Wow, we have already completed the first quarter of 2025… Time does fly! I am always hesitant to start any new year with a financial or operational projection. So, in true fashion, I have not done that thus far this year. But there are a lot of things going on that I feel I should comment on as they relate to our business and perhaps to you as an employee. Most of them are external factors over which we have little control.
Political Climate and Global Uncertainty
As you are likely aware, President Trump has rolled out unprecedented executive orders that are upsetting the ‘status quo’ in ways not even imaginable! As I have learned in life, such actions can be good or bad. Only time will tell.
This has spurred talk of a US recession, sent the stock market into turmoil, placed the future of many government services in doubt, and created an overall sense of uneasiness among world leaders.
Stock Market Impact and Your 401(k)
Perhaps one of the facts that is at the forefront of your mind is that as of early April, the financial markets are taking a beating. This is a direct result of all the global tariffs that President Trump has put in place. This has unsettled the stock market, and one thing the stock market does not like is uncertainty. Obviously, this potentially impacts each of our 401(k) balances. Hopefully, you have been prudent and made investment choices reflective of your age, your retirement horizon, and your risk tolerance.
I think, bottom line, the shock that the stock market is going through will settle down in time. Hopefully, it will plateau and then start its climb back up just like it has done countless times in history. I see no reason to think any differently this time around. So now is not a time to panic but to remain vigilant about what is happening and act or react accordingly. Stating this, please take advantage of the educational tools that are available within our plan.
Recession History and Lessons Learned
Of course, the talk of recession is unsettling. We experienced a brief recessionary period in early 2020 that was triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, that was short-lived, and many of us were so focused on COVID that we may not have noticed the economic downturn that occurred. The last real recession ended back in mid-2009. It began in late 2007 and was the result of the subprime mortgage crisis.
MESSAGE FROM STAN
At Marek, we felt the effects of that, but we learned a lot of lessons from prior recessions and had positioned ourselves to withstand what are typically short-term downturns. Since then, the US economy has basically been on a tear, and our construction industry has been a huge benefactor of this boom. Because of our prior financial prudence and planning, Marek has been able to enjoy unparalleled growth and success.
Our Financial Strength Today
The same holds true today as we are as financially strong as we have ever been. We are cautious but optimistic that we will be safely insulated from any dire consequences should a recession occur.
Workforce Shortage: A Longstanding Industry Issue
Perhaps the biggest challenge we face is one we are no stranger to, that being the shortage of skilled workers needed to build out all the work we have secured. Workforce availability is and has largely been an issue for construction companies for decades. There just are not enough young men and women coming into the trades.
Our workforce development teams are looking at every avenue to find prospects. Our high schools are graduating large numbers every year, but at age 18, many are looking for something a little less strenuous and more glamorous. They fail to realize that learning a trade is the best way to make a good living and build self-esteem at the same time.
Employee Referral Program: Help Us Build Our Team
One renewed effort, which will soon be announced, is that we’ll be offering a company-wide, referral program for all existing Marek employees, both office and field. If you refer a candidate for one of our field craft positions, and they are hired, including successfully completing the pre-employment process, you’ll become eligible for a referral bonus. After they complete their first six months on the job, you will receive a $500 bonus! And at the end of the year, another $500 if your candidate is still employed with Marek.
I have always felt that our employees are the best source of finding and retaining workers. All of you are experts at what you do and sharing that skill with those who join us is a big part of your legacy. So please take advantage of this exciting program.
Looking Ahead to a Promising Year
In the meantime, we do have an incredible number of projects to build throughout our branches. So, the need to recruit, train, and retain has never been greater.
We are coming off an exceptional year. All branches but one were profitable in 2024, and backlogs are at record levels. Material pricing is a concern because of the tariffs, but despite some choppy economic waters on a national level, 2025 holds a great deal of promise for us here at Marek. We are strong financially, have an incredible team, and plenty of work under contract. All the ingredients for a successful 2025 are certainly in place. Let’s make it happen!
Nuestra solidez financiera actual
SAFETY MOMENT
SAFETY ISN’T MONDAY MORNING - IT’S THE MOMENT
By Don Pilzer, Director of Technical Services Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry (AWCI)
“Safety isn’t Monday morning - it’s the moment. ”This simple yet profound quote, shared by Mike Holland during AWCI’s recent Safety Peer Review, perfectly captured the mindset we encountered throughout our visit with the MAREK team in Houston, Texas. It’s a reminder that safety isn’t something we schedule; it’s something we live. It’s embedded in how we show up, how we lead, and how we look out for each other. Every moment. Every jobsite. Every person.
This spring’s AWCI Peer Review, hosted by MAREK, was more than a routine check-in; it was a reaffirmation of the culture we all strive to build. From the outset, MAREK welcomed us not as inspectors or outsiders, but as fellow professionals invested in each other’s growth. Their openness, humility, and pride in their people made this one of the most authentic safety engagements our team has ever experienced.
Over three full days, our AWCI Safety Peer Review team—Rick Wood and Fabio Correia of J&J Acoustics; Chris Sanders and Matt Reichardt of Valley Interior Systems; Charl Berman of Brady West; Adam Linhardt of E&K; Pete Salazar of South Valley Drywall; Mike Hill of PCI; and myself from AWCI— were joined by our host, Jorge Vazquez of MAREK. Together, we walked job-sites, sat in planning and safety meetings, and, most importantly, listened. Because often, the best indicators of a strong safety culture aren’t found on a checklist—they’re found in conversations with the people actually doing the work.
What we heard was loud and clear: at MAREK, safety isn’t a program; it’s personal.
Jorge and his team pulled back the curtain completely. There were no curated walk throughs or staged stops. They encouraged full transparency and welcomed feedback in areas where they could improve. It takes a strong organization to allow that kind of vulnerability, and an even stronger one to act on it.
As we visited projects, it quickly became evident that MAREK’s people believe in what they’re doing. You could see it in how the crews carried themselves. You could hear it in how foremen and trainees spoke about the work. And you could feel it in the pride they had in each other’s success. Safety wasn’t an obligation; it was an expression of mutual respect.
That tone starts at the top. MAREK’s leadership has cultivated a culture where accountability is not about blame, but about commitment—to each other and to excellence. Foremen lead by example. Trainees are developed, not just directed. And management doesn’t just support the field, they serve it.
Following a day and a half of field visits and office conversations, the peer review team reconvened to analyze observations and prepare a full feedback session for Marek’s leadership. What followed was a threehour presentation led by Chris Sanders, with input from each peer reviewer.
Several key members of MAREK’s management team were in attendance, including company leadership: Stan Marek , CEO; Mike Holland , COO; Phil Nevlud, Houston Division President; John Hinson, President of Regional Operations; and Brent Ballard, President of Residential Operations—all of whom remained fully
engaged throughout the session.
The feedback was balanced and honest— acknowledging strengths while offering thoughtful insights into areas for continued growth. The MAREK team didn’t just sit and listen; they leaned in. They asked questions. They took notes. They embraced the feedback, even when it was tough. And that’s what leadership looks like.
As the session ended, Pete Salazar summed up the spirit of what we had all witnessed with a quote that left the room nodding in agreement:
“Train them so they can go anywhere. Treat them so they don’t want to leave.”
That’s exactly what MAREK is doing. And that’s the standard we should all aspire to.
The AWCI Safety Peer Review program is built on shared trust, honest dialogue, and a collective goal to elevate the safety culture across our industry. MAREK’s willingness to open its doors and invite real critique shows what’s possible when a company is serious about getting better— not just for compliance’s sake, but for the people who make this industry work.

ON THE HORIZON
SHADING THE FUTURE OF SURGICAL INNOVATION
INTUITIVE SURGICAL - EAST BUILDING, GEORGIA
Peachtree Corners may be one of Georgia’s youngest cities, but it’s quickly becoming a hub for cutting-edge technology, and we are ready to support that growth.
After completing the West Building at Intuitive Surgical Peachtree Corners campus, our Atlanta team has been awarded the East Building—another important step in one of the largest economic development projects in Gwinnett County’s 200-year history. The expansion represents a $500 million investment by Intuitive, bringing more than 1,200 high-paying jobs and over 750,000 square feet of new space dedicated to manufacturing, training, and administration.
MAREK will install Mecho Shade’s SolarTrac system, an automated shading solution that adjusts in real time based on sunlight and building orientation. Designed to enhance both energy performance and occupant comfort, SolarTrac is a natural fit for a space where focus, precision, and clarity are essential. By helping to reduce glare, balance daylight, and ease the load on HVAC systems, our team is supporting DPR Construction and architect HOK in creating an environment where people can do their best work.
This phase of the project is being led by Senior Project Manager, TJ Meeks; Field Supervisor, Jonathan Futch; and Mechanic, Mayra Garcia whose experience and attention to detail make them well suited for a job of this complexity.
SHEPHERD CENTER, GEORGIA
The Atlanta crew is gearing up for something special renovating the iconic Shepherd Center, a leading spinal care facility right in the heart of the city. Partnering with Choate Construction, we’ll be tackling this 7-story healthcare upgrade with scopes that includes drywall systems, acoustical ceilings, and shades.
It’s no small feat. With active patients on-site, tight schedules, and downtown logistics, this one’s going to take serious teamwork—and we’ve got just the people for the job. On the drywall side, Project Executive, Marty Shonkwiler; Project Manager, EJ Tobler; Superintendent, Tony Smith; and Field Supervisor, Jack Smith are steering the ship. Over in shades, Senior Project Manager, TJ Meeks; and Field Supervisor, Jonathan Futch are bringing the expertise.
Yes, it’ll be a challenge. But helping upgrade a place that literally transforms lives? That’s the kind of work we’re proud to be part of.
SolarTrac shades reduce glare, manage solar heat gain, and optimize daylight, all while lessening the load on HVAC systems. It’s a smart, energy saving solution that aligns with LEED principles and helps future forward buildings like U.S. Soccer HQ operate more efficiently for years to come.
CENTENNIAL YARDS, GEORGIA
Our Atlanta team is gearing up for a highprofile project in the heart of downtown— Building #1 in the massive Centennial Yards development across from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This marks the first of more than 50 planned buildings in the area.

Our team is responsible for installing manual and motorized shades using Mecho Shade’s SolarTrac system, an intelligent solution that automatically adjusts based on sun position and building orientation. This project supports more than just design— it reflects U.S. Soccer’s broader goals for sustainability, occupant comfort, and operational efficiency. With Senior Project Manager, TJ Meeks; Field Supervisor, Jonathan Futch; and Mechanic, Mayra Garcia leading the way, MAREK is helping bring both performance and innovation to the field—literally.

Shaping the Future, One Student at a Time

At the 2025 Career Expo, our Atlanta team helped students experience what a career in the field could look like, offering hands on demonstrations, insights, and the encouragement to consider a path they can be proud of.
Craft Training Supervisor
Reginald Coleman continues to inspire young men and women to work with their hands, build with purpose, and take pride in what they create. His presence in the classroom and at events help students see that a career in construction is not only possible, but worth pursuing.
That commitment to mentorship was on full display at Berkmar High School’s Signing Day, where three students officially signed on to begin their careers with MAREK after graduation. Having spent the year learning metal framing and drywall through the school’s carpentry class, these students formed a strong connection with Reggie and found a clear path into the industry. Welcome to MAREK Khaleb Clyde, Bryan Espinoza-Canales, and Maleek Williams!

BEYOND THE BID TURNING CONVERSATIONS INTO CONNECTIONS
Ryan Cole- Instructional Designer
Residential teams from across MAREK recently came together for the Beyond the Bid seminar a hands-on workshop led by Randy Hardy from MBS Atlanta.
