Opening Prayer

Loving God: as we begin this study, we surrender our leadership roles to You. Teach us what it means to be the leader You have called us to be. Strip away our pride, our selfish ambitions, and our fears. Replace them with humility, wisdom, and integrity. May the Holy Spirit guide our hearts, our decisions, and our actions as we seek to lead according to Your will.

Lord, shape us through this study. Strengthen our faith, renew our minds, and help us to walk in Your ways. As we reflect on these seven principles, may we not only learn about godly leadership, but put it into practice.

We commit this journey to You, trusting that You will transform us into leaders who honor and glorify Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Matthew 20:26

Godly leaders don’t seek power for themselves; they serve others with love and humility

James 1:5

Every great leader needs wisdom to make decisions, guide others, and navigate challenges.

Joshua 1:9

Leadership requires courage—to stand firm in your faith, make difficult choices, and face opposition.

As a leader, prioritize the well-being of those you serve and demonstrate Christ’s love in all you do.

Stay Rooted in God’s Word

Godly leaders must be anchored in Scripture.

Romans 8:14

Great leaders follow God’s direction rather than relying on their own understanding.

Key Verse:

Lead With Humility

Week one

Matthew 20:20-28

26 It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant (Matthew 20:26)

Matthew 20:20-28

New Revised Standard Version

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” 24 When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 26 It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave, 28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Key Terms Used In The Study

1.

Humility – A modest view of one’s importance, putting others before oneself, as demonstrated by Christ (Philippians 2:3-4).

Servant Leadership – A leadership style modeled by Jesus, emphasizing service to others rather than seeking power (Mark 10:45).

3.

2. Authority – The right to lead or make decisions, which in God’s kingdom is granted by God and exercised with humility (Romans 13:1).

4.

Greatness – True greatness in God’s kingdom is defined by servanthood, not power or prestige (Matthew 23:11-12).

5.

Sacrifice – The act of giving up something for the sake of others, exemplified by Jesus’ life and death (John 15:13).

Key Verse:

Week Two Seek Wisdom From God

James 1:2-8

5 If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you. (James 1:5 )

James 1:2-8

New Revised Standard Version

2 My brothers and sisters, whenever you face various trials, consider it all joy, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance complete its work, so that you may be complete and whole, lacking in nothing. 5 If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you. 6 But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7,8 For the doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

Key Terms Used In The Study

1. Faith – Complete trust and confidence in God, even when faced with trials and uncertainty. (Hebrews 11:1)

Wisdom – The ability to discern and apply knowledge and understanding in a godly manner, seeking God's guidance in decision-making. (Proverbs 2:6)

2. Perseverance – Steadfastness and endurance in faith, especially during challenges and difficulties. (Romans 5:3-4)

3. Humility – A posture of dependence on God, recognizing our limitations and submitting to His wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)

5.

4. Double-Minded – A wavering or divided heart, torn between faith in God and reliance on worldly wisdom. (James 1:8)

Courage – The ability to act in faith despite fear or adversity, trusting in God's strength (Deuteronomy 31:6).

1. Faith – Complete trust in God’s promises, even when circumstances seem uncertain (Hebrews 11:1).

2. Obedience – Following God’s commands and direction, even when it is challenging (John 14:15).

3. Strength – The divine empowerment given by God to overcome difficulties (Isaiah 40:31).

4. Leadership – The act of guiding others with wisdom, humility, and trust in God’s plan (Proverbs 3:5-6).

5. Introduction

After Moses’ death, Joshua was appointed by God to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. This was a monumental task, requiring great courage and faith. God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous, reassuring him of

His presence. In Joshua 1:1-9, God’s instructions highlight the importance of obedience, trust, and bold leadership. These principles apply to anyone seeking to lead with humility and faith, whether in ministry, the workplace, or personal life.

Telling the Bible Story

Joshua 1:1-9 marks the transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua. God’s charge to Joshua contains key themes:

Verse 1-2: God commissions Joshua to lead the Israelites into the land promised to them.

Verse 3-5: God assures Joshua of victory and His unending presence, emphasizing that no enemy will stand against him.

Verse 6-7: The command to be strong and courageous is repeated, with an emphasis on obedience to the Law.

Verse 8: Meditation on God’s Word is essential for success and prosperity.

Verse 9: God’s final encouragement Joshua must not be afraid, for God is with him.

These verses parallel other scriptures:

Deuteronomy 31:6 – Moses’ charge to Israel and Joshua to be strong and courageous.

Psalm 27:1 – Confidence in God as the source of strength.

Isaiah 41:10 – God's promise to uphold His people in difficult times.

Bible Study Questions

1.Why do you think God emphasized courage and strength multiple times to Joshua?

2.How does meditating on God’s Word lead to success and prosperity in leadership?

4.What challenges did Joshua face, and how do they compare to leadership challenges today?

5. How can we ensure that we are leading with faith rather than fear?

Godly leadership requires faith, obedience, and courage. Just as Joshua was called to trust God’s plan, we too are called to step forward in faith when facing uncertainty.

A Story of Courage in Leadership:

Consider the story of William Wilberforce, the British politician who fought to end the slave trade. Despite opposition and failure, he remained steadfast in his mission, relying on God’s strength. Like Joshua, Wilberforce exhibited courageous faith, knowing that leadership is not about personal gain but about fulfilling God's purpose.

Reflection Questions

1.What areas in your life require you to step out in faith and courage?

2.How can you remind yourself daily that God is with you in your leadership journey?

3.What fears are holding you back from fulfilling God’s call, and how can you overcome them?

Closing Prayer

Loving God, we thank You for the example of Joshua, who trusted You despite the challenges ahead. Help us to be strong and courageous in our faith and leadership. Remove any fear or doubt and remind us that You are always with us. May we lead with humility, obedience, and unwavering trust in Your promises. Guide us in every step, and may our leadership bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Life Application

Story of Love and Service In Leadership

A principal at a struggling school faced constant challenges—low morale, budget cuts, and discouraged teachers. Rather than focusing on authority, she led by example. Every morning, she greeted students by name, listened to staff concerns, and even helped clean the cafeteria when short-staffed. Her humility and servant leadership transformed the school culture. Teachers felt valued, students felt cared for, and the school began to thrive.

Her leadership reflected 1 Corinthians 16:14 “Do everything in love.” She did not just tell others what to do—she led through service.

Practical steps for applying 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 in Leadership:

✔Be watchful – Pay attention to spiritual and practical needs in your community.

✔Stand firm in faith – Hold onto biblical truth, even when it’s unpopular.

✔Be courageous – Trust God in leadership decisions, even when they require risk.

✔Lead with strength – Rely on God’s power, not personal ability.

✔Love and serve others – Make love the foundation of every leadership action.

Bible Study Questions

1.Why does the psalmist emphasize meditating on God’s Word daily?

2.How does Scripture provide greater wisdom than worldly knowledge?

3.What role does humility play in receiving instruction from God?

4. In what ways can leaders apply Psalm 119:97-105 to their leadership journey?

5.How does staying rooted in God’s Word protect us from false teachings and poor decision-making?

Effective leaders immerse themselves in Scripture, allowing God’s wisdom to guide their choices. The psalmist’s love for God’s Word serves as a model for leaders who seek to lead with humility and discernment. Without the foundation of Scripture, leadership becomes self-driven and prone to error.

A Story of being Rooted in God’s Word

Consider the example of George Washington, the first U.S. president. Despite his power and influence, he frequently sought divine guidance, often reading and applying biblical principles in his leadership. His humility and reliance on moral convictions shaped a legacy of integrity. Likewise, leaders today must stay rooted in Scripture to make ethical and wise decisions.

Reflection Questions

1.What practical steps can you take to increase your time meditating on God’s Word?

2.How can you use Scripture as your guide in moments of uncertainty

3.What habits can you develop to ensure you lead with humility and wisdom?

Closing Prayer

Loving God, thank You for Your Word, which is our source of wisdom, strength, and direction. Teach us to love and meditate on Your commands, seeking Your truth in every decision we make. Help us to lead with humility, relying on Your wisdom rather than our own understanding. May we walk in the light of Your Word, guiding others toward righteousness. Strengthen our faith and deepen our devotion, that we may reflect Your truth in all we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Closing Prayer

Loving God: thank You for calling us to lead in Your Kingdom. We recognize that without Your Spirit, we are incapable of leading in a way that honors You. Help us to surrender our pride, ambitions, and self-reliance so that we may be fully led by the Holy Spirit. Give us the wisdom to discern Your voice, the humility to follow Your lead, and the courage to walk in obedience.

Lord, we do not want to lead according to the flesh but by the power of Your Spirit. Remind us daily that we are Your children, called to reflect Christ in our leadership. Strengthen our faith, deepen our trust in You, and use us to bring glory to Your name.

As we continue our journey, transform our hearts to be more like Yours. May our leadership reflect the humility of Christ, and may we lead others to know and follow You. We ask all of this in Jesus' mighty name. Amen.

Welcome to Becoming the Leader God Wants You to Be: Seven Biblical Principles for Godly Leadership.
