It is the winter of 1939/1940 and Detective Sergeant Edward Pagan of the Kingston upon Hull City Police Force is a very busy man as wartime has brought his 'patch' more crime, less manpower, and the threat of the Nazi bombing campaign. When busy dealing with a post office burglary where ration coupons are stolen - Eddie is diverted by the sudden murder of a veteran constable whilst he is on night patrol.Pagan helps out at and near the scene and discovers that the corpse has been moved. His search reveals the murder site to be at the rear of a small 'import and export' businesses storage facility. He also later discovers some recent 'radio' debris hidden in a rubbish bin at the same building's rear. He expects these revelations to propel him onto the team investigating the slaying of his old friend and colleague.
