Title: Urban development as a reflection of dynamics of mobility: The case of Bukavu (DRCongo)
In this dissertation, I researched the historic social, political and economic drivers of urban development of the city of Bukavu, capital of South Kivu on the border between DRCongo and Rwanda. The objective of this dissertation was to explore how contemporary socio-spatial risks and vulnerabilities are a product of historic developmental processes in a colonial and post-colonial context.
The first part of the dissertation focusses on the urban scale and explores in detail the colonial legacy in the city's socio-spatial make-up. The second part delves deeper into how regional and cross-border economic and socio-political dynamics contribute to the complex development of the region and the city.
With this dissertation I explored storytelling through visual representations and written word based on critical examination of previous multidisciplinary research and historical documents.
