Los Feliz Small Lot Subdivision Spring 2020 // Course: ARC3021L // Instructor: Luis Gil

The project sought to enhance the privacy of the inhabitants living in each unit by creating concealed void spaces framed by a thick wall that swallows the servant spaces of the house such as stairs, bathrooms,and storage. Thus the main living spaces are discreet, and allows inhabitants to comfortably look out of the carefully framed and recessed voids. The private and public spaces of the house all revolve a concealed courtyard which blends in with the other voids on the facade. The units are arranged so that each is alloted a small yard to preserve the feeling of living within a subruban community, despite the spatial constrictions given by the typology.

West Hollywood Mixed Use Development Spring 2020 // Course: ARC3021L // Instructor: Luis Gil

A light perforated skins conceals the the voids of the staggered form on Santa Monic Blvd. The building is defined by a hiearchy of voids, small, medium, and large, creating the balconies, entrances, and terraced roof gardens of the housing project. The ground level holds 15,000 sf of retail space surrounding a concealed common courtyard at its center which is accesible through three alleyways. 24 units of housing are placed above the retail space, forming a staggered volume with private terraced gardens for the residents at each level of the project.

Mount Vetter Scientist’s Retreat Fall 2019 // Course: ARC3011L // Instructor: Roberto Sheinberg

A punctured singular linear element holds all public and private spaces of the scientist retreat as it hovers over the natural site spanning between an arrival platform and the summit.

The Scientist Retreat stems from the idea of compacting the program within a single linear form and subdividing it into four platforms stepping at equidistant intervals from one another. These platforms are arranged within a spanning element which bends and cantilevers toward the south, framing a view of the mountains for the open meeting space at the summit. The platforms are shaped in plan through the skewing of parallel datum lines into oblique lines, emphasizing the view from every room into unique and specific directions. The program spaces are elevated in order to accommodate for a public ramp which sweeps under the monolithic form, creating a tension between the levity of the cantilevered ramps and a concrete tower that grows out of the ground, creating the platform for the span to sit on. The levity of the ramp and its cantilevers, which grow out of having minimal impact on the topography, are juxtaposed by the massiveness of the levitated volumes above, thus emphasizing the procession toward the summit. The main circulation of the retreat is a continuation of the ramp which proceeds into a staircase offset from the main program, and guides the inhabitants to the scientists’ office at the highest point of the project. Light enters the project through two different fenestration systems: one is a series of light wells which penetrate the building in section and act to illuminate the rooms through indirect sunlight, and the second is an arrangement of carefully placed apertures superimposed onto the main façade which frame the view of the mountains.

Post Covid-19 Architecture Design Center Fall 2020 // Course: ARC4011L // Instructor: Yasushi Ishida

After conducting research, it was discovered that the main frictions in people’s lives during the pandemic were the lack of transition between living space and work space, the lack of interaction and collaboration with their colleagues, and connectivity issues. My project proposes a hybridized solution to teaching, that focuses on maximizing digital resources and minimizing studio occupancy to provide a safe environment where students and faculty feel comfortable and have access to all the resources they need at school. Criteria that help minimize studio occupancy and enhance the space include limiting the amount of students that have access to studio at any given moment, creating open and versatile spaces that allow students to walk around freely during their allotted time, and enhancing the relationship between the interior and exterior to improve air circulation and encourage students to not stay indoors.
