Information Site: Tondo, Manila Philippines Year: 2021 Trimester 1 Course: ARCI 411 Architecture Design Research Supervisor: Daniele Abrieu Lima Final Mark: A+ Technical Skills: Rhino 7, Rhino + Vray, Revit, Photoshop, Procreate About the Project The birth of Balai 105 social housing for slum dwellers in Tondo Manila has emerged from a simple brief of designing a post-pandemic “emergency architecture” with a freedom to select a particular circumstance to address with architecture, is driven by a passion and empathy to address the “most vulnerable” in times of Pandemic.

The design decisions are driven by intensive research about Covid-19, emergency architecture, the inhabitants and their current living conditions. This led to creating a well-balanced architectural project where functionality, planning, structure, and build-ability were successfully accomplished while bringing a sense of identity to the inhabitants and beauty to a social architecture.

In future design development opportunity, the school will further be explored in details along with a further research.

The school will be placed on site within its community. It is important to create a facility that aims to create a greater impact for the benefit of the urban regeneration and the aesthetic added value to its urban fabric. It will also help in creating new identity of the place with the same idea of using shipping container and bamboo materials.

The school will address the issue of lack of education and employment within these communities by creating facilities where children can learn and be left after-school in a safe environment while parents have enough time to earn for their families. School will also need new trained staff to facilitate the learning of the students and maintenance of the school.

Brown Final Mark: A Technical Skills: Rhino 7, Rhino + Vray, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator About the Project The design intention for the new Victoria University of Wellington Faculty of Architecture and Design, Te Aro Campus is to create a landmark architecture by presenting the building itself with a strong architectural gesture of curvature and exposed structures. This intention is embedded with a purpose to generate a new pedagogical strategy to enrich the minds of the students through physical architectural gestures and spatial planning that promote cross-disciplinary dialogue between architecture and design disciplines Thus, this design emphasizes architectural elements such as an interplay between exposed and unexposed structural members and facade design technology.

The major design decision for the initial design concept through mirroring the curved volumes.

Taken from the precedential study, the volume for studio is separated vertically but in a terracing manner.

Radial Grid

Glass Ceiling Threshold

To further connect the architeture to the environment presented through the Cobblestone Park, radial grid is created where each large trusses will lie within the atrium.

The threshold in between two mirroring volumes is an important statement as it creates a beautiful transition between volumes.

03| Construction Drawings Information Site: Te Aro, Wellington Year: 2021 Trimester 2 Course: ARCI 421 Integrated Technologies Final Mark: A+ Supervisor: Mark Warren Technical Skills: Revit + Rhino About the Project The design intention for the new Victoria University of Wellington Faculty of Architecture and Design, Te Aro Campus is to create a landmark architecture by presenting the building itself with a strong architectural gesture of curvature and exposed structures. The implementation of the steel column truss system that erects on its radial grid supplements the design intention as a significant element that will establish the school’s aesthetic landmark identity and structural integrity.

The overall complexities of the organic geometry of the building is addressed by integrating a variety of structural elements that works together to provide adaptable interior spaces and allow the organic shape of the building.

04| Cultural Centre Of Creative Arts and Practices Information Site: Shelly Bay, Wellington Year: 2020 Trimester 2 ARCI 312 Architecture Design Capstone Supervisor: Daniele Abrieu Lima + Carrie Matson Final Mark: A+ Technical Skills: Rhino 6 with Grasshopper plugin, Rhino Vray, Photoshop About the Project The project brief brings together multi-disciplinary program of VUW’s Creative Practice, Architecture, Creative writing, Dance, Design, Film and Theatre as a notion to promote interdisciplinary education and to forge new areas of study for the future, which demands a greater diversity of spaces in terms of their relationship, sizes and technical requirements. The primary focus in this project is to explore the relationships between architectural concepts, architectural planning , materiality and structural systems responding to site complexities and necessities.

The proposed design for Cultural Centre for Creative Arts in Shelly Bay is inspired from a Maori saying:“He kura tangata e kore e roko-hanga, he kura whenua ka rokohanga” which refers to “the treasured possession of men are intangible, the treasures of land are tangible”, relating to how the ancient Maori people guards the nature as a taonga (treasure). The concept of this design aims to reconnect people back to the notion of nature as their own treasure.

The project communicates the resolution of construction problems in digital construction drawings showing a great understanding on NZ medium scale construction to specific situations by developing a tectonic construction strategy of a complex building. Each materials throughout the core was carefully designed, chosen and applied to our own selection, appropriate to its architectural elements and planning to display evidence of research, knowledge and skills
