2022/23 SEASON

CELEBRATING GROWTH AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

The 2022/23 season was one of growth for the Marcus Performing Arts Center. As audiences continued to return to live performances post-pandemic, we saw high demand for key titles and the Johnson Financial Group Broadway at the Marcus Center Series. Audience favorite performances included The Hip Hop Nutcracker, Step Afrika!, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, along with seven incredible Broadway shows. Over 228,000 people came through our doors to experience the performing arts and community events.

Bringing our new MPAC Presents performing arts series to the community has allowed us to provide artist masterclasses and workshops to young people, giving them a hands-on learning experience with professional artists. Many of our MPAC Presents artists also give a special daytime performance for K-12 students as part of our Student Matinee Series, now in its second year. Our education and engagement programs serve over 10,000 students each year.

In November, we were proud to reopen our renovated Outdoor Grounds, a space that was truly transformed into a public gathering space for all. With a strong emphasis on accessibility, we wanted to ensure the space would be as welcoming and inclusive as possible. The addition of a War Memorial dedication more prominently honors those who bravely served and recognizes MPAC’s long history as a War Memorial building. The reinvigorated Outdoor Grounds paved the way for the return of Rainbow Summer, which launched our 2023/24 season, allowing us to continue to offer programming and arts opportunities to our community and to partner with area organizations. This fulfills our strategic goals of creating a more racially representative, diverse, and inclusive community and being a welcoming gathering place for all.

MPAC’s Cultural Ambassador, Donald Driver, joined us in January for a three-day residency with Step Afrika!, an award-winning African American dance company dedicated to the art of stepping. You can learn more about this exciting residency on page 8. Our partnership with Driver as Cultural Ambassador continues to promote the power of the arts, culture, and community engagement by making the performing arts more accessible to underserved youth, families, and communities of color throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. This program illustrates the intentional, innovative actions that MPAC is taking to make the arts more accessible, engage a more diverse audience, and focus on building connections through high-quality arts and entertainment that reflect the Milwaukee community.

Looking ahead, we are energized by the impact we are making on our community and the potential for future growth. We are especially grateful for the generosity of our donors, who have grown tremendously in numbers. Their unwavering support truly fuels our mission. We are committed to building on this momentum and continuing to serve as a hub for artistic expression and cultural enrichment in Milwaukee.

Thank you to our donors, subscribers, partners, and audiences for joining us this season at the Marcus Performing Arts Center. Together, we can create a community that celebrates and champions the transformative power of the arts in Milwaukee and beyond.

“I think that we’ve seen through this program just how galvanizing it can truly be. We want to share this, we want to build this community. Stepping is something that is literally done in celebration of community.”

STEPPING UP TO MAKE AN iMPACt

In January, 2023 the Marcus Performing Arts Center proudly presented a three-day residency with Step Afrika!, an award-winning African American dance company dedicated to the art of stepping, in partnership with MPAC Cultural Ambassador Donald Driver.

As artists from Step Afrika! shared their rich traditions of stepping, MPAC was filled with energy and excitement. Two engaging workshops brought together individuals of all ages and backgrounds, fostering creativity, unity, and cultural appreciation. A highlight of the residency was a captivating student matinee performance, where over 2,000 young people experienced the power of live performance.

Audiences were treated to a mesmerizing public performance, followed by a Q&A session that provided attendees with a deeper understanding of the art form and its cultural significance.

Additionally, in a collaborative effort with the Divine 9 Greek organizations within the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) of Milwaukee, MPAC hosted a Roll Call showcase. MPAC also partnered with HYFIN to facilitate a panel discussion, which served as a platform for dialogue and reflection and sparked meaningful conversations within the community.

Step Afrika!’s residency left a lasting impact on Milwaukee and truly aligned with our goals to advance racial equity, diversity, and inclusion through transformative artistic experiences. This residency showcased the power of the arts to unite, educate, and transform lives.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: THE PECK FAMILY FOUNDATION

The Peck Family Foundation’s recent capital contribution of $500,000 to the Marcus Performing Arts Center underscores a philanthropic legacy deeply entwined with the advancement of the arts in Milwaukee. Their generous gift will add two additional Bernie’s Bars to the recently renovated Outdoor Grounds.

These additions will join existing areas of the building named after the Peck family, including the Peck Lobby and Peck Pavilion, and the original Bernie’s Bar in the Anello Atrium.

The Peck Family Foundation’s philanthropy extends beyond financial contributions; it is a testament to their belief in the transformative power of the arts to foster community pride and engagement. Over the years, the foundation has provided significant support to MPAC, contributing to various projects that enhance the facility’s accessibility, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.

These improvements reflect Bernie Peck’s vision of philanthropy as a vehicle for enhancing the quality of life for Milwaukee’s citizens, a legacy of generosity that continues to shape the city’s cultural landscape.

At the 18th annual BASH, the Peck Foundation was honored with the Visionary iMPACt Award for their long-standing philanthropic commitment to advancing and amplifying the arts in Milwaukee. That commitment to generosity and improving quality of life has had an immeasurable impact on our thriving arts community in Milwaukee, especially at the Marcus Performing Arts Center.

Thank you to the Peck Family Foundation for their support!
