Over the past few weeks, our lobby has been filled each morning with new faces eager to begin their journey with MAREK. Some are just starting their careers, others bring experience from different paths, but all share the same goal: to step into a skilled trade and contribute to the growing demand on our projects.
Their journey begins with a two-day orientation that lays the foundation for their success. The first stop is our MS2 safety class, which builds on OSHA 10hour standards but goes a step further by addressing the unique aspects of our work environment.
More than rules and regulations, it emphasizes our responsibility to look out for one another and reinforces the culture of safety that has defined MAREK for decades.
The orientation week also introduces job readiness activities. Candidates share their backgrounds, reflect on their goals, and begin learning the practical skills they will carry into the field. This early investment helps them step onto the jobsite not only more prepared, but also more confident.
For those with less than six months of experience, Bootcamp is the next step. Bootcamp eases the transition into construction by providing hands-on training in the basics: organizing a tool pouch, safely using hand and power tools, and learning framing and hanging techniques. Just as important, it creates a welcoming environment that takes away the nerves of day one. It is a space where new hires can ask questions, practice skills, and begin building relationships that will support them on the job.
Many of our new hires come to us without prior construction experience. With fewer vocational programs available in schools today, we recognize that the trades must compete for attention against a wide range of career paths. That is why we focus on what makes MAREK different: opportunity, training, mentorship, and a career path that can truly change lives.
We have seen this story play out time and again. Someone walks in with little more than determination, and over the years, with the guidance of coaches and mentors, they grow into one of our most skilled craft professionals or respected leaders. Their success is proof that while experience is valuable, mindset and effort matter most.
At MAREK, we are not looking for perfection. We are looking for people who want to show up, work with their hands, and be part of a team that takes pride in building structures that last. Every wall framed, ceiling hung, and finish installed is a reminder of the impact our teams make. This is work that will stand for years to come.
We are proud to welcome each new hire, knowing that with every tool they pick up, they are building more than projects. They are building a future for themselves, their families, and their communities, one skill at a time.
SAFETY MOMENT
BEYOND THE WALLS - HIDDEN HAZARDS
By Jorge Vazquez - MAREK Safety Team
When we talk about jobsite safety in drywall and interior construction, most people picture the obvious risks - sharp tools, heavy materials, or working from ladders. However, some of the most dangerous hazards are the ones we don’t see at first glance. Add in the challenges of late-summer heat and the coming cooler months, and staying alert becomes even more important.
Drywall Dust – A Silent Threat
Drywall dust isn’t just a nuisance - prolonged exposure can cause serious respiratory issues.
• Always wear your N95 mask or respirator when cutting, sanding, or sweeping.
• Use dust-control methods or vacuum-assisted tools
• Keep work areas ventilated: open windows, run fans, and use dust/fume extractors when possible.
Electrical Surprises Behind the Wall
Cutting into drywall without knowing what’s behind it can be dangerous. Hidden wiring or live circuits are more common than you think.
• Always check drawings or use a stud finder with electrical sensing before cutting.
• Coordinate with supervisors to ensure circuits are locked out if work is near electrical.
• Never assume a wire is dead, test it.
Unstable Wall Frames and Overhead Loads
Temporary partitions and partially finished walls can collapse if not properly braced.
• Secure framing during installation.
• Don’t lean heavy materials against unfinished walls.
• Be aware of lift operations or materials being moved overhead — keep out of danger zones.
Housekeeping – The First Step in Safety
Slips, trips, and falls often start with poor housekeeping.
• Keep cords, scrap, and tools clear from walkways.
• Remove debris at the end of each shift.
• Store tools and materials in designated areas to prevent trip hazards.
Weather Watch – Heat Awareness and Seasonal Changes
Even though we’re moving into the fall, heat remains a concern on jobsites.
• Stay hydrated, drink water before you feel thirsty.
• Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, headaches, nausea, or confusion.
• Take breaks in shaded or cool areas when possible.
As the season changes, early mornings and late evenings will begin to cool down.
• Layer clothing so you can adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day.
• Keep gloves and proper outerwear handy for cold or windy conditions.
• Watch out for dew or frost in the mornings that can make surfaces slippery.
Whether it’s drywall dust, hidden wiring, or shifting temperatures, safety hazards aren’t always in plain sight. The safest jobs are the ones where we look for hazards before they find us. Let’s keep each other safe by staying alert, communicating, and making hazard checks part of our daily routine.
Safety doesn’t happen by accident - it’s built in, just like our work.

In Memoriam
A TRIBUTE TO DAVID TROJANOWSKY
It has been more than six months since we lost our friend and longtime teammate, David Trojanowsky. While the days have moved forward, his memory continues to echo through the halls, job sites, and conversations here at MAREK.
David spent 57 years with this company. That’s five decades of experience, loyalty, and stories. He wasn’t just a coworker; he was a familiar voice, a steady hand, and, to many, simply “Uncle Dave.” If you ever heard him start with “I remember, one time,” you knew you were in for a good story, usually one that made you laugh or helped you learn.
He made people feel seen. Whether he was joking with coworkers, sharing drywall knowledge, or surprising a six-year-old visitor with a fire agate from his rock collection, David gave of himself freely. He didn’t meet strangers; he built connections that spanned generations.
As Linda Schaeffer shared, “There was never a dull moment with David. You never knew what to expect. Whenever he misplaced something, he always came to me to help him find it. And if I was out of the office, he’d tell me I couldn’t take off because no one else was doing my job.”
Chris Trojanowsky, who worked with his uncle for 35 years, said, “He was not only my uncle, but he became Uncle Dave to all. He was loved by many and will be remembered for his quirky ways, strong relationships, and the respect he earned over the years.”
Jose Melendez shared a moment that captures David’s consistency and warmth: “Every afternoon when I left, I would say ‘See you later, Uncle David,’ and he would always look over his screen and say, ‘See you later, buddy.’ That Friday, I said it like always. But that Saturday, he passed. I didn’t see him later, but I’ll always remember him and his personality.”
Ronnie Marek, who learned the residential side of the business from him, remembered David as someone who never met a stranger. “He taught me how to estimate houses and apartments, and so much more. We’ll miss him a great deal.”
Brent Ballard reflected on how David naturally brought people together. “His old Marek stories did more than entertain. They reminded us how ties between coworkers stretch across generations and beyond the office.”
Osteen Lopez shared how David’s generosity extended beyond work: “When I brought my son to the office, David struck up a conversation about rocks. Later, he gifted him a fire agate from a hike in Texas. My son still treasures it. That was David—genuine and thoughtful.”
And as Stephanie Hitchcock said, “He reminded us that although people may not always realize it, we’re family here. He said the office felt too quiet when people were missing, and he was right. His absence is still felt.”
From practical jokes and heartfelt conversations to quiet acts of kindness, David left a legacy that lives on in the people he worked with. His presence made this place better, and the memories he left behind continue to bring us together.
We miss you, Uncle Dave. Thank you for the years, the laughs, and the lessons. Your story will always be a part of ours.
REMEMBERING FRANK LAWRENCE
A Life of Craftsmanship, Faith, and Family
We remember Frank Lawrence, a skilled carpenter and valued member of the MAREK family who retired 11 years ago after serving 12 years as a Field Supervisor in Houston. Frank was known for his steady hands, strong work ethic, and calm presence. He was the kind of person you could always count on, whether on the jobsite or during quieter moments off the clock.
If there was a company golf tournament, you could almost always find Frank on the green, clubs in hand and a smile on his face. He loved the game and the camaraderie it brought. Off course, he enjoyed cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros and spending time with friends and family.
Those who had the privilege of working with Frank will remember his craftsmanship, kindness, and quiet confidence. His legacy lives on through the people he worked with, the projects he worked on, and the friendships he built along the way.
COMPANY HAPPENINGS
ATLANTA
We proudly sponsored and participated in the Auburn Building Science Golf Benefit, where we connected with fellow Auburn graduates from JE Dunn, our collaborators on the Wellstar Kennestone project. Supporting this event allows us to give back to building science education and strengthen ties within the Auburn alumni community.
AUSTIN
We also hosted a customer appreciation event with Skanska, our partner on the Warner Media Campus project. It was a great opportunity to deepen our long-standing relationship and bring together both seasoned and newer team members, reinforcing collaboration and shared success on our projects.
2025 FIELD APPRECIATION
We knew it was time to have some fun and show our appreciation, so on June 27th, our MBS Austin branch threw its very first Corn hole Tournament, and wow, did it deliver! Over 180 of our Marek and MEMCO teammates came together, tossing bags and sharing laughs, all while stepping out from behind desks and jobsites to connect in a whole new way.
From the very first toss to the nailbiting final round, the day was packed with cheers, friendly competition, and moments we’ll be talking about for a long time. With great food, even better company, and lots of smiles, it was our way of saying thanks for the hard work everyone brings every day.
The best part? The excitement and turnout showed us we’ve just “bagged” ourselves a new Austin tradition. We can’t wait to do it all again next year and keep the fun, and the friendly rivalry, going strong!
HARLINGEN 2025 CUSTOMER APPRECIATION
Our Harlingen team recently had the privilege of spending quality time with the people who make our work possible: our customers. The evening was the perfect opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, connect on a personal level, and express our sincere gratitude for the trust and partnership that fuel our success.
This kind of customer appreciation event plays a vital role in strengthening relationships, building loyalty, and showing how much we value the people who support us. Events like this are about celebrating our customers, sharing good times, deepening connections that benefit everyone involved.
HOUSTON
2025 MBC/OFL APPRECIATION
Our Houston MBC and Oak Forest Supply teams took a well-deserved break from the summer heat to enjoy an afternoon filled with good food, games, music, and time to relax together. This celebration was a simple but meaningful way to say thank you for the hard work and dedication everyone brings, both on the job and behind the scenes.
Your skill, grit, and teamwork are the driving forces that keep us moving forward. Surrounded by colleagues who care and consistently show up for one another, events like this remind us all what it truly means to be part of the Marek family. Taking time to connect outside of work not only boosts morale but also strengthens relationships, encourages collaboration, and reinforces the positive culture that makes our teams successful.
2025 MBS FIELD APPRECIATION
In June, we celebrated incredible men and women who make up our Houston commercial field team. These crews are the backbone of our jobsites, showing up early, working hard, and delivering the highquality work that shapes the Houston skyline. Leadership and office teams joined them for an afternoon of appreciation featuring great food, meaningful conversations, and raffle prizes.
We extend a special thank you to Demeris BBQ for providing the meal and to everyone who helped make the day a success. Most of all, we thank our field teams for their work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to our customers. We are proud of what you build and even more proud of who you are.
A FACILITY BUILT FOR CHAMPIONS
TCU HUMAN PERFORMANCE CENTER
The new facility brings training, recovery, and collaboration for 22 Division I athletic programs into one practical and purposeful space. From the initial layout line to the final ceiling panel, the team on site focused on precision, coordination, and steady execution. This center was built to support real needs, not headlines.
The work included ground-up construction and interior buildout: framing, drywall, acoustical ceilings, and specialty finishes. High-end ceiling systems integrated AV and lighting, requiring careful planning and accurate installation.
What made a difference was the team’s ability to act fast. When steel misalignments appeared during layout, the crew partnered with the cold-formed metal framing engineer to adjust and preserve the schedule. Daily check-ins with Linbeck and other trades kept sequencing tight around MEP installations. Early field verification of layout avoided critical rework.
Visual craftsmanship took center stage. Wood veneer ceiling panels, Maxxit Agilis with built-in lighting, and USG Illusion perforated panels came together with clean transitions and accurate alignment. The Special Product Division’s eye for detail delivered visual consistency that aligns with architectural intent.
Collaboration with Linbeck enabled quick problem solving and steady progress. The crew’s responsiveness, communication, and attention to site cleanliness earned recognition from the client and design team. Jose Cavazos – Linbeck Senior Project Manager said, “It has been a pleasure working with you again and your outstanding team on this TCU project. Your team always brings their best and supports the visions of the clients we serve as an extension of Linbeck, which is very admirable. From early collaboration for budgeting and constructibility reviews to onsite execution, MAREK, but specifically you and your team on this project have hit it out of the park. Thank you and your team for another successful project!”
Now complete, the center gives TCU’s athletes and students a place to train, recover, and come together. Built to perform and built to last, it amplifies the Horned Frog spirit, especially the battle cry echoing through expertly tuned acoustics: Riff, Ram, Bah Zoo.
MBS Dallas All Star Key Contributors: Drywall/Acoustical Ceilings: Gregorio Cardenas – Field Supervisor, Robert Brazel – Superintendent, Nestor Hurtado – Sr. Project Manager, Special Product Division: Jesus Cacique & Manuel Villagran – Field Supervisors, Julio Saenz & Tommy Weeks – Superintendents, and Fernando Tejada – Project Manager.
FUN FACTS
• Horned Frogs aren’t frogs at all—they’re actually horned lizards, native to Texas and now a beloved university symbol.
• TCU sits on 302 acres lined with live oaks and earned recognition as a Tree Campus USA, thanks to its canopyfilled beauty.
• SuperFrog, the spirited mascot, earned placement in Sports Illustrated’s Top 25 College Mascots.
• First coeducational university in Texas, giving students of both genders access to higher education from the very start.
• Nearly half of the student body comes from out of state, making TCU a true national draw; even though it carries “Texas” in its name.

The drywall scope encompasses patient rooms, fire-rated corridors, shaft walls, and healthcare-grade ceilings in diagnostic, surgical, and treatment areas. With its long duration, the project requires close trade coordination and careful sequencing to maintain hospital safety and operations. Upon completion, the new tower will expand capacity and strengthen the medical center’s ability to provide advanced care for the community.

HOUSTON

This summer was full of growth and development for the Houston team, with programs that built futures, sharpened leadership, and celebrated craftsmanship.
Through our Internship Program, six high school students from Milby and Austin High Schools spent six weeks gaining hands-on experience on active jobsites. Thanks to the partnership with Houston ISD’s Career and Technical Education program, and the support of former MAREK employee and current HISD instructor Arthur Ehmling Jr., students walked away with valuable career insight while parents noticed greater maturity and responsibility at home.
For new helpers, Bootcamp continued to set the foundation for success. Led by Aurelio Flores, the week-long training prepared participants with safety practices, craft skills, and the values needed to step confidently onto a project. Many began with little to no construction background yet left with the tools and direction to build a lasting career.
SAN ANTONIO
Isabel
Abbott - Executive Assistant
Electrical work, plumbing, demolition, and facilities maintenance were just a few of the trade’s youth explored at Alamo Trades Day on July 15. Our San Antonio team partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio to give 20 students a hands-on look at the career paths available in construction.
The event not only introduced future opportunities after high school but also helped build confidence and spark curiosity about what’s possible. A special thank you to Project Manager Oscar Jimenez for bringing this event to life and highlighting the positive impact our industry can have on the next generation.
In addition to Trades Day, eight Drywall Craft Academy participants had the opportunity this summer to cross-train in motorized shades. This hands-on experience introduced them to new products, advanced installation methods, and the integration of technology in modern construction.
By learning this specialty trade, participants expanded their skills beyond drywall, strengthening their versatility and marketability while adding value to MAREK’s service offerings. The ability to work across multiple scopes not only improves project efficiency and problem-solving on the jobsite but also helps shape well-rounded craft professionals prepare for long-term career growth.
LEARNING DEVELOPMENT
Shannon Davis - Talent Development Manager
Craft training was also on display at the annual in-house Craft Competition, where five competitors put their skills to the test. Congratulations to Armando Garibay for earning first place and moving on to represent Houston at the next level. This event was made possible by the leadership of Jessica Colindrez, Alexander Juarez, Ricardo Menchaca, and Aurelio Flores, who guided and encouraged each competitor.
Leadership development remained a top priority as 33 Field Supervisors and Team Leads participated in Beating the Budget Training, guided by Jessica Colindrez and Ricardo Menchaca. The training emphasized not only financial management but also the communication and leadership skills needed to keep projects on track. A highlight was Project Manager Joel Marek’s presentation, which connected field decisions directly to project success and customer relationships.
From high school students exploring careers to experienced supervisors strengthening their leadership, Houston continues to invest in its people, paving the way for stronger teams and a stronger future.
Our Nashville team recently came together for a Working Genius debrief, followed by some Tennessee BBQ. The Working Genius framework, developed helps individuals and teams identify six types of “genius” that are required to get any work done: Wonder, Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement, and Tenacity. Each person naturally thrives in some of these areas, feels competent in others, and may experience frustration in the rest.
By exploring their unique strengths, competencies, and frustrations, the team gained valuable insight into how work gets done and why certain tasks feel energizing while others can be draining. This awareness benefits everyone by:
• Helping people lean into their natural strengths.
• Creating opportunities for teammates to support one another.
• Reducing miscommunication and misunderstandings.
•Building stronger collaboration by making sure all six geniuses are represented.
The debrief was a chance not only to learn about personal and team dynamics, but also to strengthen connections and celebrate what each member brings to the table. It was a great afternoon of learning, reflection, and of course, good food.
Thank you to Don Cerlanek, Mike Feather, Victoria Zapata, Kimberly Rodriguez, Seamus Toal, Jessica Thompson, Marty Shonkwiler, Carlos Pangui, Shannon Davis, Bart Domino, and Jesus Reyna for making the day a success.
