COMMUNITY CEMETERIES B U I L D I N G H E A LT H Y R E L AT I O N S H I P S

A healthy relationship with death can elicit cross platform empathy, higher level thinking and or civic responsibility through the vehicle of mortality by reincorporating the ecology of death and dying into the everyday urban condition.

The idea of the Community Cemetery, a small localized burial ground would reintroduce death back into the everyday condition of life. These spaces are multipurpose, not solely for meditation and quiet, but to reinvigorate the sentiment that death is a part of life. These smaller spaces require natural burials which allow for more shallow burial depths and a better relationship with the ecological aspect of death. That our bodies must reintegrate and so grieving loved ones do not just associate a specific plot with an individual but a place.

COMMUNITY CEMETERIES O P E R AT I O N S

CREAMATED BURIAL

Volunteers make deep connections with both the living and the dead.

They are keepers of the grounds and spokespersons for the spaces they create. Because community cemeteries are deployed locally there is a stronger empathetic response to care for these places and their greater community..

CREAMATED BURIAL

While cremation contains too much salt to spread in panted areas (similar composition to sea water), the pure calcium through alkaline hydrolisis can be interred in soil and 6 scattered in a garden.

UPRIGHT BURIAL

Another alternative to burial is upright burial. It has recently been used in Australia at the Kurweeton Road Cemetery.

It manages to save up to 90% of space per plot which could provide an answer to currently operating urban cemeteries that are running out of space as well as Community cemeteries.

BURY YOUR DEAD

While most people would prefer to leave the actual burial up to professionals, the shallower depth of natural burials would allow family and friends who so choose to hand dig a grave site for their loved one.

AID THE GREIVING

With community being one of the core functions of the garden, what is often a lonely period for those who have lost may gain the support of contact with and openness of passers by and others in the garden.

Natural Burials are buried at a depth of 3.5 feet.

Since oxygen levels are higher at this depth there is a vastly higher degree of microbiota activity allowing Vegetation to takeup nutrients from decomposition while simultaneously enriching the soil through these complex relationships

BURIAL SITE TURNOVER

Natural Burials incite a shorter time frame for decomposition so plot sites may be turned over to new individuals in need once a loved one has completely reintegrated into the earth which can take 8-12 years and is dependent on soil health.

RESEARCH & GIS The data for this map was created by cross referencings “The Graveyard Shift: A Family Historian’s Guide to New York City Cemeteries” by Carolee Inskeep, NYGenWeb, and many other public records.

Once located each area was visited in Google streetview or in person. Indications of remnants tomb stones were geotagged. Point data was created in GIS to map historic cemeteries specifically or general location due to lost records and accounts.

Phyto Remeditaion, LOWERING GRADE & LACE CUTBACKS Howland Hook is a coastal area in the northwestern corner of Staten Island, New York City. It is located on Newark Bay near the entrance of the Kill van Kull in the east and Arthur Kill in the west. It is bordered

by Arlington to the east, Old Place to the south, Newark Bay to the north, and the Arthur Kill to the west.

The industrial age of Staten Island created long lasting environmental detriment to an integral wetland area. Milliken Bros steel company later the Downey Shipbuilding Co., Procter & Gamble Ivory Soap facility (1907-1991), and dumping of dredged earth are responsible for the widespread destruction of the areas’ natural resources and permanent damage to the physical geology and material land.

The water also continues to maintain unsafe elvels of PCBs, lead and many other industrial chemicals.

It is likely the area always had some type of upland topography considering it’s historic propensity for being called a ‘point’. However it is unclear because mapping records fluctuate in shape and almost all are records after industrializaytion. However the Howland Hook area is encapsulated by wetland systems, integrating into this system by lowering the shoreline grade to encourage flooding, eradication of phragmities and replacing with phyto remidators and adding lace like cutbacks to create drastically more edge condition will contribute more socioecologically.

LIVING PHRAG FENCE “Living fences� planted at key invasion points are effective in blocking the spread of Phrag.

While the lowered grade would increase regular brackish inundation of Newark bay which phragmites cannot survive in not on as well as higher soil sulfide content from the estuary.

Phragmites out competes native vegetation and lowers the local plant biodiversity. It forms dense thickets of vegetation that is unsuitable habitat for native fauna and displaces native plants species. Phragmites has a high above ground biomass that blocks light to other plants allowing areas to turn into a phrag monoculture very quickly. Decomposing Phragmites increases the rate of marsh accretion more rapidly than would occur with native marsh vegetation. Disturbed land is highly susceptible.

ROCKY UPLAND

UPLAND RUNOFF DIRECTED TOWARD WETLAND

TOPOGRAPHY The Howland Hook area is a damaged feral site reverting itself back into a some semblance of an upland/wetland relationship. Topographical disturbance prevents any immediate notion of a “naturalistic� reversion as disturbed land is suseptable to opportunistic species with minimal biodiversity.

The area currently does not function as well as it could in terms. Though the sire may not have been historically a wetland area, it is part of a greater system of wetlands and would do well to integrate itself but having its topography lowered and inundated more often via inlets.

The site area has been repeatedly transformed over the past two centuries, it has morphed into an island and back into main land. The earth has been heavily disturbed and filled multiple times over.

Remnants of Port Ivory largely live to the east with a disintegrating railway jutting into the water, concrete supports, iron pipes, coal and brick littered beaches, two undetermined concrete pool structures.

King Street, from Van Brunt to Ferris Street, ends with a large parking lot that abuts Red Hook Terminal and Atlantic Basin.

This spread of mostly unused asphalt overlooks the Buttermilk Channel with views of Governers Island, Ellis Island and the lower tip of Manhattan. King Street is an oil-smeared, garbage strewn stretch. Pedestrians and cyclists, line the fencing for a glimpse of beautiful views but are prevented access to the waters edge.

CONTESTED TERRITORIES FLOW AND EDGE DETERRENTS

Development plans may limit water front views, habitat, displace afforadable business space, further polorize who may use the space and increase infustructurally unsupported visitor traffic.

Edge condition has limited habitat support. Razor wire and temporary storage.

Parking lot revokes visual acces to edge, creates large expanse of storm water runoff and does not support a habitable edge.

Three public parks are disconnected and provide limited habitat for wildlife.

Poor pavement condition all across Red Hook Neighborhood

Cobbles not well preserved, partially paved, or sunken depressions.

Industrial street condition can seem restrictive to visitors, though this is not the case.

It is hard to fathom Colombia’s duality as a beautiful and culturally rich country juxtaposed with it’s historical ultraviolence that it’s people have endured for the last century. “Colombians struggle to describe their nation in ways that will be true to a kaleidoscopic reality. Multiplegenerations have despaired of fratricidal cycles of violence. Criminal impunity and corruption are endemic. Deep divisions persist. Yet the country is modern, with a well-functioning financial sector, a good urban infrastructure,and a sophisticated, if unequal, health system.”
