Didactic Unit: A healthy life Healthy lifestyle is a didactic unit designed for students of 4 of ESO. The main objective is to show the students what a healthy lifestyle is and the different aspects of it such as nutrition and sports. In this case, the content is part of the Physical Education curriculum and it is designed to take place in the English class. However, it is thought to work on it together with the Physical Education department. th

The main objectives of this unit are: ● To explain how important having a healthy life is. ● To teach what a balanced diet must include. ● To show the benefits of taking regular exercise. ● To identify what we should change in order to improve our lifestyle and what we should avoid in our daily life.

The Didactic Unit is divided into four sessions: ● Session 1: In the first session, the topic of a healthy lifestyle is introduced. Students start working on nutrition with a pre-activity that consists on comparing two dishes.

Later on, there is a reading activity on nutrition and a written exercise (creating a recipe) in groups. Finally, the written exercise is presented orally in front of the class.

● Session 2: In the second session, students work the topic of sport and how important it is for our health. They will do a pre-activity about vocabulary before watching a video.

After that, there is an activity about comprehension and a written exercise in pairs.

Oral comprehension and written expression are worked in this session. ● Session 3: Once students have learnt about a healthy life, they have to look for further information on the Internet and be able to give a piece of advice to some people who want to improve their lifestyle. Moreover, they have to work in group to create a small project about the topic. Written expression is worked mainly in this session. ● Session 4: Students have to present their small project orally in front of the class. Oral expression is worked in this session.

SESSION 1 1. Look at the pictures and compare them, write down at least three reasons why one dish is healthier than the other one.

Once you have done that, you can share your information with your partner and write in pairs a list of five ingredients that a healthy dish/diet should include.

2. Read the text below. If you have any doubts, we will discuss them with the class.

STEPS TO HEALTHY EATING

1. Eat a nutritious diet based on a variety of foods originating mainly from plants, rather than animals.

2. Eat bread, whole grains, pasta, rice or potatoes several times per day.

3. Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits (such as broccoli, cucumber, eggplant, onions, salad greens and tomatoes), preferably fresh and local, several times per day (at least 400g per day).

4. Control fat intake (not more than 30% of daily energy) and replace most saturated fats with unsaturated fats.

5. Replace fatty meat and meat products with beans, legumes, lentils, fish, poultry or lean meat.

6. Use milk and dairy products (kefir, sour milk, yoghurt and cheese) that are low in both fat and salt.

7. Select foods that are low in sugar, and limit the frequency of sugary drinks and sweets.

8. Choose a low-salt diet. Total salt intake should not be more than one teaspoon (5g) per day, including the salt in bread and processed, cured and preserved foods.

9. WHO does not set particular limits for alcohol consumption because the evidence shows that the ideal solution for health is not to drink at all, therefore less is better.

10. Prepare food in a safe and hygienic way. Steam, bake, boil or microwave to help reduce the amount of added fat.

3. In groups of 3-4 people, you have to write down a recipe using at least five ingredients of the text. In order to do that, you can re-read the text in group and look for the ingredients you are going to use.

Apart from that, you also need to draw what your final dish would look like in the empty plate.

Then, you will have to present your dish in front of the class and the whole group will vote for their favourite dish.

2. Imagine you collaborate with an organization that promotes the healthy life and habits. In small groups, design a leaflet including why having a healthy life is important and some tips to achieve it.

Then, you will have to present your design in front of the class.
