Amer Shipping orders dry cargo vessels from Concordia Damen

Inland shipping construction yard Concordia Damen will deliver two CDS Dry Cargo 110 vessels to Amer Shipping. Sustainability considerations and the hull shape of this in-house developed ship type were the deciding factors, partly because it allows skippers to sail longer at (very) low water levels, which is predicted to occur often in the coming years. Amer Shipping already has a fleet of 57 vessels, including owned tankers, dry cargo, and container vessels as well as associated ships. The company transports approximately 8 million tonnes of cargo per year, mainly raw materials for construction projects and project cargo for various industries.

Sustainability pilot project to reduce plastic waste

Recently, the technology group Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation have carried out a joint pilot project to reduce plastic materials being used in marine operations to boost maritime sustainability by preventing plastics from harming the environment as well as to lower CO2 emissions. As a result of this pilot, Wärtsilä Global Logistics Services is in the process of changing its spare part packaging to achieve a reduction of approximately 40% in the amount of plastic used. The project was carried out on two Carnival Cruise Line vessels. It involved the use of smarter packaging material for spare parts, primarily using recycled paper packaging materials instead of plastic. The change in packaging will be incorporated for deliveries to Wärtsilä customers in both the marine and energy sectors.

Single-fuel LNG-engines to dual-fuel LNG/MGO-engines

Norwegian cruise ferry operator Fjord Line is to convert sister ships Stavanger ordand Bergens ordfrom singlefuel LNG-engines to dual-fuel LNG/MGO-engines. “The energy crisis, caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has led to extraordinary volatility and significant price increases in LNG and the price increases have been far higher than for traditional and less sustainable energy sources at sea”, saysFjord Line. It notes that it receives no government energy-related financial aid and says that dramatically increased energy costs for the two LNG-fuelled ships are “significantly above a financially sustainable level.” Both vessels were originally ordered as dual-fuel vessels, but the shipbuilding contract was amended to make both purely LNG-fuelled.

Successful sea trials

Kooiman Marine Group recently performed successful sea trials on board the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Hegemann V. The newbuild, developed by Kooiman in a collaboration with Hegemann, is designed to execute multiple types of dredging activities on specific locations. With a suction tube on the starboard side and an inboard dredge pump, she can load 1,500m3 of material. Unloading the dredged material can be done by opening a row of bottom doors. The material can be pumped by one or two series-connected dredge pumps with discharge connections on both sides of the ship or via a bow connection at the front.

Leclanché receives orders for 22.6MWh of battery systems

Leclanché continues to reach new milestones in the electrification of marine transport and announces that it has been selected as the battery technology provider for two hybrid vessels being built for Stena Line and Brittany Ferries. Each battery system has a capacity of 11.3MWh and the RoPax ferries will be the world’s largest hybrid vessels – surpassing Leclanché’s prior record-breaking marine projects. These projects, planned for delivery in 2024 and 2025, further consolidate Leclanché’s backlog and ranks the company as a leading player in the e-marine space. The two nearly 195m long hybrid E-Flexer ferries have been designed and developed by Stena RoRo in collaboration with Brittany Ferries.

SH Diana ready for maiden cruise

On 26 January, Swan Hellenic announced that SH Diana, the newest and largest vessel in its ultramodern five-star fleet, was floated out of dry dock at the Helsinki Shipyard some days before. SH Diana’s fitting out is now already under way, leaving her comfortably on schedule for her maiden cruise, ‘Mysteries of Carthage and the Moors’, which will be leaving Palermo in Italy for Lisbon in Portugal on 15 April. SH Diana will then make her way up the West Atlantic seaboard of Europe for explorations of the Arctic.

Double underwater stern tube seal repair

At the end of 2022, Hydrex divers/technicians carried out a double underwater stern tube seal repair on a RoRo vessel berthed in Port of Burnie, Tasmania. The vessel was leaking oil, making an on-site repair necessary. Using two Hydrex flexible mobdocks simultaneously the team was able to carry out the entire operation on- site and underwater in just 60 hours, saving the owner an expensive and time-consuming trip to drydock. A successful operation was concluded with leakage tests, the removal of the flexible mobdocks, and the reinstallation of the rope guards. i. hydrex.be

Environmentally friendly Arvia

P&O Cruises’ latest cruise vessel Arvia left Meyer Werft’s covered building dock II (Hall 6) in August of 2022. Thefloat out manoeuvre began in the morning at around 9:00 am. The vessel moored at the out-fitting pier in the shipyard harbour after that, where the masts and funnel were lifted onto the ship by crane.

Arvia lied in the shipyard harbour until the Ems conveyance in October. The vessel thus formed the backdrop for the NDR2 Papenburg Festival on 2 and 3 September of 2022. Until the conveyance, the interior work on board was continued and further technical tests have been carried out.

Arvia measures over 180,000GT, is 344.5m long, 42m wide and identical in construction to her sister ship Iona, which was already delivered in 2020. After her completion, around 5,200 passengers will be able to go on board. Like Iona, Arvia will be powered by environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG). This ensures significantly lower emissions at sea, as neither sulphur oxides nor soot particles are released. This is currently the cleanest form of propulsion in shipping. Another highlight for the passengers on board is the atrium, which is glazed over three decks and will o er a unique view of the sights and cities visited.

After the undocking of Arvia, the floating engine room module (FERU) for Carnival Jubilee, which will be delivered at the end of 2023, was manoeuvred into the then free building dock II. The front part of the cruise ship has already been built there in block construction in the months before the float out. The FERU was built at Neptun Werft in Rostock and was transferred to Papenburg.

The high Meyer-standards

On 15 December 2022, Meyer Werft handed over Arvia to the British shipping company P&O Cruises. “The current tense global situation, with supply bottlenecks and material shortages poses challenges for the construction of such complex cruise ships. But thanks to the team’s performance we were able to overcome these hurdles and today once again hand over a ship that meets the high Meyer-standards. For this, I would like to thank all those involved for their great commitment”, says Managing Director of Meyer Werft Jan Meyer.

In addition to reducing CO2-emissions, because Arvia is powered by environmentally friendly LNG, emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter can be almost completely eliminated, and sulphur oxides completely avoided. All cruise ships in Meyer Werft’s current order book feature this low-emission propulsion system.

Architectural highlights and delights

The ship has 2,659 cabins and o ers guests an extensive sports and entertainment programme. A crowd puller will be the SkyDome, an entertainment area with a pool whose glass dome can be opened for the planned warmer cruising areas. There are 84 glass panes per element that can be opened – an architectural highlight.

Another first for the line is 6th Street Diner with retro seating, atmospheric lighting and juke box and serving allAmerican flavours including speciality fried chicken and wa es with bourbon mascarpone. The Olive Grove is an Informal restaurant situated mid-aft on Deck 8 (Promenade Deck) on the opposite side from The Quays. O ering a feast of delicate spices, harmonious flavours and evocative aromas, little wonder Sindhu is a firm foodie favourite.

“The two project teams from the shipyard and the shipping company, the many suppliers as well as the classification society have done an excellent job under extremely di cult conditions”, says Kim Olin, Project Manager of Arvia.

First itineraries

Arvia arrived in Southampton in preparation for her inaugural sailing on 18 December 2022. The vessel was greeted with appropriate fanfare to mark the auspicious occasion, bringing new and elevated cruising to the European market before the ship headed to the Caribbean for the winter season.

“It was a truly remarkable moment as, after the years of design and build, Arvia arrived at Southampton ahead of the maiden voyage and then departure for the Caribbean season”, says Paul Ludlow, P&O Cruises president.

Arvia will o er a wide assortment of sailings, beginning with her two-week inaugural cruise which departed on 23 December 2022. After that, she departed on a 15-night transatlantic crossing from Southampton to Bridgetown, Barbados, which was one of the ship’s winter homeports i. meyerwerft.de
