SOUTH HAMS’ LEADING E STAT E AG E N T

Welcome… TO OUR VERY LATEST ISSUE OF SIMPLY SOUTH HAMS Welcome to our latest Autumn/Winter edition of Simply South Hams, showcasing our most recently marketed properties from our network of South Hams offices. As I write the property market remains relatively stable with a balance of buyers and sellers. Interest rates remaining low are offsetting, to a large extent, the economic uncertainty created by Brexit and other political influences. For buyers who cannot see what they are looking for, either in this bespoke magazine or on the web, I would urge you to call one of our offices to discuss your needs as there are many people selling at the moment, not wishing to be exposed to the open market. Making sure more of the right people ‘sea’ your property, Marchand Petit attended the 2017 Southampton Boat Show, which attracts a worldwide audience. It’s a great venue to promote coastal homes to those who love to live near the water. Continuing supporting events in the community, we celebrated our second show stand win this summer. Congratulations to our Residential and Lettings teams from Kingsbridge, on winning the Perpetual Cup for the Best Show Stand at the recent 135th Kingsbridge Show, in collaboration with partners South Hams Fencing & Landscaping, Garden Time and the Salcombe Harbour Hotel. We found it invaluable to be on hand to meet buyers and sellers alike. (See photo to the right capturing the celebratory moment). Simply a landmark Land Rover’s Halewood production plant in the UK has built 600,000 units of the Evoque in just six years, bringing Range Rover luxury and refinement to new customers around the world.

To celebrate six years of success, Land Rover has announced a new Landmark edition. The Evoque Landmark is available in a vibrant Moraine Blue colour – inspired by the turquoise lakes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Priced from £39,000, the Landmark edition made its global debut at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and orders are now open.

Six years after going on sale, sales reached an all-time high for a single month both globally and in the UK. The UK registered a record 6,781 Evoques in March 2017 and almost 18,000 Evoques were sold globally.

“The Evoque has been an indisputable success. It’s our biggest selling model in the UK and continues to thrive six years after launch, it’s a fantastic achievement and worthy of celebration.

Demand is still increasing for the pioneering luxury compact SUV that delivers critically-acclaimed design, desirability and all-terrain capability to the segment it created in 2011.

The Evoque Landmark edition is also available in Yulong White and Corris Grey. It has a dynamic body kit and grey exterior design details including a fixed panoramic roof in Carpathian Grey, 19-inch Gloss Dark Grey alloy wheels and Graphite Atlas grille, bonnet, fender vent

An Evoque rolls off the Halewood production line every 170 seconds, with Evoque Convertible also being produced in Halewood since 2016. Most are for export to one of 130 markets, with additional manufacturing in China and Brazil to meet local market demand.

In fact, 80 per cent of UK-built Evoque models are exported, finding owners across the globe from Monaco to Manila. Jaguar Land Rover is one of the UK's largest exporters and generates around 80 per cent of its revenue from overseas sales.

Evoque has Range Rover's largest trophy cabinet: the model has won more than 200 awards internationally from prestigious 'Car of the Year' and ‘Best Compact SUV’ accolades to special recognition for technology, design and engineering.

The Landmark edition is available with Land Rover’s latest technology including optional 10-inch InControl Touch Pro system featuring apps such as Spotify and a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot. The optional Remote Premium app for a smartphone or smart watch lets owners check the fuel level, lock status, location and even pre-heat or cool the cabin. Yvonne Coomber Art Jackie Harmer speaks with South Hams based artist Yvonne Coomber This year is a celebration for Yvonne Coomber. It marks the first

work. They sing of all that is good in the world. Therefore I was

delighted to be able to talk to Yvonne to discover more about the

woman behind the gorgeous creations and to learn her influences.

I learnt of her adventures of her early twenties exploring the world

and how these early experiences still directly feed into her practise

immersed herself in wild and sacred parts of Britain. Yvonne and

Poppy also lived in the Andalusian Mountains. The warmth, wildness

and gentleness of these year are still woven into her paintings. When

her daughter Poppy reached school age Yvonne returned to Sussex study Fine Art Painting for four years.

It was on completion of her formal training that Yvonne relocated to

the south west where she began her career as a professional artist. Subsequently her established reputation has grown rapidly. She

exhibits in London, New York, Hong Kong, Dubai and in Europe.

In addition her work has been featured on BBCs Countryfile and will

be aired on 'Money for Nothing' this autumn. Yvonnes paintings are also held in many private and corporate collections worldwide.

Yvonne is married to fellow artist Mike Boyer and they have a shared

family of four children. Yvonne and Mike frequently trek the coastal

British grown multi-stem trees, from the uk’s leading specialist, Based in the south hams, devon

www.newwoodtrees.co.uk

At Home in the South Hams

Jeremy and Carol Robinson moved to the South Hams in 2006. At that time they had a 9 month old daughter and were expecting twins. At the time they were running a successful Conference and Event Management company, with many well known high street clients, including HMV, Game and PC World. After a few years with their family growing up and things slowing down in the conference business due to the recession, they decided to venture into holiday lets.

Within the grounds of their home near Dittisham they had a 2 bedroom cottage, which had been used as holiday accommodation in the past and a derelict barn, which they proceeded to renovate and create a stunning and luxurious holiday let sleeping 6 people. Having run the 2 properties for a couple of years, they decided to add to their portfolio a 1950’s Airstream Caravan which they refitted to include all modern conveniences such as under floor heating, air conditioning, power shower, fitted kitchen and mains drainage. More recently they have added a cedar hot tub.

The final piece in their jigsaw in creating a small intimate holiday venue was the addition of four luxury Cedar Yurts in the woods surrounding the house, called Woodpecker, Buzzard, Owl and Pheasant.

The Little Coombe Farm Estate as a holiday venue is now complete, offering 2 areas with accommodation. The Cedar Yurts situated in the

woods offer luxury accommodation for up to 5 people. The Yurt inspired houses have under floor heating, 2 shower rooms, a fully fitted kitchen, a wood burning stove and on the outside deck area is a wood burning hot tub, they even offer Tesla Electric car charging points in the parking area.

Separate to the Yurt area near the main house is the Airstream, Little Coombe Barn and the recently refurbished Little Coombe Cottage. All of

which have access to the newly built tennis court and games barn, which has a pool table, table tennis table and table football. More recently the barn has been used as a venue for a sit down lunch for 40 people to celebrate an 80th birthday. Jeremy and Carol are considering offering the Little Coombe Farm Estate as a venue for weddings in the future.

Carol with an eye for interior design has been responsible for all the interiors of the properties, which have been done to a very high standard with Jeremy overseeing the building work and designing the Cedar Yurts, which were

built by local carpenters. The Yurts are proving very popular and they have had a number of enquiries from people wanting one on their own land. As a result of this Jeremy and Carol have created a spin off company offering a small range of round buildings that can be used for anything from a small studio in the garden as an office or extra accommodation to a full Cedar Yurt such as their holiday lets sleeping 5 people. They can be contacted on 01803 722900, their websites are www.littlecoombefarm.co.uk and www.cedaryurts.co.uk

Jack Wills in the South Hams

Founded in the South Hams back in 1999, Jack Wills, the British fashion and lifestyle brand, opens its Dartmouth store.

Europe – and in Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal. It also closely follows openings in Marlborough and the coastal location of St Ives in Cornwall, as the brand adds to its portfolio in key locations across the country.

The new store, located on The Quay in Dartmouth, South Devon, sells the full range of men’s and women’s clothing as well as Jack Wills accessories. Dartmouth is a beautiful little town situated on the banks of the River Dart and is a holiday destination beloved by many with its coastal vistas.

Established by Peter Williams in 1999, as a single shop in the seaside town of Salcombe, Jack Wills has since expanded to become an international brand with over 90 stores across the globe, including those in the UK, US, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Middle East.

This is the fourth new store opening for Jack Wills this year in the UK, following last month’s opening in Sylt, Germany – a first in mainland

Commenting on the new store, Peter Williams, Founder and CEO of Jack Wills, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be opening our new store

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Gallery 5 is a gem of a gallery situated in Salcombe’s ‘Art and Maritime Quarter’. Set amongst the working boatyards and crafts people and near to Salcombe’s new Gin Distillery and Bar. A two minute walk from Shadycombe car park, its charm seduces all who venture along historic Island St.

For those averse to the usual formal gallery experience, this is a far more friendly artspace – one which is guaranteed to catch your attention with one of John’s giant Lobsters hanging outside: an exquisite work of art painted with iridescent colours on sea-worn timbers from local working fishing boats, a most perfect invitation to enjoy the relaxed ambience within.

In fact the words ‘local’ and ‘working’ sum up the ethos of Gallery 5 perfectly. Initially set up as a 110 • FEATURE

“Its charm seduces all who venture along historic Island St” collective of artists nine years ago, it’s now run by partners John Aspden – a painter, and Magles Denning – a photographer, who are dedicated to promoting local artists and talented artisans with a focus on affordable, contemporary and original work.

The well curated art on display shows differing perspectives on the various elements, textures, and colours that comprise our landscape. The sensuous; the dynamic; even the transcendent

qualities to be found at sea – all are reflected within these charming stone walls.

Large scale photographs of the local coastline; original abstract sweeping canvases; paintings framed to order; limited edition prints; silver jewellery cast from locally found shells. Exquisite glasswork imbued with gold and silver leaf; ceramics both decorative and functional; as well as bespoke, hand-crafted furniture made to design. All this and more!

John and Magles acknowledge that many of us like to buy art as a gift or to commemorate a special occasion, which increases in value over time….. a gesture that carries memories of a place and times shared. A warm welcome awaits! www.gallery5salcombe.co.uk

Locally grown multi stem trees

When buying a tree you don’t often think where it is coming from, so you may be surprised to learn that trees sold in the UK are generally imported from countries such as Germany and Italy. This unfortunately puts our demand for trees at odds with key industry issues such as sustainability and bio-security, as well as the unpredictable British weather, in which some southern European specimens can struggle. When you combine these issues with a weak pound and uncertainties over our future trading terms with Europe, there has never been a better time to consider buying trees grown right here in the South Hams.

0134 • FEATURE

At New Wood Trees, we have created a specialist tree nursery offering homegrown trees that provide all the aesthetic appeal of their European counterparts, but grown from hardy native stalwarts such as the Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) Hawthorn (Craetagus mongyana) and Field Maple (Acer campestre). These trees are grown and meticulously shaped over the years into the much loved architectural multi-stem style, whilst also providing the peace of mind that they will thrive in their native climate. New Wood Trees also focus on multi-stem trees. We do this for their architectural style and instant aesthetic appeal. Instead of a single and somewhat formal vertical stem, a multi-stem tree has three, five or seven stems that grow and spread to enhance the overall presence of the tree. The multiple stems also act to broaden the canopy of the tree, giving it a size worthy of a much older specimen. In addition, if you value the often under appreciated beauty of tree bark, the extra stems give more opportunity to appreciate its colour and texture. Our thirty-five acre site in the rolling hills of the South Hams, Devon, is home to over 80 different tree varieties. Nursery visits are encouraged to tag trees personally, however please note that visits are by appointment only. All trees are supplied rootballed during the winter months and containerised during the summer. Deliveries across the South Hams and nationwide. If you would like to know more, please contact New Wood Trees on 01803 782 666 or email info@newwoodtrees.co.uk. www.newwoodtrees.co.uk

New Homes and Land in the South Hams Welcome to the latest edition of our bespoke Simply South Hams magazine. As I write, I am pleased to say that it continues to be busy for our developments across the patch. We are delighted to have a number of quality instructions firstly a development of only 12 homes situated just on the outskirts of Salcombe. These properties, ranging from 3 and 4 bed houses some with estuary views but most with rolling countryside views start from £650,000. We have the opportunity to sell off plan and full details are available from our Salcombe office on 01548 844473. Further to this we are delighted to announce that our client Red Earth Developments have obtained planning permission on their scheme of the former River Yealm Hotel, for 14 high quality apartments and one house situated with excellent views of The Pool in Newton Ferrers. These properties we believe will appeal to those looking to downsize from larger houses within the area yet wishing to continue to have excellent water views, also to those looking to relocate from outside the area. We will be launching this scheme soon and full details will be available from our Newton Ferrrers office on 01752 873311. To continue the success story, we now only have one town house remaining from the conversion of The Mill at Harbertonford, so contact our Totnes office on 01803 847979 to take advantage of a deal on the last one remaining. Baltic Wharf the contemporary scheme by Bloors in Totnes has just launched its long awaited second phase and included in this phase are the stunning townhouses with direct water views, call the Totnes office on the number above or for more details please visit our website www.marchandpetit.co.uk. Overlooking one of the loveliest rivers along the South Hams coastline, this renowned and locally treasured building will be comprehensively refurbished and, together with an element of new build accommodation, will then provide 14 luxury apartments and 1 stunning contemporary house. The existing late Victorian façade of the building will be retained meaning that the view from the water will still be recognisable when sailing in to the harbour, in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There is already a waiting list of local interest from potential buyers within the village communities of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. Many home owners are looking ahead and planning to downsize to more manageable accommodation closer to the water. The site includes a woodland which after years of neglect will be managed over a 20-year time-frame, including replanting with sweet chestnut, English oak and an understorey of hazel, holly and rowan.
