ith the order and guidance of the Tayabas City Mayor, Mayor Ernida A. Reynoso, the joint inspection and monitoring by the Interim Committee on the Operation of Bypass Vendors and the Tourism Operations Section was commenced last April 10. The compliance validation was overlooked one by one by the Interim Committee and the Representatives to see if the North and South side vendors did comply with the agreement set upon them. The following were also examined: line barrier for taking of orders and claiming of foods, trash bins for recyclable and non-recyclable wastes, wearing of the health card, the removal of tables and chairs, a 2-meter distancing between stalls, the proper wearing of face masks and face shield, the full implementation of no-parking regulation along the highway, and age restrictions, such as people who are below 15 years old and above 65 years old. It is also the lowest rank with a score of 45.64 under Duterte’s Administration. The index evaluates the press freedom situation yearly based on the degree of freedom of speech available to journalists, assessments of pluralism, media equality, legal continuity, and journalist security. It is cited that the Philippines is one of the countries where press freedom is categorized as bad and highlighted in red on the map index. As stated by the RSF, the alleged red-tagging of journalists and the Duterte administration’s alleged “judicial intimidation operation” against Rappler’s CEO Maria Ressa and the House of Representatives’ denial of a franchise for ABS-CBN broadcasting giant are some for the

On top of this, Roque stated, “We see nothing wrong with it, but of course we also dispute the ranking because Reporters Without Borders considered as affronts to press freedom this Rappler issue which we know was a decision of the SEC which is not appointed by President Duterte and are appointees of President Aquino and this ABS-CBN issue that needs a franchise to operate.” “We still refute that these two problems should have resulted in our rating being lowered,” he added. The Philippines ranked 136th in 2020, 134th in 2019, 133rd in 2018, and 127th in 2017.

The Arrogance and Consequences Kim Bryan Banaag Jon Louis Romasanta

The whole world has been trying to overcome the threat of the virus COVID-19 for almost a year and a half. Moreover, after the said virus affected its origin country, China, the Philippines was one of the first neighboring countries that have been affected by the virus. With the rapid increase of affected cases from the last few months, President Rodrigo Duterte persisted that there is nothing to blame on the government effort to fight the COVID-19. He also added that “Hindi tayo nagkulang, right after the WHO (World Health Organization) advisory, the following day after, basta within 48 hours, we already had the task force.” Indeed, the government did everything they could to prevent the virus from spreading further, but they have a late start. Because of the arrogance, they have shown that a long chain of consequences is created in the beginning. They only impose a travel ban for the Chinese nationals from Wuhan but not on the Filipino citizen and their companion in entering the Philippines. Furthermore, some residents in Manila have been affected by the first case of COVID-19 in the Philippines. At first, the Filipino citizens follow all of the rules and regulations implemented by the government. As time goes by, the financial status of every Filipino has been dropping and not increasing even a bit. In the survey conducted by the World Bank during the whole pandemic, if to compare it

to the Family and Income Expenditure Survey (FIES) 2018, the income of every household has dropped. As a result, the poor have become poorer. Not just the citizens but also the economic status of the country has dropped in large amounts, and a large amount of debt, domestic and external, has been put in the tab of the Philippine Government. Nevertheless, as of August 2020, they only allotted P376.7 Billion for the

to receive the ayuda of the government. Some politicians monopolized the funds given by the government, and as a result, many Filipino families suffer from hunger. Moreover, from the Social Weather Stations (SWS) assessment, 16.7% or 3.9 million families in the country went hungry because of the three months lockdown, March to May. the chain of consequences will not occur initially, the economic drop of the Philippines, the financial status of every Filipino household that leads them to be poor. Today, they can not also blame the citizens for sometimes not following the rules and regulations of the government during this whole pandemic situation because, unlike the rich Filipino, some need to face the threat of the virus to have food on their plate.

I am Inevitable but we are the Avengers Patrick Loriz Pineda

Truthfully,COVID-19 virus is unavoidable, it does not pick people who will experience the virus, all of us can be affected, and we should accept that no one is safe in this pandemic. Under general community quarantine status, Quezon Province logged a total of 9,565 COVID-19 cases and 8,060 recoveries as of April 19 since the pandemic broke out in March last year. Last January 04, The Integrated Provincial Health Office released four COVID-19 patients – one each in the town of Candelaria and Tayabas City and two in the municipality of Lopez. Later on, after a week, Sunday, another patient died in Unisan town. Imagine that in the week of New Year, five

people at once died due to the coronavirus. No matter how we keep every one of us safe the virus will come to us. It is unavoidable, but some precautions may keep us away from the virus. Stay at home; this is the best way of avoiding the virus. Stay at home and limit other people from the outside to enter the house because we never know If a family member goes outside, make sure that before they enter the house, sanitize them and go straight to the restroom to clean. Follow the rules and resist yourself to go outside; although it is tiring to stay at home for a long time, do it for safety. Who else will work together but us? Help yourself, help every one of us. We can defeat the virus; the pandemic will soon come to an end.

The Unwanted Cycle

Squandered Response

Jon Louis Romasanta

The government should ensure the country’s sake, not the one who tolerates incompetency that drags the country deeper into the abyss.

It is disappointing to hear that another and stricter lockdowns returned again in the Philippines. As 2021 came, many people hoped that the pandemic would be resolved little by little, hoping that all will be back to normal as time goes by. March 2020 when President Duterte declared a state of public health emergency in the Philippines, which suspended classes from different private and public schools. After a considerable amount of time, lockdowns were lifted as people go back from going out to public places while following health protocols that they call “the new normal.” Things were looking a little better since then until new variants of the virus were announced, resulting to another round of lockdowns. As many places in the Philippines were under Enhanced Community Community Quarantine, Quezon Province was placed under General Community Quarantine. While the adults are

allowed to go out as they go to work and buy essential things, students remain at their homes, continuing their online classes. Unfortunately, the hope of having face-toface classes again will not be implemented anytime soon. With another round of the pandemic, children will continue to encounter their problem even if they have the privilege or not. such as having troubles in education or having no education at all. Poverty remains as the unemployment rate rises this pandemic. Many children are forced to stop another year because of a lack of budget and equipment. Countless students are also faced with depression, anxiety, and having no energy to study at home. Being at home may be a comfort, but they may impact their emotional development. With the government having no concrete plans on ending the pandemic as soon as possible, the crisis in education will also continue to emerge.

A

s the country is still facing the drought that pandemic has brought, the controversial Manila Bay beautification project that is said to become an aid for the mental health of people caught the attention of citizens, as tons of new ‘white sand’ made from dolomite has been poured again at the top of the bay. Instead of gaining praise, the latter received much criticism, especially from those who see the project as unnecessary to prioritize amidst the pandemic. Knowing that the people’s lives are at stake, improving the country’s healthcare is still not the priority. Being one of the countries that confine a load of COVID-19 cases, deciding to continue the rehabilitation of the washedup shore of Manila Bay is not the resort that the people are greatly needed. It is genuinely

dismay, as this is a straightup slap to people’s faces that diminishing the pandemic can be set aside, while the beautification takes precedence over everything else. “What is more important now is to address the growing anxiety over the failed COVID-19 pandemic response of the government. Why don’t the government use the fund for the dolomite project, instead, to buy and develop more testing kits in order to implement free mass testing?” said Advocates of Science and Technology for the People (Agham). It also added that the government is throwing money into the sea as these funds used on Manila Bay rehabilitation-could have been used for the betterment of health establishments, vaccine procurement, and financial aid to the pandemic. This is to hit the government that they should be accountable

THEN AND NOW

“Be safe, be smart, be kind.” – Ghebreyesus, 2020 When the viral sickness evolved into a pandemic, people worldwide had their lives turned upside-down. With the looming threat, nation leaders were made to force to subject their country into a full-scale national lockdown. The streets barren, noise absent, as if every place were a shell of its former existence. A ghost town, if you may. Everyone fearing for their lives and praying for their safety. As the government was confident in their solution, relief eases in the hearts of many. However, there are many obstructions over the way to normal. People were advised to stay at home, resulting in others being forced out of jobs due to the aforementioned situation. Many businesses are struggling as well as keeping themselves afloat. Medical professionals became busy keeping others alive as well as themselves. Employees from all backgrounds do not receive enough payment; others do not receive any at all. Those are some of the events that played out during the first announcement of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). The unemployment rate decreases since the start of COVID-19 that results to the lowest labor force participation rate in the Philippine labor market. Although many people were laid off from their previous occupations, residents were given goods from the government to alleviate the condition. During the first ECQ, there have been weekly distribution of help to the families in the area. Essentials such as rice, canned goods, and instant noodles comprise the goods distributed to them.

to prioritize their response to diminishing the country’s pandemic. Rehabilitation of health facilities, implementing free mass testing, and acquiring sufficient vaccine accessible by the mass are the things that need to be considered by the government to lessen the tremendous impact that pandemic has brought to the country and its people. Health care should be the priority here. Response for eliminating the pandemic should take precedence. A concrete plan for ensuring the people’s safety should matter; inessential rehabilitation should be set aside as the people are getting sick of going back to square one. The government should ensure the country’s sake, not the one who tolerates incompetency that drags the country deeper into the abyss.

INFORMATIVE

However, as soon as the second wave of ECQ hits the province, there has been a lack of action from the officials, considering that there had been changes made from the recent census. Moreover, reports state that there is currently decreasing amount of support given to class C to class E citizens to believe that they have resources that will allow them to access what they need. This speculation raised doubts among the public. The Philippine Government reached out to 14,255 families in July 2020 to give out cash assistance (1,000.00 PHP) in the following places. According to the survey, only 32-40% of the household all around the country can afford their food expenses. On the bright side, there has been a notable increase in public transports operating within the province than the previous declaration of ECQ. Security and monitoring forces patrolling the borders became stricter with compliance to the new protocols, telling other motorists to turn back if the purpose of their travel is not essential. In turn, it also cultivated one’s self-discipline in following the rules for the “new normal.” It also promoted family bonding, with them being able to interact with each other. Not all things that brought disaster will also end up in disaster. There might be cases of blessings in disguise. Most of us learned to appreciate silence in the middle of the chaos. This time, we learned to be creative in connecting with others in keeping ourselves alive. As the technology progresses, so does innovation and determination to push through boundaries for a better future to live in.

ASPIRING TO INSPIRING LEADER:

Promise of Commitment

Jhon Gabriel Turgo

“I can’t describe myself as a leader but I can only say that I am once a good follower and until now even if I am one of the leaders, I am and always be a follower.”

Last April 10, Jewell Wayne Ilao Anglo was given a Leadership Award and People’s Choice Award for the Search for the Most Outstanding Female Student for S.Y. 2020-2021 in Senior High School Category in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. Her journey as a leader started back then in her elementary days in L.C. Young Learner’s Home Co. Inc. She was a grade 5 student running for a position in Student Council Organization or SCO. During her first candidacy, she lost with just one vote, but her desire to become a leader did not stop right there. Her teachers who became her mentors inspired her to do better, and they provided her the strength to develop her leadership skills. As they believe in her capabilities, Jewell also started to believe in herself. As she continues to develop her leadership skills, indeed, her friends show a genuine camaraderie as they walk throughout the journey together. Back then, in her tenth grade in Junior High School, her best friends – Chen and Marga are her companions in the leadership field. The activities and challenges during these days helped her enhance not just her leadership skills but also her socializing and understanding capabilities. Amidst the pandemic, Jewell still pursues what her heart desires. She became the Editor-in-Chief of the school publication, The Junior Luzonian, and the President of the Student Council of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) track. She knew that nothing would be easy to handle, but she still chose to accept it and continue working hard on it. Her experiences, including her success and failures, mold her personality as a great leader. Her failure became a Photo from Jewell Wayne Anglo part of her success, which led her to be brave enough always to try every opportunity that may come. The pitfalls of her journey as a follower are a manifestation of her resiliency as a leader and as a Filipino. She believed in herself and became calm as she trusts the timing, accepted the failures and rejections, stayed focused on her ultimate goal, and disregarded the negativity. “The promise of commitment and passion to yourself is also a thing. In every situation, you must protect your peace at all cost. Stop expecting, start accepting,” Jewell stated.

Goals: Student -Entrepreneurs of EU

Claire Alano Entrepreneurship benefits students from all socioeconomic backgrounds because it implies challenges, vigorous efforts, enhancements, and satisfaction. Students could make promising entrepreneurs as they could make impossible things possible for their age using driven passion and abilities to create new things. Failure might be one of the results, but some are using it as a ladder to climb up and reach the goal.

Keileb Sochaco, a brainy entrepreneur from STEM12B6, created a coffee business called “Haimish Coffee,” which was newly established this April 2021. The young man made it possible because of his passion and wisdom. According to him, “There’s always time for something if you want something to happen.” He mentioned that his funds came from his family, which is why he is striving hard to pay back not only his debt, but also for their kindness and support. Aira Nicole Valdepeña, HUMMS12B1, established her unique business called “By aan.” She makes wearable clay art hat is 100% handmade with love, patience, and care. It all started as a hobby that turned into business last November 2020. The extraordinary entrepreneur mentioned that she finds joy when making art and dressing up. She used her will and talent to help her family financially due to his dad’s temporary lack of presence. She was already doing portrait commissions before, so she could save some cash to buy and explore clay which is good for her business. At first, she lost some funds while testing the clays but thanks to her sister, who guided her until she found the right one, she was able to gain it again.

Zyrene De Guzman, AD12B1, first established her proud business called “Thriftshoppeeeee,” hoppeeeee,” featuring thrifted clothes open for bargain, last January 2019. She took her hobby to a business, which was then made possible by using half of her very own allowance that pushed her business to instantly grow through her consistency, patience, and hardworking mindset. What an excellent example for others who wanted to pursue their business! “In this time of pandemic, don’t be afraid to make new things, TAKE THE RISK, believe in yourself and no matter what happens always trust the progress.” said Zyrene. Kimberly Shayne Panaligan, ABM12A2, opened her business called “Luscious Pastries.” which features her cakes and pastries since 2019. The inspiring entrepreneur wanted to help her family pay their bills, set aside and earn money for future investments. She started out by borrowing money from her mother and created a small batch of baked goods. She also tried advertisements which results to increase profit over individual sales. “Always continue to move forward. From that I think, you’ll be a step closer to achieve the success that you wished in the beginning.” said Kimberly.

phone. MLBB offers various features such as crowd controls, enjoyable gameplay, and supernatural. It would undoubtedly pique the interest of people of all ages, especially the gamers and even the old ones. The game is now downloadable on mobile devices for free and comes with six different modes: Classic, Brawl, Vs.AI, Custom, Arcade Mode, and Ranked Mode, which is the most recent and exciting mode for its games. If you want to play more casually or refine your skills with a new hero, Classic Mode is a great place to start. If you have recently purchased a hero and are unsure how it works, start by practicing with it in Vs. AI or Custom. Fast phase is what Brawl Mode offers as it contains only one lane and two turrets defending the base in both teams. Moreover, if you think that you are competitive enough and your skills can take you to the top, try to compete in Ranked Mode, where other competent players fight to prove who is the best. The main objective to win the game is to eliminate the Enemy Base Inhibitor. There are ways to kill turrets by using minions/creeps to absorb the turret’s fire damage. When you destroy the final Turret in a lane, you will get super minions that can deal much damage. Following that, critics faced doubts about visuals, gameplay, and, in particular, controls, considering that MLBB’s original platforms were Android and iOS. Take pleasure in the game, knowing that the graphics and gameplay would be enjoyable. As you navigate the maps, fighting enemies and cooperating with your teammates, the game’s button will feel like one of your fingers. We are the fantastic beast! Let us get started!

Francois Czevastien:

rancois Czevastien is a 19-year-old student from Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) taking up a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. He is a growing photographer from the City of Tayabas, Quezon Province, who started his own business in 2019 called ‘VFC. Imagery.’ His business started to grow big in the span of two years through the art he captures behind the lenses amidst pandemic. Just like other aspiring photographers, he started his page for fun without knowing that it will turn his life around. “Mahilig talaga ‘ko mag capture ng iba’t ibang subject especially mga landscape. Wala sa isip ko na magt-turn ito sa business.” he started. Before his hobby turned into a business, he took a small step “Noong una, sumasama lang ako sa mga studio owner at nag a-assist sa kanila hanggang sa nakaipon ako. Yung mga bigay nila sakin na tf (talent fee) inipon ko hanggang sa nakabili na ako ng sariling gamit ko.” He then got his first client, a one-yearold kid where he got nervous as he is still doesn’t know the important shots. Until he got out big by working with the government officials. One work of him got the community eyes was ‘Be Brave. Be Bold. Be Authentic.’ where it tackles body shaming. It was supposed to represent Tayabas City for competition in Quezon SK, but unfortunately, it wasn’t able to be passed, so he uploaded it on his page. This photo unexpectedly reached 10.4 thousand reactions and 7,002 shares on

Facebook. He might be a growing photographer, but he is still a student. There will be a time where responsibilities from a photographer and a student clashed with each other “Natatandaan ko nung nag 3 days ako na shoot tapos dami deadline at the same time exam ko nun.” He said, and the next thing he did was “habang nagsho-shoot nag take ako ng exam tapos nag submit din agad paguwi ng mga requirements.” he continued. It is how being a responsible student-photographer would do in

times of crisis. A truly skilled person in using time management. He also stated that every photographer has their own uniqueness. Just as how he managed to be a photographer and a student at the same time, his business was a fruit of his “Passion,” he said. Despite the young age, he is a well-skilled photographer. Every picture from his lenses turns into an art. His message to all the aspiring photographers, “Don’t think, just do. Create your own identity and love what you do.”
