MV Vertom Patty

At the end of 2022, the team of Thecla Bodewes Shipyards was pleased to announce the o cial delivery and handing over of MV Vertom Patty to the Vertom Group.

MV Vertom Patty is the first in a series of six 7,000dwt dieselelectric multipurpose dry cargo vessels to be built by the Dutch yard. The newbuild vessels are ordered by the Vertom Group, one of the leading short sea shipping operators within Europe. The o cial delivery of the vessel took place at the Thecla Bodewes Shipyards facility in Harlingen.

Vertom Patty was successfully launched at the shipyard on Friday 23 September 2022. To emphasise the importance of the launch, this first vessel in the series of no fewer than six, was festively christened by Mrs Patty Pols, the wife of the late Mr Pols, founder of Vertom. The vessel was commissioned in Kampen in the weeks after the launch.

A series of sea trials conducted in the

North Sea proved that the vessel is capable of exceeding her contract specifications. The sophisticated and modular designed diesel-electric propulsion system is a further example of the shipyard’s focus on delivering future proof sustainable vessels by using innovative solutions. With her innovative hull design and diesel-electric propulsion system, there is no doubt that MV Vertom Patty will turn heads wherever she goes.

Ready for the energy transition

“MV Vertom Patty is a great addition to our fleet”, says Arjan de Jong, CEO of Vertom Group. “Her size and volume in combination with her extremely low fuel consumption numbers perfectly match

Vertom Group

Vertom Group is an experienced and reliable partner focused on professional maritime services and support concerning sea-transport. In the past 45 years, Vertom Group has built a strong track record in the short sea shipping market. Their extensive international network enables them to provide tailor-made shipping solutions that match the specific needs of their clients. Vertom o ers solutions for all maritime services, including port agencies and liner services. They continuously follow new market developments and apply the latest technologies to anticipate the changing needs of their clients. Vertom Group currently operates a modern fleet of around 100 vessels in the range 1,500 to 10,000DWT.

our company targets to reduce carbon intensity by 40% by 2030. After the successful sea trials, we are glad to see she is ready for her maiden voyage.”

“This is a big step, and a proud day, for us”, comments Thecla Bodewes, CEO of Thecla Bodewes Shipyards. “The combination of partners that came together to construct these high specification vessels, designed to trade safely and e ciently in the challenging short-sea shipping market conditions, is truly remarkable. Our ships are ready for the energy transition and demonstrate again that Dutch technology is leading the world.”

Tailor-made shipping solutions

Along with its 118.83m length over all, a beam of 14.30m and a 6.23m draught, these 7,000dwt vessels are especially developed to Vertom Group’s requirements for providing tailor-made shipping solutions for their clients. The completely box-shaped cargo holds ensure optimal loading flexibility and maximum cargo intake. The detailed engineering is performed by Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, in close collaboration with Groot Ship Design. The CFD optimisation of the hull design was performed for a fuel-e cient speedpower performance, powered by a future proof modular electric propulsion system. This system distributes the vessel’s energy load more e ciently, by using several smaller engines that adjust to the current sailing profile for the most e cient combustion. This hybrid concept is designed to be ready for future developments, by means of the ability to make the vessel’s propulsion methanol-electric or hydrogen-electric.

Next deliveries

Keel laying ceremonies of both hull number 359 and hull number 360 took place last September. All six vessels are being developed and constructed at the Thecla Bodewes Shipyards facility in Kampen, the Netherlands, in collaboration with experienced Dutch suppliers and subcontractors. Further deliveries are scheduled from 2023 to 2025. i. vertom.nl i. tbshipyards.com i. grootshipdesign.com
