01 HOTEL BARRANQUITAS Master’s Thesis Project

Hotel Barranquitas THESIS PROJECT

Analyzing the Modern Movement and its effects on the urbanization of Puerto Rico, this research was carried out based on the Operation Bootstrap program and its effects on the development of an industry of tourism in Puerto Rico between 1950 and 1970. Some of the first projects to decentralize tourism into the Island's interior were promoted by the Martocci Plan in 1949, followed by the construction of the Hotel Barranquitas in 1953, designed by the architecture firm Toro Ferrer and Torregrosa. Also, the tourist gaze towards our identity reality and its relationship with the tropical landscape was part of the investigation. Finally, the idealization of El Hotel Barranquitas was inquired based on the vision of the North American press and through the regional memory. It is clear from this investigation that the original design of the hotel did not take into account the reality and local needs, with the exclusive dependence on tourism for its operation, culminated in the closure of the property in the early 1980s. This project proposes to establish a program that embraces our tropical reality, promotes agricultural research in the interior of the Island, and respects the memory of El Barranquitas Hotel by maintaining its original function as a tourist attraction, accessible to the local population.

02 HUB Urban Design Project

Emphasizing the connection with the pedestrian walk path at Saldañas Street this project crates a culinary and commercial volume taking in consideration the heights of nearby buildings, usually about two or three floors. This main commercial volume extrudes its facade into the street, providing shade along the walk path and will activate this new walkable street with restaurants, bars and stores. The second floor will host a co-working space for new graduates and entrepreneurs that are seeking new opportunities in the neighborhood of Rio Piedras. The third floor will have a recreational complex with a pool for the residents and a gym. The residential tower is accessed through the courtyard. This apartments are organized by a main service core that accommodates the kitchen, bathrooms, closets and laundry and could be divided or joined to form part of a two bedroom apartment or two separate studios. We are seeking to accommodate new graduates and young professionals that are looking for an accessible rent apartment or studio and that could start their professional lives in Rio Piedras.

03 TERROIR Architecture Competition

TERROIR WINE HOUSE

3rd Prize Winner + BB Student Award

Wine tasting is the culmination of a delicate and extensive process, which we summarized into three main steps: cultivation, fermentation, and aging. From below, a stony submerged platform will become the base for the emerging space; the same way soil becomes the foundation for seed germination.

Within it, a pond representing the element of water. The plant foliage takes shape as a suspended object over its stem, and this will evolve as a symbol of the "farming to wine" transformation. The final "house" shape will veil on white to reveal the duality between the typical vinery structure and the contemporary minimal Portuguese architecture.Terroir Wine House is located perpendicular to the vineyard below, accessed through a main ramp between a harsh rock side and a delicate water wall. This access leads to the main wine-tasting room with an area of 65 square meters. In it, a single solid table with an integrated central fire pit gathers 30 people.

04 BARJÁN Desert Housing Competition

BARJÁN Given the constant change of temperature and scenery in the Sahara Desert this proposal stands as a static community based on a housing module. Each one is composed of two single-family units with a shared interior courtyard that provides natural lighting. The repetition of this module, and its whole, emulates the “barján” dunes, providing shelter for the changing climate, and a barrier against the rough conditions. The materials used; adobe, wood, and fabric, are accessible to the Tueareg community and provides a passive architecture. The design demonstrates a clear contrast between the white adobe, the translucent fabric and the sand, which blends with the project.

These materials are directly related to their current daily life. The project manifests a direct continuation of the vast dunes on the distant landscape.

What if we were to change the idea of a static observatory reached by an independent trail to a moving union of these components? In order to do this, we took the predetermined program area for the observatory platform and conceded it to the air balloon platform. We then, placed the platform on top of a rail that controls its trajectory. This control rail is ecofriendly, thanks to its specified anchor points that has a minimum ground impact. The helium balloon achieves an easy assembly and disassembly, permitting an efficient and accessible construction process. Upservatory unifies, creating an unforgettable experience, while respecting the Turkish balloon culture and creating a new idea of the volcano through human perspective and experience. Go Up! The trail begins with a pathway that extends from the ski lift to a pick up platform. The globe is located at the center of this platform; once the pick up has been made, it elevates and descends to ground level through an electric mechanism.

MAIN LOOKOUT POINT The balloon elevates and starts its path towards the main lookout point where it hovers to offer passengers a visual of the city and an impressive view of the volcano’s eye.

INSIDE THE VOLCANO The next stop is located indise the volcano’s crater where the passengers experience the sensation of flying above it. After this point, the balloon returns to it’s initial point to disembark passengers and pickup new ones.

06 MORIVIVÍ Urban Furniture Design Project

MORIVIVÍ The tropical plant “Moriviví” (“Morí” as death and “viví” as alive), closes its leaves responding to any physical contact, as a defense mechanism. Our urban furniture captures the first seconds of this movement and places it in a static form. This allows the creation of a planter area (Morí) and a resting area (viví).
