side, as well as a fully shoppable online flagship, ethanallen.com. it also upgrades technology and equipment throughout its manufacturing facilities.

2000

in the wake of the great recession, many american furniture manufacturers shift to offshore production, but again, ethan allen goes in a different direction, firmly committing to the skills of its american workers and the quality of its american workshops. even today, most of the company’s products are made by hand, one piece at a time, in its own workshops across north america.

with 200 design centers in the u.s. and another 100 abroad, ethan allen is not just an american company, but an internationally recognized beacon of uncompromised quality and classic style. with a network of nearly 2,000 professional designers, ethan allen is truly the world’s leading interior design firm.

323

Ethan Allen now with design diversity that ranges from casual to elegant, and with everything from furniture to accents for every room in the house, ethan allen gives its shoppers a virtually infinite palette from which to paint their dreams.

from the very beginning, ethan allen has been a different kind of brand. committed to making its own products, operating its own stores and defining its own destiny with timeless style, uncompromised quality and superior service. these are the ingredients of a brand like no other in the world. then. now. always. ethan allen. america’s classic design brand.
