50 years of neoliberal policies have powered economic growth and private profits over people and planet

r Heartfulness dependent on our ever more conscious participation in our common humanity (soma-psychepneuma/nous) and in our inhabitation of divine qualities (agape, eros, agency, philia, love, beauty, goodness, truth, joy, justice, wholeness, unity, compassion, wisdom et al.).

On the occasion of the New Year, I would like to thank everyone who has sent me good wishes, and I offer my greetings to you all, brothers and sisters across the world. Despite the many challenges that we are facing today, I feel optimistic that with a growing appreciation of how interconnected we all are in the oneness of humanity, we can all work to lead more meaningful lives and create a better world. As human beings we share a common wish to be happy and free from pain. We are social animals who depend on others to survive. Therefore, as I often say, we should work for the benefit of others. If we cannot help them, we should at least make sure we do no harm. I have found that helping others is the best way of ensuring happiness and calm for ourselves. I also firmly believe that we can find peace in the world only when we find peace within. Every human being has the potential to cultivate inner peace, and by so doing to contribute to the peace of our global community. We must try to cultivate compassion and inner peace, regardless of our nationality or religion, we can contribute to the well-being and happiness of all mankind. If the last century was the century of violence, it is our responsibility to make this century the century of dialogue. Once again, I extend warm greetings to you all. We-Thou” Relations, and “I-We-Seen” Sciences, Based on Various

In my street, in my city, and on our one shared planet, there are people with cultural heritages from Australia, Oceania, Asia, Africa, Europe, North-Central-South America. Accordingly, in my work, I try to give appropriate attention and due care with the life-affirming values that can be found within Primal (First Peoples), Oriental (Hindu, Taoist, Buddhist et al.), Semitic (Judaic, Christian, Muslim et al.), Modern (Cartesian sciences), Postmodern (various critiques of modern), and Polymodern-Metamodern (modern + postmodern) communities, as independent identities, as inter-independent parties, and as fully appreciated interactive communities on our one shared planet, altogether.

Xiye Bastida, an Otomi-Toltec woman from Mexico, in her life and work, like many people, struggles to hold her non-modern Indigenous values, which tend to be in tune with Mother Nature, with her modern values, which devitalise nature, turning living beings into inanimate resources that can be measured, made into various products, monetised by businesses for their short-term profits, and consumed by consumers for the economic growth of heartless elites, corporations, and nations.

Xiye Bastida, nevertheless, gave a courageous heartfelt speech at the United Nations in New York in September 2023. She defended the simple dignities of Mother Nature, celebrating Her precious gifts of clean air, clean waters, and clean lands, International Day of Peace 2023 | YOUTH EVENT PROGRAMME | United Nations & Xiye Bastida (xiyebeara.com). Now, with all that already said, let us look at the Oceania — Connecting Climate Minds proposal. We are looking for case studies from Oceania that will broaden global understanding of the intersection of climate change and mental health. Relevant case studies could discuss:

• A problem in a community, e.g. A population living in a coastal community already experiencing sea-level rise, where individuals are anecdotally reporting increasing rates of depression or anxiety.

• An intervention in a community or country, e.g. An NGO implementing a community-based intervention to enhance the psychological resilience of climate-affected populations.

• A policy, e.g. A country or city passing a national mental health policy that has strong emphasis on addressing the mental health impacts of climate change.

• A research project, e.g. investigating the mental health impacts of climate change using participatory methods or combined health and environmental big data. Please correct me if my impressions are inadequate, but this proposal engages with which understandings of climate change? mental health? non-modern? modern? integrative? Non-modern Primal, Oriental, and Semitic communities have witnessed over many decades, sorry centuries, and continue to lament, the ongoing destruction of Mother Nature. Despite truly heroic efforts, these communities continue to see clean air become dirty air, clean waters become dirty waters, clean lands become dirty lands, as all sorts of modern pollution continue to intensify and interact in air, waters, lands, bodies, and minds, degrading and destroying the habitats of many plants, many animals, and many human beings. In contrast to the Love of Nature that can be found within various non-modern Primal, Oriental, and Semitic communities, many people in various Modern, Postmodern, and Metamodern communities continue to authorise their selected knowledge claims based on what philosopher Alfred North Whitehead called, in the 1920s, Cartesian bifurcation. Cartesian ‘bifurcation’ [...] constitutes a dichotomy which divides the world into two substances, namely Thought (res cogitans) and Extension (res extensa). This gives rise to the belief that the ‘objective’ world can be wholly described in quantitative terms. In light of [Wolfgang] Smith’s ontological distinction, this is tantamount to the reduction of the corporeal to the physical. Therefore, qualitative attributes—such as colour, sound, or taste—are taken, in the Cartesian paradigm, to be mental or subjective. On the other hand, the quantitative attributes—the ‘extended’ (i.e., measurable) aspects—of the world are taken to be the ‘really real’. Quantities are thought to have ontological priority over qualities, insofar as the latter are merely ‘in our heads’ (res cogitantes). What is left in the external world, then, are objects which can be accounted for, without residue, in mathematical terms (res extensae). Now, when we investigate current concepts of climate change, mental health, and human wellbeing, we find that, for many modern people, each concept continues to be a Cartesian concept, dependent on the primacy of res extensae (quantities-measurements-data) over res cogitantes (qualities), thus on sciences of measurements, using selected metrics in selected case studies (e.g., Building systemic resilience, productivity and well-being: a Mental Wealth perspective). Crucially, according to these modern measurement-based Cartesian accounts, human wellbeing does not require participation in “I-I” enlightenment (the journey from one’s surface self into Heart-Centred Oneness with Nature and Humanity in deep compassion and integrative all-inclusive wisdom), nor participation in various “I-We-Thou” relations, in which the Divine in one person sees and dignifies the Divine in another person (which people in the Vedic East call Namaste, and people in the non-modern West call Loving Thy Neighbour), nor participation in non-modern wisdom schools with attention on inhabiting, in varying degrees from shallow to deep, various Divine Qualities, like Beauty, Goodness, Truth, Joy, and Love (Agape-Eros-Agency-Philia), in Nature, Arts, Morals, Ethics, Relations, Cultures, Sciences, and Organisations. I'm sorry if what I am raising here with you is not familiar knowledge, nor perhaps easy to understand. Maybe this will help. Have you seen the image of three modern frogs in water in a saucepan (p. 13), which is slowly being heated? One frog says, concerned, my calculations show something is wrong here. Another frog says, without any concern, everything is good here. And the third frog, annoyed, abruptly dismisses any concerns with contempt, "alarmist!" Let us ask here: Which frog is being physically healthy? mentally healthy? spiritually healthy? In modern ways? In non-modern ways? In non-modern + modern, integrative ways? Any one of them? I hope you can now see that I am trying to engage with some vital issues here. Will you join us in participating more fully in our Whole-Hearted Nature and Humanity?

Are You Familiar with this Common Reading of Modern Science, As an Independent Magisterium with Limited or No Regard for Humanity’s Wisdom?

Excerpt from Edward F. Kelly et al. Beyond Physicalism:

The rise of modern science has brought with it increasing acceptance among intellectual elites of a picture of reality that conflicts sharply both with everyday experience and with beliefs widely shared among the world’s great cultural traditions. A particularly stark but influential early statement of the emerging picture came from philosopher Bertrand Russell: That Man is the product of causes which had no prevision of the end they were achieving; that his origin, his growth, his hopes and fears, his loves and beliefs, are but the outcome of accidental collocations of atoms; that no fire, no heroism, no intensity of thought and feeling, can preserve an individual life beyond the grave; that all the labour of the ages, all the devotion, all the inspiration, all the noonday brightness of human genius, are destined to extinction in the vast death of the solar system, and that the whole temple of Man’s achievement must inevitably be buried beneath the debris of a universe in ruins all of these things, if not quite beyond dispute, are yet so nearly certain, that no philosophy which rejects them can hope to stand. Only within the scaffolding of these truths, only on the firm foundation of unyielding despair, can the soul’s habitation henceforth be safely built. (“The Free Man’s Worship,” 1903)

There can be no doubt that this bleak vision continues to dominate mainstream scientific thinking and has contributed to the “disenchantment” of the modern world with its multifarious attendant ills. Prominent recent spokesmen include, for example, Nobel prize winners such as theoretical physicist Steven Weinberg, for whom “the more the universe seems comprehensible, the more it also seems pointless,” and physicist-turned-neurobiologist Francis Crick, whose “astonishing hypothesis” declares that “You, your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free will, are in fact no more than the behaviour of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules. As Lewis Carroll’s Alice might have phrased it: ‘YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A PACK OF NEURONS.’” (my highlights).

Overt conflict between science and religion has erupted sporadically since the stirrings of science centuries ago, and recent years have witnessed a series of heavily publicised attacks on nearly all things religious by well-meaning defenders of Enlightenmentstyle rationalism. Such persons clearly regard themselves, and current mainstream science itself, as reliably marshalling the intellectual virtues of reason and objectivity against retreating forces of irrational authority and superstition. For them the truth of the picture sketched above has been demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt, and to think anything different is necessarily to abandon centuries of scientific progress, release the black tide of occultism, and revert to primitive supernaturalist beliefs characteristic of bygone times.

Contributors to the present volume share a very different view. We believe it takes astonishing hubris to dismiss en masse the collective experience and wisdom of a large proportion of our forebearers, including persons widely recognised as pillars of human civilisation, and we are united in believing that the single most important task confronting all of modernity is that of meaningful reconciliation of science and religion. We emphatically reject, moreover, the idea of simply exiling these humanly vital subjects to independent “magisteria” where they can go their separate ways as a means to uneasy truce, as originally decreed by Descartes and recently suggested again by Stephen Jay Gould.

Let Us Ask Here: Are There Any Better Readings of Nature, Human Society, and the Human Person?

[Russell and Whitehead's] Principia Mathematica, though read by only a stalwart few, has even so had a powerful impact upon Western civilization: in outlawing IW [irreducible wholeness], as it were, it has promoted a leveling down of Occidental culture, a drastic flattening thereof in toto. I surmise that the nihilistic nominalism of the point set paradigm has eventually filtered down to the public at large as the last word of Science, and in so doing has contributed decisively to the “enlightenment” of millions. One might say that it has disenchanted the universe, deprived it, in the eyes of the “enlightened ones,” of the authentic mystery residing in every natural thing – down to the humblest. And so it has in effect dehumanized a significant portion of mankind by rendering it profane. The fact is, nonetheless, that the domain of quantity does not exclude irreducible wholeness; if such were the case, not only could there be no music or traditional arts, but there could be no physics as well.

WHOLENESS (SPIRITUS-ANIMA-CORPUS) OF NATURE

In ordinary corporeal worlds, the QUALITY of QUALITIES, like COLOURS, LOVE, BEAUTY in Skills, GOODNESS in Relations, and TRUTH in Vision (Who Is the Seer?) in Methods (How Is Seeing Being Done?) and in Outcomes (What Is Being Seen?), are often more valuable in many situations than limited reductive measurements.

In corporeal worlds, QUALITIES, like Colours, LOVE (Agape-Eros-Agency-Philia), Beauty, Goodness, and Truth, in all sorts of ways, have more value in many situations than QUANTITIES-measurements-data.

Moreover, QUALITIES participate in the Wholeness of Nature (pneuma-spiritus-heart, psyche-anima-soul, and soma-corpus-body) in principial equilibrium, uniting various complementaries and oppositions (silence-sound, darkness-light, essence-substance, virtues-vices, masculinefeminine, yang-yin, et al.) at the Heart of All Beings. What is GOOD for planetary health and human happiness involves human beings becoming fully alive; growing up as artists; developing stages-layers of skills in LOVE, Beauty, Goodness, and Truth in each person, in inter-personal relations, and in ecosocial organisations; learning to live creatively in tune with Universal Spirit (Seer) and Sacred Nature (Seen); waking up to become Wise Sages. Inhabitants: People living in tune with Universal Spirit and Sacred Nature (SatChit-Ananda [Being-Consciousness-Bliss]) include Heart-Centred storytellers, mythologists, philosophers, & metaphysicians in our Primal Traditions (Africa, Asia, Europe, Americas, Australia, Oceania) and in our World Religions (Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam et al.) who say:

1) beyond the worlds of things, lives, minds, and souls is Divine Presence, 2) in living beings, there is a natural capacity for, a relative similarity to, and a deep longing for Divine Presence, and 3) the true goal of existence is evermore conscious participation in the True, the Good, and the Beautiful in timeless Divine Presence.

Altogether, HEART-CENTREDNESS in each person, in our inter-personal relations, and in our eco-social organisations, at local, national, and global scales.

Looking into the Philosophical Roots of Current Obsessions with Limitless Economic Growth on Our Limited Planet

On Cartesian Bifurcation in the 1920s

Whitehead spoke of the “bifurcation of nature into two systems of reality” (1920 [1986: 30]) to denote the strategy originating with Galileo, Descartes, Boyle and Locke of bifurcating nature into the essential reality of primary qualities and the non-essential reality of “psychic additions” or secondary qualities, ultimately to be explained away in terms of primary qualities. Whitehead sided with Berkeley in arguing that the primary/secondary distinction is not tenable (1920 [1986: 43–44]), that all qualities are “in the same boat, to sink or swim together” (1920 [1986: 148]), and that, for example,

the red glow of the sunset should be as much part of nature as are the molecules and electric waves by which men of science would explain the phenomenon. (1920 [1986: 29])

Whitehead described the philosophical outcome of the bifurcation of nature as follows:

The primary qualities are the essential qualities of substances whose spatiotemporal relationships constitute nature. … The occurrences of nature are in some way apprehended by minds … But the mind in apprehending also experiences sensations which, properly speaking, are qualities of the mind alone. These sensations are projected by the mind so as to clothe appropriate bodies in external nature. Thus the bodies are perceived as with qualities which in reality do not belong to them, qualities which in fact are purely the offspring of the mind. Thus nature gets credit which should in truth be reserved for ourselves: the rose for its scent: the nightingale for his song: and the sun for his radiance. The poets are entirely mistaken. They should address their lyrics to themselves, and should turn them into odes of self-congratulation on the excellency of the human mind. “The enormous success of the scientific abstractions”, Whitehead wrote, “has foisted onto philosophy the task of accepting them as the most concrete rendering of fact” and, he added:

Thereby, modern philosophy has been ruined. It has oscillated in a complex manner between three extremes. There are the dualists, who accept matter and mind as on an equal basis, and the two varieties of monists, those who put mind inside matter, and those who put matter inside mind. But this juggling with abstractions can never overcome the inherent confusion introduced by the ascription of misplaced concreteness to the scientific scheme. (1925 [1967: 55])

An Excerpt from Wolfgang Smith’s Physics: A Science in Quest of an Ontology

To the extent that modern physics possesses an ontology at all, it has tended to be the Cartesian doctrine of "bifurcation." Not only, however, does this thesis prove to be untenable, but since the advent of quantum theory it has rendered physics de facto incomprehensible. This book introduces an astoundingly uncomplicated and inherently Platonist ontology in which the quantum theoretic stratum assumes its rightful place within the hierarchy of being.

The first step towards an ontological comprehension of physics consists in the rediscovery of what we term the corporeal domain, which is basically the perceptible, beginning with the visual. It is neither necessary nor feasible—initially, at least—to speculate about the other four senses, nor to worry about “border cases” and the like. To regain a grasp of “the corporeal” it is needful to substantiate that the grass is indeed “green”: and this should suffice to break the Cartesian [1] spell.

There is thus a categorical distinction to be made between the world as conceived by the physicist—which we refer to as the physical—and the perceptible world in which we “live and have our being,” which we distinguish ontologically from the physical as the corporeal.

Having rejected Cartesian bifurcation, we reflect upon what this entails in regard to the measurement problem of quantum theory. And the fact is that, having restored ontological rectitude, the resolution of this conundrum literally “stares us in the face”! This is what we wish now to explain.

In place of the Cartesian dichotomy of so-called res extensae versus res cogitantes which has proved to be spurious another ontological dichotomy has now taken its place: one needs namely to distinguish ontologically between the entities of physics and the entities comprising this ordinary perceptible world. What invalidates the Democritean [2] premise is the fact that qualities beginning, yes, with color have once again been recognized as bona fide components of the “external” world. And this has drastic implications for physics, given that—by its very modus operandi it has no eye for qualities! A worldview based upon physics is bound, therefore, to exclude the “qualitative dimension” of the cosmos not because it is not there but because this science is categorically incapable of grasping that dimension, that aspect of the world.

An ontological distinction is thus to be made between the spatio-temporal world as perceptible, and that world as conceived by the physicist: the two are by no means the same. No wonder that from the physicist’s point of view the measurement problem could not be solved: what else can you expect, given that the act of measurement inasmuch as the result must be perceptible transcends “the world of physics” categorically! What strikes me as perhaps the most amazing fact concerning the quantum measurement quandary is that it has apparently failed to rouse the physics community at large from their “Cartesian slumber.”

What is called for is an ontological distinction between the spatio-temporal world as perceptible and the world as conceived by the physicist: the corporeal and the physical, we shall say. It appears that Eddington was right: there are in truth “two tables.” There is namely the one I can see and touch, and the one made of “atoms and the void” which I cannot.

What renders a corporeal entity thus irreducible is the ontological fact that, in its essence, it is not subject to the bounds of space and time. And this notion of irreducible wholeness leads quite naturally to the Platonist ontology represented by the tripartite cosmos, as we have come to conceive of it. In this ontology the integral cosmos divides hierarchically into three domains, ranging from the corporeal—subject to the bounds of both space and time—to what may traditionally be termed the aeviternal, which is subject to neither and must consequently be the ontological stratum from which both VC and IW are ultimately derived. Dante refers to it poetically as “the pivot around which the primordial wheel revolves,” a metaphor in which that “primordial wheel” refers evidently to time, which proves in fact to be definitive of an ontological stratum referred to traditionally as the intermediary domain, of which the corporeal is the termination. The integral cosmos may therefore be represented in iconographic mode as a circle in which the center represents the aeviternal realm, the interior the intermediary, and the circumference the corporeal domain.

[1] René Descartes (1596–1650) posited a division of reality into two substances: res cogitantes (things of thought) and res extensae (things extended in space). A. N. Whitehead named this partition “bifurcation.” The interest of modern physics is with res extensae, which are purely quantitative and conceived of as wholly “objective”; res cogitantes are, in this paradigm, merely subjective constructs “in the mind” and include qualitative attributes, such as color. Wolfgang Smith graduated from Cornell at age eighteen with majors in physics, mathematics, and philosophy. He subsequently contributed a theoretical solution to the re-entry problem for space flight. After taking his doctorate in mathematics at Columbia, he served for thirty years as professor of mathematics at M.I.T., U.C.L.A., and Oregon State University. Smith then devoted himself to correcting the fallacies of scientistic belief, focusing on foundational problems pertaining to quantum theory and visual perception by way of the traditional tripartite cosmology. The integral kosmos and integral human being are ontologically tripartite, composed of the Tribhuvana or “triple world” in the Vedic East, Pneuma/Nous-Rūḥ/‘Aql-Spiritus/IntellectusHeart, psyche-nafs-anima-soul, and soma-jism-corpus-body in Greek-Arabic-Latin-English.

In ordinary corporeal worlds, various QUALITIES, like COLOURS, are more valuable in many situations than reductive measurements.

In the modern cosmos, human beings learn to inhabit a spatio-temporal world represented mathematically in terms of three spatial coordinates and a linear temporal coordinate: the familiar Cartesian quadruple (x1, x2, x3, t).

In corporeal worlds, QUALITIES – like colours, love, and other virtues that presence beauty, goodness, and truth in various ways – have more value in many situations than QUANTITIES-measurements-data. Moreover, qualities participate in the Wholeness of Nature (spiritus-heart, anima-soul, and corpus-body) in principial equilibrium, uniting various complementaries and oppositions (silence-sound, essence-substance, masculine-feminine, yangyin, good-evil, et al.) at the Heart of All Beings. What is GOOD for planetary health and human happiness is human beings becoming fully alive, living creatively in tune with Universal Spirit (Seer) and Sacred Nature (Seen).

Inhabitants: People living in tune with Universal Spirit and Mother Nature (Sat-Chit-Ananda) include Heart-Centred philosophers, metaphysicians, mythologists, and storytellers in our Primal Traditions (in Africa, Asia, Europe, Americas, Oceania, et al.) and in our World Religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Taoism et al.) that say: 1) beyond the worlds of things, lives, minds, and souls is Divine Presence, 2) in living beings, there is a natural capacity for, a relative similarity to, and a deep longing for Divine Presence, and 3) the true goal of existence is conscious participation in Divine Presence.

In modern physical sub-corporeal spatio-temporal worlds, represented mathematically in terms of the familiar Cartesian coordinates (x1, x2, x3, t), QUANTITIES-measurements-data have primacy in many situations. Thus, Nature tends to be denatured, human beings dehumanised, qualities (like life, love, mind, soul, spirit, beauty, goodness, truth, feminine, masculine, et al.) disqualified, “unfriended” as “ghosts in the machine.” This is said to be good? for economic growth, opening pathways for technological innovations, with attention on making evermore profits, mandated by law, with limited or no responsibility for spiritual transformation from ego- to Heart-Centredness.

Inhabitants: People operating with Cartesian principles (res extensae [extended things in space-time], and res cogitantes [“things of the mind”]) include modernists, who hold that “physics is the basis of reality and that science and rationality set people free,” postmodernists, who hold “a critical stance towards knowledge and science, and power structures, unconscious drives, cognitive biases, and arbitrary social constructions that enthral human minds,” and metamodernists, who hold “a worldview which combines the modern faith in progress with the postmodern critique” (Source: Metamoderna).

Susanne Cook-Greuter, Vertical Development Academy, in Paul van Schaik’s Urban Hub 23: Integral Africa, p. 116, refers to our W.E.I.R.D. English mediated version of reality, and “how the world is being colonized and influenced by Western ideas of what it means to be a developing human being.” W.E.I.R.D. (original version found in behavioral sciences) – Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic. W.E.I.R.D. (Susanne Cook-Greuter’s version) – White, Educated, Integrally-informed, (post)-Rational, Developmental. W.E.I.R.D. Approximate Correspondences of Stages-Levels-Layers in Human Development Across Selected Models

Non-modern, modern, post-modern, and meta-modern worlds tend to inhabit different understandings of human development. Non-modern worlds value Divine Qualities, the spiritual “I-I” journey from my/our surface self to True Self, Oneness with the Wholeness of Nature.

Modern worlds, informed by Cartesian bifurcation, value things that can be measured, primarily measurements of res extensae in modern physical and life sciences, and secondarily measurements of res cogitantes in modern psychometrics and/or sociometrics.

Post-modern worlds tend to critique modern lifeless mechanics with living systems designs, often in terms of non-hierarchical flatland relations.

Meta-modern worlds tend to value from less to more complex, developmental, or evolutionary understandings, with some meta-modernists choosing to use models of adult development, like the models presented here [also see charts in Ken Wilber’s Integral Psychology (pp. 197-217)].

Integrative Heart-Centred Humanity involves inter-relating non-modern, modern, post-modern, and meta-modern values at child “ME”, adult “US”, and sage “All of Us, Inter-Connecting, Altogether” stages-levels-layers of development within the Wholeness (Spiritus-Anima-Corpus) of Nature.

How Is Seeing Being Done within Each of Various Schools in Arts, Morals, and Sciences? What Is Being Seen?

Notice first of all the broad, distinguishing features of the transcendent self [Eye of Heart-Spirit]: it is a center and expanse of awareness which is creatively detached from one’s personal mind, body, emotions, thoughts, and feelings. So if you would like to begin to work at intuiting this transcendent self within you that goes beyond you, the you that is not you, then proceed as follows:

Slowly begin to recite the following to yourself, trying to realize as vividly as possible the import of each statement:

I have a body, but I am not my body. I can see and feel my body, and what I can see and feel is not the true Seer. My body may be tired or excited, sick or healthy, heavy or light, but that has nothing to do with my inward I, the Witness. I have a body, but I am not my body.

I have desires, but I am not my desires. I can know my desires, and what can be known is not the true Knower. Desires come and go, floating through my awareness, but they do not affect my inward I, the Witness. I have desires but I am not my desires.

I have emotions, but I am not my emotions. I can feel and sense my emotions, and what can be felt and sensed is not the true Feeler. Emotions pass through me, but they do not affect my inward I, the Witness. I have emotions but I am not my emotions.

I have thoughts, but I am not my thoughts. I can know and intuit my thoughts, and what can be known is not the true Knower. Thoughts come to me and thoughts leave me, but they do not affect my inward I, the Witness. I have thoughts but I am not my thoughts.

This done – perhaps several times – then affirm as concretely as you can: I am what remains, a pure center of awareness, an unmoved Witness of all these thoughts, emotions, feelings, and sensations.

A Non-Modern Understanding of Transformation: METANOIA

We are told that “The heart is deep” (Psalm 64:6) or, as St. Makarios states, “the heart is an immeasurable abyss.” The heart is, as St. Philotheos of Sinai (9th or 10th century) states, the “place of God” which, when the Divine dwells within it, becomes “the heaven of the heart.”

In the Jewish tradition, the Divine Intellect will then dwell in its proper abode, within the spiritual heart of the human being, where it becomes the “eye of the heart” (‘ein ha-lev): “In the hearts of all that are wise-hearted, I have put wisdom” (Exodus 31:6). The Gospel refers to this “heart-intellect” here: “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). The Lakota holy man Hehaka Sapa, more commonly known as Black Elk (1863–1950), provides a stunning passage outlining the “eye of the heart”: I am blind and do not see the things of this world; but when the Light comes from Above, it enlightens my heart and I can see, for the Eye of my heart (Chante Ista) sees everything. The heart is a sanctuary at the center of which there is a little space, wherein the Great Spirit dwells, and this is the Eye (Ista). This is the Eye of the Great Spirit by which He sees all things and through which we see Him. If the heart is not pure, the Great Spirit cannot be seen, and if you should die in this ignorance, your soul cannot return immediately to the Great Spirit, but it must be purified by wandering about in the world. In order to know the center of the heart where the Great Spirit dwells you must be pure and good, and live in the manner that the Great Spirit has taught us. The man who is thus pure contains the Universe in the pocket of his heart (Chante Ognaka).

May All Beings Be Happy: Max Wealth for the Few, and Leave All Others with Grim Lives and Futures, or Live Well within Integrative Heart-Centred Humanity with Wholeness and Tripartite Unity in Nature, Each Community, and Each Person?

We ask here: Which world do you live in? Do you inhabit the Wholeness and Tripartite Unity (Pneuma/Nous-Spiritus/Intellectus-Heart, psyche-anima-soul, somacorpus-body) of Nature? Or do you only inhabit physical sub-corporeal worlds, in which only measurements count? Many people believe, in their lives and work, that only economic growth counts. Thus, in their legally authorised and socially myopic duties, their attention is on maximising their short-term profits and longterm economic wealth in heartless operations within business-as-usual, at local, national, and global scales. Consequently, in various inattentive ways, many marginalise and externalise coldly the health of people and planet (air, waters, soils, plants, and animals) from their immediate concerns and future considerations. Thus, ALL OF US are “on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator” (António Guterres, UN Sec-Gen), with many of us failing to live HeartCentred lives, failing to truly LOVE familiar and unfamiliar people, and failing to fully engage with the thriving of life on our precious planet. So, let us go deeper here in our inquiries: Why are we cascading so madly with interacting ecological and social crises into TEOTWAWKI (The End of the World as We Know It)?

Many people, in Primal (First Nations), Oriental, and Semitic communities, inhabit in various ways in varying degrees Qualities – like Colours, Love in Agape-Eros-Agency-Communion, Beauty in “I-I” Skills in Arts, Goodness in “I-We-Thou” Heart-toHeart Relations, and Truth in Vision (Who Is Seeing in the Seer? dependent child-student? independent adult? inter-independent elder-sage?), in Methods (How Is Seeing Being Done in arts-stories-myths? in inter-personal relations-morals-ethics? and in mono/multi-/inter-/trans-/meta-disciplinary sciences?), and in Outcomes (What Is Being Seen within a given skillcontext-discipline-field?) within the Wholeness and Tripartite Unity of Nature (Pneuma/Nous-Rūḥ/‘AqlSpiritus/Intellectus-Heart, psyche-nafs-anima-soul, and soma-jism-corpus-body in non-modern GreekArabic-Latin-West, or Tribhuvana in the Vedic East) –which are more valuable in many situations than acquired modern habits of only recognising and privileging selected sets of reductive measurements.

Many people, in modern, postmodern, and metamodern communities, learn to inhabit in various ways in varying degrees physical subcorporeal worlds, represented mathematically in terms of the familiar spatio-temporal Cartesian coordinates (x1, x2, x3, t). So, in inhabiting their selected “I-it” indicators, many people tend to disregard “I-I” and “I-We-Thou” Body-Soul-Heart Qualities that are present in our living worlds, as often in their work they claim authoritatively that ONLY THEIR MEASUREMENTS COUNT. Consequently, reality is quantified-flatlanded, nature denatured (with air, waters, soils, plants, animals, and humans heartlessly exploited for short-term profits), qualities (like life, body, mind, soul, spirit, arts, morals, sciences, love, feminine, masculine, beauty, goodness, truth, justice, music, colours) disqualified, human beings dehumanised, all of them “unfriended”, as increasingly W.E.I.R.D. “ hosts in the Machine.”

Obvious or not, our current cold heartlessness cannot continue. We must change or perish.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres thunders repeatedly: “Humanity has a choice:

Cooperate or perish. It is either a Climate Solidarity Pact – or a Collective Suicide Pact.”

So, here we must stand, altogether!

We – members of our various Primal, Oriental, Semitic, Modern, Postmodern, and Metamodern communities – must work with each other to inhabit Integrative Heart-Centred Humanity in which we are enabled to transform our current lives from my ego-centric “me” isolations, and our various ethnosocio-centric “us versus them” alienations, towards world-centric “all of us, altogether” cooperative harmonies to live well with each other, with intra-generational and inter-generational equity, within our planet’s ecological matrices-thresholds, and with fair social distributions of our planet's limited living capabilities-capacities, within everybody with everybody, and with all of this in tune with the Wholeness and Tripartite Unity of Nature. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with ready access to the dedicated work of many UN agencies, understands better than many what is happening on our planet. He keeps on saying, REPEATEDLY, again and again, “Humanity is waging war on nature. This is senseless and suicidal” (UNEP report, Making Peace With Nature). With the release of IPCC Sixth Assessment Report: WG1, he declared a Code Red for Humanity! At COP27 in Egypt, he said, “We are on a Highway to Climate Hell with our Foot on the Accelerator!” So, here we are in CODE RED with an escalating climate crisis, with our current BAU trends already condemning ourselves to 1.5°C degrees of global heating within a few years, and, given that for many of us changing ourselves is much too hard, re-signing ourselves to allowing around 3.0°C degrees of global boiling within a generation or two! Moreover, we are not yet ready to talk about abrupt runaway climate change, prompted by geophysical surprises yet to be considered or measured in current IPCC reports, which would turn already very alarming IPCC projections, in each of five authorised scenarios, into more blah! blah! BLAH!, Arctic News: Crossing 3C (arctic-news.blogspot.com) Indeed, all of us are living in very challenging, unsettling times (Said E. Dawlabani, Paradise Lost | The Sequel – Kosmos Journal; Jeremy Lent, Solving the Climate Crisis Requires the End of Capitalism). In addition to deliberately choosing with BAU to dooming ourselves to inhabiting uninhabitable global boiling in upcoming years-decades, we have

• our ongoing challenges with COVID-19 with novel everchanging variants that are likely to continue to emerge to disrupt, upset, and terminate many lives into the foreseeable future.

• according to the WWF and Zoological Society of London’s 2022 Living Planet Report, population sizes of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish declining by 69% on average since 1970, and, with ongoing significant losses of habitat continuing to be orchestrated by BAU, population sizes are likely to decline into the foreseeable future.

• Sir David Attenborough presenting, in Breaking Boundaries and A Life on Our Planet, his thoughtful accounts on the devastating environmental consequences of humanity’s rapid economic and population growth in recent decades. He laments the tragic ongoing decline of biodiversity and life on Earth, saying emphatically, “ ur planet is headed for disaster. We need to learn how to work with nature; rather than against it.” (UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15), POST-2020 GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY FRAMEWORK).

• limited supplies and declining resource quality of key resources, compounding within upcoming years-decades, according to Nate Hagens (The Great Simplification) and Harald Sverdrup et al. r3.0 2020 Conference, WORLD7, Global Integrated Assessment Model, that will be needed in any possible transformations into regenerative economies.

• economic systems that deliberately, legally externalise from their accounts, unethically, unsustainably 1) fail to consider the necessity of living within our planet’s limited ecological matrices-thresholds, and 2) fail to provide secure social foundations for everybody with everybody in genuine intragenerational-intergenerational justice

• political systems that 1) fail to go beyond divisive debates between various “us” versus “them” contenders, 2) fail to generate diversity informed “all of us, interconnecting with each other” dialogues, and 3) fail to work to integrate what is true, good, and beautiful in the various contributions of various rightsholders. Now, let us dive from what is happening on our observable measurable surfaces into our metaphysical depths. There is much more of crucial importance to be considered here:

• in physics, as A.N. Whitehead, Nick Herbert, Wolfgang Smith, Sabine Hossenfelder, et al. have declared in various ways for decades, physicists have “lost their grip on reality”.

• in philosophy, too few understand humanity’s Heart-soul-body metaphysics which can be found within humanity’s diverse languages, from East to West, from South to North.

• in religion, noetic-yogic practices of purification, illumination, and unification, in Heart-soul-body, in individuals, communities, and kosmos, that generate METANOIA (Change of Heart) from exclusive self-centredness and/or exclusive group-centredness into the Universal Heart of All Living Beings too often tend to be ignored in both theoria and praxes Now, with this barest outline of our global-national-local metacrises in place, let’s ask: what does authentic development and overall regenerative transformation truly mean?

• in humanity’s wisdom traditions, development means noetic transformations from self-centredness and/or group-centredness into the Universal Heart of All Living Beings.

• in metaphysics, development means awakening ever more inclusive modes of the seer (who is seeing in epistemic views in me-centred body, us-centred community, or heartcentred, all of us, living beings, altogether?), seeing (how is seeing being done with our current methodologies?), and seen (what is being seen in various domains, in individuals, communities, and kosmos?) into ever more inclusive modes of wisdom and compassion in Heart-Centred Service of the Wellbeing of All Living Beings.

• in modern science, development means, in ordinary, “instrumentalist”, “positivistic” terms, using limited “sciences of measurement”, advances in technological innovations.

• in capacities management, development means putting into place the cyclical renewal of limited living capacities, not our current reckless taking, using, and wasting of resources.

• in biodiversity management, development means re-wilding habitats and re-generating biodiversity, not continuing with polluting air, waters, and lands in business-as-usual (BAU).

• in climate action, development means reducing, stopping, and drawdown-ing emissions of greenhouse gases as much as possible as quickly as possible within our current decade, the 2020s, and working to repair, restore, and regenerate the natural balance of our planet that was present in the Holocene in which all forms of life tended to flourish.

• in economics, development involves going beyond our current degenerative BAU exploitations, and various ESG LaLaLands, transforming key initiatives, like Bill Baue’s Lost Decade: Susty Standards Sabotage Susty (r3-0.org), and U R SD’s Sustainable Development Performance Indicators (SDPIs) User Manual, at pathfinding organisations, like r3.0 Conference 2023 | Activating Restorative Norms (r3-0.org), Global Thresholds and Allocations, UNRISD SDPI, Earth4All, DEAL, and WEAll, into a regenerative economics, based on everybody living well with each other in Heart-soul-body within our planet’s ecological matrices-thresholds and with fair social allocations for everybody • in politics, development means local-national-global co-ordinations in robust, ethical, and Heartful Service of the Wellbeing of Life in All Beings on our Precious Planet.

Now, let all of us move out of our current forms of “deadly incrementalism” (BAU, CSR, ESG, UN SDGs et al.) into truly robust, multi-dimensional, regenerative transformations. We repeat here that a tangible way forward must work to coordinate what is happening within who is seeing, and how is seeing being done with our methodologies, both of which are resulting in what is being seen in our various Covid, biodiversity, ecological matrices-thresholds, climate, economic, and political crises, separately, interconnectedly, and altogether. Time for each of us to respond with all of us to overcome our current degenerative ways of living, which have resulted in all of us living in our life-threatening CODE RED world.
